Expressed Emotion and Attributions in Relatives of Patients With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Panic Disorder.

Relatives' criticism of, hostility toward, and emotional overinvolvement (EOI) with patients are predictive of treatment response and relapse. Although these constructs have been linked to relatives' attributions for patient problems, little research has yet evaluated attributions for specific types of problems. This study examined event-specific attributions (i.e., attributions specifically for either disorder-related [DR] or non-DR problems) in relatives of patients with anxiety disorders. Relatives made more illness attributions (attributing problems to a patient's disorder) than controllab

Expressed emotion in panic disorder: Relationship with demographic and clinical variables and quality of life.

OBJECTIVE: Expressed emotion (EE) predicts the outcome of treatment in patients with anxiety disorders. We aimed to investigate the relationship between EE and demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with panic disorder (PD), to determine whether there is a difference between PD, major depressive disorder (MDD) patients and healthy controls (HC) in terms of EE and to investigate the effect of EE on quality of life (QOL) in patients with PD. METHODS: Our study involved a total of 150 participants (50 patients in each group). All participants were given the Level of Expressed Emoti

Exploring the relevance of expressed emotion to the treatment of social anxiety disorder in adolescence.

The role that the involvement of parents may play in the treatment outcome of their children with anxiety disorders is still under debate. Some studies dealing with other disorders have examined the role that the expressed emotion (EE) construct (parental overinvolvement, criticism and hostility) may play in treatment outcome and relapse. Given that some of these aspects have been associated with social anxiety for a long time, it was hypothesized that EE may be associated with lower treatment outcome. The sample was composed of 16 adolescents who benefited from a school-based, cognitive-behav

Expressed emotion and behavior therapy outcome: a prospective study with obsessive-compulsive and agoraphobic outpatients.

The relationship of expressed emotion (EE) to behavior therapy outcome for obsessive-compulsive disorder (n = 60) and panic disorder with agoraphobia (n = 41) was investigated. Relatives' emotional overinvolvement and hostility predicted higher rates of treatment dropout. Higher hostility, as assessed by the Camberwell Family Interview (CFI), was related to poorer outcome for target ratings and for the Social Adjustment Scale; higher perceived criticism was also predictive of worse response on target ratings. In contrast, nonhostile criticism on the CFI was associated with better outcome on th

Cross-national reliability, concurrent validity, and stability of a brief method for assessing expressed emotion.

The Five-Minute Speech Sample (FMSS; Magana et al., 1986) is a brief method designed to assess the "expressed emotion" (EE) status of a respondent. The FMSS-EE rating is derived from statements made by a patient's key relative during a 5-minute monologue, with codes similar to those used in the original EE rating system (e.g., criticism and emotional overinvolvement). Rating is done from the audiotape and takes about 15-30 minutes. The article reports on the results of a cross-national study carried out in Germany using the FMSS with a sample of 60 relatives of schizophrenic patients. Results

The resolution of facial expressions of emotion.

Much is known on how facial expressions of emotion are produced, including which individual muscles are most active in each expression. Yet, little is known on how this information is interpreted by the human visual system. This paper presents a systematic study of the image dimensionality of facial expressions of emotion. In particular, we investigate how recognition degrades when the resolution of the image (i.e., number of pixels when seen as a 5.3 by 8 degree stimulus) is reduced. We show that recognition is only impaired in practice when the image resolution goes below 20 × 30 pixels. A s

Expressing emotions through music.

Music evokes strong emotions across listeners although it conveys no biologically relevant information regarding the survival challenges in the environment. Here we review the neurobiology and psychology of emotional communication through music, focussing on the functions and mechanisms of musical emotional expressions in social interaction. We also extend our analysis of the communicative space beyond the pure acoustic features to the interaction of musical emotional cues with other verbal and non-verbal communication channels. Activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis of neuroimaging st

Hemifacial asymmetry in emotion expressions.

We examined asymmetry in posed facial expression of emotions: happy and sad. Hemifacial composite photographs, left-left and right-right, were prepared, and subjects rated these for intensity of expressed emotion. Overall, left-left composites were judged to have expressed emotions relatively more intensely than the right-right composites. The significant Sex x Emotion interaction revealed that female expressors were judged as more expressive than male expressors in expressing sad facial emotion. Sex difference in expression of happy facial emotion was not significant.

Caregiving experience and expressed emotion among parents of adolescents suffering from anorexia nervosa following illness onset.

The aim of this study was to better understand the relationship between parents' experience of caregiving and expressed emotion during the early stage of their child's eating disorder. Fifty mothers and 38 fathers of adolescents suffering from anorexia nervosa and hospitalized for the first time participated in this study. They completed the Experience of Caregiving Inventory, a measure of the negative and positive aspects of the caregiving experience, and the Family Questionnaire, which measured the different dimensions of expressed emotion, namely emotional over-involvement and critical comm

Family-based treatment for transition age youth: the role of expressed emotion and general family functioning.

The aim of this study was to investigate changes in family functioning and parental expressed emotion (EE) in parents and transition age youth (18 to 25 years old) with Anorexia Nervosa participating in Family-Based Treatment for Transition Age Youth (FBT-TAY). Further, we examined whether perceived family functioning and EE were associated with changes in eating disorder behaviour and weight in participants at end-of-treatment and three months post-treatment. Generalized estimating equations revealed that changes in family functioning significantly improved from baseline to end-of-treatment (

Expressed emotion and familial interaction: a study with agoraphobic and obsessive-compulsive patients and their relatives.

Patients with panic disorder with agoraphobia (n = 40) or obsessive- compulsive disorder (n = 61) participated in a 10-min problem-solving interaction with their primary relative. Relatives were categorized as hostile or nonhostile toward the patient on the basis of a measure of expressed emotion (EE). Observed interactions between patients and their hostile relatives, relative to those of dyads with a nonhostile relative, were marked by higher rates of relatives' criticism and of patients' negativity but not by higher rates of negative reciprocity. Analyses of sequences indicated that the dya

Maternal expressed emotion as a predictor of emotional and behavioral problems in low birth weight children.

The purpose of this study was to determine the degree to which maternal emotions expressed toward low birth weight infants (<2500 gm) at six months of age predicted emotional and behavioral problems at two years of age. With a sample of 83 mother-infant dyads, a Revised Five Minute Speech Sample (R-FMSS) was used to measure the Expressed Emotion (EE) constructs of Negative EE (criticism, hostility), Positive EE (positive remarks, warmth) and Overinvolved EE. Problem behaviors were measured at two years of the child's age utilizing the Child Behavior Checklist/2-3. Infant temperament was contro

Women whose mental illnesses recur after childbirth and partners' levels of expressed emotion during late pregnancy.

Expressed emotion (EE) in the partners of 25 pregnant women with a history of psychosis or severe depression and in 13 pregnant control subjects without any previous psychiatric disorder was assessed in the ninth month of pregnancy. At this time, no patient presented as a case according to RDC. Eleven subjects with a history of psychiatric disorder experienced a further episode of illness in the six months following delivery. Partners of women who became ill had made fewer critical and positive comments about their wives during the pregnancy than the partners of women who remained well. Poor s

Emotion coaching skills as an augmentation to family-based therapy for adolescents with anorexia nervosa: A pilot effectiveness study with families with high expressed emotion.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the feasibility and acceptability of augmenting family-based treatment (FBT) for adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) or atypical anorexia nervosa (AAN) with a parent emotion coaching intervention (EC) focused on reducing parent expressed emotion. METHOD: In this pilot effectiveness trial, families of adolescents with AN/AAN exhibiting high expressed emotion received standard FBT with either (1) EC group or (2) support group (an attention control condition focused on psychoeducation). RESULTS: Forty-one adolescents with AN or AAN were recruited (88% female, Mage  = 14

Parental expressed emotion, family conflict, and symptom severity in adolescent offspring of parents with mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: Levels of expressed emotion (EE) in caregivers are associated with recurrence risk in individuals with mood disorders. In adolescent offspring of parents with mood disorders, we examined the longitudinal associations between parental EE, family conflict and youths' mood states during a trial of family-focused therapy (FFT). METHODS: Participants (N = 62; mean 15.7 yrs. ± 1.6) had current depressed mood, mood instability, and a parent with a history of depression or bipolar disorder. Families received 12 sessions of videoconference-based FFT (psychoeducation, communication, and pro

What predicts the course of expressed emotion in relatives of patients with schizophrenia or related psychoses?

The expressed emotion (EE) index may not be as stable as it was once believed to be. The aim of this study was to identify variables associated with spontaneous change from low to high and from high to low levels of EE and EE subscales--critical comments (CC), hostility (H), emotional overinvolvement (EOI). Using a longitudinal, prospective study design, of 59 relatives having at least weekly face-to-face contact with 40 patients with an acute episode or relapse into schizophrenia (DSM-III-R) were interviewed by means of the Camberwell Family Interview (CFI) at admission and at 4 1/2 months af

Expressed emotion, relapse rate and utilization of psychiatric inpatient care in schizophrenia. A study from Czechoslovakia.

The link between expressed emotion (EE), relapse rate and the length of rehospitalization in the 12 months after index discharge was investigated in a sample of 125 patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective psychosis. The results showed that EE was the best single predictor of relapse and that patients from high EE families spent three times as long in hospital as patients from low EE families. The protective impact of regular antipsychotic medication and low face-to-face contact with relatives was found in patients both from high and low EE families.

Emotion experience and expression goals shape emotion regulation strategy choice.

Research has begun to investigate how goals for emotion experience-how people want to feel-influence the selection of emotion regulation strategies to achieve these goals. We make the case that it is not only how people want to feel that affects strategy selection, but also how they want to be seen to feel. Incorporating this expressive dimension distinguishes four unique emotion goals: (1) to experience and express emotion; (2) to experience but not express emotion; (3) to express but not experience emotion; and (4) to neither experience nor express emotion. In six experiments, we investigate
