Ovarian cancer (OC) remains a significant women's health concern due to its high mortality rate and the challenges posed by late detection. Exploring novel biomarkers could lead to earlier, more specific diagnoses and improved survival rates for OC patients. This review focuses on biomarkers associated with extracellular vesicles (EVs) found in various proximal fluids, including urine, ascites, utero-tubal lavage fluid of OC patients. We highlight these proximal fluids as rich sources of potential biomarkers. The review explains the roles of EV biomarkers in ovarian cancer progression and disc

Lung infections are one of the most common causes of death and morbidity worldwide. Both bacterial and viral lung infections cause a vast number of infections with varying severities. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) produced by different cells due to infection in the lung have the ability to modify the immune system, leading to either better immune response or worsening of the disease. It has been shown that both bacteria and viruses have the ability to produce their EVs and stimulate the immune system for that. In this review, we investigate topics from EV biogenesis and types of EVs to lung bac

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nano-sized membrane-bounded particles, released by all cells and capable of transporting bioactive cargoes, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, to regulate a variety of biological functions. Seminal plasma is enriched in EVs, and extensive evidence has revealed the role of EVs (e.g. prostasomes and epididymosomes) in the male genital tract. Recently, EVs released from testicular cells have been isolated and identified, and some new insights have been generated on their role in maintaining normal spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis in the testis. In the seminif

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membrane-coating nanoparticles derived from cells. The effect of cell-to-cell communication mediated by EVs has been investigated in different fields of physio-logical as well as pathological process in recent years. Reproduction, regarded as a definitive characteristic of organisms, has been a focus in both animal and medical sciences. It is well agreed that implantation is a critical event during early pregnancy in viviparous animals, and a proper implantation is essential for the establishment and maintenance of normal pregnancy. However, successful implanta

Cutaneous melanoma arises from a malignant transformation of the melanocytes in the skin. It is the deadliest form of skin cancer owing to its potential to metastasize. While recent advances in immuno-oncology have been successful in melanoma treatment, not all the patients respond to the treatment equally, thus individual pre-screening and personalized combination therapies are essential to stratify and monitor patients. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as promising biomarker candidates to tackle these challenges. EVs are ~50-1000-nm-sized, lipid bilayer-enclosed spheres, which are s

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality all over the world. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), small lipid-bilayer membrane vesicles released by most cellular types, exert pivotal and multifaceted roles in physiology and disease. Emerging evidence emphasizes the importance of EVs in intercellular communication processes with key effects on cell survival, endothelial homeostasis, inflammation, neoangiogenesis, and thrombosis. This review focuses on EVs as effective signaling molecules able to both derail vascular homeostasis and induce vascular dysfunct

Infectious proteins or prions are self-replicating transmissible aggregates responsible for heritable traits in yeasts and amyloid diseases in mammals. Extensive investigations into the many prions discovered in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and most importantly the [PSI+] prion, shaped our understanding of the cellular mechanisms involved in amyloidosis. [PSI+] arises from the assembly of the translation terminator Sup35p into insoluble fibrillar aggregates leading to nonsense suppression phenotypes. We recently found that infectious Sup35p particles traffic via extracellular (EV) and p

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are small, cell-derived membranous particles containing various nucleic acids, proteins, and lipids that play essential roles in intercellular communication. Evidence indicating that part of the regenerative benefit from stem cell therapy arises through EVs released from transplanted cells created interest in using EVs for clinical applications. EVs from various cellular sources, including mesenchymal stem cells, neural stem cells, and glia, are efficacious in models of neurological disease. In these models, EVs attenuate reactive gliosis, neuronal death, pro-infla

Multiple types of cancer have the specific ability to home to the bone microenvironment and cause metastatic lesions. Despite being the focus of intense investigation, the molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate the metastasis of disseminated tumor cells still remain largely unknown. Bone metastases severely impact quality of life since they are associated with pain, fractures, and bone marrow aplasia. In this review, we will summarize the recent discoveries on the role of extracellular vesicles (EV) in the regulation of bone remodeling activity and bone metastasis occurrence. Indeed,

BACKGROUND: Alopecia is a prevalent condition that significantly impacts appearance, mental health, and overall quality of life. Current clinical treatments for alopecia include medication, hair transplantation, low-level light therapy, and stem cell therapy, among others. However, the effectiveness of these treatments remains far from ideal. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as a promising therapeutic strategy, yet challenges, such as mass production and clinical application persist. This review aims to explore recent advancements in the use of EVs for the treatment of alopecia.

Cells from organisms across all kingdoms of life continuously release a diverse repertoire of extracellular vesicles (EVs) into their extracellular environment as an elegant strategy for both, cellular homeostasis and communication with other cells. Through different biogenesis routes within the donor cell, nanosized vesicles are generated either from endomembranes or the plasma membrane, and loaded and decorated with macromolecular cargo in a controlled manner through molecular sorting machineries. Since they can affect a recipient cell in the same tissue, distant organs or even other organis

Although thrombolytic therapy has enjoyed relative success, limitations remain, such as a narrow therapeutic window and inconsistent efficacy. Consequently, there is a pressing need to develop novel therapeutic approaches. In recent years, extracellular vesicles (EVs) have garnered increasing attention as a potential alternative to stem cell therapy. Because of their ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and exert neuroprotective effects in cerebral ischemia and hemorrhage, the exploration of EVs for clinical application in stroke treatment is expanding. EVs are characterized by high hetero

Extracellular vesicles represent a group of structures with the capacity to communicate with different cells and organs. This complex network of interactions can regulate multiple physiological processes in the organism. Very importantly, these processes can be altered during the appearance of different diseases including cancer, metabolic diseases, etc. In addition, these extracellular vesicles can transport different cargoes, altering the initiation of the disease, driving the progression, or even accelerating the pathogenesis. Then, we have explored the implication of these structures in di

Kidney disease is a global health and healthcare burden. Glomerulonephritis (Gn), both primary and secondary, is generally characterized by an inflammatory glomerular injury and may lead to end-stage renal disease. Kidney biopsy is fundamental to the diagnosis; however, kidney biopsy presents some concerns that may partly hamper the clinical process. Therefore, more accurate diagnostic tools are needed. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membranous vesicles released by cells and found in bodily fluids, including urine. EVs mediate intercellular signaling both in health and disease. EVs can have

Different types of cells, such as endothelial cells, tumor-associated fibroblasts, pericytes, and immune cells, release extracellular vesicles (EVs) in the tumor microenvironment. The components of EVs include proteins, DNA, RNA, and microRNA. One of the most important functions of EVs is the transfer of aforementioned bioactive molecules, which in cancer cells may affect tumor growth, progression, angiogenesis, and metastatic spread. Furthermore, EVs affect the presentation of antigens to immune cells via the transfer of nucleic acids, peptides, and proteins to recipient cells. Recent studies

Extracellular vesicles (EV), which include exosomes and microvesicles, are secreted from virtually every cell. EV contain mRNA, miRNA, lipids and proteins and can deliver this expansive cargo into nearby cells as well as over long distances via the blood stream. Great interest has been given to them for their role in cell to cell communication, disease progression, or as biomarkers, and more recent studies have interrogated their potential as a therapeutic that may replace paracrine-acting cell therapies. The retina is a conveniently accessible component of the central nervous system and the p

OBJECTIVE: Abnormal pulmonary vasculature directly affects the development and progression of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH)-associated pulmonary hypertension (PH). Though overarching structural and cellular changes in CDH-affected pulmonary arteries have been documented, the precise role of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in the pulmonary artery (PA) pathophysiology remains undefined. Here, we quantify the structural, compositional, and mechanical CDH-induced changes in the main and distal PA ECM and investigate the efficacy of mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (MSC-E

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as promising biologic and comprehensive therapies for precision medicine. Despite their potential demonstrated at the benchtop, few EV formulations have made it to the clinic due to challenges in regulatory compliant scalable production; including purity, homogeneity, and reproducibility. For translation of this technology, there is a strong need for novel production methods that can meet clinical production criteria. Initial research aimed to address these challenges by taking advantage of natural pathways to increase EV yields. Such "conventional" ap

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are promising endogenous nanocarriers, yet how biomolecules adsorption shapes their in vivo fate remains unclear. Here, we examine how biomolecular corona formation regulates the biodistribution, cellular recognition, and clearance of extracellular vesicles. Using EVs derived from macrophages and breast cancer cells, together with artificially prepared cell membrane-derived vesicles (CVs) generated from the corresponding parental cells as controls, we observed markedly different circulation and clearance behaviors despite their comparable physicochemical properties
