Cephalhematoma and petechial rashes associated with acute parvovirus B19 infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Parvovirus B19 can cause petechial rashes in the acute phase of illness as well as erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) during convalescence. This petechial rash is often called "gloves and socks" syndrome because of the typical distribution of the eruption. However, involvement of other sites (e.g., intertriginous area) and generalized involvement have been recently recognized. We report here a patient with parvovirus-associated petechiae and cephalhematoma. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a previously healthy 10-year-old boy. There was a family history of fatal bleeding; his

Generalized Petechial-Purpuric Eruption in a Child: A Rare Presentation of Parvovirus B19 Infection.

While parvovirus B19 is classically associated with erythema infectiosum and papular purpuric gloves and socks syndrome, multiple additional cutaneous manifestations have been reported in the literature. This paper describes a 10-year-old girl with a generalized petechial and purpuric eruption involving the trunk, extremities, and face with distinct perioral involvement. Diagnostic evaluation, including histopathology and polymerase chain reaction testing, confirmed acute parvovirus B19 infection with spontaneous resolution over several weeks. This case highlights an atypical presentation that

Parvovirus B19-related chronic monoarthritis: immunohistochemical detection of virus-positive lymphocytes within the synovial tissue compartment: two reported cases.

Apart from systemic symptoms of viral infection parvovirus B19, the infectious agent in erythema infectiosum, can lead to mainly self-limited acute and chronic arthropathy. Because mild subclinical features of the disease can be easily overlooked, joint affections might appear as isolated symptoms. We here report two cases of chronic monoarthritic symptoms of unknown origin, where immunohistochemical detection of B19-positive lymphocytic cells in the synovial tissue led to the diagnosis of B19 arthropathy. In conclusion, respective virus diagnostics should be considered even in chronic monosym

[Association of human parvovirus B19 infection and childhood idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura: a meta analysis of Chinese literatures].

OBJECTIVE: To study the relationship between human parvovirus B19 infection and childhood idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) by the principle of evidence based medicine. METHODS: Papers related to the relationship between human parvovirus B19 infection and childhood ITP published between 1994 and 2008 were retrieved electronically from the Chinese Journals Full-text Database and the Wanfang Data. These relevant papers on case-control trials were statistically studied by meta analysis. RESULTS: Eight papers that met the inclusion criteria were included for this meta analysis. Five hund

[Papular-purpuric gloves and socks syndrome--a case report].

INTRODUCTION: Papular-purpuric gloves and socks syndrome is a rare manifestation associated with acute seronegative arthritis and skin lesions. It is triggered by a viral infection, most commonly by Human parvovirus B19 or Coxsackie group of viruses, but precise viral diagnosis is not obtained in all cases. CASE REPORT: A 54-year old male patient experienced sudden, intense pain and swelling in the carpal area of his left hand. He also presented with unusual skin lesions, and grouped small purpuric-papules on the dorsal side of the left hand. During the next few days, both feet were similarly

Papular acrodermatitis of childhood related to poxvirus and parvovirus B19 infection.

Papular acrodermatitis of childhood (Gianotti-Crosti syndrome) is considered an unspecific cutaneous pattern related to an increasing number of infectious diseases. We report two cases of Gianotti-Crosti syndrome, one of which occurred in the setting of parvovirus B19 primary infection and the other followed poxvirus infection. Parvovirus B19 and poxvirus may represent new causative agents of Gianotti-Crosti syndrome.

Annular infectious dermatoses.

Annular configuration is conspicuous in the clinical manifestation of many skin diseases and can be helpful for the diagnosis and differential diagnosis. Variations may include arciform, ring-form, annular, circinate, serpiginous, gyrated, polycyclic, targeted or figurate forms, in different colors, sizes, and numbers, with various textures and surfaces. In infectious dermatoses, the annular reactions can be specific or nonspecific, while the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. In the specific reactions caused by direct invasion of the pathogens, the contest between the centrifugal o

Parvovirus B19 Infection in Adults: A Case Series.

Parvovirus B19 infection, typically associated with erythema infectiosum in children, presents variably in adults, often leading to misdiagnosis. This case series describes three adult patients diagnosed with parvovirus B19 infection in an internal medicine outpatient clinic in March 2024. Symptoms included fatigue, joint pain, swelling, and skin rash, with misdiagnoses including early rheumatoid arthritis. The diagnosis was confirmed via positive parvovirus antibodies and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). All patients received supportive care, and symptoms resolved within an average of 18 days

Endocapillary proliferative glomerulonephritis in a patient with parvovirus B19 infection.

A 45-year-old woman developed acute nephritic syndrome after erythema infectiosum. Laboratory data on admission showed decreased serum C3, C4, and CH50 levels and the presence of both immunoglobulin (Ig) M and IgG antibodies to human parvovirus B19 (HPV). A renal biopsy showed diffuse endocapillary proliferative glomerulonephritis. Immunofluorescence microscopy indicated 2+ granular staining for IgG, IgM, and C3 over the mesangial area and along glomerular capillary walls. HPV antigen was also detected in glomeruli by immunohistochemistry. Electron microscopy showed electron-dense deposits in

[Parvovirus B19 in Adolescents and Adults: A Case Series of Clinical Mimicry].

Parvovirus B19 (PvB19), the etiological agent of erythema infectiosum, can manifest in diverse clinical forms. This study underscores the virus's capacity to mimic other diseases, as illustrated by the diagnostic challenges encountered across five cases. The first three cases correspond to an overlap of papulo-purpuric gloves and socks syndrome with petechial exanthema with periflexural and periorificial distribution, the first initially diagnosed as a drug eruption, the second as scarlet fever, and the third as autoimmune thrombocytopenia. The remaining two cases correspond to leukocytoclasti

[Exogenous causes of disordered embryonal morphogenesis].

Recent advances in exogenous factors known to cause embryopathies are reviewed. Among the non-infectious agents alcohol is the most important, followed by a combination of anticonvulsant drugs, valproic acid, retinoic acid, lithium, coumarin derivates, methyl mercury, aminopterin and methotrexate, cocaine and amniogenic bands. Rubella embryopathy is well known. Varicella zoster and herpes simplex type II viruses are now also known to be teratogenic in some cases. Erythema infectiosum has recently been detected as a cause of embryonic death. Diabetic women and women with phenylketonuria must be

[Parvoviruses as pathogenic agents in man].

Since 1981 an increasing number of human parvovirus infections have been reported. There is now clear evidence that parvovirus B19 is the causative agent of erythema infectiosum (fifth disease). Further clinical situations associated with this virus include aplastic crisis in patients with hemolytic anemia and acute and persistent arthropathies preferentially occurring in adult women. Transplacental infection during pregnancy may result in hydrops foetalis, intrauterine death and spontaneous abortion. Additional, thus far barely characterized parvoviruses have been isolated from individuals wi

Spontaneous recovery of pancytopenia in an immunosuppres- sed patient infected with Parvovirus B19.

Parvovirus B19 infection can be associated with a wide spec-trum of clinical manifestations that mainly depends on the clinical background of the patient. Infection causes severe aplastic effects on bone marrow in immunosuppressive patients. Our patient was using Azathioprine for Crohn Disease when she admitted with malaise and fatigue laboratory tests revealed pancytopenia due to Parvovirus B19 infection . But contrary to expectations patients pancytopenia improved spontaneously without any treatment. Although intravenous immuno-globulin treatment is a safe approach waiting spontaneous recove

[Exanthema as a main symptom in the febrile child].

Distinguishing in febrile children between harmless rashes and those, which require specific action, is a common problem in pediatric primary care. Major exanthematous diseases necessitating emergency hospitalization include invasive meningococcal disease and rarely gram-negative septicaemia caused by other pathogens, staphylococcal and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, endocarditis, fever and rash in travellers returning from tropical countries and drug hypersensitivity syndrome. Therapeutic intervention is also necessary in patients with scarlet fever, rheumatic fever, varicella in postpub

Epidemic patterns of infectious diseases from the results of the surveillance of infectious diseases in Japan.

Epidemic patterns of 12 infectious diseases based on the data derived from the surveillance system of infectious diseases in Japan are analyzed. Weekly numbers of patients per one monitor station (general clinics and hospitals) are calculated by prefecture. Based on these data, the patterns of epidemic are classified into five categories: Category 1, nationwide outbreak of short duration (rotavirus enteritis, hand-foot-mouth disease and herpangina); Category 2, nationwide outbreak of long duration (varicella); Category 3, concurrent outbreaks in several districts (rubella and erythema infectio

Parvovirus infection and its treatment.

B19 parvovirus is an important pathogen in man. Acute infection produces fifth disease (erythema infectiosum) in normal individuals, transient aplastic crisis in the patient with haemolysis, and pure red cell aplasia in the immunologically incompetent host. Fetal infection can lead to hydrops fetalis. The target cell of the virus is the marrow erythroid progenitor. The immune response to the virus is largely humoral and directed against limited numbers of epitopes. Persistent infection is due to failure to produce neutralizing antibodies. Because viral infection is prevalent in the population,

Progress of research on human parvovirus B19 infection after renal transplantation.

Long-term immunosuppressant use in renal transplant recipients leads to dampened immune function and high susceptibility to opportunistic pathogens. Recently, the incidence of human parvovirus B19 (HPV-B19) infection after renal transplantation has increased, which may lead to pure red cell aplasia (PRCA), affect graft function, and lead to renal injury. After renal transplantation, the clinical manifestations of HPV-B19 infection are atypical, challenging the diagnosis and treatment. Therefore, we aimed to provide a comprehensive review of the existing literature to aid in the diagnosis and t
