Carbon isotope composition of low molecular weight hydrocarbons and monocarboxylic acids from Murchison meteorite.

The origin of the organic matter in carbonaceous meteorites remains controversial despite extensive study over the past 20 yr. Motivated by the expectation that the patterns of isotopic variation with molecular structure among the organic compounds would contain important clues to their origin, we have measured the carbon isotopic compositions for individual hydrocarbons and monocarboxylic acids from Murchison meteorite, a C2 carbonaceous chondrite which fell in Australia in 1969. With few exceptions, notably benzene, the volatile products are substantially isotopically heavier than their terr

[Weltanschauung aspects of the problem of man, the biosphere and space].

The paper discusses philosophic approaches to the problem of man-environment interplay. Many important problems humanity faces today are associated with biology. Biomedical and astrophysical studies are being carried out to gain a better insight into the laws governing evolution and further development of the Universe. The emergence of a human society started a qualitatively new stage in the evolution of organic matter. A rapid progress of science and engineering is accompanied by a significant rearrangement of the natural environment and, particularly, of living beings. The biosphere is trans

Survival limits of psychrotolerant microorganisms with relevance for planetary protection of the icy moons.

Investigating the survival limits of extremophilic microorganisms exposed to simulated space conditions can shed light on the ability of terrestrial microorganisms to survive and propagate on other planetary bodies. Although microbes can be found in all environmental niches on Earth, this study focuses on psychrophilic and psychrotolerant microorganisms (prokaryotes and eukaryotes) which have been isolated from locations of interest such as icy moon analogue environments (e.g. Canadian high arctic, Antarctica) and cleanrooms, which might be relevant for forward planetary protection. Our resear

Radiation environment on TGO Mars orbit during solar particle events in January-October 2024. Corresponding solar eruptions and GOES proton fluxes data.

The dosimeter Liulin-MO for measuring the radiation environment on board the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) is a module in the Fine Resolution Epithermal Neutron Detector (FREND). A number of solar energetic particle (SEP) events were observed in Mars orbit from July 2021 to 2024 during the increasing phase and close to the maximum of the 25th solar cycle activity. The results from the SEPs measurements obtained in 2021-2023 by Liulin-MO have been previously reported. Here we present the Liulin-MO results from the observation of the radiation parameters of the SEP events during January- Octob

Deep space environment empowering drug design and development.

The unique characteristics of the deep space environment, microgravity, cosmic radiation, and extreme temperature fluctuations, are emerging as major driving forces for pharmaceutical innovation. These factors provide new avenues for optimizing drug formulations, improving crystal structure quality, and accelerating the discovery of therapeutic targets. Advances in deep space research not only help overcome critical bottlenecks in terrestrial drug development but also promote progress in structure-based drug design and deepen understanding of cellular stress-response mechanisms. Current progre

Multi-technique characterization of iron reduction by an Antarctic Shewanella: an analog system for putative Martian biosignature identification.

Microbes from terrestrial extreme environments enable testing of biosignature production in conditions relevant to astrobiological targets. Mars, which was likely more conducive to life during early warmer and wetter epochs, has inspired missions that search for signs of early life in the surficial rock record, including mineral or organic biosignatures. Microbial iron reduction is a common and ancient metabolism that may have also operated on other rocky celestial bodies. To investigate biosignature production during iron reduction, a Shewanella sp. (strain BF02_Schw) isolated from a subglaci

Spectroscopic investigations of fungal biomarkers after exposure to heavy ion irradiation.

The main objective of the ongoing and future space exploration missions is the search for traces of extant or extinct life (biomarkers) on Mars. One of the main limiting factors on the survival of Earth-like life is the presence of harmful space radiation, that could damage or modify also biomolecules, therefore understanding the effects of radiation on terrestrial biomolecules stability and detectability is of utmost importance. Which terrestrial molecules could be preserved in a Martian radiation scenario? Here, we investigated the potential endurance of fungal biomolecules, by exposing de-h

The chlorine isotope composition of the moon and implications for an anhydrous mantle.

Arguably, the most striking geochemical distinction between Earth and the Moon has been the virtual lack of water (hydrogen) in the latter. This conclusion was recently challenged on the basis of geochemical data from lunar materials that suggest that the Moon's water content might be far higher than previously believed. We measured the chlorine isotope composition of Apollo basalts and glasses and found that the range of isotopic values [from -1 to +24 per mil (per thousand) versus standard mean ocean chloride] is 25 times the range for Earth. The huge isotopic spread is explained by volatili

Photochemical modeling of Titan's atmosphere.

We have developed a new photochemical model of Titan's atmosphere which includes all the important compounds and reactions in spherical geometry from the surface to 1240 km. Compared to the previous model of Yung et al. (1984, Astrophys. J. Suppl. 55, 465-506), the most significant recent change in the reactions used is the updated methane photodissociation scheme (Mordaunt et al. 1993, J. Chem. Phys. 98(3), 2054-2065). Moreover, the transfer of the solar radiation in the atmosphere and the photolysis rates have been calculated by using a Monte Carlo code. Finally, the eddy diffusion coefficie

HCN and chromophore formation on Jupiter.

The formation of HCN and chromophores are two of the major unsolved problems of the atmospheric chemistry of Jupiter. The question to be dealt with is the same in each case: how can these unsaturated organic compounds be formed in the highly reducing atmosphere (89% H2) present on Jupiter? The photolysis of ammonia/acetylene mixtures provides an answer to this question. Here we report the formation of both HCN and chromophores along with experimental data which support the premise that this photochemical process provides a route for the formation of both substances. It is not clear whether sig

Bacillus subtilis endospore integrity and viability on simulated Martian regolith in rotational UVC radiation exposures.

Current understanding of Martian regolith has advanced due to various rover explorations. Due to this, there are now several variants of Martian regolith that are chemically known and commercially available. These simulants are vital for panspermia models that suggest a transfer of simple life throughout the solar system via ejecta containing life from Mars when its surface was more favourable to host life. Bacteria that produce endospores are suitable candidates for these models as they have adequate protection from the harsh conditions of space. To assess this, the simple endospore former, B

A Pressure-Supported Pneumatic Architecture for Robust Deep Drilling on Mars: Performance Modeling, Sizing, and Mission Integration.

Accessing the martian deep subsurface is a long-standing scientific priority for astrobiology, climate reconstruction, and planetary evolution, yet robotic drilling missions have historically been limited by wellbore instability, loss of working-fluid circulation, and the risk of irrecoverable tool entrapment. This work presents and evaluates a wireline, downhole-actuated pneumatic drilling architecture designed to directly mitigate these mission-ending risks through active wellbore pressure support and continuous cuttings removal within a single, sealed CO2 circulation system. The proposed sy

Nanophase Goethite as a Promising Target in the Search for Past Life on Mars.

The ubiquitous iron oxides and oxyhydroxides on Mars represent intriguing targets in the search for evidence of past microbial life on the Red Planet. So far, no studies have systematically investigated microbial fossils in fluviolacustrine ferricrete composed entirely of nanophase goethite; thus, our understanding of biosignatures in such deposits is limited. Here, we report exceptionally well-preserved microfossils in laminated nanophase goethite from the Miocene McGraths Flat Lagerstätte, New South Wales, Australia. Using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy, we i

Biomaterials for organically generated habitats beyond Earth.

Sustaining life beyond Earth requires the creation of habitats, which is typically assumed to require costly transport of high-mass components from Earth. Here, we investigate an alternative approach based on in situ fabrication using biologically generated materials. We show that several common biomaterials are capable of blocking UV radiation, transmitting visible light, and maintaining pressure differences sufficient to permanently stabilize liquid H2O in a vacuum or low-pressure environment. As a proof of concept, we then demonstrate growth of eukaryotic green alga in a 3D printed PLA biop

The Existing Frameworks of Delivery of Major Volatiles and the Feasibility of Mars-Mass Planetary Embryos as the Major Volatile Contributors to Bulk Silicate Earth.

The presence of major volatile elements-carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and sulfur-on Earth is critical for establishing life. The origin of these life-essential volatile elements (LEVEs) on Earth has been studied for many years. Here, we present a brief compilation of the prevailing ideas regarding volatile delivery to Earth and evaluate their origins, strengths, and weaknesses. Motivated by the fact that one model of LEVE delivery is via a giant impactor to Earth, we subsequently present a geochemical model aimed at understanding the possible volatile inventory and fractionation between the core

The ocular surface during spaceflight: Post-mission symptom report, extraterrestrial risks, and in-flight therapeutics.

Ocular health is critical for overall astronaut health requirements given its essential role for mission performance and safety. The ocular surface is a vital structure to the visual system and is essential for ocular protection and the refraction of light for focused vision. Data from the 2024 NASA Lifetime Surveillance of Astronaut Health identified that Space Shuttle and International Space Station (ISS) astronauts (N = 257) queried during post-flight eye exams reported symptoms of eye irritation (34 %), dry eyes (14 %), and foreign body sensation (21 %). Given these findings, it is critica

Quantifying the Potential for Nitrate-Dependent Iron Oxidation on Early Mars: Implications for the Interpretation of Gale Crater Organics.

Geological evidence and atmospheric and climate models suggest habitable conditions occurred on early Mars, including in a lake in Gale crater. Instruments aboard the Curiosity rover measured organic compounds of unknown provenance in sedimentary mudstones at Gale crater. Additionally, Curiosity measured nitrates in Gale crater sediments, which suggests that nitrate-dependent Fe2+ oxidation (NDFO) may have been a viable metabolism for putative martian life. Here, we perform the first quantitative assessment of an NDFO community that could have existed in an ancient Gale crater lake and quantif

H2O at the Phoenix landing site.

The Phoenix mission investigated patterned ground and weather in the northern arctic region of Mars for 5 months starting 25 May 2008 (solar longitude between 76.5 degrees and 148 degrees ). A shallow ice table was uncovered by the robotic arm in the center and edge of a nearby polygon at depths of 5 to 18 centimeters. In late summer, snowfall and frost blanketed the surface at night; H(2)O ice and vapor constantly interacted with the soil. The soil was alkaline (pH = 7.7) and contained CaCO(3), aqueous minerals, and salts up to several weight percent in the indurated surface soil. Their forma
