Genetic and environmental origins of hypospadias.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this study was to review and comment on recent original presentations dealing with genetic and environmental factors in the cause of hypospadias. RECENT FINDINGS: The heritability is definitely high and having an affected family member is the highest identified risk factor so far. Many candidate genes and polymorphisms have been suggested for hypospadias. Some associations with hypospadias were found, and many of these were replicated inconsistently as would be expected in a complex disorder affected by both genes and environment. The consistent association o

Environmental survival of Neisseria meningitidis.

Neisseria meningitidis is transmitted through the inhalation of large human respiratory droplets, but the risk from contaminated environmental surfaces is controversial. Compared to Streptococcus pneumoniae and Acinetobacter baumanni, meningococcal viability after desiccation on plastic, glass or metal surfaces decreased rapidly, but viable meningococci were present for up to 72 h. Encapsulation did not provide an advantage for meningococcal environmental survival on environmental surfaces.

Cutaneous responses to environmental stressors.

Living organisms are continuously exposed to environmental pollutants. Because of its critical location, the skin is a major interface between the body and the environment and provides a biological barrier against an array of chemical and physical environmental pollutants. The skin can be defined as our first defense against the environment because of its constant exposure to oxidants, including ultraviolet (UV) radiation and other environmental pollutants such as diesel fuel exhaust, cigarette smoke (CS), halogenated hydrocarbons, heavy metals, and ozone (O₃). The exposure to environmental pr

[Environmental Chlamydiae with medical significance].

The molecular biological analysis of a chlamydia-like bacterium from Acanthamoeba sp., originated from the nasal mucosa of a female subject, led to the description of the new species Parachlamydia acanthamoebae. It provided the basis for establishing its own family Parachlamydiaceae, which was genetically separated from the traditional Chlamydiaceae. In the following years other chlamydia-like bacteria, replicating within different free-living amoeba species, have been observed. Due to their close genetic distance to P. acanthamoebae, they have been classified as Parachlamydiaceae. Thus, the d

Environmental health disparities in housing.

The physical infrastructure and housing make human interaction possible and provide shelter. How well that infrastructure performs and which groups it serves have important implications for social equity and health. Populations in inadequate housing are more likely to have environmental diseases and injuries. Substantial disparities in housing have remained largely unchanged. Approximately 2.6 million (7.5%) non-Hispanic Blacks and 5.9 million Whites (2.8%) live in substandard housing. Segregation, lack of housing mobility, and homelessness are all associated with adverse health outcomes. Yet

Environmental pediatrics: an emerging issue.

OBJECTIVE: To review the most relevant articles regarding environmental pediatrics, its potential effects on health, and especially its advances in prevention. SOURCES: A literature search was conducted using MEDLINE/PubMed and SciELO databases. Articles from 1990 to 2010 were reviewed, in addition to book chapters related to environmental pediatrics. SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS: There is a significant variety of factors that make children highly vulnerable to environmental hazard exposure, which are mainly associated with children's comparatively greater consumption of water, food, and air in r

Environmental factors and testicular function.

Over the last decades there has been a dramatic increase in the incidence of some diseases associated with the male reproductive system, including poor semen quality, testicular cancer and congenital developmental abnormalities such as cryptorchidism and hypospadias, malformations of the urethra and scrotum respectively. Based on these observations one recurring theme is the concern that certain environmental chemicals and lifestyle related factors may play a role. Early fetal life is a particularly critical time period, when the endocrine system is established and organs are developing. Altho

Environmental triggers of multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system that develops in young adults with a complex genetic predisposition. Similar to other autoimmune disease, HLA-DR and -DQ alleles within the HLA class II region on chromosome 6p21 are by far the strongest risk-conferring genes. Less robust susceptibility effects have been reported for non-MHC related genetic variants. Improvements in the design of epidemiological studies helped to identify consistent environmental risk-associations such as the increased susceptibility for MS in individuals with a history of in

Environmental triggers of autoimmune thyroiditis.

Autoimmune thyroiditis is among the most prevalent of all the autoimmunities. Autoimmune thyroiditis is multifactorial with contributions from genetic and environmental factors. Much information has been published about the genetic predisposition to autoimmune thyroiditis both in experimental animals and humans. There is, in contrast, very little data on environmental agents that can serve as the trigger for autoimmunity in a genetically predisposed host. The best-established environmental factor is excess dietary iodine. Increased iodine consumption is strongly implicated as a trigger for thy

Is there evidence that environmental noise is immunotoxic?

Noise is a stressor. Noise-induced stress can lead to release of stress hormones. Acute stress whether physical or psychological is necessary for adaptation to change. However, chronic stress can lead to the persistent elevation of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical hormones, which are detrimental to health and can lead to disease states. It has also been suggested that there may be multiple interactions between the sympathetic and the complex feedback neuroendocrine systems, which interact with the immune system, in the genesis of the observed effects. Thus noise stress may be a factor con

Advanced materials for environmental catalysts.

Recent advances in the synthesis and characterization of materials for environmental catalysts are reported in this paper. Highly advanced environmental catalysts for decomposition of volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides were artificially designed based on a concept usually employed in the fields of solid-state chemistry and solid-state ionics. Catalytically active materials for complete ethylene oxidation were prepared by a citrate sol-gel method as a key process to obtain CeO(2)-ZrO(2)-Bi(2)O(3) solid solutions. On the other hand, direct NO decomposition catalysts were designed and

Environmental causes of esophageal cancer.

This article reviews the environmental risk factors and predisposing conditions for the two main histologic types of esophageal cancer. Tobacco smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, drinking maté, low intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, achalasia, and low socioeconomic status increase the risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Results of investigations on other potential risk factors, including opium consumption, intake of hot drinks, eating pickled vegetables, poor oral health, and exposure to human papillomavirus, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, N-nitroso compounds, acetaldehyde,

Systemic sclerosis: environmental factors.

Epidemiological evidence for the association between environmental and occupational risk factors and systemic sclerosis (SSc) has been extensively analyzed. Such exposures are frequently of long duration, and the inadequate classification of the type of exposure and other confounding variables may bias their estimated association with SSc. Environmental factors could be classified as occupational (silica, organic solvents), infectious (bacterial, viral), and non-occupational/non-infectious (drugs, pesticides, silicones). Understanding the link between environmental risk factors and the develop

Environmental epidemiology of essential tremor.

BACKGROUND: Essential tremor (ET) is one of the most common neurological disorders. Despite this, the disease mechanisms and etiology are not well understood. While susceptibility genotypes undoubtedly underlie many ET cases, no ET genes have been identified thus far. As with many other progressive, degenerative neurological disorders, it is likely that environmental factors contribute to the etiology of ET. Environmental epidemiology is the study in specific populations or communities of the effect on human health of physical, biologic and chemical factors in the external environment. The pur

Environmental contaminants and pregnancy outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To review selected environmental, occupational, and other important risk factors for the following adverse pregnancy outcomes: low birth weight (LBW), intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), and preterm delivery (PTD). DESIGN: The evidence is explored in greater detail for environmental tobacco smoke, drinking water disinfection byproducts, and organochlorine (DDT) and organophosphate pesticides, partly using a weight of evidence approach. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Low birth weight and IUGR are surrogate measures of fetal growth that are determined at delivery. Low birth weight is

Environmental issues in managing asthma.

Management of asthma requires attention to environmental exposures both indoors and outdoors. Americans spend most of their time indoors, where they have a greater ability to modify their environment. The indoor environment contains both pollutants (eg, particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, secondhand smoke, and ozone) and allergens from furred pets, dust mites, cockroaches, rodents, and molds. Indoor particulate matter consists of particles generated from indoor sources such as cooking and cleaning activities, and particles that penetrate from the outdoors. Nitrogen dioxide sources include ga

[Environmental factors and parkinsonian syndrome].

Particular emphasis has been in recent years placed on the study of an integrating role of medicine in the prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of diseases associated with the influence of environmental factors. Among nervous system diseases associated with the adverse influence of environmental factors, the parkinsonian syndrome has been the particular concern, which is due to its higher incidence rates and early disability in able-bodied persons. In this connection, the purpose of the study was to review the data available in the literature on the neurotoxicity of heavy metals and othe

[Environmental factors in Asperger syndrome].

This paper reviews what is currently known about the environmental factors in Asperger syndrome that is a neurodevelopmental disorder of genetic origins. Its characteristics tend to occur in families of those with the syndrome. The rate of complications during pregnancy or the neonatal period in the patients with Asperger syndrome was about the same as that in the control group. It is true that their involvement in their outer world could not influence the core social deficits very much. But it might facilitate the appearance of the second symptoms such as dissociation, anxiety, depression, pe

Environmental determinants of Parkinson's disease.

Increasing toxicologic and epidemiologic evidence suggests that pesticides and other environmental exposures are associated with idiopathic Parkinson's disease. Using a case-control study, the authors examined the impact of farming, pesticide use, rural residence, and well water use (including critical periods of childhood exposure) on the risk of Parkinson's disease. After adjustment for confounding, > or = 40 years of well-water exposure (compared to no well water use) was associated with an increased risk of Parkinson's disease (OR = 7.1; 95% CI: 2.3-22.1). The authors found an increased ri
