Explicit tier two vocabulary instruction for young deaf children.

This study examined the effectiveness of the explicit, evidence-based vocabulary intervention, Text Talk, for deaf children attending mainstream spoken language education settings during the early years of school. The Text Talk program is designed to guide teachers' Tier Two vocabulary instruction in the context of read-aloud storybooks. Participants included 20 children with moderate-to-profound hearing loss using spoken language to communicate, and their teachers of the deaf (ToDs) at mainstream schools with deaf facilities. The study investigated both the students' growth in vocabulary know

Exploring the capacity of smoking cessation services in the Philippines.

INTRODUCTION: In the Philippines, smoking prevalence among adult smokers is slowly decreasing from 23.8% in 2015 to 19.5% in 2021. Despite this decline, evidence shows that while two-thirds of smokers consider quitting, only half receive quit advice from healthcare providers. This study aims to assess the readiness and capacity of health facilities to deliver smoking cessation services in alignment with Administrative Order (AO) 2021-0031 of the Department of Health (DOH). METHODS: This study followed a cross-sectional design. From August to September 2023, we administered an online questionn

Designing for Social Engagement in Cognitive Care: A Case Study.

Objectives: This study reports on a postoccupancy evaluation (POE) of the Cognitive Empowerment Program (CEP), a purpose-built day program designed for individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). It examines how the built environment is perceived to support or constrain social engagement (SE) among CEP members and their care partners, and organizational effectiveness (OE) for staff. Background: MCI affects SE and daily functioning, requiring environments that foster wellbeing. However, limited research has explored how purposefully designed facilities support individuals with MCI. Unlike

Using nonpneumatic anti-shock garment for postpartum hemorrhage management and referral at the public health facilities: A pilot study in two districts of Bihar.

BACKGROUND: Nonpneumatic anti-shock garment (NASG) is a first-aid device that can save lives of women experiencing postpartum hemorrhage (PPH). OBJECTIVE: The aim was to explore the feasibility of implementation of NASG intervention at select public health primary care facilities in two high priority districts of Bihar. METHODS: Qualitative design was used to document the NASG implementation process. In-depth interviews were conducted with health-care providers in November-December 2015. These healthcare providers were chosen purposively based on their involvement in the use of NASG. The imp

The 4MOTHERS trial of the impact of a mobile money-based intervention on maternal and neonatal health outcomes in Madagascar: study protocol of a cluster-randomized hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial.

BACKGROUND: Mobile money-a service enabling users to receive, store, and send electronic money using mobile phones-has been widely adopted across low- and middle-income economies to pay for a variety of services, including healthcare. However, evidence on its effects on healthcare access and health outcomes are scarce and the possible implications of using mobile money for financing and payment of maternal healthcare services-which generally require large one-time out-of-pocket payments-have not yet been systematically assessed in low-resource settings. The aim of this study is to determine th

Effectiveness of infection prevention and control interventions in reducing health-care-associated infections in long-term care facilities for older people: a systematic review.

Existing infection prevention and control measures focus primarily on acute health-care settings; however, residents and staff in long-term care facilities are also at risk of acquiring health-care-associated infections. In this Review, we systematically evaluated the evidence on the effectiveness of infection prevention and control interventions for preventing health-care-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance in long-term care facilities for older people to inform WHO's global guidelines. We searched the databases Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Cumulati

Comparing Disaster-Related Surge Staffing Practices Across Rural and Non-Rural Nursing Homes.

BACKGROUND: Clarifying whether rural and non-rural nursing homes implement different disaster-related staffing approaches is vital to developing targeted preparedness strategies. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study of 361 nursing homes exposed to Hurricane Michael (2018), we used a comparative interrupted time series design to assess changes in staffing intensity and composition from 30 days before landfall to 7 days after. We examined three outcomes using the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Payroll Based Journal: total staffing intensity (hours per resident per day), l

Roles of social workers and community health extension workers in enhancing access to maternal and child health services: reflection on a Nigerian intervention.

Nigeria introduced Maternal and Child Health (MCH) programs to improve access to skilled care in response to persistently poor health outcomes among women and children. While existing assessments often emphasize the role of healthcare workers, the contributions of social workers and Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs) remain largely overlooked. This study explores the roles played by social workers and CHEWs in enhancing access to MCH services through an intervention project in Anambra State, Nigeria. An exploratory qualitative design was employed, involving interviews with five social

Dutch breast reconstruction guideline.

Treatment of breast cancer is complex and multidisciplinary by nature, with protocols that are updated continuously. During preoperative multidisciplinary team meetings, regularly there is discussion between team members regarding optimal timing and type of breast reconstruction, due to conflicting interests of oncological and reconstructive treatments. Therefore, a multidisciplinary, evidence-based guideline for breast reconstruction in women undergoing breast conserving therapy or mastectomy for breast cancer, or following prophylactic mastectomy was developed by a multidisciplinary working

Missed Opportunities in Neonatal Deaths in Rwanda: Applying the Three Delays Model in a Cross-Sectional Analysis of Neonatal Death.

Objective Administered in a timely manner, current evidence-based interventions could reduce neonatal deaths from infections, intrapartum injuries and complications due to prematurity. The three delays model (delay in seeking care, in arriving at a health facility, and in receiving adequate care), which has been applied to understanding maternal deaths, may be useful for understanding neonatal deaths. We assess the main causes of neonatal deaths in Rwanda and their associated delays. Methods Using a cross-sectional study design, we evaluated data from 2012 from 40 facilities in which babies we

Variations in Persistent Use of Low-Value Breast Cancer Surgery.

IMPORTANCE: Through the Choosing Wisely campaign, surgical specialties identified 4 low-value breast cancer operations. Preliminary data suggest varying rates of deimplementation and have identified patient-level and clinician-level determinants of continued overuse. However, little information exists about facility-level variation or determinants of differential deimplementation. OBJECTIVE: To identify variation and determinants of persistent use of low-value breast cancer surgical care. Interrater reliability of mechanical tests for functional classification of transtibial prosthesis components distal to the socket.

Substantial evidence suggests that the design and associated mechanical function of lower-limb prostheses affects user health and mobility, supporting common standards of clinical practice for appropriate matching of prosthesis design and user needs. This matching process is dependent on accurate and reliable methods for the functional classification of prosthetic components. The American Orthotic & Prosthetic Association developed a set of tests for L-code characterization of prosthesis mechanical properties to facilitate functional classification of passive below-knee prosthetic components.

Suicidal ideation and behaviour among community and health care seeking populations in five low- and middle-income countries: a cross-sectional study.

UNLABELLED: AimsSuicidal behaviour is an under-reported and hidden cause of death in most low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) due to lack of national systematic reporting for cause-specific mortality, high levels of stigma and religious or cultural sanctions. The lack of information on non-fatal suicidal behaviour (ideation, plans and attempts) in LMIC is a major barrier to design and implementation of prevention strategies. This study aims to determine the prevalence of non-fatal suicidal behaviour within community- and health facility-based populations in LMIC. METHODS: Twelve-month pre

Improving quality of intrapartum and immediate postpartum care in public facilities: experiences and lessons learned from Rajasthan state, India.

BACKGROUND: In spite of considerable improvement in maternal and neonatal outcomes over the past decade in India, the current maternal mortality ratio and neonatal mortality rate are far from the Sustainable Development Goal targets due to suboptimal quality of maternity care. A package of interventions for improving quality of intrapartum and immediate postpartum care was co-designed with the Ministry of Health as the Dakshata program and implemented in public sector health facilities in selected districts in the state of Rajasthan of India since June 2015. This article describes the key stra

Health Information Technology Infrastructure and Availability of Medications for Opioid Use Disorder and Naloxone in U.S. Substance Use Disorder Treatment Facilities.

Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) reduce overdose mortality, yet most individuals with opioid use disorder receive no pharmacotherapy. Facility-level health information technology may reflect broader organizational capacity, but it has rarely been examined as a marker associated with readiness to offer evidence-based opioid care. This cross-sectional secondary analysis of the 2024 National Substance Use and Mental Health Services Survey (N-SUMHSS) Public Use File included a base sample of 20,813 substance use disorder treatment facilities and used complete-case adjusted logistic regre

Multi-component chlorination intervention to reduce neonatal infections in healthcare facilities in western Kenya (CLEAN Trial): study protocol for a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The proportion of births occurring at healthcare facilities is rising globally, yet the birthing environment in healthcare facilities in low-income settings is often contaminated with bacterial pathogens, including antibiotic-resistant pathogens, that can lead to serious infections for newborns and their mothers. There is a need for effective strategies to reduce environmental contamination in healthcare facilities to reduce infection risks among facility-born neonates and their mothers.
