Gastric cancer: epidemiology and risk factors.

Gastric cancer is one of the major malignancies in the world. This article summarizes the current understanding of the worldwide burden of this disease, its geographic variation, and temporal trends. An overview is presented of known risk factors, including genetic, dietary, and behavioral, but focuses on Helicobacter pylori infection as the most important factor in noncardia gastric cancer. When the data and the literature allow, we distinguish between cardia and noncardia sub-sites, as it is now clear that these two anatomic locations present distinct and sometimes opposite epidemiological c

Epidemiology and risk factors for oesophageal adenocarcinoma.

Oesophageal adenocarcinoma will soon cease to be a rare form of cancer for people born after 1940. In many Western countries, its incidence has increased more rapidly than other digestive cancers. Incidence started increasing in the Seventies in England and USA, 15 years later in Western Europe and Australia. The cumulative risk between the ages of 15 and 74 is particularly striking in the UK, with a tenfold increase in men and fivefold increase in women in little more than a single generation. Prognosis is poor with a 5-year relative survival rate of less than 10%. The main known risk factors

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis: epidemiology and risk factors.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiology and risk factors associated with extra-pulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB). METHOD: Cases of tuberculosis (TB) diagnosed from 1991 to 2008 in a Caucasian population were classified as EPTB or pulmonary TB (PTB). Of all cases, 63.7% were followed up in a specialist TB unit. A standardised protocol for data collection was used, including: gender, age, BCG vaccination, contact with PTB patient, smoking habit, alcohol abuse, diabetes mellitus, immunosuppressive drugs/steroids and HIV-status. These variables were compared between EPTB and PTB groups. Statistical a

Cholangiocarcinoma: descriptive epidemiology and risk factors.

In theory, the term of cholangiocarcinoma is reserved for the tumours originating from the intrahepatic bile ducts. The problems of classification of the most frequent hilar tumours and the absence of histopathological confirmation in a large percentage of cases in cancer registries from many countries show the difficulty of establishing the specific epidemiologic behaviour of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). There are clearly two types of ICC: the first one is the consequence of the recurrent infection of the biliary ducts by the parasites Opisthorchis viverrini and Clonorchis sinensis,

Epidemiology of holoprosencephaly: Prevalence and risk factors.

The wide variation in cerebral and facial phenotypes and the recognized etiologic heterogeneity of holoprosencephaly (HPE) contribute to the observed inter-study heterogeneity. High lethality during the early stages of embryonic and fetal development makes HPE detection age dependent. By reviewing 21 HPE epidemiologic articles, the observed prevalence rate differences can be largely explained by the pregnancy outcome status of the studied cohort: livebirth, stillbirth, and terminations of pregnancy (TOPs): lower than 1 per 10,000 when live and still births were included, higher when TOPs were

[Epidemiology and risk factors for microtia in Colombia].

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Microtia is a major malformation of the auricle, comprising a clinical spectrum ranging from a slight reduction in the size of the auricle or one of its parts to the complete absence of the pinna (anotia). Its prevalence varies according to the region of the world it is evaluated in. We analyzed a range of maternal, neonatal, and familial variables in a case group and a control group, and compared them with the existing literature. METHODS: We collected information from the Latin-American Collaborative Study on Congenital Malformations (ECLAMC) gathered between 20

Epidemiology and risk factors for venous thrombosis.

Venous thrombosis, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), occurs at an annual incidence of about 1 per 1,000 adults. Rates increase sharply after about age 45 years, and are slightly higher in men than women in older age. Major risk factors for thrombosis, other than age, include exogenous factors such as surgery, hospitalization, immobility, trauma, pregnancy, and the puerperium and hormone use, and endogenous factors such as cancer, obesity, and inherited and acquired disorders of hypercoagulation. This review focuses on epidemiology of venous thrombosis and the ge

Epidemiology and risk factors of venous thromboembolism.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common disorder that can affect apparently healthy as well as hospitalized patients. The actual incidence and prevalence of this disease are difficult to estimate because of its often silent nature. The clinical relevance of VTE is highlighted by the important rates of recurrence and mortality. The individual risk of VTE varies as a result of a complex interaction between congenital and transient or permanent acquired risk factors. Risk factors can be either intrinsic (e.g., age, obesity, history of VTE, or thrombophilia) or disease related (e.g., surgical pro

[Keratoconus: epidemiology, risk factors and diagnosis].

Keratoconus is a bilateral, non-inflammatory and progredient corneal ectasia with an incidence of approximately 1 per 2,000 in the general population. Within the second decade of life the cornea develops a conical shape, due to thinning of the corneal stroma with subsequent irregular astigmatism and myopia leading to marked impairment of vision. The most common presentation of the keratoconus is as a sporadic disorder, but it has long been recognized that a significant minority of patients exhibit a family history as an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance. Most investigators suggest complet

[Epidemiology and risk factors of Alzheimer's disease].

Alzheimer's disease or dementia of the Alzheimer's type (AD/DAT) is one of the most common dementia conditions and it amounts to over 40-90% of dementia cases among elderly and old patients. Epidemiological studies in this area make a great contribution to the study of the etiology and risk factors of AD/DAT). The collaborative reanalysis of AD/DAT prevalence and incidence in EEC countries ("EURODERM" programme) shows that the overall European age-specific prevalence of AD does not differ greatly. There was an exponential increase in age-specific AD/DAT prevalence was found with age, as eviden

Epidemiological factors in clinical trial design.

Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials are human experiments in which the process of randomisation and blinded observation greatly simplify the interpretation of the results. However, epidemiological issues when properly addressed allow the optimal preparation of the study with anticipation of factors to be included in the analysis which are independent of the randomisation process but can affect the results, for example, the effect of age, dose, time since vaccination and exposure to other diseases. Alternative methods of estimating vaccine efficacy may be necessary in s

[Epidemiology and risk factors of gastroduodenal ulcer].

Today, the lifetime prevalence of peptic ulcer disease is in industrialized countries approximately 5 to 10%. There has been a substantial decline in peptic ulcer incidence and mortality over the last forty years. The two principal, independent risk factors of gastric and duodenal ulcer disease are a preexisting Helicobacter pylori infection and the regular intake of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). Several characteristics of H. pylori infection which contribute to the final event of ulceration have been identified. Bacterial virulence factors and the severity of gastritis seem to

Epidemiology and environmental factors in urologic cancer.

Urologic cancers include malignancies of the genital and the urinary organs of men, and the urinary organs of women. For men in the United States, urologic cancers account for about 25% of all new cases of cancer and about 15% of cancer deaths. For women, cancers of the urinary organs account for 4% of all new cases of cancer and 3% of cancer deaths. Of urologic cancers, bladder cancer has been the most intensively studied epidemiologically. Cigarette smoking is the most important known preventable cause of the disease. Occupational exposures continue to come under suspicion. It appears that n

Risk-factor studies as an epidemiologic tool.

Anecdotal and historical data strongly suggest that environmental factors and hygienic practices play a major role in chlamydial transmission and the maintenance of endemic blinding trachoma. They also suggest that relatively minor alterations in these practices can have a profound impact, virtually eliminating trachoma as a blinding disease. This is especially critical, since few countries can now afford extensive, ongoing chemoprophylaxis programs. Epidemiologic studies are now needed to identify the critical risk factors in each affected culture. A recent study that used this approach found

Dietary factors in the epidemiology of cancer of the larynx.

Interviews were carried out with 374 male patients at Roswell Park Memorial Institute with cancer of the larynx and 381 controls with diseases other than of the digestive or respiratory system and other than neoplasms. As have other investigators, the authors found a high risk associated with smoking as well as a risk associated with alcohol ingestion. In addition, the study found that males ingesting low amounts of vitamin A in their diet had approximately twice the risk of those ingesting large amounts. The same was true for vitamin C. All of these relationships were significant, and risk in

[Role of the aqueous factor in the epidemiology of dysentery].

Analysis of the dynamics and territorial distribution of bacterial dysentery morbidity during 1959-1973 in the Dagestan ASSR demonstrated that the epidemically unfavourable conditions were largely connected with the use of water in open water bodies for domestic purposes and swimming as well as a wide network of irrigation canals. Persistence of the water factor in the dysentery epidemiology was connected with the ever increasing contamination of water in open water bodies and neglect of sanitary-hygienic requirements of the water supply to population of pertinent and sanitary laws.
