Examining the Effects of Ambient Temperature on Pre-Term Birth in Central Australia.

Preterm birth (born before 37 completed weeks of gestation) is one of the leading causes of death among children under 5 years of age. Several recent studies have examined the association between extreme temperature and preterm births, but there have been almost no such studies in arid Australia. In this paper, we explore the potential association between exposures to extreme temperatures during the last 3 weeks of pregnancy in a Central Australian town. An immediate effect of temperature exposure is observed with an increased relative risk of 1%-2% when the maximum temperature exceeded the 90

[Progress of research on the potential impacts of extreme climates on the distribution of Oncomelania hupensis].

The frequent extreme climatic events post multifaceted impacts on the distribution of Oncomelania hupensis, the intermediate host of Schistosoma japonicum in the context of global climate change. This article systematically reviews the effects of four types of extreme climatic events, including floods, droughts, heat waves, and cold waves, on the survival, reproduction, and distribution of Oncomelania hupensis. Floods may expand suitable snail habitats, and increase both emerging and re-emerging snail habitats; however, the impact of floods on O. hupensis density is characterized by a lag effe

Exposure to extreme temperatures may increase the risk of preterm birth: findings from a contemporary US cohort.

BACKGROUND: The frequency and severity of extreme temperatures have been increasing and are expected to continue to escalate in the coming decades. Relationships between extreme temperatures and early deliveries are not well understood. METHODS: Data were obtained from 201 759 pregnancies with gestational age (GA) of >27 weeks in the Consortium on Safe Labor retrospective cohort study from 19 hospitals across the USA for 2002-8. Location-specific bulk temperatures were obtained from the Parameter-Elevation Regressions on Independent Slopes Model (4-km resolution), from which participants were

Association between air temperature and COVID-19 emergency department visits in Ontario, Canada: A population-based case-crossover study.

BACKGROUND: The impact of air temperature on COVID-19-related health outcomes, particularly in the context of extreme weather, remains underexplored. METHODS: This time-stratified case-crossover study included 200,679 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 emergency department (ED) visits in Ontario, Canada, from 2020 to 2023. Conditional logistic regression with distributed lag nonlinear models was used to assess the association of mean daily temperature with COVID-19 ED visits. Cumulative 0-5-day lag associations of cold and heat exposure were presented as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence inter

Effects of gestational ambient extreme temperature exposures on the risk of preterm birth in China: A sibling-matched study based on a multi-center prospective cohort.

BACKGROUND: Previous epidemiological findings on extreme temperature and preterm birth (PTB) were heterogeneous, especially for extreme cold exposure. Measured and unmeasured individual-level factors such as genetic factors or lifecourse exposures may constitute important contributors but have not been addressed. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to examine the association of gestational heat and cold exposure with PTB using a novel sibling-matched study. METHODS: Based on a multi-center population-based birth cohort across 16 counties in China, we included 10,826 sibling pairs born from March 2013 to De

Genomic Insights into Winter Wheat Breeding for Severely Cold Climates.

Wheat is one of the world's most important crops, cultivated across diverse ecogeographic zones on more than ~245 million hectares annually. Classified by vernalization requirement into spring, facultative, or winter types, the latter typically achieves higher yields due to its extended growing season, reaching ~18 t ha-1 and 9-10 t ha-1 as a national average for Western European countries such as Germany, France, and England, compared with the global average of barely above 3 t ha-1. Despite this potential, winter wheat is largely confined to regions with relatively mild winters, while vast t

Delayed perforation after cold snare polypectomy for small colonic polyps in a patient receiving oral corticosteroids.

This case report describes a fatal outcome due to delayed perforation after cold snare polypectomy in a patient with bullous pemphigoid receiving oral corticosteroids. Cold snare polypectomy has become the standard treatment for small colorectal polyps because of the procedure's safety and simplicity. In this case, however, corticosteroid therapy and vasculitis may have caused local necrosis and tearing of the intestinal wall. Corticosteroids are widely used, and perforation after cold snare polypectomy is extremely rare. However, some patients on corticosteroid therapy may have special pathol

Comparative transcriptomics unveils the role of DELLA protein GAIP-B in cold tolerance of mango (Mangifera indica L.).

BACKGROUND: Cold stress severely limits the productivity and geographical distribution of mango, a tropical fruit crop of significant economic importance. We combined transcriptomic profiling and functional genomics to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying cold tolerance in mango. RESULTS: Comparative analysis of the cold-tolerant Jinhuang (JH) and cold-sensitive Guiqi (GQ) cultivars identified 7,757 unique deferentially expressed genes (DEGs) were specifically altered in JH under cold stress, with significant enrichment in plant hormone signal transduction pathways. Notably, the DEL

Frostbite of the feet after cryotherapy: a report of two cases.

UNLABELLED: The use of cryotherapy for the reduction of postoperative swelling and pain has become commonplace in orthopedic, podiatric, and cosmetic surgery. Prolonged exposure to extreme cold may induce an injury nearly identical to that of frostbite. The authors report on 2 patients who underwent podiatric orthopedic surgery and were exposed to prolonged cold therapy, which resulted in limb-threatening problems. Both patients had prolonged and essentially uninterrupted application of cryotherapy for 4 to 7 days, resulting in rewarming injuries of tissue necrosis. A team of specialists used

Evolutionary consequences of extreme climate events.

Extreme climate events, such as storms, droughts or cold waves, wreak havoc on human and natural systems, but they can also catalyze rapid evolutionary change. Because such extreme events have historically been rare and difficult to forecast, studies of their biological impacts have mostly been serendipitous, limiting our understanding of their evolutionary consequences. However, with extreme climate events now increasing in frequency and severity due to human-induced global change, the opportunity - and need - to study their evolutionary consequences has grown. Drawing on a set of case studie

The relationship between extreme ambient temperature and small for gestational age: A cohort study of 1,436,480 singleton term births in China.

Studies have shown that exposure to extreme ambient temperature can contribute to adverse pregnancy outcomes, however, results across studies have been inconsistent. We aimed to evaluate the relationships between trimester-specific extreme temperature exposures and fetal growth restriction indicated by small for gestational age (SGA) in term pregnancies, and to assess whether and to what extent this relationship varies between different geographic regions. We linked 1,436,480 singleton term newborns (2014-2016) in Hubei Province, China, with a sub-district-level temperature exposures estimated

Hydroxymethanesulfonate and Sulfur(IV) in Fairbanks Winter During the ALPACA Study.

Hydroxymethanesulfonate (HMS) in fine aerosol particles has been reported at significant concentrations along with sulfate under extreme cold conditions (-35 °C) in Fairbanks, Alaska, a high latitude city. HMS, a component of S(IV) and an adduct of formaldehyde and sulfur dioxide, forms in liquid water. Previous studies may have overestimated HMS concentrations by grouping it with other S(IV) species. In this work, we further investigate HMS and the speciation of S(IV) through the Alaskan Layered Pollution and Chemical Analysis (ALPACA) intensive study in Fairbanks. We developed a method utili

A Weak-Aggregation Electrolyte Enables Lithium-Ion Capacitors at Ultra-Low Temperature.

The operation of low-earth orbit satellites, Antarctic research stations, and certain extreme cold environments demands energy storage devices (ESDs) capable of functioning at -100°C or lower. Conventional electrolytes are limited by sluggish ion transport and unstable electrode-electrolyte interphases at low temperatures, severely degrading the performance of electrochemical ESDs under extreme cold. Herein, we report a weak-aggregation (AGG-w) electrolyte reconciling bulk-phase ion transport with interfacial kinetics at ultra-low temperatures (ULT). This is achieved through the strategic inco

Human thermal sensitivity drifts at extreme temperatures.

Humans continuously adapt their behavior to ambient temperature, yet little is known about how they integrate distributed thermal sensations into a unified perception. This study investigates how people perceive changes in whole-body thermal environments, particularly under extreme conditions. In a between-subjects design conducted between November 2023 and April 2024, 51 participants compared the temperature felt in four independently controlled climate chambers. To generate meaningful perceptual contrasts, the temperatures varied dynamically within specific ranges: the mild condition involve

Molecular Challenges and Opportunities in Climate Change-Induced Kidney Diseases.

As temperatures continue to modify due to weather changes, more regions are being exposed to extreme heat and cold. Physiological distress due to low and high temperatures can affect the heart, blood vessels, liver, and especially, the kidneys. Dehydration causes impaired cell function and heat itself triggers cellular stress. The decline in circulating plasma volume by sweat, which stresses the renal and cardiovascular systems, has been related to some molecules that are crucial players in preventing or provoking cellular damage. Hypovolemia and blood redistribution to cutaneous blood vessels

Cold intolerance of the hand measured by the CISS questionnaire in a normative study population.

Cold intolerance has been recognized as one of the most disabling sequelae of upper extremity trauma, especially when neurovascular structures are involved. In this study, we aimed to describe cold intolerance in a normative study population, validate the Cold Intolerance Symptom Severity (CISS) questionnaire and define the threshold for abnormal cold intolerance. One hundred and eight volunteers participated in our study. In addition to the CISS score, information about age, gender and previous surgery or trauma to the upper extremity was obtained. There were no volunteers with previous perip

[The geese who flew home for Christmas].

Gray geese of the bar-headed type (Anser indicus synonym: Eulabeia indica) perform trans-Himalayan migratory flight at extreme altitude. The physiological mechanisms include hyperventilation of cold air, increased lung diffusion capacity, proton gradients, high muscular temperature, amino acid mutation in haemoglobin and cytochrome oxidase, re-location of mitochondria, and extreme shifts in the oxy-haemoglobin dissociation curve due to Bohr- and temperature effects. The second annual migration takes place in late autumn, and the bar-headed geese come home in due time before Christmas.

Cold sensitivity as a new side effect after sympathicotomy for hyperhidrosis.

Extremity cold sensitivity is a previously unreported side effect of thoracoscopic sympathicotomy. We report a case of a young man who underwent thoracoscopic sympathicotomy for hyperhidrosis, after which cold sensitivity developed in his sympathicotomized right hand and arm. When exposed to cold, the right hand and forearm become numb and the skin temperature drops to uncomfortable levels, while the left extremity remains comfortably warm.

Warning: Tourniquets Risk Frostbite in Cold Weather.

We sought to better understand the frostbite risk during first-aid tourniquet use by reviewing information relevant to an association between tourniquet use and frostbite. However, there is little information concerning this subject, which may be of increasing importance because future conflicts against near-peer competitors may involve extreme cold weather environments. Historically, clinical frostbite cases with tourniquet use occurred in low frequency but in high severity when leading to limb amputation. The physiologic response of vasoconstriction to cold exposure leads to limb cooling and
