Malignant variant of sclerosing perivascular epithelioid cell tumor arising in the adnexa.

The perivascular epithelioid cell family of tumors (PEComas) includes angiomyolipoma, lymphangioleiomyomatosis, clear-cell "sugar" tumor of the lung and a variety of extrapulmonary epithelioid and spindle-cell tumors referred to by various names. PEComas are now widely recognized histologically, and have been reported to occur at most anatomical sites, including the female genital tract. However, a distinctive variant of PEComa, designated "sclerosing PEComa," has only recently been described in the literature. All 13 of the cases of sclerosing PEComa reported thus far have been in women (mean

Ectopic hyperprolactinaemia in a woman with a mesocolic perivascular epithelioid cell tumor ("PEComa").

Ectopic prolactin secretion remains exceptional and originates mainly from malignant tumors. We report the case of a 47-year-old woman who presented amenorrhea leading to unravel important hyperprolactinaemia (269 ng/mL) with no hypothalamo-pituitary mass on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Pelvic imaging revealed the presence of a large pelvic mass that originated from the mesocolon. After complete surgical extraction, histological examination was in favour of a "perivascular epithelioid cell tumor" (PEComa). Prolactin levels normalized after surgical extraction and remained normal after a 3

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumour of the vagina in an 8 year old girl.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a rare mesenchymal tumor with an unpredictable natural history. We present the first reported case of PEComa of the vagina diagnosed in an 8-year-old girl. This was initially diagnosed on biopsy as an embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, and the patient underwent 3 cycles of chemotherapy according to the Mesenchymal Malignant Tumour 1989 protocol. A repeat scan, however, revealed an increase in tumor size. Total resection was achieved via a transvaginal (vertical sleeve) partial vaginectomy. The resected tumor had the typical appearance of a PEComa. Immun

Malignant perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) arising in the broad ligament.

Malignant perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is an extremely rare mesenchymal neoplasm mostly composed of HMB-45-positive epithelioid cells with clear-to-eosinophilic cytoplasm, a propensity for perivascular distribution and a coexpression of smooth muscle markers. The uterus seems to be one of the most prevalent sites of involvement, although only 14 cases of uterine PEComa have been described. We report the case of a 51-year-old woman with a PEComa arising in the broad ligament. She was treated with total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, omentectomy, and pel

The clear cell variant of epithelioid intravenous leiomyomatosis of the uterus: report of a case.

A case of very rare uterine clear cell epithelioid leiomyomatosis is reported. The patient presented with a recurrent pelvic mass after hysterectomy 2 years earlier. The recurrent tumor was located mainly in the vessels of the broad ligament as worm-like plugs. The reviewed hysterectomy specimen showed a typical multi-lobulated intramural mass together with worm-like plugs within the myometrial vessels. Computer tomography exhibited metastatic nodules in both lungs. According to an histological examination, all the tumor cells were of epithelioid type and contained abundant clear cytoplasm. Ch

Distribution of epithelioid cells in the wall of the chicken aorta and their functional role as chemoreceptors.

BACKGROUND: The ultrastructural characteristics of epithelioid cells in the wall of the chicken aorta have been studied by several investigators. Their characteristics were homologous to those of carotid body type I cells and are considered to be one of the peripheral chemoreceptors. However, there are few descriptions about their location, distribution, and how they react to chemical signals, nor have there been many reports about the localization of bioactive substances in the epithelioid cells. Therefore we designed this investigation to address these problems. METHODS: Wholemount immunohi

Ultrastructural study of macromelanosomes in a unique case of spindle and epithelioid cell nevus.

Macromelanosomes in a spindle and epithelioid cell nevus, which occurred in the electron beam-damaged skin of a woman with mycosis fungoides, were ultrastructurally investigated. The melanosomes in the spindle and epithelioid cells were varied in size but uniformly spherical in shape and composed of a core and cortex structure. Electron-lucent bodies were observed in the small melanosomes as well as in the macromelanosomes. Positive dopa-oxidase reaction was revealed on the cortex of these melanosomes and partly on their electron-lucent bodies. The electron-lucent bodies were not vesicular str

Perioral dermatitis with epithelioid cell granulomas in a woman: a possible new etiology.

Perioral dermatitis, a distinctive clinical entity yet of obscure etiology, is not uncommonly seen among Saudi middle-aged females. A case of a 30-year-old woman with a perioral lupoid micropapular erythematous eruption is described. Histopathological examination showed evidence of granulomatous sarcoidal reaction similar to that described by Gianotti et al. (3), Gianotti (2), and Georgouras & Kocsard (1). Synthetic acrylic fibre meshes widely used by Arabian women to cover their faces, are considered in the etiology of this eruption.

[Misdiagnosis of a giant hepatic perivascular epithelioid cell tumor: A case report].

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm, and giant (maximum diameter is ≥10 cm) hepatic PEComa is even more uncommon. We report a case of giant hepatic PEComa that was preoperatively misdiagnosed as fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma. The patient was a middle-aged woman who presented with upper abdominal discomfort and was admitted to Xiangya Hospital of Central South University on August 21, 2025, for evaluation of a hepatic space-occupying lesion. She had no history of chronic liver disease, and relevant laboratory tests showed no significant abnormali

Perivascular Epithelioid Cell Tumors: Pathogenesis, Clinical Features, and Radiologic Challenges.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are an uncommon group of mesenchymal neoplasms characterized by perivascular epithelioid cells that exhibit dual myomelanocytic differentiation. Due to their lack of a site-specific cell of origin, they may arise in a wide variety of anatomic locations. Although most cases are caused by sporadic mutations of TSC1, TSC2, or TFE3 genes, a subset are caused by germline mutations in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex. These genetic alterations lead to uncontrolled cell growth through overactivation of mammalian target of rapamycin, which is a cr

Perivascular Epithelioid Cell Tumor (PEComa): A Rare Type of Liver Cancer.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) is a rare liver tumor, with few cases reported in the literature. Clinical decisions regarding patients diagnosed with PEComa are based on studies with small sample sizes. Differential diagnosis between PEComa and other types of liver lesions is challenging due to non-specific radiological findings associated with this type of liver mass. We report the case of a 51-year-old female patient followed at the outpatient hepatology clinic of Patras, General University Hospital, Greece, for chronic hepatitis B. The patient was asymptomatic, with positive h

Primary Hepatic Perivascular Epithelioid Cell Tumors: From Diagnosis to Treatment.

Primary hepatic perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that involve both melanocytic and smooth muscle differentiation. Primary hepatic PEComas remain a challenging condition for radiologists, pathologists, and surgeons. Our review provides an updated, clinically oriented synthesis of the available evidence on primary hepatic PEComas, integrating recent developments in diagnosis, imaging, histopathology, molecular biology, prognostic stratification, surgical and systemic treatment, and long-term surveillance. Although the majority of hepatic PEComas gener

Perivascular Epithelioid Cell Tumor of the Lung With a Novel YAP1::TFE3 Fusion.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) belongs to a family of rare mesenchymal neoplasms that share characteristic morphologic, immunohistochemical and molecular findings. In this report, we provide a detailed clinicopathological characterization of a PEComa incidentally discovered in the right lung of a 53-year-old woman. This tumor with epithelioid cell morphology and myomelanocytic differentiation demonstrated a TFE3::YAP1 fusion by targeted RNA sequencing. While a subset of PEComas shows TFE3 rearrangements, fusion with YAP1 has not been systematically documented in this entity. Clea

First Report of the Coexistence of Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis and Epithelioid Hemangioma of the Larynx.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a complex disorder of the mononuclear phagocyte system. Laryngeal epithelioid hemangiomas are rare, benign vascular tumors in adults. Here, we report the first known case of the coexistence of LCH and epithelioid hemangioma in the larynx. A 42-year-old man presented with progressive swelling on the left side of the neck and hoarseness. Endoscopic examination revealed a mass obliterating the left pyriform sinus, false vocal cord, and aryepiglottic fold. Computed tomography (CT) showed a mass destroying the thyroid cartilage, extending to the left false and

Epithelioid and clear-cell variant of Kaposi sarcoma: A rare histopathologic subtype.

Kaposi sarcoma is a malignant vascular tumor consisting of multiple clinical subtypes and varying histopathologic patterns. We report a case of a 53-year-old African-American male with HIV/AIDS who presented multiple times with skin nodules, pain, and edema in his lower extremities, secondary to recurrent Kaposi sarcoma. The patient was treated with two courses of liposomal doxorubicin with improvement, but his symptoms recurred a third time. A biopsy specimen of one of the nodules showed prominent neoplastic cells of epithelioid morphology, some with clear-cell change, appearing to form rudim

A rare case of perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) of the greater omentum.

BACKGROUND: A tumor composed exclusively or predominantly of human melanin black 45 (HMB45)-positive epithelioid cells is called a perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa). We report a very rare case of a PEComa of the greater omentum. CASE PRESENTATION: MRI conducted to examine the orthopedic disease of the patients, a 49-year-old Japanese woman, also identified a tumor in her pelvis. A CT scan revealed a tumor mass on the right side of the pelvic floor and clear nutrient vessels originating from the splenic and celiac arteries. An omental primary tumor or accessory spleen was thus suspe

Pancreatic perivascular epithelioid cell tumour presenting with upper gastrointestinal bleeding.

PEComa is a family of rare mesenchymal tumours which can occur in any part of the human body. Primary PEComas of the pancreas are extremely rare tumours with uncertain malignant potential. A 17-year-old female was admitted to the hospital due to melena. She required several transfusions. CT scan demonstrated a mass at the head of the pancreas measuring 4.2 cm in maximum diameter. An endoscopic ultrasound showed an ulcerating malignant looking mass infiltrating 50% of the wall of the second part of the duodenum in the region of the ampulla. Multiple biopsies taken showed extensive ulceration wi
