Independent and synergistic effects of extreme heat and NO2 pollution on diabetic nephropathy in a type II diabetes mouse model.

Extreme heat and traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) have been linked to worsening chronic health disorders, however, their combined effects on diabetic nephropathy (DN) are little understood. Type II diabetic mice were exposed to heat (40 °C) and NO2 (5 ppm) separately for 4 h per day over 6 weeks to investigate the synergistic effects on the progression of DN. We found that exposure to high temperature and NO2 elevated blood glucose levels and exacerbated histopathological changes. Additionally, there were increased oxidation indicators (ROS, MDA, 8-OHdG) and decreased antioxidant indicator

Marathon Performance and Pacing in the Doha 2019 Women's IAAF World Championships: Extreme Heat, Suboptimal Pacing, and High Failure Rates.

PURPOSE: The Doha 2019 women's World Championship marathon took place in extreme hot (32 °C), humid conditions (74% relative humidity) culminating in unprecedented (41%) failure rates. We explored whether extreme heat or suboptimal pacing was responsible for diminished performance against a temperate "control" (London 2017: 19 °C, 59% relative humidity) and whether physical characteristics (eg, body surface area, estimated maximal oxygen uptake, habitual heat exposure) explained performance. METHOD: Five-kilometer-pace (km·h-1) data underwent repeated-measures analyses of hot (Doha, n = 40) v

Ambient extreme heat exposure in summer and transitional months and emergency department visits and hospital admissions due to pregnancy complications.

Although extreme heat exposure (EHE) was reported to be associated with increased risks of multiple diseases, little is known about the effects of EHE on pregnancy complications. We examined the EHE-pregnancy complications associations by lag days, subtypes, sociodemographic characteristics, and areas in New York State (NYS). We conducted a case-crossover analysis to assess the EHE-pregnancy complications associations in summer (June-August) and transitional months (May and September). All emergency department (ED) visits and hospital admissions due to pregnancy complications (ICD 9 codes: 630

[Hyperthermia in malignant tumors of the extremities--experimental heating by a radiofrequency applicator and its clinical significance].

We studied hyperthermia for malignant tumors of the extremities, and obtained the following findings. In osteosarcoma cultured cells from OST (Human) and Dunn (Mouse), proliferation was clearly inhibited on being heated to 42 approximately 43 degrees C. On heat-treating the femurs of pigs, a rise in temperature to 42.5 degrees C or above was observed so that an antitumor effect could be anticipated. Moreover, no abnormal rise in temperature in the tissues surrounding the bone and light microscopy revealed no particular abnormalities. Clinically, a rise in temperature above 42.5 degrees C was o

A systematic review and meta-analysis comparing the health burden of extreme heat and cold on mortality and urgent care utilization.

BACKGROUND: Globally, extreme temperature events are expected to increase in frequency and intensity, yet the evidence on the impact of extreme temperatures on urgent care indicators is not extensively documented. METHODS: Relevant observational quantitative studies from 2000 to 2024 were searched. We applied MeSH search approach to construct the search terms and included studies meeting the PECOS (Population, Exposure, Comparator, Outcome and Study design) criteria. Urgent care utilization included hospitalization, emergency department visits (EDVs), length of stay (LoS), and medical costs.

Effect of foot immersion and neck cooling on renal, intestinal, immune and inflammatory markers in older adults exposed to extreme heat.

Older adults with reduced thermoregulatory capabilities are increasingly at risk of heat-related pathophysiological outcomes (e.g., acute kidney injury, heatstroke) due to increasingly frequent, prolonged and intense heatwaves. Foot immersion and neck cooling have been proposed as practical, non-electrical cooling strategies for protecting older adults during heatwaves, though evidence supporting their efficacy is limited. This study evaluated the effect of foot immersion with or without neck cooling on systemic proteins associated with acute kidney injury (NGAL, KIM-1), intestinal enterocyte

Impact of exposure to extreme heat events during pregnancy on the incidence of congenital heart disease in offspring: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The aetiology of congenital heart disease (CHD) is multifactorial. Environmental risk factors have emerged as an important modifiable determinant of several congenital cardiac conditions. Previous studies have shown a strong relationship between CHD and air pollution. Much less is known about the influence of ambient temperature on CHD. The primary objective of this meta-analysis was to examine the association between exposure to extreme heat events (EHE) during pregnancy and CHD in the offspring. METHODS: comprehensive literature search was conducted using electronic databases su

The role of extreme heat exposure on premature rupture of membranes in Southern California: A study from a large pregnancy cohort.

BACKGROUND: Significant mortality and morbidity in pregnant women and their offspring are linked to premature rupture of membranes (PROM). Epidemiological evidence for heat-related PROM risk is extremely limited. We investigated associations between acute heatwave exposure and spontaneous PROM. METHODS: We conducted this retrospective cohort study among mothers in Kaiser Permanente Southern California who experienced membrane ruptures during the warm season (May-September) from 2008 to 2018. Twelve definitions of heatwaves with different cut-off percentiles (75th, 90th, 95th, and 98th) and du

Outdoor extreme heat-related dementia risk and the role of socioeconomic disparities: evidence from 20 years of data on US older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Extreme heat is increasingly recognized as a significant threat to brain health. However, human evidence from large, longitudinal studies remains limited. We examine whether outdoor heat exposure is associated with incident dementia and whether socioeconomic factors moderate this risk. METHODS: Leveraging data from the 2000 to 2020 Health and Retirement Study (N = 28,512), we assigned census-tract-level 5-year exposure to the number of "Extreme Caution" (90°F to 102°F [32.2°C to 39.3°C]) and "Danger+" (≥103°F [39.4°C]) heat days, adjusting for moves. Impact of age, cardiorespiratory fitness, and regular physical activity on physiological strain and cognitive performance during a 6-h extreme heat exposure.

Aging, cardiorespiratory fitness, and habitual physical activity influence thermoregulation and cognition, yet their combined impact during prolonged extreme heat exposure is not well understood. This study investigated how these factors influence thermal strain and cognitive performance across the adult lifespan under extreme heat stress. Sixty-one participants (27 females; 20-79 yr) wore an accelerometer for 7 days, completed a graded exercise test to determine peak oxygen uptake (V̇o2peak), and underwent a 6-h heat exposure (43°C, 25% relative humidity) with episodic exercise to simulate da

Prenatal exposure to extreme ambient heat may amplify the adverse impact of Superstorm Sandy on basal ganglia volume among school-aged children.

BACKGROUND: Weather-related stressors on healthy brain development has become an important topic in recent years. Notably, prenatal stress exposure to natural disasters may disrupt child neurodevelopment, with recent research exploring its impact on child brain morphology. Prenatal exposure to extreme weather events, such as ambient heat, may also affect child brain morphology. The basal ganglia, while historically related to motor ability, has gained increasing attention for its role in various non-motor functions, such as emotion regulation. Leveraging an existing cohort with and without pre

Sustainable cooling strategies for workers in the ready-made garment factory industry in Bangladesh under simulated extreme heat: a randomised crossover trial.

BACKGROUND: Bangladesh frequently experiences extreme heat and humidity, which threatens the health, wellbeing, and productivity of ready-made garment workers. Scalable, sustainable, and low-cost cooling strategies are urgently needed to protect this workforce in low-income and middle-income countries. Therefore, we examined the effects of building-level and personal-level cooling alternatives to air conditioning on worker heat strain in a simulated Bangladesh ready-made garment factory. METHODS: In a randomised cross over trial (ACTRN12622000457741), healthy participants (aged 18-40 years) r

Antipsychotics and other risk factors for mortality among people with schizophrenia during an extreme heat event: a population-based case-control study.

Schizophrenia is associated with increased mortality during extreme heat events (EHEs), including the unprecedented 2021 Western North America EHE in British Columbia, Canada. We sought to examine the association between mortality during the 2021 EHE and multiple risk factors among people with schizophrenia, with a focus on antipsychotic medications. We identified all individuals with schizophrenia in British Columbia using an administrative chronic disease registry and linked them with antipsychotic dispensations for the 30 days prior to the EHE. We compared 137 individuals who died during th

Heatwaves and Hardship: Shortcomings and Solutions for Enhancing the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program to Mitigate Extreme Heat and Energy Insecurity.

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) must adapt and evolve to keep pace with the challenges posed by climate change and increased economic strain. Urgent action is needed to improve LIHEAP to effectively address extreme heat and energy insecurity faced by low-income households and protect the health and well-being of disadvantaged groups spurred by climate change. In evaluating LIHEAP's shortcomings, we demonstrate that there is a substantial gap between program eligibility and enrollment, such that many households are not receiving this vital benefit or do so mainly when fac

Extreme heat preparedness and response implementation: a qualitative study of barriers, facilitators, and needs among local health jurisdictions in the United States.

Extreme heat events (EHEs) are the deadliest weather hazards in the United States (U.S.). Local health jurisdictions (LHJs) in the U.S. are frontline responders during EHEs and other public health emergencies. This study aims to clarify the factors influencing EHE preparedness and response implementation. From January to March 2023, we conducted and thematically analyzed four focus group discussions with 17 representatives from U.S. LHJs. The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research was used to guide the discussion. Participants described barriers, facilitators, and needs surrounding
