The direction change concept for reticulospinal control of goldfish escape.

This is an analysis of whether biomechanical or kinematic variables are controlled by descending reticulospinal commands to the spinal cord during escape responses (C-starts) in the goldfish. We studied how the animal contracted its trunk musculature to orient an escape trajectory. We used trunk EMG recordings as a measure of the reticulospinal output to the musculature and we simultaneously gathered high-speed cinematic records of the resulting movements. We found that the escape trajectory is controlled by (1) the relative size of the agonist versus the antagonist muscle contractions on two

[Effect of mental stimulants on electroconvulsive shock-induced retrograde amnesia].

The effect of nootropics on the retrograde amnesia induced by electroshock was studied on a model of the active conditioned escape reaction (pole jumping). In untreated animals the daily application of electroshock for three days, immediately after the training, led to a significant retardation of the development of a conditioned escape reaction. The administration of nootropics influences the development of the retrograde amnesia to different extents, the treatment regimen (application of the drug only during the training and supplementary pretreatment before the first day of training; respec

How dyslexic teenagers cope: an investigation of self-esteem, coping and depression.

Research into how dyslexics cope and the effects of their coping has received little attention in the 100 years since dyslexia has been recognized. Why is this? Well it is not an easy area to investigate, partly as most qualitative studies have looked only at coping strategies of specific dyslexics. These are individual and are unsuitable for generalizations to larger populations. This study takes a different approach to the problem. By using three standardized tests for self-esteem, coping and depression, a picture is painted of how teenage dyslexics cope and whether this affects their self-e

[Serotonin, periaqueductal gray matter and panic disorder].

This article reviews experimental evidence and theoretical constructs that implicate serotonin (5-HT) modulation of defensive behavior within the midbrain periaqueductal gray matter(PAG) in panic disorder. Results obtained with conflict tests in experimental animals indicate that 5-HT enhances anxiety, whereas results with aversive stimulation of the dorsal PAG point to an anxiolytic role of 5-HT. To solve this contradiction, it has been suggested that the emotional states determined by the two paradigms are different. Conflict tests would generate anticipatory anxiety, whereas PAG stimulation

Defensive burying in rodents: ethology, neurobiology and psychopharmacology.

Defensive burying refers to the typical rodent behavior of displacing bedding material with vigorous treading-like movements of their forepaws and shoveling movements of their heads directed towards a variety of noxious stimuli that pose a near and immediate threat, such as a wall-mounted electrified shock-prod. Since its introduction 25 years ago by Pinel and Treit [J. Comp. Physiol. Psychol. 92 (1978) 708], defensive (shock-prod) burying has been the focus of a considerable amount of research effort delineating the methodology/ethology, psychopharmacology and neurobiology of this robust and

Serotonin antagonism in panic disorder: an open trial with ritanserin.

Eleven patients with panic disorder were administered ritanserin, a post-synaptic serotonin S2 antagonist, during a 4 week period at a daily dose of 10-20 mg. The treatment resulted in a decrease in the number of panic attacks, and a diminution of agoraphobic avoidance. The possible practical and theoretical signification of these findings is discussed.

Cancer chemotherapy II: atypical hepatic injuries.

Although chemotherapy generally is accompanied by regular testing for liver enzyme abnormalities, atypical reactions may occur that escape ordinary detection, because hepatocyte injury is not the primary event. The presence of fatty liver, mitochondrial changes, and even biliary abnormalities can be associated with normal or nearly normal liver enzyme levels. This article discusses unique aspects of liver damage associated with cancer chemotherapy. These unique reactions merit special attention and a special vigilance from clinicians.

BSC1 inhibition complements effects of vasopressin V2 receptor antagonist on hyponatremia in SIADH rats.

BACKGROUND: Severe hyponatremia is most frequently caused by the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH). Although the expressional alteration of the kidney-specific apical water channel, aquaporin 2 (AQP2), in the collecting duct has been demonstrated to be involved in the development of hyponatremia and the subsequent physiologic reaction that is resistant to arginine vasopressin (AVP; vasopressin escape) in SIADH, the complete pathogenesis of and the appropriate medical treatment for hyponatremia have yet to be elucidated. METHODS: Hyponatremia was induced in ma

Investigation of human defence responses in a virtual reality environment: an EEG study.

A predatory imminence continuum displays the perceived imminence of threat to visualise the risk to the prey. Most human studies have utilised static paradigms that may lack ecological validity and limit the exploration of defensive behaviours. Therefore, the present study investigates Fight/ Flight defence responses and underlying neural correlates using EEG under varying conditions of threat proximity and escape availability using a virtual reality (VR) environment. The experiment consisted of a desktop VR environment, including training and experimental phases (5 conditions). Conditions 1 t

Poly(N-methyl-N-vinylacetamide): A Strong Alternative to PEG for Lipid-Based Nanocarriers Delivering siRNA.

Lipid-based nanocarriers have demonstrated high interest in delivering genetic material, exemplified by the success of Onpattro and COVID-19 vaccines. While PEGylation imparts stealth properties, it hampers cellular uptake and endosomal escape, and may trigger adverse reactions like accelerated blood clearance (ABC) and hypersensitivity reactions (HSR). This work highlights the great potential of amphiphilic poly(N-methyl-N-vinylacetamide) (PNMVA) derivatives as alternatives to lipid-PEG for siRNA delivery. PNMVA compounds with different degrees of polymerization and hydrophobic segments, are

Androstadienone in motor reactions of men and women toward angry faces.

The endogenous compound androstadienone modulating the evaluation of others and activating the human fear system was hypothesized in terms of processing socially relevant cues by regulating responses to angry faces. Androstadienone was investigated in association with arm movements of 62 participants (30 women) in response to happy and angry facial expressions. Volunteers pushed away or pulled toward them a joystick as fast as possible on seeing either an angry or a happy cartoon face on a computer screen. This task was repeated twice: once during exposure to androstadienone masked with clove

Interference by a nonpharmacological factor on the action of psychoactive drugs in rats. A comparative study.

The interaction of 5 psychoactive drugs (ethanol, chlorpromazine, diazepam, pentobarbital and THC) with a nonpharmacological factor was studied in rats. The nonpharmacological variable studied was the level of motivation to overcome the depressant action of the drugs administered. Rats highly motivated to perform a learned escape response (high intensity footshocks during training) required significantly higher doses of ethanol to become impaired when compared to low motivated animals (low intensity footshocks during training). However, the level of motivation did not interact with the action

Increasing Gas Bubble Escape Rate for Water Splitting with Nonwoven Stainless Steel Fabrics.

Water electrolysis has been considered as one of the most efficient approaches to produce renewable energy, although efficient removal of gas bubbles during the process is still challenging, which has been proved to be critical and can further promote electrocatalytic water splitting. Herein, a novel strategy is developed to increase gas bubble escape rate for water splitting by using nonwoven stainless steel fabrics (NWSSFs) as the conductive substrate decorated with flakelike iron nickel-layered double hydroxide (FeNi LDH) nanostructures. The as-prepared FeNi LDH@NWSSF electrode shows a much

Aspergillus fumigatus escape mechanisms from its harsh survival environments.

Aspergillus fumigatus is a ubiquitous pathogenic mold and causes several diseases, including mycotoxicosis, allergic reactions, and systemic diseases (invasive aspergillosis), with high mortality rates. In its ecological niche, the fungus has evolved and mastered many reply strategies to resist and survive against negative threats, including harsh environmental stress and deficiency of essential nutrients from natural environments, immunity responses and drug treatments in host, and competition from symbiotic microorganisms. Hence, treating A. fumigatus infection is a growing challenge. In thi

Isolation of monoclonal antibodies-escape variant of dengue virus serotype 1.

INTRODUCTION: During an outbreak from December 2004 to March 2005, 138 isolates of dengue virus were prospectively obtained from acute-phase serum samples of 1,067 patients with the provisional clinical diagnosis of acute dengue illness admitted to the adult wards of Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah, Klang, Malaysia. Of the 138 dengue virus isolates, 87, 11, 24 and 3 were typed as dengue serotypes 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively, by a commercial dengue virus typing kit using monoclonal antibodies (Mab). 13 dengue virus isolates could not be assigned to any specific serotype by serotyping Mab and mol

Escape behaviors are transiently modulated after acutely induced epileptic seizures in larval zebrafish.

Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder giving rise to both recurrent and spontaneous seizures as well as additional neurological comorbidities. In approximately 30% of patients, seizures are not ameliorated by existing anti-seizure drugs. To bridge this treatment gap, the larval zebrafish has emerged as a powerful model for high-throughput drug-screening, based on changes in swimming behavior during seizures. However, such screening has low specificity and thus requires subsequent, low-throughput validation of drug candidates. We found that behavioral escape responses to startling stimuli

Paradoxical escape responses by narwhals (Monodon monoceros).

Until recent declines in Arctic sea ice levels, narwhals (Monodon monoceros) have lived in relative isolation from human perturbation and sustained predation pressures. The resulting naïvety has made this cryptic, deep-diving cetacean highly susceptible to disturbance, although quantifiable effects have been lacking. We deployed a submersible, animal-borne electrocardiograph-accelerometer-depth recorder to monitor physiological and behavioral responses of East Greenland narwhals after release from net entanglement and stranding. Escaping narwhals displayed a paradoxical cardiovascular down-reg

Assessing video presentations as environmental enrichment for laboratory birds.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of video presentations of natural landscapes on European starlings' (Sturnus vulgaris) stereotypic behaviours (SBs) and other abnormal repetitive behaviours (ARBs) and to evaluate the impact of past experience by comparing wild-caught and hand-reared starlings' reactions. Ten wild-caught and five hand-reared starlings were presented 1-hour videos of landscapes twice a day for five successive days, while a control group of eight wild-caught and four hand-reared starlings was presented a grey screen for the same amount of time.
