The double capsules in macro-textured breast implants.

Breast implants are amongst the most widely used types of permanent implants in modern medicine and have both aesthetic and reconstructive applications with excellent biocompatibility. The double capsule is a complication associated with textured prostheses that leads to implant displacement; however, its etiology has yet to be elucidated. In this study, 10 double capsules were sampled from breast expander implants for in-depth analysis; histologically, the inner capsular layer demonstrated highly organized collagen in sheets with delamination of fibers. At the prosthesis interface (PI) where

Three-week joint immobilization increases anterior-posterior laxity without alterations in mechanical properties of the anterior cruciate ligament in the rat knee.

BACKGROUND: Although knee immobilization may deteriorate the mechanical parameters of the anterior cruciate ligament, such as stiffness and failure strength, it is unknown whether it induces laxity in the whole joint. We examined the effects of immobilization on anterior-posterior joint laxity and mechanical properties of the anterior cruciate ligament, as well as histological and gene expression profiles of the joint capsule in rat knee joints. METHODS: Unilateral rat knees were immobilized using an external fixator. Non-immobilized contralateral knees were used as controls. After 3 weeks, a

Effect of superior capsule and coracohumeral ligament release on strain in the repaired rotator cuff tendon. A cadaveric study.

Twelve cadaveric shoulders were used to determine the effects of release of the superior capsule and the coracohumeral ligament on the strain in the repaired rotator cuff tendon. A rotator cuff tear (2 cm wide and 1.5 cm long) was created and repaired under a 3-kg tensile force. The strain in the repaired tendon was measured with use of linear transducers with the arm in 50 different positions. Release of either the superior capsule or the coracohumeral ligament diminished the tension of the repaired rotator cuff by an average of 25% with the arm in adduction. Release of both of these structur

Gray matter and white matter abnormalities in online game addiction.

Online game addiction (OGA) has attracted greater attention as a serious public mental health issue. However, there are only a few brain magnetic resonance imaging studies on brain structure about OGA. In the current study, we used voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis and tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) to investigate the microstructural changes in OGA and assessed the relationship between these morphology changes and the Young's Internet Addiction Scale (YIAS) scores within the OGA group. Compared with healthy subjects, OGA individuals showed significant gray matter atrophy in the rig

Finite element modelling of the glenohumeral capsule can help assess the tested region during a clinical exam.

The objective of this research was to examine the efficacy of evaluating the region of the glenohumeral capsule being tested by clinical exams for shoulder instability using finite element (FE) models of the glenohumeral joint. Specifically, the regions of high capsule strain produced by glenohumeral joint positions commonly used during a clinical exam were identified. Kinematics that simulated a simple translation test with an anterior load at three external rotation angles were applied to a validated, subject-specific FE model of the glenohumeral joint at 60° of abduction. Maximum principal

Myo/Nog cells are present in the ciliary processes, on the zonule of Zinn and posterior capsule of the lens following cataract surgery.

Myo/Nog cells, named for their expression of MyoD and noggin, enter the eye during early stages of embryonic development. Their release of noggin is critical for normal morphogenesis of the lens and retina. Myo/Nog cells are also present in adult eyes. Single nucleated skeletal muscle cells designated as myofibroblasts arise from Myo/Nog cells in cultures of lens tissue. In this report we document the presence of Myo/Nog cells in the lens, ciliary body and on the zonule of Zinn in mice, rabbits and humans. Myo/Nog cells were rare in all three structures. Their prevalence increased in the lens

Biomechanical properties of the capsule and extracellular matrix play a major role during the Wolffian/epididymal duct development.

BACKGROUND: The epididymis is important for sperm maturation and without its proper development, male infertility will result. Biomechanical properties of tissues/organs play key roles during their morphogenesis, including the Wolffian duct. It is hypothesized that structural/bulk stiffness of the capsule and mesenchyme/extracellular matrix that surround the duct is a major biomechanical property that regulates Wolffian duct morphogenesis. These data will provide key information as to the mechanisms that regulate the development of this important organ. OBJECTIVES: To measure the structural/b

The combined use of DTI and MR elastography for monitoring microstructural changes in the developing brain of a neurodevelopmental disorder model: Poly (I:C)-induced maternal immune-activated rats.

Early neuropathology mechanisms in neurodevelopmental disorders are partially understood because routine anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) cannot detect subtle brain microstructural changes in vivo during postnatal development. Therefore, we investigated the potential value of magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in a rat model of neurodevelopmental disorder induced by maternal immune activation. We studied 12 offspring of mothers injected with polyriboinosinic-polyribocytidylic acid (poly (I:C), 4 mg/kg) on gestational day 15, plus 8 controls. T2-

Battery-Free Tattooing Mechanism-Based Functional Active Capsule Endoscopy.

This paper presents a novel tattooing capsule endoscope (TCE) for delivering a certain amount of ink to the submucosal layer of digestive tract organs. A dual-function permanent magnet is used for locomotion and injection activation. The developed capsule endoscope can move actively in 5 DOF due to the interaction between the permanent magnet and a controllable external magnetic field produced by an electromagnet actuation system. In addition, the permanent magnet is involved in a specially designed mechanism to activate a process that creates a squeezing motion to eject the liquid from the st
