Multistate outbreak of Salmonella Mbandaka infections linked to sweetened puffed wheat cereal - United States, 2018.

In May of 2018, PulseNet, the national molecular subtyping network for enteric pathogens, detected a multistate cluster of illnesses caused by an uncommon molecular subtype of Salmonella serovar Mbandaka. A case was defined as an illness in a person infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Mbandaka with illness onset on or after 3 March 2018 and before 1 September 2018. One-hundred thirty-six cases from 36 states were identified; 35 hospitalisations and no deaths were reported. Ill people ranged in age from <1 year to 95 years (median: 57 years). When standardised questionnaires did not

The Health Effects of Climate Change on Children: Pediatricians Must Be Part of the Solution.

Climate change is already impacting children's health in a variety of ways. Indian children are among the most severely affected; they are experiencing respiratory illnesses from air pollution, heat-related illnesses, malnutrition, vector- and water-borne diseases; and mental health problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder from weather disasters. There is a need to increase awareness and capacity building among paediatricians for understanding the impact of climate change on the health of children and educating parents about preventive measures. Detailed environmental history taking wil

Norovirus outbreak in an elementary school--District of Columbia, February 2007.

On February 8, 2007, the District of Columbia Department of Health (DCDOH) was notified of an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis in an elementary school (prekindergarten through sixth grade). The school nurse reported that 27 students and two staff members had become ill during February 4--8 with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea; because symptoms lasted <48 hours, a viral etiology was suspected. DCDOH recommended two preinvestigation interventions, which were implemented the same evening (February 8): 1) more thorough handwashing and 2) bleach cleaning of all shared environmental surfaces with a

Chilblain-like leukaemia cutis.

Chilblain, also known as pernio, is an abnormal inflammatory response to cold, moist environmental conditions. Persistent or atypical lesions should prompt investigation to exclude underlying systemic illness. We describe a case of acute myeloid leukaemia that presented with chilblain-like leukaemia cutis.

Associations between psychological and respiratory distress in post-deployment Veterans.

Since September 11, 2001, over 2.7 million United States service members have deployed to South-West Asia and the Middle East and have been exposed to environmental hazards and psychological trauma. Many of these service members have returned with medical and psychological illnesses, some of which have proved complex and resistant to treatment. One notable constellation of symptoms is post-deployment respiratory illness, which has become a focus of research and policy efforts. The present study sought to examine the impact of post-deployment psychological distress on respiratory symptom severi

Medication adherence mediates the association between illness perceptions and psychotic symptoms in patients with schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the knowledge, attitude, and behavior dimensions of medication adherence mediate the associations between illness perceptions and psychotic symptoms in patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited 142 patients with schizophrenia who had stable symptom control from a regional teaching hospital in southern Taiwan. Standardized instruments were used to assess illness perceptions, medication knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and psychotic symptoms. Simple mediation analyses were conducted using the PROCESS macro in SPSS. RESULTS: Med

Risk factors for bulimia nervosa: a controlled study of parental psychiatric illness and divorce.

Twenty five women with normal-weight bulimia nervosa were compared with 25 age- and weight-matched women without bulimia nervosa on measures of parental psychiatric illness. Case and control probands, as well as their parents, completed the Family History Research Diagnostic Criteria (FH-RDC) interview and a battery of self-report instruments. Case probands and controls were divided into two groups based on evidence for parental psychiatric illness. The assignment of parental psychiatric illness was made by (a) a positive parental history of alcoholism or depression from the FH-RDC; or (b) evi

Old Friends in New Places: Exploring the Role of Extraintestinal E. coli in Intestinal Disease and Foodborne Illness.

The emergence of new antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli pathotypes associated with human disease has led to an investigation in terms of the origins of these pathogens. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, unspecified agents are responsible for 38.4 million of the 48 million (80%) cases of foodborne illnesses each year in the United States. It is hypothesized that environmental E. coli not typically associated with the ability to cause disease in humans could potentially be responsible for some of these cases. In order for an environmental E. coli isolate to have the

Factors affecting the quality of life of chronic dialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Patients on hemodialysis must adjust their life plans to the treatment. They are aware of losing their health and independence. Therefore, acceptance of illness (AI) is important and allows the patient to adjust to new situation and alleviates negative emotions. METHODS: The aim of study was to assess the impact of AI and other socioclinical variables on hemodialysis patients' quality of life (QoL). The study included 100 patients aged 20-85 (M = 57), treated with hemodialysis for at least 2 years. Two validated instruments were used: the Acceptance of Illness Scale (AIS) and the

Association between wetland presence and incidence of Salmonella enterica serotype Javiana infections in selected US sites, 2005-2011.

Salmonella causes an estimated 1·2 million illnesses annually in the USA. Salmonella enterica serotype Javiana (serotype Javiana) is the fourth most common serotype isolated from humans, with the majority of illnesses occurring in southeastern states. The percentage of wetland cover by wetland type and the average incidence rates of serotype Javiana infection in selected counties of the Foodborne Disease Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) were examined. This analysis explored the relationship between wetland environments and incidence in order to assess whether regional differences in envir

Outbreak of campylobacteriosis associated with consumption of raw peas.

BACKGROUND: Campylobacter jejuni is a leading cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide, and most cases are identified as sporadic events rather than as parts of recognized outbreaks. We report findings from a substantial 2008 campylobacteriosis outbreak with general implications for fresh produce safety. METHODS: We conducted a matched case-control study to determine the source of the outbreak and enhanced surveillance to identify additional cases. Clinical and environmental specimens were tested for Campylobacter, and isolates were subtyped by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). RESULT

Circulation of reassortant influenza A(H7N9) viruses in poultry and humans, Guangdong Province, China, 2013.

Influenza A(H7N9) virus emerged in eastern China in February 2013 and continues to circulate in this region, but its ecology is poorly understood. In April 2013, the Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) implemented environmental and human syndromic surveillance for the virus. Environmental samples from poultry markets in 21 city CDCs (n=8,942) and respiratory samples from persons with influenza-like illness or pneumonia (n=32,342) were tested; viruses isolated from 6 environmental samples and 16 patients were sequenced. Sequence analysis showed co-circulation of

Health effects of ambient air pollution--recent research development and contemporary methodological challenges.

Exposure to high levels of air pollution can cause a variety of adverse health outcomes. Air quality in developed countries has been generally improved over the last three decades. However, many recent epidemiological studies have consistently shown positive associations between low-level exposure to air pollution and health outcomes. Thus, adverse health effects of air pollution, even at relatively low levels, remain a public concern. This paper aims to provide an overview of recent research development and contemporary methodological challenges in this field and to identify future research d

Health responses to a new high-voltage power line route: design of a quasi-experimental prospective field study in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: New high-voltage power transmission lines will be introduced due to increasing demand for reliable and renewable energy supplies. Some residents associate non-specific health complaints with exposure to electromagnetic fields from nearby power lines. This study protocol describes the design and rationale of a prospective study investigating whether the introduction of a new power line triggers health responses in residents living nearby. METHODS/DESIGN: The study is designed as a quasi-experimental field study with two pretests during the construction of a new power line route, an

Wèrè and the Ontological Politics of Global Mental Health: Distributed Cognition in Yorùbá Traditional Medicine.

Global mental health initiatives increasingly replace indigenous diagnostic categories with neuropsychiatric frameworks, framing this as anti-stigma progress. Drawing on twenty years of ethnographic research with traditional healers in southwestern Nigeria and my position as both researcher and practitioner, this paper examines wèrè-the Yorùbá term for mental illness-to reveal fundamental ontological incommensurability between Western personalistic medicine and Yorùbá ecological-cosmological healing. Through linguistic analysis, micro-phenomenological interviews, and participant observation, I
