Is nocturnal enuresis a predisposing factor for the overactive bladder?

BACKGROUND/AIM: This study aimed to perform a limited observational study to ascertain whether there is statistical support that nocturnal enuresis (NE) is a predisposing factor in the development of overactive bladder (OAB). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors recruited patients diagnosed with OAB over a period of twelve months, and those who declared a history of NE were asked additional questions regarding the features of their NE. RESULTS: A total of 285 patients were diagnosed with overactive bladder, and 98 (34.38%) of them had previously displayed NE symptoms that had diminished before

The amount of urine voided in bed by children with enuresis.

INTRODUCTION: Enuretic children wet their beds either because of nocturnal polyuria or nocturnal detrusor overactivity. Polyuric children often respond to desmopressin, whereas children with nocturnal detrusor overactivity are often therapy resistant and may have low daytime voided volumes. It is logical to assume that the enuretic event in children with nocturnal polyuria occurs with a full bladder, i.e. with the enuretic voided volume (EVV) close to the child's expected bladder capacity (EBC) for his/her age. However, the EVV has only rarely been studied, and little is known about how it rel

Combination treatment of nocturnal enuresis with desmopressin and indomethacin.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the effect of combining indomethacin and desmopressin in treating children with monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (MNE) and desmopressin-resistant nocturnal polyuria. METHODS: Twenty-three children with MNE, nocturnal polyuria, and partial or no response to desmopressin were recruited from incontinence clinics of our tertiary referral center. We used a randomized single-arm crossover placebo-controlled study design consisting of two 3-week treatment periods with a combination of desmopressin (0.4 mg) and indomethacin (50 mg) or desmopressin and placebo at bedtime.

The biofeedback treatment for non-monosymptomatic enuresis nocturna.

AIMS: Enuresis is a child older than 5 years wetting in discrete portions during sleep. It has two subgroups: monosymptomatic enuresis nocturna (MSEN) and non-monosymptomatic enuresis nocturna (NMSEN). In this research, we specifically aimed to examine the effect of biofeedback in NMSEN. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the hospital records of 182 children with NMSEN who were refractory to urotherapy modifications and directed to biofeedback therapies between 2005 and 2010. Enuresis before and after biofeedback therapies was evaluated. One or less enuretic night in a month was defined as

Nocturnal enuresis: A topic review and institution experience.

The objective is to provide a review of nocturnal enuresis (NE), including its epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, evaluation, and current management. We also set to provide further insight on the treatment of this condition from the experience derived from patients cared for at our tertiary-care institution. NE affects approximately 15% of all children at 5-year-old, affecting boys more frequently than girls. At our large university tertiary pediatric urology center, NE and incontinence, in general, is one the most common chief complaints prompting urologic care. In this review, we exami

Treating nocturnal enuresis in children in primary care.

Nocturnal enuresis is defined as involuntary wetting while asleep at least twice a week in children over the age of five. Primary nocturnal enuresis describes those children who have always been wet. Secondary nocturnal enuresis is defined as a relapse after a child has been completely dry for at least six months. Up to the age of nine years, nocturnal enuresis is twice as common in boys than girls but thereafter there is no sex difference in prevalence. At the age of five, 2% of children wet every night, and 1% are still wetting every night in their late teens. Bedwetting is not primarily cau

Facial patterns and primary nocturnal enuresis in children.

PURPOSE: Aims of our study are evaluating: (1) the prevalence of dolicofacial pattern among enuretic and control-group children, (2) the prevalence of an abnormal head posture in bedwetters, and (3) the correlation with sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBD) identified by polysomnography (PSG) recording. Nocturnal enuresis is a multifactorial disease, but has been related also to obstructive sleep-disordered breathing in both adults and children. Anatomical factors recognized to predispose to SRBD include adenotonsillar hypertrophy, neuromuscular disorders, craniofacial abnormalities associa

The evaluation and treatment of therapy-resistant enuresis: a review.

Children with enuresis that neither responds to the alarm or to desmopressin medication usually have nocturnal detrusor over-activity combined with high arousal thresholds as a cause for their bedwetting. The evaluation of these children is focused on 1) excluding underlying pathology such as kidney disease, urinary tract infection or neurogenic bladder, 2) looking for concomitant day-time bladder problems or constipation, and 3) detecting possible reasons for failure of alarm treatment. A bladder diary is essential, but blood tests, radiological examinations or invasive procedures are seldom

The evaluation of desmopressin in treatment of adolescent nocturnal enuresis.

This study was designed to determine the effectiveness of desmopressin in the treatment of adolescent nocturnal enuresis and factors that may predict responsiveness. Eighteen adolescents (14 boys, 4 girls) with monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis were treated with oral desmopressin for three months, starting with 0.2 mg at night and controlling the symptoms every two weeks. After this period, desmopressin was used every other day and the dose was reduced gradually. The treatment was completed at the end of six months. As factors that may predict response before treatment, a range of variables (

Urodynamic findings in adults with primary nocturnal enuresis.

PURPOSE: We evaluate bladder function in adults with primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE) since childhood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We recruited all patients older than 16 years who presented to our PNE clinic with persistent enuretic symptoms. All patients were assessed by a detailed voiding diary, uroflowmetry and ultrasonography of the urinary tract. Urodynamic studies were performed for those with moderate or severe PNE (more than 3 wet nights a week). RESULTS: The study included 18 males and 29 females with a mean age of 20 years (range 16 to 43). Of these patients 37 (79%) had moderate or se

Desmopressin for nocturnal enuresis in nephrogenic diabetes insipidus.

We have investigated two unrelated families, in which two children had inherited primary nocturnal enuresis, and nephrogenic diabetes insipidus caused by new mutations in the aquaporin-2 gene (AQP2). The mutant AQP2 proteins were inactive, suggesting that administration of desmopressin could not concentrate the urine in these patients. However, treatment with desmopressin resolved primary nocturnal enuresis completely. This observation questions the notion that desmopressin resolves primary nocturnal enuresis through pharmacological manipulation of renal concentrating ability only. Desmopressi

[Enuresis nocturna--practical advice for examination and treatment].

Children suffering from nocturnal enuresis have better self-esteem when they stay dry. A medical examination is necessary in order to exclude specific causes. The choice of treatment should be based on: motivation and age of the child, nocturnal polyuria versus bladder capacity, possibilities to borrow an alarm device, and follow-up. Informed choice treatment should be offered. Treatment with an alarm device and minimum standards are discussed. Desmopressin for short-term treatment or for three month periods are recommended for patient who respond to desmopressin. If organic causes are suspect

Diurnal and nocturnal enuresis in a 6 year old.

Justin is a 6-year-old boy diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder who presented with daytime and night-time wetting. He had been toilet trained at the age of 3 years but was back in diapers as a result of the enuresis. His bowel movements were normal. The initial evaluation consisted of a urinalysis, urine culture, serum creatinine level, and renal/bladder ultrasound examination. The urine studies were normal. The serum creatinine level was elevated at 1.0 mg/dL. The ultrasound examination revealed bilateral mild hydronephrosis and a thickened bladder wall. A voiding cystouret

[Primary enuresis. Presentation of a series of 93 cases].

The present study was conducted at the outpatient service of Urology. It comprised 93 patients diagnosed as having primary enuresis exclusively. All patients with underlying urological or extraurological conditions were excluded from the study. All the available material on this subject indicate that primary enuresis may be a clinical manifestation of delayed maturation of control of micturition at the level of the CNS. It is important to consider the family history, especially the paternal. Other factors; i.e., social, school, environment, etc., may be relatively important in the presentation

Prevalence and risk factors for childhood nocturnal enuresis.

A large population based study was carried out to describe the epidemiology of nocturnal enuresis and to outline medical management of the problem. Parents of 1,806 schoolchildren were surveyed and prevalence was ascertained at 13% with two thirds classified as primary enuretics. Significant associated factors included social class, unemployment, family stress and a parental family history of enuresis. Enuretics were more likely to be behind at school, have behavioural problems, soiling and daytime wetting. Enuresis was distressful for the family yet most children never saw a doctor about the

Desmopressin for diabetes insipidus, hemostatic disorders and enuresis.

Arginine vasopressin preparations have been used in the treatment of diabetes insipidus for many years. Compared with older antidiuretic agents, the synthetic analog desmopressin is more potent, longer acting and easier to use. It is available for intravenous, subcutaneous and intranasal administration. Desmopressin may be useful in the treatment of hemostatic disorders such as von Willebrand's disease and hemophilia A. It has also been used for nocturnal enuresis. The vasopressor effects of arginine vasopressin preparations have been exploited for use as a temporizing measure in controlling a

Childhood's enuresis in the history of women with hyperprolactinemic amenorrhea.

Hyperprolactinemia, or elevated levels of prolactin in blood, is a normal physiologic post-partum response in lactating women. Non-lactating women with hyperprolactinemia often present during the reproductive years since they may have amenorrhea, galactorrhea, or both. Hypersecretion of prolactin is most commonly due to pituitary adenomas. Women with hyperprolactinemic amenorrhea are often quite anxious, depressed and hostile. It has been hypothesized that these psychological symptoms might antecede the onset of hyperprolactinemia and that hyperprolactinemia may be associated with early develo
