Deletions of pfhrp2 and paralogue pfhrp3 (pfhrp2/3) genes threaten Plasmodium falciparum diagnosis by rapid diagnostic test. We examined 1,002 samples from suspected malaria patients in Djibouti City, Djibouti, to investigate pfhrp2/3 deletions. We performed assays for Plasmodium antigen carriage, pfhrp2/3 genotyping, and sequencing for 7 neutral microsatellites to assess relatedness. We report a case of Takayasu's disease with severe renovascular hypertension in a girl from Eritrea. In the "burn-out" phase after the erythrocyte sedimentation rate had normalized, reconstructive vascular surgery was performed as further progression of the disease seemed unlikely. However, probably due to her growth, the graft rotated and a second operation was successfully performed.

A 30-year-old man from Eritrea was admitted with a pulmonary bacterial abscess. Unexpectedly, histopathology of the resected lobe also revealed an infection with Schistosoma mansoni with surrounding granulomatous tissue and fibrosis. Patients from endemic areas are often asymptomatic with blood eosinophilia being the only diagnostic clue. Early recognition is important as ongoing fibrosing inflammation may result in organ damage.

OBJECTIVE: Eritrea is the most frequent country of origin among asylum seekers in Switzerland. On their journey through the desert and across the Mediterranean Sea, Eritrea refugees are often exposed to traumatizing experiences. We report on a 30-year-old Dutch marine who was stationed in Eritrea and who was repatriated because of acute paralytic small-bowel ileus. The disease course was short and without signs of infection. After diagnostic work-up, we diagnosed Yersinia enterocolitica infection. To our knowledge this is the first reported case of Yersinia enterocolitica infection causing paralytic ileus in an adult.

In the Netherlands, 600 patients are diagnosed with tuberculosis annually, especially refugees and migrants. After arrival in the Netherlands, they are screened with a chest X-ray. However, 45% of patients present with extrapulmonary tuberculosis. We present a case of a 9 year old boy from Eritrea with tuberculosis of the central nervous system. When central nervous system tuberculosis is suspected, further diagnostic testing should be done and therapy started as soon as possible to prevent mortality and morbidity.

We report about three unliked cases of meningococcal meningitis caused by the ST-11/ET-37 strain of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W. Two of the three cases, detected in Sicily on June and July 2014, were migrants from Mali and Eritrea. The third case was a fatal meningitis occurred on November 2014 in a 37 years old man, working in an immigrant center in Calabria. This report suggests that tetravalent conjugate vaccines (ACYW) should be actively offered to the staff of migrants' reception centers.

A 34 year-old man from Eritrea presented with gradual onset bilateral loin and leg pain. Clinical examination revealed lower abdominal tenderness, ataxia and a tendency to fall backwards. The imaging and lumbar puncture provided new information. Our differential diagnosis included tuberculosis, lymphoma or other granulomatous illness. He was admitted and started on IV methylprednisolone with subsequent resolution of symptoms. Serum ELISA yielded a diagnosis of Schistosomiasis. Consequently treatment with Praziquantel was initiated and steroid therapy continued.

A 40-year old woman from Eritrea was admitted due to worsening renal function of unknown origin. The basic nephrologic workup provided no further information. Renal biopsy was performed and revealed acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) while no offending medication could be identified. Further investigations showed a recurrence of the urogenitary tuberculosis that had already been in 2015. The finding of AIN in the absence of a typical medical history should raise suspicion of infection-related forms or AIN associated with systemic diseases.
