Environmental Cadmium Exposure Exacerbated Bone Loss in NAFLD Mice.

Due to rapid urbanization and industrialization, Cadmium (Cd) contamination is widespread. Meanwhile, the prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been increasing. Cd is linked to bone damage. However, the osteotoxicity of environmental Cd exposure in NAFLD remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects and potential mechanisms of Cd on bone metabolism in NAFLD mice. NAFLD mice were treated with 50 mg/L cadmium chloride in drinking water for 12 weeks. Bone microstructures were scanned by Micro-CT. Liver lipid droplets and fibrosis were measured by his

Maternal hypothermia from environmental exposure in the third trimester.

A primigravida at 32 weeks gestation developed hypothermia after prolonged exposure to the elements at -30.0°C. Her core temperature dropped to 29.8°C with associated foetal bradycardia. Passive rewarming was undertaken with forced warm air blankets and warmed IV fluids. The foetal heart rate normalised once normothermia was achieved. Serial foetal assessments showed appropriate growth and normal Doppler studies. She went to on deliver a healthy term infant. This case highlights conservative management and prioritising of maternal well-being with a good maternal and foetal outcome.

Impact of environmental toxin exposure on male fertility potential.

Idiopathic infertility is the most common individual diagnosis in male infertility, representing nearly 44% of cases. Research studies dating over the last half-century consistently demonstrate a decline in male fertility that is incompletely explained by obesity, known genetic causes, or diet and lifestyle changes alone. Human exposures have changed dramatically over the same time course as this fertility decline. Synthetic chemicals surround us. Some are benevolent; however, many are known to cause disruption of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and impair spermatogenesis. More than 80

Environmental Contamination and Occupational Exposure of Algerian Hospital Workers.

Guidelines are in place to assure limited occupational exposure to cytostatic drugs. Even though this has led to a reduction in exposure, several studies reported quantifiable concentrations of these compounds in healthcare workers. In this study, we evaluated occupational exposure to cytostatic drugs in hospital workers from the University Hospital in Tlemcen, Algeria. Monitoring was performed by collecting wipe samples from surfaces, objects, personal protective equipment (gloves and masks) and from the skin of employees at an Algerian university hospital. Wipe samples were analyzed with ult

Prenatal exposure to environmental factors and congenital limb defects.

Limb congenital defects afflict approximately 0.6:1000 live births. In addition to genetic factors, prenatal exposure to drugs and environmental toxicants, represents a major contributing factor to limb defects. Examples of well-recognized limb teratogenic agents include thalidomide, warfarin, valproic acid, misoprostol, and phenytoin. While the mechanism by which these agents cause dymorphogenesis is increasingly clear, prediction of the limb teratogenicity of many thousands of as yet uncharacterized environmental factors (pollutants) remains inexact. This is limited by the insufficiencies of

Environmental lead exposure and otoacoustic emissions in Andean children.

Studies relating sensory hearing impairment to lead (Pb) exposure in children have presented inconsistent results. The objective of this study was to measure distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE), sounds emanating from the outer hair cells of the inner ear, in Pb-exposed children to determine the effects of Pb poisoning on the inner ear. DPOAE were recorded for 9 f(2) frequencies from 1187 to 7625 Hz on 102 ears of 53 Pb-exposed children (aged 6-16 yr) residing in Pb-contaminated environments in the Andes Mountains of Ecuador where Pb glazing of ceramics is the primary livelihood. [Environmental tobacco smoke exposure in pregnancy and postpartum period].

Among available methods to estimate the exposure to tobacco smoke, cotinine, a major metabolite of nicotine is considered the most accurate marker. The aim of this study was to evaluate environmental tobacco smoke exposure in pregnancy and postpartum period. The cohort study was conducted in 2004 and 2006 in public maternity units in Lodz, Poland. The study population consisted of women between 32-36 weeks of pregnancy who have quit smoking within 2 months before pregnancy or no later than three months prior to participation in the study. Women were interviewed twice: during pregnancy and thre

Hazardous anticancer drugs in health care: environmental exposure assessment.

Exposure of healthcare workers to anticancer drugs became problematic in the 1970s. Shortly thereafter, studies began documenting exposure of healthcare workers to these drugs. Investigations employing biological markers, such as urine mutagenicity, chromosomal aberrations, sister chromatid exchanges, and micronuclei, demonstrated associations between occupational exposures and elevated marker levels. Other analytical methods emerged to monitor workplaces where drugs were handled. These contemporary studies uncovered widespread contamination of drugs on work surfaces, trace amounts in air samp

Environmental tobacco smoke exposure in women with lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Investigations on environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure that include source intensity, childhood exposure, and association with histologic subtypes among never smoking lung cancer cases are limited. We report the patterns of ETS exposure history in a clinical cohort of women with newly diagnosed lung cancer. METHODS: From 1997 to 2001, 810 women with lung cancer were interviewed to obtain data including the source, intensity, and duration of ETS exposure. In this descriptive study, relationships between smoking history, ETS exposure, and lung cancer histologic subtypes were a

Absence of tubular proteinuria following environmental exposure to chromium.

Certain chromium compounds are known to be nephrotoxic, but renal damage from long-term environmental or occupational exposure to chromium has not been documented. To detect possible preclinical renal damage, we tested the urine of 55 lifelong residents of an area contaminated with chromium landfill. The levels of four proteins were determined in urine samples: (1) human intestinal alkaline phosphatase, (2) tissue nonspecific alkaline phosphatase, (3) N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase, and (4) microalbumin. No elevated levels of proteins were found, and there were no significant correlations bet

Environmental and biological monitoring in carbon disulfide exposure assessment.

Carbon disulfide (CS2) exposure was assessed in several ways in a viscose fiber plant. Environmental exposure was measured by static area sampling and by personal monitoring using diffusive passive ORSA-5 Draeger badges. At the same time, as biological indicators of exposure the iodine-azide test (IAT) and 2-thiothiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid (TTCA) in urine samples obtained at the end of work shift were performed. The aim was to estimate the relationship between parameters of environmental exposure and biological indicators of internal exposure as well as to determine the influence of the exp

Health risks related to environmental and occupational lead exposure.

Lead is a ubiquitous toxic metal. This review summarizes the toxicokinetics and toxicology of lead, and the methods to measure blood lead (BL), summarizes recently published studies, and ends with an appraisal of recent regulations to protect exposed workers. Lead exposure is caused via inhalation of lead-contaminated particulate and via gastrointestinal uptake. To assess BL, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry are commonly applied. BL in the general population has declined drastically, approaching pre-industrial levels, at least in de

Challenges in Toxicological Risk Assessment of Environmental Cadmium Exposure.

Dietary exposure to a high dose of cadmium (Cd) ≥ 100 µg/day for at least 50 years or a lifetime intake of Cd ≥ 1 g can cause severe damage to the kidneys and bones. Alarmingly, however, exposure to a dose of Cd between 10 and 15 µg/day and excretion of Cd at a rate below 0.5 µg/g creatinine have been associated with an increased risk of diseases with a high prevalence worldwide, such as chronic kidney disease (CKD), fragile bones, diabetes, and cancer. These findings have cast considerable doubt on a "tolerable" Cd exposure level of 58 µg/day for a 70 kg person, while questioning the threshol

Environmental pollutant exposure can exacerbate COVID-19 neurologic symptoms.

Neurologic symptoms have been reported in some COVID-19 patients. However, little is known on what factors influence the risk of developing these symptoms. While some studies suggest that exposure to pollution is associated with higher rates of SARS-CoV-2 infection, its role is unknown in the development of neurologic symptoms in COVID-19 patients. The response of the central nervous system (CNS) to a SARS-CoV-2 infection may be influenced by its inflammatory state. Interestingly, environmental pollutants such as particulate matter may have neuroinflammatory effects, providing a possible link

GLI3 Links Environmental Arsenic Exposure and Human Fetal Growth.

Although considerable evidence suggests that in utero arsenic exposure affects children's health, these data are mainly from areas of the world where groundwater arsenic levels far exceed the World Health Organization limit of 10 μg/L. We, and others, have found that more common levels of in utero arsenic exposure may also impact children's health. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. To address this issue, we analyzed the expression of key developmental genes in fetal placenta in a birth cohort of women using unregulated water supplies in a US region with elevat
