[Legionnaires' disease--12 years later].

A survey of development of our knowledge about Legionnaires' disease since its detection to the first epidemics in Yugoslavia, is given. The etiology, pathogenesis, epidemiology, clinic and therapy of legionellosis are summarized. It is pointed out that the detection of Legionnaires' disease and successful fight against legionella infections require a close cooperation of clinicians, microbiologists, epidemiologists and corresponding technical experts. Their active attitude toward this disease is the basis of its prevention.

The role of epidemiology in informing United States childhood immunization policy and practice.

One of the ten greatest public health achievements is childhood vaccination because of its impact on controlling and eliminating vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs). Evidence-based immunization policies and practices are responsible for this success and are supported by epidemiology that has generated scientific evidence for informing policy and practice. The purpose of this report is to highlight the role of epidemiology in the development of immunization policy and successful intervention in public health practice that has resulted in a measurable public health impact: the control and elimin

The epidemiological information system of the French national electricity and gas company: the SI-EPI project.

SI-EPI is epidemiological information system set up in 1978 in the national electricity and gas company, Electricité de France-Gaz de France (EDF-GDF). The worker population comprises about 150,000 individuals, involved in production, transmission and distribution of energy. SI-EPI was developed by the epidemiologists of the Occupational Health Department (180 physicians), and of the Sécurité Sociale Department (120 physicians). Several data bases constitute SI-EPI. The population data base contains demographic, socioeconomic and professional data about each worker. The health data base is an

Outbreak of Anthrax in Livestock with Human Occupational Exposures - Minnesota, 2023.

In July 2023, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) was notified of possible occupational exposures to anthrax during an outbreak in animals. In consultation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, MDH epidemiologists created a questionnaire that assessed exposure risks and helped determine individual illness monitoring and antibiotic post-exposure prophylaxis needs. This investigation and the resources developed for it could be useful in future scenarios where there are occupational exposures to naturally occurring anthrax.

Epidemiologic highlights of the past with a look towards the future.

Since the first meeting of the American Public Health Association in 1873, epidemiology and epidemiologists have been central to the activities of the organization. At that meeting, the most prominent American physician of the time, Austin Flint, presented a classic paper entitled "Relations of Water to the Propagation of Fever." In that remarkable paper, Flint reinterpreted observations on the North Boston, N.Y. typhoid fever epidemic made 30 years earlier in which he had correctly concluded that the epidemic had been propagated by contagion, but incorrectly concluded that transmission was no

Infection control and prevention strategies in the ICU.

Although only 5-10% of all hospitalized patients are treated in ICUs, they account for approximately 25% of all nosocomial infections, and the incidence of nosocomial infections in ICUs is 5-10 times higher than that observed in general hospital wards. Systemic and respiratory infections are far more common than in general wards, and most epidemics originate in ICUs. Nosocomial infections are the primary focus of most infection control programmes because they are the cause of high mortality rates in ICUs. Effective programmes are usually based on the cooperation of the intensive care physician

How study of geographic epidemiology of disease can help in detection of adverse drug reactions.

The geographic epidemiology of adverse drug reactions can often help in their recognition and in pinpointing the responsible drug. Since different countries often introduce new drugs at varying periods of time and they achieve varying degrees of popularity and use, this information may sometimes aid the epidemiologist in the search for the etiology of unwanted drug effects. Some examples where geography helped unravel the story behind certain adverse drug reactions are presented.

CE: Responding to the cholera epidemic in Haiti.

While Haiti was still recovering from the January 12, 2010, magnitude-7 earthquake, an outbreak of cholera spread throughout the nation, soon reaching epidemic proportions. Working through the faith-based nongovernmental organization Samaritan's Purse, an NP, an epidemiologist, and a physician joined the effort to prevent the spread of disease and treat those affected. Here they describe the prevention and intervention campaigns their organization initiated, how they prepared for each, and the essential elements of their operations.

Ebola active monitoring system for travelers returning from West Africa—Georgia, 2014-2015.

The Ebola virus disease (Ebola) epidemic in West Africa has so far produced approximately 25,000 cases, more than 40 times the number in any previously documented Ebola outbreak. Because of the risk for imported disease from infected travelers, in October 2014 CDC recommended that all travelers to the United States from Ebola-affected countries receive enhanced entry screening and postarrival active monitoring for Ebola signs or symptoms until 21 days after their departure from an Ebola-affected country. The state of Georgia began its active monitoring program on October 25, 2014. The Georgia

Does occupational exposure to dust prevent colorectal cancer?

OBJECTIVES: To explore the impression that occupational epidemiologists tend to focus on associations suggestive of increased risk and tend to ignore those associations in which risk is not increased. To examine the risk of colorectal cancer in cohorts exposed to dust, cohorts in which it has been suggested that occupational exposure is a cause of increased risk of stomach cancer. METHODS: A review of the publications in the English language on mortality among hard rock miners, granite, and quarry workers identified from a MEDLINE search and the index of the library of the Ontario Ministry of

Choosing Words to Limit Stigma: The Use of Person-First Language in Birth Defects Research.

BACKGROUND: Birth defects are associated with psychosocial stress and stigma, in addition to increased mortality and lifelong disabilities. The language and phrasing used to describe individuals with birth defects in scientific writing can affect attitudes that contribute to stigma. Using a "person-first" writing structure (e.g., "infants with Down syndrome") instead of "identity-first" language (e.g., "Down syndrome infants") is intended to promote respect and inclusivity. Our work aims to enhance awareness and advocacy of person-first language among researchers and professionals in birth def

[Comparative characteristics of transmissive fevers in the territory of Astrakhan region (clinicoepidemiological evidence)].

Epidemiologists register a trend in the latest decades for expansion of the areas of natural-focal transmissive fevers morbidity in the Astrakhan region. This is explained by reconfiguration of natural landscapes as a result of increasing anthropogenic impact. The Astrakhan territory exclusively contains 4 types of landscape with evolutionally formed several natural foci of transmissive fevers: Crimean hemorrhagic fever, West Nile fever, Astrakhan rickettsial fever, Q-fever. Early diagnosis of these diseases determines further treatment, prophylactic policy in the infection focus.

Epidemiology and the law: courts and confidence intervals.

Beginning with the swine flu litigation of the early 1980s, epidemiological evidence has played an increasingly prominent role in helping the nation's courts deal with alleged causal connections between plaintiffs' diseases or other harm and exposure to specific noxious agents (such as asbestos, toxic waste, radiation, and pharmaceuticals). Judicial reliance on epidemiology has high-lighted the contrast between the nature of scientific proof and of legal proof. Epidemiologists need to recognize and understand the growing involvement of their profession in complex tort litigation.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency: a historical perspective.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency serves as a prototype of the many human enzyme deficiencies that are now known. Since its discovery more than 50 years ago, the high prevalence of the defect and the easy accessibility of the cells that manifest it have made it a favorite tool of biochemists, epidemiologists, geneticists, and molecular biologists as well as clinicians. In this brief historical review, we trace the discovery of this defect, its clinical manifestations, detection, population genetics, and molecular biology.

Assessment of cellular telephone and other radio frequency exposure for epidemiologic research.

Epidemiologists are now embarking on the evaluation of the hypothesis that exposure to radio frequency energy from low-power wireless communication devices, such as portable cellular telephones, causes brain cancer and other adverse health outcomes. Even in the laboratory, exposures from radio frequency sources are difficult to quantify; their measurement in large populations for epidemiologic study is challenging. In this paper, we outline the nature and magnitude of these exposures and discuss the prospects for obtaining useful measures of exposure for epidemiologic research.

Ethnohistory and the Dead: Cultures of Colonial Epidemiology.

What were the dead to colonial epidemiologists? Doctors and colonial scientists involved in the response to epidemics of plague in Madagascar in the first half of the twentieth century speculated about the role of Malagasy mortuary ritual in the spread of plague, and sought to bring Malagasy ritual into line with Pasteurian hygienic norms. I examine confrontations over death and the management of the dead in Madagascar, tracing the textured form of epidemiological knowledge that arose from the confrontation between Malagasy cosmology and Pasteurian counter epidemic technique.

[Epidemiological studies on the poliomyelitis in Spain before the vaccination].

The eradication of polio in Spain is one of the most important health milestones of the twentieth century, not only for public health but also for the effect it had on scientific knowledge in our country, in the medical field. Knowledge of international literature by our epidemiologists and virologists, was important, as reflected in the studies of outbreaks, virological studies and clinical studies. For public health represented, throughout the twentieth century, an effort geared to make decisions based on scientific knowledge. For epidemiology represented the application of new ways of worki

Epidemiological evidence on Balkan nephropathy as a viral disease.

Balkan nephropathy is a chronic kidney disease of a completely unknown etiology. Most epidemiologists believe that the disease has been caused by viruses, though all attempts to prove such a relationship have been fruitless. A common feature of most of the clues offered for elucidating the role of the viruses, is that they interfere with the epidemiological evidence on BN. Therefore, a hypothesis is put forward that the disease has been caused by slow viruses transmitted by rodents which contaminate food and articles in the house. Such an explanation fits most of the existing epidemiological d

Trigeminal neuralgia: opportunities for research and treatment.

Trigeminal neuralgia was the focus of a recent workshop convened by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). The workshop brought together basic scientists, clinicians, epidemiologists, and patient advocates. New research directions for epidemiology, diagnosis and assessment, pain mechanisms, and treatment were identified. (The workshop was held in Rockville MD on September 14, 1999, with financial support from NINDS, NIDCR, the NIH Office of Rare Diseases, and the NIH Pain Research Consortium.)
