Transfusion clinique et biologique : journal de la Societe francaise de transfusion sanguine1994fre
The general objective is the study, through scientific approaches, of the main components of immunological risks linked to red blood cell transfusions, as well as their consequences, in order to define precise rules for prevention, taking into account that 2,700,000 units were transfused in 1992. To reach this general aim, five intermediary objectives have to be achieved: 1) The sentinel study of the methodology used to collect information about transfusion accidents, as well as their identification and their early clinical expression; 2) The analysis of the occurrence mechanisms of incompatib

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate pre-discharge iron status and identify its determinants in infants' ≤ 32 weeks gestational age (GA).
METHODS: In a prospective observational study, 24-32 weeks GA infants who did not meet exclusion criteria: congenital viral infections, chromosomal disorders, or cranio-facial anomalies were eligible. Iron status was evaluated by measuring serum ferritin (SF) at 35 weeks post-menstrual age (PMA). Infants with infection or elevated C-reactive protein within 10 days prior to evaluation of iron status were excluded.
RESULTS: Of 131 infants studied, 23% had latent iron defi

Two controversial issues of neonatal transfusion practices, erythrocyte 'booster' transfusions and granulocyte transfusions, are critically reviewed, and current recommendations for transfusion practices are made. Infants should receive erythrocyte transfusions to treat congestive heart failure caused primarily by anemia. It is customary to maintain the hematocrit at greater than 40% in neonates with severe respiratory disease, although the efficacy of this practice has not been firmly established. Erythrocyte transfusions seem to be indicated for infants with anemia plus recurrent apnea, poor

Patients worldwide require therapeutic transfusions of packed red blood cells (pRBCs), which is applied to the high-risk patients who need periodic transfusions due to leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and other blood diseases or disorders. Contrary to the general hospital population where the transfusions are carried out mainly for healthy trauma patients, in case of high-risk patients the proper quality of pRBCs is crucial. This leads to an increased demand for efficient technology providing information on the pRBCs alterations deteriorating their quality. Here we present the design of an innovati

The effectiveness of blood transfusions can be impacted by storage and extensive processing techniques that involve treatment of red blood cells (RBCs) with pathogen reduction technologies (e.g., UV-light and chemical treatment), ex vivo stem cell derivation/maturation methods, and bioengineering of RBCs using nanotechnology. Therefore, there is a need to have methods that assess the evaluation of the effectiveness of transfusions to achieve their intended purpose: to increase oxygenation of critical tissues. Consequently, there has been intense interest in the development of techniques target

Survival characteristics, after transfusion, of erythrocytes from patients with homozygous sickle-cell disease were studied in rats. The study was made possible by previous injection of the animals with ethyl plamitate, which depressed reticuloendothelial system function, and with a factor in cobra venom that inactivated complement. This treatment prevented the rapid phagocytosis and intravascular hemolysis of donor erythrocytes that usually follow a heterologous transfusion. Both immediate after transfusion recovery and survival of (51)Cr-labeled sickle erythrocytes were decreased in comparis

To determine the effects of blood transfusions on splenic function in older patients with sickle cell anemia, we investigated splenic function in 12 patients who had had cerebrovascular accidents and who were being treated at two collaborating centers using different transfusion protocols. Splenic function was assessed by radionuclide scan and pocked erythrocyte count. Patients were 6 to 18 years of age and had been receiving transfusions for 7 months to 10 years (median 4.2 years). Of the 12 children, five had normal or increased splenic size and function (normal scan and normal or minimally

The effect of blood transfusion on 51Cr-red blood cells surface-counting patterns was studied in 22 patients with homozygous beta-thalassaemia being transfused during erythrocyte survival study. Surface-counting patterns of 15 thalassaemics who had not been submitted to blood transfusion during the erythrocyte survival study were served as controls. In 17 of the transfused patients (group A), spleen excess counts (SEC) appeared decreasing after blood transfusion, reaching a minimum (about 50% of the initial value) 3-4 days later, and increasing thereafter to reach again their initial value on

BACKGROUND: Transfusion of erythropoietic precursor cells has been suggested as an alternative to conventional red blood cells. However, little is known about the fate of transfused erythrocytic precursors after they enter the bloodstream.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Erythrocytic precursors were classified by flow cytometry into different maturation stages. Precursors were enriched using cell surface expression of CD71 and Ter119 antigens and analyzed under shear stress in a parallel plate flow chamber and after fluorescence tagging with PKH and transfusion into anemic mice.
RESULTS: We found

Four pairs of rhesus monkeys and five pairs of baboons were cross-transfused with large volumes of blood given at intervals varying from 3 weeks to 30 months. Although no acute transfusion reactions were observed, there was a significant reduction in survival rate of the transfused erythrocytes correlated with the level of antibodies in recipient's serum. The immune response of the recipient animal depended on the interval between transfusions and, to some extent, on the number and kind of erythrocyte incompatibilities between the recipient and the donor. These results emphasize the importance

Red blood cell (RBC) deformability-the ability of RBCs to change shape-is crucial for their passage through microvessels and effective oxygen delivery. Deformability depends on the cell's surface area-to-volume ratio, internal viscosity, and membrane elasticity. Deformability is assessed using single-cell methods like micropipette aspiration and bulk flow techniques such as ektacytometry. RBC deformability decreases during cold storage due to biochemical and structural changes known as storage lesions. Additional processes like cryopreservation and irradiation further impair the deformability

The study was planned to investigate the effectiveness of using leucocyte filters in neonates during exchange and erythrocyte transfusion in preventing the development of anti-HLA antibodies. Twenty-four newborn infants who were admitted to the Neonatology Unit and received either exchange or at least two erythrocyte transfusions were recruited. The study group comprised of 12 infants on whom leucocyte filters were used during transfusions. Control group included the remaining 12 infants who were transfused without using a leucocyte filter. Anti-HLA antibodies in the serum samples were studied

In vivo erythrocyte polyagglutination of microbial origin is usually a transient condition. In two children with bowel disorders, erythrocyte T-polyagglutination persisted for 12 months in one case and for seven months in the other. Both cultures required both transfusions to support surgery. Washed red cell concentrates were transfused instead of whole blood to prevent dangerous destruction of T-transformed erythrocytes by anti-T antibodies normally present in the plasma of blood donors.

Ferrokinetic studies were performed in three copper-deficient swine and the results have been compared with similar studies in 18 normal pigs. The mean value for the plasma iron turnover rate in the deficient swine was 1.76 mg./kg. day; for the red cell iron incorporation rate, 1.24 mg./kg. day; for the red cell iron turnover rate, 1.18 mg./kg. day; for the red cell life span, 13 days. Corresponding figures in the normal swine were 1.11 mg./kg. day, 1.01 mg./kg. day, 0.59 mg./kg. day and 63 days, respectively. The red cell life span was measured by the use of radioactive chromium in a total of

BACKGROUND/AIMS: During storage, units of human red blood cells (pRBCs) experience membrane destabilization and hemolysis which may cause harm to transfusion recipients. This study investigates whether inhibition of acid sphingomyelinase could stabilize erythrocyte membranes and prevent hemolysis during storage.
METHODS: Human and murine pRBCs were stored under standard blood banking conditions with and without the addition of amitriptyline, a known acid sphingomyelinase inhibitor. Hemoglobin was measured with an electronic hematology analyzer and flow cytometry was used to measure erythrocyt

The authors present an analysis of specific features of transfusions of erythrocyte containing media in oncological patients. Special attention was given to necessary selection of donor erythrocytes in performing operations with massive intraoperative blood loss. It considerably contributes to a decreased number of posttransfusional reactions and complications. For the recent five years transfusions of erythrocyte containing media to more than 15 thousand patients with surgical treatment were analyzed. Among them the individual selection of donor blood was fulfilled in 2047 cases. Compatible e

Transfusion therapy is a common practice in the treatment of anaemia and can cause erythrocyte alloimmunisation. To systematise data related to erythrocyte alloimmunisation in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD), a bibliographic search was carried out in September 2017 to search for studies in four electronic databases. (i) Referring to the original work, (ii) being cohort or case-control, (iii) having been developed with individuals with SCD and (iv) having evaluated the erythrocyte alloimmunisation. Two reviewers identified the articles for inclusion in the study, extracted the predeterm

UNLABELLED: Anaemia of prematurity (AOP) is caused by a deficiency of erythropoietin, which stimulates differentiation, and growth of erythroid progenitors. The previous standard of therapy of AOP was erythrocyte transfusions. Following successful clinical trials using recombinant human eryrthropoietin (rHuEpo) to treat adults, the rHuEpo has been used to prevent and treat anaemia in preterm infants. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of rHuEpo treatment on parameters of the erythrocytic system in peripheral blood, iron concentration, and unsaturated iron bind capacity (UIBC),
