Retrospective entomological and eco-epidemiological survey of a leishmaniasis outbreak in southern Spain.

Leishmaniasis is a well-known vector borne disease with a high incidence in southern European countries. In Spain, Leishmania infantum infections typically occur as sporadic and infrequent outbreaks. However, in recent years, several outbreaks have been reported in different regions, accompanied by increasing hospitalization rates. In 2023, 31 human cases of Leishmania infection were reported in hospitals across 15 municipalities in Córdoba (southern Spain). Visceral leishmaniasis was the predominant form (77.4%), followed by cutaneous (19.4%), and mucocutaneous (3.2%) forms. A retrospective a

Microplanning for entomological surveys to sustain the onchocerciasis elimination effort in West Africa.

BACKGROUND: Former Onchocerciasis Control Programme countries like Senegal have made important progress towards eliminating onchocerciasis. Senegal has engaged in post-mass drug administration (MDA) activities, mainly entomological surveillance, but the country initially struggled to collect the recommended number of blackflies in all the country's transmission zones. Here, we implemented a simple approach in the entomological surveillance protocol to increase the number of Simulium damnosum collected. METHODS: The study was conducted over two consecutive years, 2022 and 2023, in the main S.

Enhancing Entomological Surveillance to Combat Aedes-Borne Diseases in Southern Iran.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases, particularly those transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, including dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever, represent significant public health challenges globally. The rapid spread of these diseases in urban environments, driven by climate change and human activities, necessitates effective surveillance and control strategies. In Iran, the emergence of Aedes aegypti has raised concerns about potential outbreaks of the disease, particularly in southern regions such as Hormozgan Province. METHODS: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted using routinely

Paederus Dermatitis: Two Outbreaks of an Entomologic Disease in Austere Expeditionary Care.

Paederus dermatitis, also known as dermatitis linearis, is an acute cutaneous condition caused by contact with the potent vesicant toxin paederin, produced by endosymbiotic Pseudomonas-like bacteria within Paederus spp. beetles. Paederin is a protein synthesis inhibitor that halts cell division, leading to vesiculation and necrotic breakdown of the epidermis. The resultant damage facilitates secondary infection, especially in austere conditions. Between October 2022 and July 2023, several US special operations teams forward deployed to various countries in East Africa reported over 17 cases of

Land use around influences the entomological community in lettuce horticultural systems.

The complexity of the agroecosystem can also be assessed by the different land uses in the system and the surroundings, being a relevant way to assess the heterogeneity of the landscape and the effects on the community of interest, in this case, entomofauna. Thus, the objective of this work is to verify how the use of soil in the surroundings of Chilean lettuce horticultural systems, in the Coquimbo Region, alters the entomological community of the crop. Insect sampling was conducted (February 2021 to March 2022) using yellow pan traps. Two sites will be sampled on each of the seven studied le

Entomological and Molecular Surveillance of Anopheles Mosquitoes in Freetown, Sierra Leone, 2019.

Background: Malaria is endemic in Sierra Leone, with stable and perennial transmission in all parts of the country. At present, the main prevention and control measures for mosquito vectors here involve insecticide treated nets (ITN) and indoor residual spraying (IRS). The most recent entomological surveillance was conducted prior to the civil war, between 1990 and 1994. Therefore, a new entomological surveillance required to support targeted malaria control strategies. Methods:Anopheles mosquitoes were collected between June and December 2019 using the light trap method. On these, we conducte

Entomological investigation following the resurgence of human visceral leishmaniasis in southern Algeria.

Visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis are the main endemic vector born diseases in Algeria. In the Hoggar region (extreme south of the country) human visceral leishmaniasis (HVL) is known to be sporadic but during the last decade the number of cases has increased significantly. In 2010, a peak of HVL cases was registered mostly among children. Therefore an entomological survey and a retrospective study on HVL cases were carried out in order to explore the transmission of the disease. Among the sand fly caught Phlebotomus bergeroti was the most frequent species (68%) followed by Sergentomyia sch

[Entomological survey in the historical focus of human African trypanosomiasis of Bendje (Gabon)].

The situation of human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) is poorly known in Gabon. Most of the historical foci have not been investigated for more than 15 years. Few cases are passively recorded from the historical focus of Bendjé; they involved mainly fishermen but determining their contamination site is difficult because of their mobility due to their activity. The presence of these cases in that focus could favour its reactivation if the vector is still there. In order to assess a potential transmission risk in that area, an entomological survey has been carried out in it. Traps w

Entomological patterns in the human African trypanosomiasis focus of Komo Mondah, Gabon.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of sleeping sickness is still considerable in the Komo Mondah focus, in spite of case-detection strategy. A combined strategy that associated both mass screening and vector control is effective for the control of the disease. In the perspective of a targeted vector control in main transmission sites, we have carried out an entomological survey in the epicentre of the focus. OBJECTIVES: To determine tsetse flies distribution, human-fly contact point and eventually risk factors for acquisition of the disease. METHODS: "Vavoua" traps were set for Glossina in four bioto

Entomological investigations in Chichaoua: an emerging epidemic focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Morocco.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania tropica Wright seems to be an emerging disease in Chichaoua, a province located in southwestern Morocco. In this study, sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) were collected from 12 stations. Sticky traps were placed in domestic, peridomestic, and sylvatic sites. In total, 3,787 specimens consisting of 10 species (seven Phlebotomus and three Sergentomiya) were identified. Phlebotomus perniciosus Newstead, the predominant species, was abundant, especially in mountainous areas. Phlebotomus sergenti Parrot (12%) was found in all studied villages where it was a

Entomologic and serologic evidence of zoonotic transmission of Babesia microti, eastern Switzerland.

We evaluated human risk for infection with Babesia microti at a site in eastern Switzerland where several B. microti-infected nymphal Ixodes ricinus ticks had been found. DNA from pooled nymphal ticks amplified by polymerase chain reaction was highly homologous to published B. microti sequences. More ticks carried babesial infection in the lower portion of the rectangular 0.7-ha grid than in the upper (11% vs. 0.8%). In addition, we measured seroprevalence of immunoglobulin (Ig) G antibodies against B. microti antigen in nearby residents. Serum from 1.5% of the 396 human residents of the regio

The impact of environmental and entomological factors on intervillage filarial focality in the Nile Delta.

In the Nile Delta of Egypt, levels of W. bancrofti infection in humans vary among nearby villages. Ecological and entomological factors that might explain variability between adjacent villages, El Qolzom (QOL) and Kafr Shorafa (KSH) with respective 10.8% and 2.1% microfilaria (MF) prevalence were examined. The epidemiological study covered 127 and 79 houses scattered in QOL and KSH, respectively, and described 25 items relating to housing characters, socio-economic state and human activities. It revealed that QOL is more rural than KSH, and therefore would be more favorable to the vector mosqu

[Entomologic study on the transmission of onchocerciasis in a forest-savanna transition area of Cameroon].

An entomological study was conducted in the basin area of middle Sanaga (Cameroon) in order to document the pattern of onchocerciasis transmission in a region where a high prevalence of infection had been recorded in villages located 30 km from the main rivers. The main vector of O. volvulus was found to be S. squamosum s.s. No breeding site was found in the small tributaries of the Sanaga and Mbam Rivers, and the dispersal of S. damnosum s.l. in the area thus appeared to be particularly high. The highest blackfly population densities were recorded during the long rainy season, and a second pe
