Adult Rhabdomyosarcoma of Ethmoid Sinus Recurring as an Orbital Mass.

Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a primitive, malignant, round cell neoplasm derived from mesenchymal tissue that exhibits partial skeletal muscle differentiation. We describe a rare case of alveolar RMS of ethmoid sinus, recurring as an orbital mass. A 23-year-old man with the chief complaint of anosmia and mild proptosis was diagnosed with RMS of the left ethmoid sinus and orbit following an endoscopic biopsy of the mass. He was treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. At 12 months after diagnosis, while still on maintenance chemotherapy, he presented to our eye hospital with a large me

Anatomical changes of the ethmoid cavity after endoscopic sinus surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Alteration of the bony architecture of the sinus cavities has been observed in chronic sinusitis. Plasticity of the ethmoid sinus framework after endoscopic surgery, however, is a newly described entity. The objective of this study was to determine the incidence and extent of changes in ethmoid size after ethmoidectomy. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review performed at an academic medical center. METHODS: Computed tomography scans performed from 2006 through 2007 at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (n = 5,131) were reviewed to identify 100 consecutive patients who underwent s

Metastatic renal cell carcinoma to the nose and ethmoid sinus.

We report a rare case of metastatic renal cell carcinoma involving the nose and ethmoid sinus, 17 years after initial nephrectomy and diagnosis of Stage T1N0 clear cell renal cell carcinoma. The patient complained of nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) was delivered using a higher-than-conventional daily fraction size concurrently with interferon and thalidomide. The patient achieved a complete response both clinically and by magnetic resonance imaging, without any side effects. Late and rare sites of recurrences and treatment options are discussed.

Primary osteogenic sarcoma of the ethmoid sinus: a case report.

Primary osteogenic sarcoma arising from the ethmoid sinus is an extremely rare condition. We report herein a 50-year-old female presenting with lacrimation. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed tumor calcification, which is a common feature of osteogenic sarcoma. Exploratory ethmoidectomy was performed, and histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of osteogenic sarcoma. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy failed to reduce the tumor size. The patient was finally treated by anterior craniofacial resection and orbital exenteration. Although primary osteogenic sarcoma of the ethmoid sinus i

A dental implant dislocated in the ethmoidal sinus: A case report.

Maxillary sinusitis can represent a rare complication of dental implants of endodontic materials impinging in the maxillary sinuses. The effects of anatomical variants of paranasal sinuses on pathophysiological and clinical manifestations of dental sinusitis are poorly understood. Herein, we present a case of dislocation of a dental implant in the ethmoidal sinus in a 63-years old man with bilateral accessory maxillary orifice. This anatomical variation, by providing an additional way for the drainage of mucus in the maxillary sinus, could have allowed the dislocation of the implant in the eth

A rare case of radiation-induced osteosarcoma of the ethmoid sinus.

Radiation therapy has been recognized as a useful modality of treatment in head and neck malignant tumors. However, radiation over 10 Gy may predispose to secondary tumors. Radiation-induced osteosarcoma of the ethmoid sinus is unusual. These tumors may present long after radiation with epistaxis. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and biopsy are the modalities of diagnosis. We report a case of radiation-induced osteosarcoma of the ethmoid sinus 9 years after initial exposure. We describe the clinical presentation, the radiological findings, and the management.

The ethmoidal sinus roof: anatomical relationships with the intracranial cavity.

A detailed understanding of the relationship between the ethmoidal sinus and the intracranial cavity is essential to prevent intracranial penetration during orbital surgery. The authors analyzed 10 postmortem orbits with their adjacent skull bases of 5 Asian cadavers (3 males and 2 females; mean age of 80 years at death). After removing all orbital contents, skull and brain, the medial orbital wall, ethmoidal cells, and ethmoidal roof were also removed. From the intracranial cavity view, the ethmoidal roof was situated just lateral to the cribriform plate. From the orbital view, the location o

Establishment of osteoblast culture from human ethmoidal sinus.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic sinusitis is characterized by persistent chronic inflammation of the sinus system and local expression and release of various cytokines, such as IL-1 beta, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, TGF-beta and TNF-alpha are deeply involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. We hypothesized that not only the sinus mucosa-containing cells, such as epithelial cells and fibroblasts, but also osteoblasts, of which sinus bone structure consists, may contribute to this inflammatory network. This study evaluates the development and establishment of an osteoblasts culture system derived from human ethmoid

[A case of pericarotid syndrome with retention cyst in ethmoid sinus].

A 42-year-old man noted pain on the left side of his forehead and left ptosis. On examination, he showed conjunctival hyperemia, ptosis and miosis in the left side, as well as hyperesthesia in the first branch of left trigeminal nerve. An MRI of his brain showed a retension cyst in the left ethmoid sinus. There was neither abnormalities in the parasellar lesion nor in the neck. We diagnosed him with pericarotid syndrome rather than cluster headache or Raeder syndrome. Five cases who had paranasal sinus lesions as a cause of cluster headache or Raeder syndrome have been reported. More cases are

The frequency of entry into an ethmoidal sinus when performing a dacryocystorhinostomy.

Ethmoidal sinuses intervening between the lacrimal sac and the nose can cause confusion when performing a dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR). This study aimed to assess the frequency of entry into ethmoidal sinuses when performing a DCR and to identify any helpful distinguishing features, at surgery, between the ethmoidal and nasal spaces. Ethmoidal sinuses were initially entered in 23 of 50 standard DCRs (46%) in which the ostium was performed via the standard lacrimal fissure. Nasal mucosa was found to be 2 to 3 times thicker than ethmoidal sinus mucosa and less friable. Being aware of the risk of

Male fetus with epignathus originating from the ethmoidal sinus.

Epignathus or teratoma arising from the hard palate nasal cavity is an extremely rare abnormality. This tumour usually causes death in neonatal life because of its location and because surgical removal is often impossible. We are presenting a case of epignathus originating from the ethmoidal sinus delivered at gestational week 29 by caesarean section due to increasing hydramniosis. The child died within a few minutes. Prenatal diagnosis is important for genetic counselling, obstetric management and, in some cases, neonatal surgery.

Cemento-ossifying fibroma of the ethmoidal sinus manifesting as proptosis.

We report an aggressive cemento-ossifying fibroma of the ethmoidal sinus that initially manifested as proptosis and was misdiagnosed as meningioma after a frozen section was tested. Fibroosseous lesions containing cementum are considered to be of periodontal membrane origin and are most common in the mandible and maxilla. With the exception of the gigantiform cementoma, they are usually small, innocuous lesions following a benign course and are easily removed surgically. On rare occasions, the cemento-ossifying fibroma attains a large size, behaves aggressively, destroys bone, and requires rad

Paranasal sinus radiology, Part 2A: Ethmoidal sinuses.

The clinician must have a high level of suspicion in order to detect ethmoidal sinus disease. Survey plain film radiographic examination may provide information about gross changes in ethmoidal sinus transparency and the sinus walls. Conventional tomographic study will often aid evaluation of the ethmoidal sinus walls which may be obscured by overlying structures on plain films. Computerized tomography adds a new dimension to ethmoidal sinus study. By revealing not only bone changes but soft-tissue abnormality as well, more complete understanding of the disease process is gained. Computerized
