Exploring the effect of the Group Size and Feedback of non-player character spectators in virtual reality exergames.

Despite the widespread interest in leveraging non-player characters (NPCs) to enhance gameplay experiences, there is a gap in understanding of how NPC spectators (i.e., those virtual characters in the scene that watch users' actions) affect players. For instance, the impact of NPC spectators' presence and feedback on players' performance and experience has not been studied, especially in virtual reality (VR) exergames. This paper aims to fill this gap and reports two user studies that assess their effect on such games. Study 1 explored the impact of having NPC spectators present and their feed

Effects of Exergaming in Patients with Cardiovascular Disease Compared to Conventional Cardiac Rehabilitation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs are used for improving prognosis and quality of life in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Nonetheless, adherence to these programs is low, and exercise-based CR programs based on virtual reality (i.e., exergaming) have been proposed as an alternative to conventional CR programs. However, whether exergaming programs are superior to conventional CR programs in patients with CVD is not known. Objective: This systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted to explore whether exergaming enhances exercise capacity, quality

AI-Based Exergaming as a Digital Assessment Tool for Post-Stroke Upper-Limb Function: Protocol for a Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Accurate assessment of upper limb motor function is critical for guiding effective rehabilitation strategies in stroke survivors. The Fugl-Meyer Assessment for Upper Extremity (FMA-UE) is a widely used clinical tool, yet it is time-consuming and subject to inter-patient variability. A low-cost, computer vision-based exergame was developed to provide a remote rehabilitation alternative that also enables motor assessment. This approach represents a promising alternative for scalable and objective assessment, but requires validation. This study aims to evaluate the feasibi

Movement and Frontal Theta Activity During Step-Based Exergaming in Healthy Younger and Older Adults: Laboratory-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Exergames are increasingly used in rehabilitation to simultaneously target physical and cognitive functions. Game scores are commonly used as indicators of performance, yet it remains unclear to what extent they reflect underlying movement and cognitive-control demands. Understanding this relationship is essential for interpreting what exergame performance scores reflect during gameplay. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate how movements and frontal theta activity, used as a proxy for cognitive-control demands, relate to game performance across game levels and age groups in a step-b

Efficacy of Sensor-Based Training Using Exergaming or Virtual Reality in Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain: A Systematic Review.

In its chronic and non-specific form, low back pain is experienced by a large percentage of the population; its persistence impacts the quality of life and increases costs to the health care system. In recent years, the scientific literature highlights how treatment based on assessment and functional recovery is effective through IMU technology with biofeedback or exergaming as part of the tools available to assist the evaluation and treatment of these patients, who present not only with symptoms affecting the lumbar spine but often also incorrect postural attitudes. Aim: Evaluate the impact o
