Efficacy and Effectiveness of Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy in Patients with Myofascial Pain or Fibromyalgia: A Scoping Review.

Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) and fibromyalgia (FM) are underestimated painful musculoskeletal conditions that could impact function and quality of life. A consensus about the most appropriate therapeutic approach is still not reached. Considering the long course of the diseases, prolonged assumption of drugs, such as NSAIDs and pain killers, could increase the risk of adverse events, often leading affected patients and physicians to prefer non-pharmacological approaches. Among these, radial and focused extracorporeal shock waves therapies (ESWT) are widely used in the management of painful m

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) in the treatment of atrophic non-unions of femoral shaft fractures.

INTRODUCTION: As of now, the role of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) in the treatment of atrophic non-unions is inconclusive. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of ESWT and the role of this technology in the treatment of atrophic non-union of femurs. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 22 patients treated between July 1999 and September 2007 in our hospital with ESWT for atrophic non-unions of isthmic femoral shaft fractures that were initially treated surgically using closed reamed nailing procedure. Patients with open fractures, skeletal immaturity, on an

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy shows time-dependent chondroprotective effects in osteoarthritis of the knee in rats.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies reported that extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) has a chondroprotective effect on the initiation and regression of osteoarthritis of the knee in rats. However, the time course effects of ESWT in the osteoarthritic knee are not fully understood. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of ESWT over time on osteoarthritis of the knee in rats. METHODS: We used 72 8-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats with body weights ranging from 245 to 265 g. We randomly divided the rats into three groups, with 24 rats in each group. The control group received neithe

[Extracorporeal shockwave therapy in tendionosis calcarea of the rotator cuff: comparison of different treatment protocols].

AIM OF THE STUDY: Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is a new therapeutic procedure for chronically painful calcifying tendinitis of the rotator cuff. The therapy may vary with the number of applied impulses or with impulse energy. Shock waves with an energy of 0.04 to 0.12 mJ/mm2 define low-dose ESWT, in contrast to high-dose ESWT (> 0.12 mJ/mm2). The aim of the study was to verify the hypothesis that either high-dose or low-dose ESWT could be effective if the total amount of applied energy was similar. METHOD: Fifty patients were assigned at random to 2 groups. The treatment consisted

Recommendations for use of extracorporeal shockwave therapy in sports medicine: an international modified Delphi study.

OBJECTIVES: While extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) may be an efficacious adjunctive treatment option for musculoskeletal injuries, current research is limited by significant heterogeneity within treatment protocols. This study aims to establish international expert consensus recommendations on ESWT terminology, parameters, procedural considerations, contraindications and side effects in the application of ESWT to sports injuries. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed on the use of ESWT for musculoskeletal and sports medicine injuries to identify potential panellists, fo

Prognostic factors of extracorporeal shockwave therapy in the treatment of nonunion in long bones: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Nonunion of long bone fractures is a significant complication following surgical fixation, with an incidence ranging from 5 to 10%. Surgical intervention is the standard treatment for nonunions, but it may come with potential complications. Nonoperative approaches, such as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), have been advocated as alternatives. METHODS: In the retrospective study conducted between January 2004 and January 2018, 91 patients who underwent ESWT for tibia or femur nonunions were included. Nonunion was defined based on radiographic criteria and clinical symptoms.

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy for the treatment of scaphoid delayed union in a tennis player: A case report.

Operative procedures are considered the gold standard when treating delayed union or non-union of the scaphoid despite their considerable complexity and the risk of intraoperative complications. Although extracorporeal shockwave therapy has been reported as a non-invasive treatment option for non-union cases, only a few papers on delayed union or non-union of the scaphoid have been published. A 57-year-old man with delayed union of a scaphoid fracture was treated with extracorporeal shockwave therapy and showed complete bone healing with promising results two months after the start of treatmen

The use of radial extracorporeal shockwave therapy in the treatment of urethral urolithiasis in the horse: a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Radial extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is widely used in equine practice for the treatment of orthopedic problems. However, its original use as a lithotripsy device in human and canine urology led us to postulate that it could be used as an alternative to the surgical treatment of urethral calculi in horses. HYPOTHESIS: Radial ESWT can easily and safely fragment calculi in the distal urethra of the horse. ANIMALS: Two postmortem cases and 1 live case of obstructive urinary disease admitted at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Liege. METHODS: A radial shockwave device w

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy for zoster-associated pain: A retrospective analysis based on spinal musculoskeletal imbalance.

Herpes zoster-associated pain (ZAP) is a common sequela of varicella-zoster virus reactivation, particularly among older adults. Emerging evidence suggests that spinal musculoskeletal homeostasis (SMH) imbalance may contribute to localized degenerative changes associated with ZAP. Although extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) has shown promise in musculoskeletal rehabilitation, its efficacy in treating ZAP from the perspective of SMH remains underexplored. This retrospective study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of ESWT in ZAP patients with musculoskeletal imbalance as assessed by imagin
