A review of zygomycosis due to Basidiobolus ranarum.

Zygomycosis due to Basidiobolus ranarum (entomophthoromycosis basidiobolae, subcutaneous zygomycosis, subcutaneous phycomycosis, basidiobolomycosis) is a granulomatous infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissues characterized by the formation of fluctuant firm and non-tender swellings, generally on the extremities, trunk and rarely other parts of the body. The causative agent is common in soil, decaying vegetable matter, and the gastrointestinal tracts of amphibians, reptiles, fish and bats. It is presumed that infection is acquired through exposure to B. ranarum following minor trauma to s

Colonic basidiobolomycosis in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

BACKGROUND: Basidiobolus ranarum belongs to the Entomophthorales order and the Zygomycetes class. This fungus is an environmental saprophyte that can be found in soil and rotting vegetables.Primarily restricted to tropical regions including Asia, Africa, and South America. It might cause chronic inflammatory diseases, mostly affect subcutaneous tissue. Systemic infections involving the gastrointestinal tract are extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we present a 44-year-old Persian man with the past medical history of lupus erythematosus with colicky abdominal pain started from three mon

Liposomal amphotericin B in the treatment of pediatric gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis is a rare fungal infection caused by Basidiobolus ranarum, increasingly recognized as an intestinal pathogen in children. Its clinical features closely mimic malignancy or inflammatory bowel disease, leading to frequent diagnostic delays. Although endemic in regions such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Oman, sporadic cases occur worldwide. Amphotericin B-liposomal remains a cornerstone therapy for invasive fungal disease, but no standardized treatment protocol for pediatric gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis has been established. CASE PRESENTATION:

Rhinoentomophthoromycosis: a rare case report.

Entomophthoromycosis is chronic granulomatous fungal infection with varied presentation as subcutaneous, mucocutaneous and visceral infections. The majority of the subcutaneous infection caused by entomophthoralean fungi involves Basidiobolus spp, C. coronatus, or C. incongruous. A case of rhinoentomophthoromycosis in an immunocompetent male involving maxillary sinus and nose is presented. The patient was clinically diagnosed as malignancy of nose but microscopy and histopathology of the aspirate clinched the diagnosis. The patient responded to antifungal therepy.

Ocular basidiobolomycosis - Rare presentation: A case report.

Basidiobolus ranarum is an uncommon pathogen in ocular infections. It has been previously reported from subcutaneous and gastrointestinal infections. Here, we report a rare case of ocular infection caused by B. ranarum. A 21-year-old male patient presented with visual loss and pain in the right eye due to corneal abscess following an injury while welding. KOH mount performed was indicative of fungal hyphae. Fungal culture revealed growth of B. ranarum. Meanwhile, the patient was treated with antifungal (topical natamycin and oral ketoconazole) along with total corneal transplantation. B. ranar

Causes of mortality of the Wyoming toad.

Wyoming toads (Bufo baxteri) that died from January 1989 to June 1996 were submitted to the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory (Laramie, Wyoming, USA) for postmortem evaluation. These consisted of 108 free-ranging toads and 170 animals from six captive populations. Ninety-seven (90%) of 108 free-ranging toad carcasses were submitted during September and October. From 1989 to 1992, 27 (77%) of 35 mortalities in the captive populations occurred in October, November, and December. From 1993 to 1996, mortality in captive toads occurred without a seasonal pattern and coincided with changes in hibe

Gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis in a patient suffering from duodenal ulcer with perforation: First case report from Italy.

Gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis (GIB), an unusual fungal infection caused by the fungus Basidiobolus ranarum, is rarely reported in the medical literature. GIB is difficult to diagnose because its clinical presentation is non-specific and has no identifiable risk factors. We report here the first case of GIB diagnosed in Italy in a patient suffering from a duodenal ulcer with perforation. The patient was successfully treated with itraconazole. The absence of non-specific signs and symptoms of GIB may delay a definitive diagnosis and treatment. A microbiological investigation should always

Gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis in Arizona: clinical and epidemiological characteristics and review of the literature.

Gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis (GIB) is an unusual fungal infection that is rarely reported in the medical literature. From April 1994 through May 1999, 7 cases of GIB occurred in Arizona, 4 from December 1998 through May 1999. We reviewed the clinical characteristics of the patients and conducted a case-control study to generate hypotheses about potential risk factors. All patients had histopathologic signs characteristic of basidiobolomycosis. Five patients were male (median age, 52 years; range, 37--59 years) and had a history of diabetes mellitus (in 3 patients), peptic ulcer disease

Fungi that Infect Humans.

Fungi must meet four criteria to infect humans: growth at human body temperatures, circumvention or penetration of surface barriers, lysis and absorption of tissue, and resistance to immune defenses, including elevated body temperatures. Morphogenesis between small round, detachable cells and long, connected cells is the mechanism by which fungi solve problems of locomotion around or through host barriers. Secretion of lytic enzymes, and uptake systems for the released nutrients, are necessary if a fungus is to nutritionally utilize human tissue. Last, the potent human immune system evolved in

Rhinoentomophthoromycosis.

A sixty year old patient presented with a slowly progressive swelling of the nose, of one year duration, suggesting a clinical diagnosis of subcutaneous zygomycosis. On investigation, the tissue fungal culture grew Conidiobolus coronatus, confirming the diagnosis as rhinoentomophthoromycosis. He was treated with a combination of oral fluconazole and oral potassium iodide for a total period of 5 months. His symptoms subsided completely. Serial CT scanning of paranasal sinuses showed the gradual resolution of the swelling, in response to the treatment. Early detection of the disease and combinat

A bimodal analysis of clinical phenotypes and eosinophilic responses as prognostic indicators in gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis.

OBJECTIVES: Gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis (GIB) is an emerging infection caused by Basidiobolus ranarum (Entomophthorales), typically producing chronic granulomatous inflammation in immunocompetent hosts and remains under-recognized in endemic regions. We compared pediatric and adult disease trajectories and assessed whether absolute eosinophil count (AEC) is associated with outcome. METHODS: We conducted a 10-year (2015-2024) single-center retrospective observational study at The Royal Hospital, Muscat, Oman, including 13 patients with GIB diagnosed primarily by characteristic histopat

Subcutaneous Basidiobolomycosis Resembling Fournier's Gangrene.

Basidiobolomycosis is an uncommon cutaneous zygomycete infection typically seen in immunocompetent individuals. Diagnosis can be made by biopsy and fungal culture of the lesion. Treatment with Potassium iodide and co-trimoxazole is simple and effective. Early and accurate diagnosis of basidiobolomycosis is essential to avoid dissemination and mortality. We present a case with basidiobolomycosis resembling Fournier's gangrene.

Subcutaneous zygomycosis in children: 2 case reports.

Basidiobolus ranarum is an uncommon subcutaneous zygomycosis mostly found in immunocompetent children in tropical countries. Presence of slow growing non-tender, non-inflammatory, subcutaneous swelling that does not spread beyond the subcutaneous tissue are classic clinical features. The authors report two cases of subcutaneous zygomycosis which tissue cultures were positive for Basidiobolus ranarum. The first case was a 10-months-old boy presented with prolonged high fever and a rapidly expanding ulcerated plaque unresponsive to systemic antibiotic. The second case was a 2-years-old girl pres
