Effect of using of a lower-extremity exoskeleton on disability of people with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Although ongoing exercise is known to reduce disability in people with multiple sclerosis (MS), participation in lower-extremity exercise programs can be limited by their existing mobility impairments. Lower-extremity exoskeletons could address this problem by facilitating home and community locomotion and enhancing exercise capability but little data is available on the potential of this technology for reducing disability of people with MS. METHODS: We evaluated the Keeogo™ exoskeleton for people with MS using an open-label randomised cross-over design. The trial design allowed u

A Wearable Soft Robotic Exoskeleton for Hip Flexion Rehabilitation.

Leg motion is essential to everyday tasks, yet many face a daily struggle due to leg motion impairment. Traditional robotic solutions for lower limb rehabilitation have arisen, but they may bare some limitations due to their cost. Soft robotics utilizes soft, pliable materials which may afford a less costly robotic solution. This work presents a soft-pneumatic-actuator-driven exoskeleton for hip flexion rehabilitation. An array of soft pneumatic rotary actuators is used for torque generation. An analytical model of the actuators is validated and used to determine actuator parameters for the ta

Effect of walking with an active ankle exoskeleton on the biomechanical responses of the lumbar spine.

OBJECTIVE: Musculoskeletal injuries pose a health threat to U.S. Service members. In particular, the physical demands of walking and running with load carriage contribute to a high incidence of musculoskeletal injuries of the lower back. Active ankle exoskeleton devices are promising technologies that may help mitigate the impact of load carriage on the incidence of these injuries. However, the safe extended use of these devices requires an understanding of their beneficial or detrimental effects on the lumbar spine. In this pilot study, we investigated the impact of walking with an ankle exos

A 3D-printed passive exoskeleton for upper limb assistance in children with motor disorders: proof of concept through an electromyography-based assessment.

The rehabilitation of children with motor disorders is mainly focused on physical interventions. Numerous studies have demonstrated the benefits of upper function using robotic exoskeletons. However, there is still a gap between research and clinical practice, owing to the cost and complexity of these devices. This study presents a proof of concept of a 3D-printed exoskeleton for the upper limb, following a design that replicates the main characteristics of other effective exoskeletons described in the literature. 3D printing enables rapid prototyping, low cost, and easy adjustment to the pati

A pediatric robotic thumb exoskeleton for at-home rehabilitation: the Isolated Orthosis for Thumb Actuation (IOTA).

In this paper, we present the design of a thumb exoskeleton for pediatric at-home rehabilitation. Pediatric disorders, such as cerebral palsy (CP) and stroke, can result in thumb in palm deformity greatly limiting hand function. This not only limits children's ability to perform activities of daily living but also limits important motor skill development. Specifically, the device, dubbed IOTA (Isolated Orthosis for Thumb Actuation) is a 2-DOF thumb exoskeleton that can actuate the carpometacarpal (CMC) and metacarpalphalangeal (MCP) joints through ranges of motion required for activities of da

Preliminary Assessment of a Compliant Gait Exoskeleton.

Current commercial wearable gait exoskeletons contain joints with stiff actuators that cannot adapt to unpredictable environments. These actuators consume a significant amount of energy, and their stiffness may not be appropriate for safe human-machine interactions. Adjustable compliant actuators are being designed and implemented because of their ability to minimize large forces due to shocks, to safely interact with the user, and to store and release energy in passive elastic elements. Introduction of such compliant actuation in gait exoskeletons, however, has been limited by the larger powe

Quantifying changes in individual-specific template-based representations of center-of-mass dynamics during walking with ankle exoskeletons using Hybrid-SINDy.

Ankle exoskeletons alter whole-body walking mechanics, energetics, and stability by altering center-of-mass (CoM) motion. Controlling the dynamics governing CoM motion is, therefore, critical for maintaining efficient and stable gait. However, how CoM dynamics change with ankle exoskeletons is unknown, and how to optimally model individual-specific CoM dynamics, especially in individuals with neurological injuries, remains a challenge. Here, we evaluated individual-specific changes in CoM dynamics in unimpaired adults and one individual with post-stroke hemiparesis while walking in shoes-only

Simulation of a Passive Knee Exoskeleton for Vertical Jump Using Optimal Control.

Research on exoskeletons designed to augment human activities and the attendant exoskeleton industry are both rapidly growing areas of endeavor. However, progress in the field is currently being hindered by a lack of understanding of human-exoskeleton interactions. At present, the main method applied to reach such an understanding is to build and test prototypes or end-effectors (that simulate the devices), but this is a very time-consuming and costly process. In this study, we aimed to address this problem by simulating passive exoskeleton-human interactions during a vertical jump. The simula

Motor imagery BCI enables more practical and user-friendly exoskeleton control than smartwatch for users with spinal cord injury: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) technology has been widely studied for enabling individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) to control assistive robotic devices, such as lower-limb exoskeletons. Although BCI-based control of lower-limb exoskeletons has been investigated in individuals with SCI, comparisons with conventional interfaces, such as smartwatches, remain limited. In this study, we developed a BCI system that enables individuals with SCI to control a lower-limb exoskeleton through voluntary walking-related motor imagery. METHODS: This study involved 5 individuals

Can lower-limb exoskeletons support sit-to-stand motions in frail elderly without crutches? A study combining optimal control and motion capture.

With the global geriatric population expected to reach 1.5 billion by 2050, different assistive technologies have been developed to tackle age-associated movement impairments. Lower-limb robotic exoskeletons have the potential to support frail older adults while promoting activities of daily living, but the need for crutches may be challenging for this population. Crutches aid safety and stability, but moving in an exoskeleton with them can be unnatural to human movements, and coordination can be difficult. Frail older adults may not have the sufficient arm strength to use them, or prolonged u

Myoelectric Control Systems for Upper Limb Wearable Robotic Exoskeletons and Exosuits-A Systematic Review.

In recent years, myoelectric control systems have emerged for upper limb wearable robotic exoskeletons to provide movement assistance and/or to restore motor functions in people with motor disabilities and to augment human performance in able-bodied individuals. In myoelectric control, electromyographic (EMG) signals from muscles are utilized to implement control strategies in exoskeletons and exosuits, improving adaptability and human-robot interactions during various motion tasks. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art myoelectric control systems designed for upper-limb wearable robotic exo

Integrating Evaluation into Exoskeleton Systems: A Model-Based Approach.

The evaluation of wearable robotic systems remains a challenge, particularly in real-world environments where laboratory-based methods are impractical. Existing approaches rely on external instrumentation, such as surface electromyography (sEMG) or motion capture, which are difficult to deploy continuously and do not directly measure key internal metrics such as joint loading or spinal forces. This work introduces a new paradigm for exoskeleton evaluation in which biomechanical assessment is embedded directly within the device's sensing and computational architecture. We present the ExoMetrix

Modeling and validation of crutch-supported exoskeleton gait using a double-inverted pendulum approach.

PURPOSE: Exoskeleton-assisted walking for individuals with paraplegia presents unique biomechanical challenges due to minimal lower-limb actuation and substantial reliance on upper-body support via crutches. However, quantitative models rarely elucidate the dynamic interplay between exoskeleton actuation and crutch assistance. METHODS: We introduce a double-inverted pendulum model that captures the essential dynamics of crutch-supported exoskeleton gait. The model extends the canonical inverted pendulum framework by directly encoding gravitationally induced hip torques and ground reaction forc

Design and feasibility of the T-GRIP thumb exoskeleton to support the lateral pinch grasp of spinal cord injury patients.

Improving the impaired hand function of spinal cord injury patients with a robotic exoskeleton can highly impact their self-management, and ultimately their quality of life. In this paper the design and evaluation of a new, lightweight (50 gram) robotic thumb exoskeleton, called TGRIP, was presented that supports the lateral pinch grasp. The mechanism consists of a linear actuator that was mounted to the dorsal side of the hand, and a force transmission mechanism that flexes the thumb towards the side of the index finger. The thumb movement was controlled through contralateral wrist rotation.

Comparison of flexion and extension moments from passive low-back exoskeletons as a function of angular velocity.

Pain or injury to the low back are prevalent among individuals engaged in physically demanding occupations or tasks involving repetitive manual material handling, resulting in significant personal and societal burdens. Exoskeletons have emerged as a promising technology to mitigate the risk of injuries by providing mechanical support and reducing the physical demand on the body. Exoskeleton providers provide minimal information related to the support capability of their product, as many do not publish these magnitudes. Further, it is currently unclear whether these device's behaviors change un

ChMER: an exoskeleton robot with active body weight support walker based on compliant actuation for children with cerebral palsy.

INTRODUCTION: Lower limb exoskeleton robots for young children with cerebral palsy (CP) are crucial to support earlier rehabilitation that is more beneficial than later. For safety reasons, pediatric exoskeletons are usually equipped with body weight support (BWS) devices to help young patients maintain balance. However, existing pediatric exoskeletons tend to use stiff joint actuation and passive BWS with limited compliance. METHOD: This paper proposes a novel mobile exoskeleton robot for young children (3- ∼ 6-years-old) with CP based on intrinsically compliant actuation. A compact kinemati
