Heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF) activates p38 to affect pulmonary fibrosis.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine whether heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF) affects the lung fibrosis process through the activation of p38 protein in mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) signaling pathway, as well as the expression of downstream inflammatory factors. METHODS: The expression levels of HB-EGF, collagen type I (COL-I), and hexokinase 2 (HK2) in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of patients with connective tissue disease-related interstitial lung disease (CTD-ILD) were examined by qPCR, Western blotting and ELISA. RESULTS: In vitro ex

Heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor improves erectile function in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice.

BACKGROUND: Heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF) serves as a pro-angiogenic factor; however, there is to our knowledge currently no reported research on the relationship between HB-EGF and diabetic erectile dysfunction (ED). AIM: In this study we aimed to determine whether HB-EGF can improve the erectile function of streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice and to explore the related mechanisms. METHODS: Eight-week-old male C57BL/6 mice were used for diabetes induction. Diabetes mellitus (DM) was induced by low-dose injections of streptozotocin (50 mg/kg) for 5 cons

Healing large tympanic membrane perforations using hyaluronic acid, basic fibroblast growth factor, and epidermal growth factor.

Large tympanic membrane perforations usually require a surgical tympanoplasty for closure. Reducing surgical costs and risks has encouraged investigators to examine nonsurgical office procedures for healing these perforations. Growth accelerators are the most promising agents. We study here the closure of large acute perforations using weekly applications of 1 mg of 1% hyaluronic acid (HA), 0.4 microg basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), or 1.0 microg epidermal growth factor (EGF) directly to the tympanic membranes of the experimental ears. Control ears were treated with 0. 1 mL Vasocidin. C

Expression of epidermal growth factor, transforming growth factor-alpha and their receptor in the human oesophagus.

Increasing evidence indicates that epidermal growth factor and transforming growth factor-alpha are involved in the maintenance of oesophageal mucosal integrity. However, their cellular origin and the exact localization of their receptor in the oesophagus are still unclear. Therefore, we examined the expression of the two growth factors and their shared receptor in the normal human oesophagus at both mRNA and protein level, by immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. In addition to being expressed in the proliferative compartment of the o

Expression of epidermal growth factor and transforming growth factor alpha during ulcer healing. Time sequence study.

BACKGROUND: Growth factors such as epidermal growth factor (EGF) and transforming growth factor alpha (TGF alpha) have been shown to share common receptor (EGFR) and to accelerate ulcer healing due to stimulation of cell proliferation, but the time sequence of expression of EGF and TGF alpha during ulcer healing has not been investigated. In this study the rate of cell proliferation and the gastric secretion and gene expression of mRNA for EGF and TGF alpha were determined during ulcer healing. METHODS: Gastric ulcers were induced in 150 Wistar rats by serosal application of 100% acetic acid

Inhibition of epidermal growth factor-like growth factor secretion in tracheobronchial epithelial cells by vitamin A.

Vitamin A deficiency of respiratory tract epithelium results in the phenomenon of squamous cell metaplasia. The mechanisms by which vitamin A regulates airway epithelial cell growth and differentiation are not completely understood. In this study, we focused on the effects of vitamin A (retinol) on growth of human and non-human primate tracheobronchial epithelial (TBE) cells in culture. Retinol and its derivatives have little growth-stimulatory effect on TBE cells that are maintained in primary culture in a serum-free medium supplemented with 6 hormonal supplements: insulin, transferrin, epide

The induction of ornithine decarboxylase by nerve growth factor and epidermal growth factor in PC12 cells.

Both nerve growth factor and epidermal growth factor cause an induction of ornithine decarboxylase in the rat pheochromocytoma clone PC12. The induction by nerve growth factor is transcription-dependent and occurs within 4 to 6 h. Antibody studies indicate that nerve growth factor must be present for 2-3 h to obtain full induction. Nerve growth factor is synergistic with either N6, O2-dibutyryl cyclic 3',5'-adenosine monophosphate (dBcAMP) or 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX) in the induction. The magnitude of ornithine decarboxylase induction is influenced by the density of the culture. Sync

Anti-epidermal growth factor receptor targeted therapy-associated ulcerations.

The well-studied role of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has enabled the development of drugs that target this molecule, including panitumumab for the former and osimertinib for the latter. Oral adverse events due to those agents are rarely described in the literature and their exact characterization is hampered by inadequate reporting and/or incorrect terminology used. We report two cases of panitumumab- and osimertinib-associated oral ulcerations with emphasis on their possible pathogenesis and optimal mana

Epidermal Growth Factor Is Increased in Conjunctival Malignant Melanoma.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Conjunctival malignant melanoma (CMM) is a rare, but very aggressive tumor with a high metastasis rate. Not much is known about the CMM metastasis mechanisms. So far, epidermal growth factor (EGF) and its receptor (EGF-R) as well as macrophages and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) have been reported to lead to metastasis by epithelial-mesenchymal-transition and tumor migration in different solid tumors. Therefore, we evaluated whether EGF and EGF-R, CD68 and MMP-9 are altered in CMM samples in comparison to conjunctival nevi and healthy conjunctiva. PATIENTS AND METHODS: EGF

The epidermal growth factor receptor axis and kidney fibrosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this study was to summarize recent findings about the role of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in acute kidney injury and in progression of chronic kidney injury. RECENT FINDINGS: There is increasing evidence that EGFR activation occurs as a response to either ischemic or toxic kidney injury and EGFR signalling plays an important role in recovery of epithelial integrity. However, with incomplete recovery or in conditions predisposing to progressive glomerular and tubulointerstitial injury, aberrant persistent EGFR signalling is a causal mediator of pro

Epidermal growth factor receptor in odontogenic cysts and tumors.

The expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) was investigated in 67 cases of odontogenic cysts and 35 cases of odontogenic tumors using monoclonal antibody to EGFR (Biomarker, Israel) to determine the presence and significance of this transmembrane growth factor receptor. The cystic epithelial cells of odontogenic cystic lesions (keratocyst 60%; primordial cyst 75%; radicular cyst 35%; and follicular cyst 47.4%) were positive to EGFR staining. Cytochemical characterization of EGFR in those cystic epithelium was cell membrane positive type as in the normal epithelium. No expression

The epidermal growth factor receptor in human pancreatic cancer.

The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and its ligands are thought to be important in the control of proliferation of many epithelial systems, including the exocrine pancreas. Abnormalities in expression of two of the known ligands of the EGFR, transforming growth factor alpha and epidermal growth factor, occur frequently in ductal adenocarcinoma of the human pancreas. We have examined an archival series of cases of pancreatic pathology for expression of the EGFR using the anti-EGFR antiserum 12E and found that there is almost ubiquitous overexpression of EGFR in pancreatic cancer and in

Epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) in human ovarian cancer.

Epidermal growth factor receptor can be used as a biological marker in tumours. We examined 199 samples from 150 patients with ovarian cancer first by using a single point screen, then by full Scatchard analysis, over a concentration range between 0.086-16.6 nM. Taking as positive those samples which showed a 20% difference between total binding and non specific binding, the EGFR was present in 39.7% of samples ranging from 36.4% in those tumours which were classified as being mucinous to 47.7% in the undifferentiated group. Thirty-six samples had a low affinity component (Kd greater than 1 nM

Epidermal growth factor levels in human breast cyst fluid.

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) seems to modulate the in vitro and in vivo growth of normal and neoplastic breast cells. We determined, by a radio-receptor assay, EGF levels in cyst fluid and in plasma of patients with gross cystic disease of the breast. The mean levels of EGF were lower in plasma than in breast cyst fluid (BCF) (p less than 0.001). In BCF of apocrine cysts we found higher EGF levels than in flattened cysts (p less than 0.001). The EGF content of apocrine BCF seems to be under sex steroid hormone control, being higher in reproductive age than in post menopause (p less than 0.05)
