Environmental Aging Enhances Hydrodynamic Driven Microplastics Piezoelectric Catalytic Decomposition of Organic Pollutants.

Microplastics (MPs) are recognized as emerging environmental pollutants. However, their potential role in degrading pollutants under hydrodynamic conditions after environmental aging is frequently overlooked. In this study, three common MPs including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) were investigated for their ability to enhance atrazine (ATZ) degradation after UV aging and under ultrasonic hydrodynamic treatment. Our findings demonstrate that environmental aging significantly boosts the piezoelectric catalytic activity of MPs, consequently accelerating pollutant deg

A Perfect Storm of Pollutants: Environmental Mixtures in the Pathogenesis of Atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis is a complex, multifactorial disease and the leading underlying cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality worldwide. Beyond traditional risk factors, growing evidence highlights the critical role of environmental exposures in modulating atherogenesis. In real-world scenarios, individuals are exposed to complex mixtures of contaminants, including particulate matter, toxic metals, pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals. These combined exposures may exert additive, synergistic or antagonistic effects, resulting in biological response

Environmental Insults to Glucose Metabolism: The Role of Pollutants in Insulin Resistance.

Insulin resistance is a condition of impaired tissue reactivity to insulin. This state is primarily associated with obesity and the lifestyle of modern Western societies, which favors abnormalities of glucose and lipid homeostasis. As a result, more and more people suffer from illnesses that develop because of the disturbed metabolic function of insulin, including type 2 diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and polycystic ovarian syndrome. There are many studies describing the relationship between declining sensitivity to insulin and insufficient physical activity or unhealthy dietary ha

Nano-engineered vitamins as a potential epigenetic modifier against environmental air pollutants.

Air pollution has emerged as a serious threat to human health due to close association with spectrum of chronic ailments including cardiovascular disorders, respiratory diseases, nervous system dysfunctions, diabetes and cancer. Exposure to air-borne pollutants along with poor eating behaviours and inferior dietary quality irreversibly impacts epigenomic landscape, leading to aberrant transcriptional control of gene expression which is central to patho-physiology of non-communicable diseases. It is assumed that nutriepigenomic interventions such as vitamins can control such adverse effects thr

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) as Environmental Pollutants: Occurrence and Mitigation Using Nanomaterials.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) comprise various organic chemicals which are released as gases from different liquids or solids. The nature and impact of the health effects are dependent on the VOCs concentrations and, also, on the exposure time. VOCs are present in different household, industrial or commercial and products, but their accumulation in air and water has primarily gained attention. Among VOCs, trichloroethylene and vinyl chloride are the most toxic and carcinogenic compounds. In order to improve the indoor air and water quality, VOCs can be removed via efficient approaches invo

Influence of agro-environmental pollutants on a biocontrol strain of Bacillus velezensis.

Metal- and pesticide-tolerant biocontrol agents are preferred in integrated pest management, as such strains can be applied in combination with different pesticides. The Bacillus velezensis strain SZMC 6161J proved to be sensitive to copper, nickel, zinc, and cadmium, while manganese elevated its growth. At concentrations higher than 1 mmol L-1 , zinc and iron inhibited the chymotrypsin-like activity of this strain. In addition, trypsin-like protease and palmitoyl esterase activities were insensitive to all tested heavy metals in the applied concentration range. We studied the effects of some

Evaluation of the Exposure to Environmental Pollutants Emanating from National Industrial Complexes.

The industrial complexes built during the course of economic development in South Korea played a pivotal role in the country's rapid economic growth. However, this growth was accompanied by health problems due to the pollutants released from the industrial complexes inevitably located near residential areas, given the limited land area available in South Korea. This study was conducted to evaluate the exposure to each pollutant emanating from industrial complexes for residents living in nearby areas, and to determine the substances requiring priority attention in future surveys. Pollutants wer

Air pollutants may be environmental risk factors in chronic rhinosinusitis disease progression.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the role of environmental exposures in the pathophysiology of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). In this study, we measured the impact of air pollutants (particulate matter 2.5 [PM2.5 ] and black carbon [BC]) on CRS with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) and CRS without nasal polyposis (CRSsNP). METHODS: Spatial modeling from pollutant monitoring sites was used to estimate exposures surrounding residences for patients meeting inclusion criteria (total patients, n = 234; CRSsNP, n = 96; CRSwNP, n = 138). Disease severity outcome measures included modified Lund-Mackay score

Dehalogenation of environmental pollutants in microbial electrolysis cells with biogenic palladium nanoparticles.

Hydrodehalogenation of persistent pollutants, such as the groundwater contaminants trichloroethylene and diatrizoate, are catalyzed by biogenic Pd nanoparticles. As H(2) gas supply for the dehalogenation reactions is still the limiting factor, this study examines in situ H(2) production in the cathode of a microbial electrolysis cell. In a biogenic Pd nanoparticle (bio-Pd) free microbial electrolysis cell (MEC), dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE) with concomitant chloride and ethane formation was achieved in the cathode compartment at a removal rate of 120 g TCE m(-3) total cathode comp

Cysteine synthase overexpression in tobacco confers tolerance to sulfur-containing environmental pollutants.

Cysteine (Cys) synthase [O-acetyl-L-Ser(thiol)-lyase, EC 4.2.99.8; CSase] is responsible for the final step in biosynthesis of Cys. Transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum; F(1)) plants with enhanced CSase activities in the cytosol and in the chloroplasts were generated by cross-fertilization of two transformants expressing cytosolic CSase or chloroplastic CSase. The F(1) transgenic plants were highly tolerant to toxic sulfur dioxide and sulfite. Upon fumigation with 0.1 microL L(-1) sulfur dioxide, the Cys and glutathione contents in leaves of F(1) plants were increased significantly, but not i

Effects of environmental pollutants on airways, allergic inflammation, and the immune response.

Particulate and gaseous air pollutants are capable of damaging the airway epithelial lining and of shifting the local immune balance, thereby facilitating the induction of persistent inflammation. Epidemiological studies are inconclusive regarding whether air pollution increases the incidence of asthma and chronic bronchitis in the population. Clearly, environmental pollution can, however, precipitate attacks and emergency-room admissions in those already suffering from such conditions. The catastrophic potential of airborne pollution was demonstrated in the 1960s and 1970s, when inverted atmo

Effects of Environmental Chemical Pollutants on Microbiome Diversity: Insights from Shotgun Metagenomics.

Chemical exposure in the environment can adversely affect the biodiversity of living organisms, particularly when persistent chemicals accumulate over time and disrupt the balance of microbial populations. In this study, we examined how chemical contaminants influence microorganisms in sediment and overlaying water samples collected from the Kinnickinnic, Milwaukee, and Menomonee Rivers near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. We characterized these samples using shotgun metagenomic sequencing to assess microbiome diversity and employed chemical analyses to quantify more than 200 compounds spanning 16

m6A methylation - a new target of metabolic diseases induced by environmental pollutants.

Exposure to environmental pollutants is closely associated with the development of obesity and related metabolic diseases. As the most prevalent form of eukaryotic chemical modification, N6-methyladenosine (m6A) methylation regulated by series enzymes plays an important role in the pathogenesis of metabolic diseases such as obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), atherosclerosis (AS), and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Therefore, investigating the specific mechanisms of m6A methylation in obesity and related metabolic diseases and its relationship with environmental pollutants is vital for

Epigenetic changes driven by environmental pollutants in lung carcinogenesis: a comprehensive review.

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related mortality globally, with environmental pollutants identified as significant risk factors, especially for nonsmokers. The intersection of these pollutants with epigenetic mechanisms has emerged as a critical area of interest for understanding the etiology and progression of lung cancer. Epigenetic changes, including DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNAs, can induce alterations in gene expression without affecting the DNA sequence and are influenced by environmental factors, contributing to the transformation of normal

Advances in immunology of male reproductive toxicity induced by common environmental pollutants.

Humans are exposed to an ever-increasing number of environmental toxicants, some of which have gradually been identified as major risk factors for male reproductive health, even associated with male infertility. Male infertility is usually due to the reproductive system damage, which may be influenced by the exposure to contaminants such as heavy metals, plasticizers, along with genetics and lifestyle. Testicular immune microenvironment (TIM) is important in maintaining normal physiological functions of the testis, whether disturbed TIM after exposure to environmental toxicants could induce re

Human skin responses to environmental pollutants: A review of current scientific models.

Whatever the exposure route, chemical, physical and biological pollutants modify the whole organism response, leading to nerve, cardiac, respiratory, reproductive, and skin system pathologies. Skin acts as a barrier for preventing pollutant modifications. This review aims to present the available scientific models, which help investigate the impact of pollution on the skin. The research question was "Which experimental models illustrate the impact of pollution on the skin in humans?" The review covered a period of 10 years following a PECO statement on in vitro, ex vivo, in vivo and in silico
