Electrophysiological and eye-movement abnormalities in children with the Bardet-Biedl syndrome.

We investigated 17 patients with clinical features of Bardet-Biedl syndrome by electroretinogram (ERG), visual-evoked potentials (VEP), and electro-oculographic (EOG) eye movement assessment. The ERGs were grossly abnormal in 16 cases. Pattern VEPs were generally well preserved, but showed a tendency to increase in latency and decrease in amplitude with age. These results confirm other reports that the retinopathy appears to be a progressive rod-cone dystrophy initially affecting mainly extramacular areas but involving the macula at later stages. Seven of 11 patients showed abnormalities of ei

Congenital hydrocephalus and eye abnormalities with severe developmental brain defects: Warburg's syndrome.

Five patients are reported with Warburg's syndrome, characterized by: (1) congenital hydrocephalus, (2) severe neonatal neurological dysfunction, (3) abnormalities of the anterior and posterior chambers of the eyes, (4) absence of known cause, and (5) severe developmental abnormalities of cortical gyration and architectonics. Fourteen similar published cases are reviewed. The syndrome can be diagnosed during life on the conjunction of the first four features listed. Evidence is adduced that this syndrome is a genetically determined condition with an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance and

Diagnosis and treatment progress of upper eyelid abnormalities in thyroid-eye disease.

Thyroid eye disease (TED) is the most common orbital disorder among adults. Among its many clinical features, upper eyelid abnormalities-namely, retraction, lid lag, and swelling-frequently cause functional and cosmetic problems. This article reviews current knowledge on diagnosing and treating these abnormalities. We examine a range of options, from basic supportive care and local injections (botulinum toxin A, hyaluronic acid, and triamcinolone) to systemic drugs (corticosteroids, Teprotumumab, and alpha-1 antagonists) and surgery (levator recession, blepharotomy, and orbital decompression).

Neurosensory abnormalities and stability of a mouse model of dry eye disease.

This study aimed to use a mouse model of dry eye disease (DED) induced by topical administration of benzalkonium chloride (BAK) and assess its stability and the presence of neurosensory abnormalities, including ocular pain. Eight-week-old C57BL6/6 N male mice were used in this study. Mice were treated with 10 μL of 0.2% BAK dissolved in artificial tears (AT), administered twice daily for 7 days. After one week, animals were randomized into two groups: one was administered with 0.2% BAK in AT once per day for 7 days, while the other was not further treated. Corneal epitheliopathy was quantified

Eye movements in frontotemporal dementia: Abnormalities of fixation, saccades and anti-saccades.

INTRODUCTION: Oculomotor function has not been systematically studied in frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and yet may offer a simple target to monitor disease activity. METHODS: We assessed fixation stability, smooth pursuit, pro-saccades, and anti-saccades using the Eyelink 1000-plus eye-tracker in 19 individuals with behavioral variant FTD (bvFTD) and 22 controls. Neuroanatomical correlates were assessed using a region of interest magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) analysis. RESULTS: Measures of fixation stability were impaired in the bvFTD group compared with controls. However, performance did

Quantitative sudomotor abnormalities in clinically isolated rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder.

BACKGROUND: Post-ganglionic sudomotor abnormalities are common in Parkinson's disease (PD), however data in clinically isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) are limited. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of sudomotor abnormalities in a cohort of patients with iRBD. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of patients seen in our autonomic clinic who underwent testing with the quantitative sudomotor axon reflex test (QSART). We identified three groups for comparison: 1.) iRBD, 2.) PD with RBD (PDwRBD) 3.) PD without RBD (PDwoRBD). RESULTS: PDwRBD (n = 27) patients demonstrated

Familial diffuse Lewy body disease, eye movement abnormalities, and distribution of pathology.

BACKGROUND: Familial diffuse Lewy body disease (DLBD) is rare and not yet associated with a defect in the synuclein gene. In the differential diagnosis of the parkinsonian syndromes, defects in vertical gaze tend to be identified with progressive supranuclear palsy. False-positive diagnosis of progressive supranuclear palsy can occur, and defects in vertical gaze have been reported in DLBD, although so far a pure vertical gaze palsy associated with pathological abnormalities in the substrate for vertical gaze has not been described. OBJECTIVES: To report the clinical and pathological findings

Influence of PAX6 gene dosage on development: overexpression causes severe eye abnormalities.

Aniridia in man and Small eye in mice are semidominant developmental disorders caused by mutations within the paired box gene PAX6. Whereas heterozygotes suffer from iris hypoplasia, homozygous mice lack eyes and nasal cavities and exhibit brain abnormalities. To investigate the role of gene dosage in more detail, we have generated yeast artificial chromosome transgenic mice carrying the human PAX6 locus. When crossed onto the Small eye background, the transgene rescues the mutant phenotype. Strikingly, mice carrying multiple copies on a wild-type background show specific developmental abnorma

Craniofacial abnormalities in homozygous Small eye (Sey/Sey) embryos and newborn mice.

The Small eye (Sey) gene in the mouse is lethal in the homozygous state. It is located on chromosome 2, is a mutation in the Pax-6 gene, and is genetically homologous with the human aniridia 2 (AN2) gene mutation. Numerous studies over the last few years, using genetic and molecular biological approaches, have investigated both the location of the gene as well as its possible mode of action. In the homozygous state, the primary defect appears to be limited to the failure of differentiation of the presumptive lens and nasal placodes. Such mice therefore display a characteristic phenotype; they

[Difficulty in eye opening following left hemispheric infarction-- causative lesion and pathophysiology of abnormalities of the eye and eyelids movements].

We reported a patient suffering from difficulty in eye opening following left hemispheric infarction. A 78-year-old left-handed woman with atrial fibrillation had an acute onset of right hemiparesis and difficulty in eye opening. On admission, mild disorientation, vertical gaze palsy, right homonymous hemianopia, anosognosia of right hemiparesis, agnosia of right side of the body and forced grasping reflex of the left hand were seen. She was aware of her difficulty in opening her eyelids. Vertical saccadic eye movements were absent to command but when her head was free to move, the vertical sa

Dystrophic hyaloid artery remnants and other abnormalities in a buphthalmic eye with retinoblastoma.

Partial persistence of the hyaloid artery unaccompanied by hyperplastic primary vitreous has not been previously reported in association with retinoblastoma. We describe an 18-month-old child with such a finding who had a retinoblastoma that was undifferentiated, extensively necrotic, heavily calcified, and completely filled the eyeball. The enucleated globe harbored a nonperfused, fossilized remnant of the hyaloid artery due to DNA/calcium deposition in the vascular wall. This structure inserted into a lenticular, extracapsular, fibrous plaque corresponding to a Mittendorf dot. The tumor had

Antisaccade eye movement abnormalities in Tourette syndrome: evidence for cortico-striatal network dysfunction?

Saccadic eye movements are rapid eye movements which act to redirect the eyes from one object of interest to another. Accurately and objectively measurable, their underlying neuroanatomical mechanisms have been extensively studied. The antisaccade task allows the study of the frontocortico-striatal network involved in the voluntary control of saccadic eye movements. In this task, the subject is instructed to inhibit a reflex eye movement towards a peripheral target light and, instead, to generate a movement in the equal and opposite direction. An error occurs when the subject fails to suppress

[Critical time for developmental eye abnormalities induced by retinoic acid in mouse fetuses].

To identify the critical time for developmental eye abnormalities, pregnant C 57 BL/6 NJcl mice were injected intraperitoneally once with 12.5 mg/kg of retinoic acid on days 7 (day-7 group), 8 (day-8 group), 9 (day-9 group), 10 (day-10 group), and 11 (day-11 group) of pregnancy. Each group consisted of 5 pregnant mice. The fetuses were observed grossly on day 18 of gestation, and the eyes were examined histologically in serial sections. Various gross malformations such as microphthalmos, cleft lip and palate, and central nervous system anomalies were observed in the day-7 group. However, micro

Tumorigenesis and eye abnormalities in transgenic mice expressing MSV-SV40 large T-antigen.

Transgenic mice which expressed SV40 large T-antigen under the control of the MSV enhancer and the SV40 promoter were generated. In animals containing an intact MSV enhancer, total lens cataracts and neuroectodermal brain tumors, originating in the pineal organ were observed. In contrast, 5' deletion of the MSV enhancer to a residual 53 bp resulted in a different spectrum of pathologies. Whilst lens cataracts still occurred, no brain tumors could be detected. Instead, fibrosarcomas and adenocarcinomas of the kidneys were induced. In addition, tumors of the endocrine pancreas were observed with

Eye movement abnormalities as a predictor of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome dementia complex.

Using infrared oculography, we recorded the eye movements in a group of patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), with or without the AIDS dementia complex (ADC). Our aim was to determine whether the severity of dementia could be correlated with abnormalities of eye movement and whether eye movement abnormalities could be detected prior to the onset of clinical dementia. Abnormalities of eye movement were present in seven of seven patients with mild, moderate, or severe ADC and in six of seven AIDS or asymptomatic human immunodeficiency virus-seropositive patients without clinic

Impaired Fellow Eye Motion Perception and Abnormal Binocular Function.

PURPOSE: Binocular discordance due to strabismus, anisometropia, or both may result in not only monocular visual acuity deficits, but also in motion perception deficits. We determined the prevalence of fellow-eye deficits in motion-defined form (MDF) perception, the ability to identify a two-dimensional (2D) shape defined by motion rather than luminance contrast. We also examined the following: the causative role of reduced visual acuity and binocularity, associations with clinical and sensory factors, and effectiveness of binocular amblyopia treatment in alleviating deficits. METHODS: Partic
