Climate change: Overview of risks to pregnant persons and their offspring.

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges confronting humanity. Pregnant persons, their unborn children, and offspring are particularly vulnerable, as evidenced by adverse perinatal outcomes and increased rates of childhood illnesses. Environmental inequities compound the problem of maternal health inequities, and have given rise to the environmental justice movement.  The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics and other major medical societies have worked to heighten awareness and address the deleterious health effects of climate change and toxic environmental exposures.

Disease and Health Inequalities Attributable to Air Pollutant Exposure in Detroit, Michigan.

The environmental burden of disease is the mortality and morbidity attributable to exposures of air pollution and other stressors. The inequality metrics used in cumulative impact and environmental justice studies can be incorporated into environmental burden studies to better understand the health disparities of ambient air pollutant exposures. This study examines the diseases and health disparities attributable to air pollutants for the Detroit urban area. We apportion this burden to various groups of emission sources and pollutants, and show how the burden is distributed among demographic a

Mapping risks of water injustice and perceptions of privatized drinking water in the United States: A mixed methods approach.

About 2 million people in the United States do not have access to running water or indoor plumbing in their homes. In addition, 30 million more Americans live where water systems operate unsafely. More still could have access to clean and safe drinking water but cannot afford to pay for it. Water privatization has been proposed as both a solution to and an exacerbator of these challenges, but its potential consequences have not been investigated on a national scale. Data from the US Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Drinking Water Information System and the US Center for Disease Control's

Distributional Environmental Injustices for a Minority Group without Minority Status: Arab Americans and Residential Exposure to Carcinogenic Air Pollution in the US.

Distributional environmental injustices in residential exposure to air pollution in Arab American enclaves have not been examined. We conducted our investigation at the census tract-level across the continental United States using a set of socio-demographic variables to predict cancer risk from hazardous air pollutant (HAP) exposure. Arab enclaves had a mean cancer risk score of 44.08, as compared to 40.02 in non-enclave tracts. In terms of the specific origin groups, Moroccan enclaves had the highest cancer risk score (46.93), followed by Egyptian (45.33), Iraqi (43.13), Jordanian (41.67), an

Social inequality in perceived environmental exposures in relation to housing conditions in Germany.

In Germany the impact of socioeconomic factors on environmental exposures and adverse housing conditions has been rarely studied up to now. The aim of our study was to assess whether and, if yes, how perceived exposure to noise and air pollution is influenced by socioeconomic status in Germany. We used data from a large-scale population-based survey. In this survey, data on perceived exposure to noise and air pollution and on socioeconomic status and housing conditions were collected on an individual basis. The study population consisted of 7,275 adults aged 17-98 years (40% women), each repre

Preempting the Development of Antisocial Behavior and Psychopathic Traits.

Antisocial behavior and psychopathic traits are subject to complex patterns of inheritance, gene--environment interactive effects, and powerful environmental influences. Yet genetic factors are important in the etiology of antisocial behavior and psychopathic traits, and identifying youth with an elevated genetic risk may lead to improved interventions and preventive efforts. Additionally, research revealing the importance of gene--environment interactions in the development of antisocial behavior and psychopathic traits should be harnessed to promote more rehabilitative, developmentally appro

The Water Inside and Out: Drinking Water Data, Disparities, and Regulatory Distinctions Among California's Carceral and Noncarceral Water Systems.

BACKGROUND: Critical environmental justice calls attention to prisons, jails, and other carceral facilities as sites key to understanding and transforming environmental injustices. Thus far, however, limited research has examined water provision in carceral facilities. METHODS: This study leverages spatial methods to identify the water systems serving 325 California carceral facilities. We then compare water system characteristics and performance measures across 4,250 water systems categorized into three system types: carceral water systems, partially carceral-serving water systems, and other

Pervasive structural racism in environmental epidemiology.

BACKGROUND: Epistemological biases in environmental epidemiology prevent the full understanding of how racism's societal impacts directly influence health outcomes. With the ability to focus on "place" and the totality of environmental exposures, environmental epidemiologists have an important opportunity to advance the field by proactively investigating the structural racist forces that drive disparities in health. OBJECTIVE: This commentary illustrates how environmental epidemiology has ignored racism for too long. Some examples from environmental health and male infertility are used to ill

The concept of environmental injustice in allergy and asthma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines how environmental injustice contributes to disparities in allergic diseases, including asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis. It focuses on the role of social, geographic, and economic inequities in shaping disease prevalence, severity, and access to care among underrepresented racial and ethnic communities. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies emphasize the persistent exposure of low-income and racially marginalized populations to environmental hazards such as air pollution, substandard housing, and climate-related changes, factors that are linke

Air Quality and Environmental Injustice in India: Connecting Particulate Pollution to Social Disadvantages.

While air pollution levels in India are amongst the highest in the world, the link between exposure to air pollution and social disadvantages has not been systematically examined. Using a distributive environmental justice framework, this study connects fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentration data derived from satellite observations, a global chemical transport model, and ground-based measurements to district level socio-demographic information from the 2011 Census of India. The research objectives are to determine if annual average PM2.5 concentrations (2010) and recent increases in ave

Environmental conflicts and defenders: A global overview.

Recent research and policies recognize the importance of environmental defenders for global sustainability and emphasize their need for protection against violence and repression. However, effective support may benefit from a more systematic understanding of the underlying environmental conflicts, as well as from better knowledge on the factors that enable environmental defenders to mobilize successfully. We have created the global Environmental Justice Atlas to address this knowledge gap. Here we present a large-n analysis of 2743 cases that sheds light on the characteristics of environmental

Inclusion, Sustainability, and Equity at the Heart of a 5.0 Society.

Our everyday reality is perceived as more complex, unpredictable, and filled with barriers created by not-so-evident factors that can stifle thought, reflection, and the desire and energy to act. All of this intertwines with the reduction of physical and psychological well-being for many people, encouraging the presence and escalation of situations of vulnerability which are rapidly increasing nowadays. In addition to the more traditional and known ones, such as vulnerabilities connected to the presence of disabilities or diseases, today other forms of vulnerabilities are strongly emerging, su

Sexual Violence and Abuse Against Children: A First Review Through the Lens of Environmental Criminology.

Most criminal justice responses to address sexual violence and abuse against children are aimed at identifying and incarcerating offenders or at best, trying to prevent them from reoffending. This policy situation, primarily characterized by tertiary intervention strategies, is exacerbated by a lack of evidence-based knowledge about the circumstances in which this phenomenon occurs. This specific information can inform certain types of primary and secondary prevention strategies. In this study, we are taking the first steps to address this situation by (a) organising and reviewing for the firs

Assessment of environmental injustice in Korea using synthetic air quality index and multiple indicators of socioeconomic status: A cross-sectional study.

UNLABELLED: Despite the existence of the universal right to a healthy environment, the right is being violated in some populations. The objective of the current study is to verify environmental discrimination associated with socioeconomic status in Korea, using synthetic air quality index and multiple indicators of socioeconomic status. The concentrations of NO₂(nitrogen dioxide), CO (carbon monoxide), SO₂(sulfur dioxide), PM10 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter <10 μm), and O₃(ozone) in ambient air were integrated into a synthetic air quality index. Socioeconomic status was meas

Geopolitics and mine waste: An overview and future research directions.

This paper examines a critical yet underexplored perspective on resource geopolitics by focusing on mine waste-one of the world's largest waste streams by volume. Traditional studies of resource geopolitics emphasise the governance of raw materials production, trade and supply chains. Our approach positions mine waste as a factor shaping twenty-first century geopolitics and global power dynamics. To demonstrate the analytical value of making this connection, we explore two domains: geopolitical strategies and alliances; and sovereignty and justice. We illustrate how mine waste both reflects an

Toward a global agenda for research in environmental epidemiology.

The global environment is in critical decline. Whether one's concern about environmental epidemiology stems from the perspectives of environmental health, climate change, ecological collapse, or growing inequity, clear problems exist. Natural capital resources are being depleted; disregard for the integrity of ecosystems is entrenched in current business practices. Indeed, despite increasing rhetoric to the contrary, the disregard displayed by those who hold power globally toward long-term sustainability and, thus, the health and well-being of future generations, could be described as wanton.

Small-scale theranostic radiopharmaceutical production using cold kits: a green chemistry perspective.

The global rise of theranostic nuclear medicine continues to increase the environmental and economic pressure associated with radiopharmaceutical production. Large-scale manufacturing, reliant on cyclotrons, GMP-compliant cleanrooms, automated synthesis modules, and disposable plastics, represent the most energy-intensive and waste-generating approach. In contrast, cold kit technologies represent an underutilized strategy to improve sustainability, reduce environmental impact and expand equitable global access to theranostic radiopharmaceuticals. This review evaluates small-scale hospital-base

The developing adolescent brain: Implications for youth justice and children in criminal proceedings.

Adolescence is a unique developmental stage, defined by neural reorganisation and a heightened sensitivity to the social environment. Brain maturation is a prolonged process extending well into the twenties, involving microstructural refinements such as axonal myelination and synaptic pruning, which are partly dependent on environmental input. This period of heightened neuroplasticity coincides with a shift toward peer affiliation and increased susceptibility to risk-taking, particularly in social settings. Consequently, adolescent decision-making should be viewed through a social lens, in whi

A feminist community-based participatory action research approach to advance climate justice.

The purpose of this research is to develop and pilot a feminist informed community based participatory action research approach (f-CBPAR) to examine injustice. CBPAR is a collaborative approach between researchers and community members throughout the research process. F-CBPAR draws on both feminist theory and CBPAR literatures to identify power arrangements that contribute to environmental injustice. Using a f-CBPAR case study approach of primary interview data and descriptive secondary data, this exploratory study identifies climate threats of concern to a rural, farmworker community in Calif

INTRODUCTION: Climate change threatens the environments in which person-centred occupational therapy occurs. Environmental sustainability is directly linked with the health and wellbeing of current and future generations, presenting occupational therapists with a unique advocacy and activist role. As practitioners of the future, there is an urgent need to understand students' attitudes, perceptions of, and self-perceived preparedness for, dealing with environmental determinants of health and intergenerational occupational and climate justice.
