BACKGROUND: Up to 60% of patients with bipolar disorder (BD) have a history of traumatic events, which is associated with greater episode severity, higher risk of comorbidity and higher relapse rates. Trauma-focused treatment strategies for BD are thus necessary but studies are currently scarce. The aim of this study is to examine whether Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy focusing on adherence, insight, de-idealisation of manic symptoms, prodromal symptoms and mood stabilization can reduce episode severity and relapse rates and increase cognitive performance and func

BACKGROUND: Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) having a history of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) could be very difficult to treat with standard psychotherapeutic approaches. Some children diagnosed with ADHD may have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or have had experienced a significant traumatic event. Trauma and PTSD could exacerbate ADHD core symptoms and be a risk factor of poor outcome response.
OBJECTIVE: to report for the first time the history of a patient with ADHD and ACE successfully treated with an EMDR approach.
CONCLUSION: EMDR could be a

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction, alongside restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior and interests. Individuals on the autism spectrum exhibit increased psychopathological vulnerability, with a high incidence of comorbid conditions, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and trauma-related symptoms. Trauma-related symptoms appear to be highly prevalent in ASD, though they are frequently underestimated. Furthermore, autistic individuals face numerous risk factors tha

Background: Many patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to childhood trauma (Ch-PTSD) also suffer from comorbid personality pathology. Little is known about the effectiveness of treatments for Ch-PTSD in reducing the comorbid personality pathology. Schema Modes are an operationalization of personality pathology according to schema therapy and can be measured with the Schema Mode Inventory (SMI). Therefore, we evaluated the effects of two treatments for adult patients with Ch-PTSD on Schema Modes.Method: Participants (n = 114) of the Imagery Rescripting and Eye Movement Desensi

BACKGROUND: Exposure-based therapy is the treatment of choice for anxiety disorders, but many patients do not benefit sufficiently from it. Distressing images of threat related to the future or past may maintain the anxiety symptomatology or impede exposure therapy. An intervention that targets threat-related imagery is eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. The main goal of this multicenter randomized controlled trial is to investigate whether EMDR therapy plus exposure therapy, relative to supportive counseling plus exposure therapy, improves treatment efficacy, tolera

OBJECTIVE: Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is an established treatment for post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). Some patients diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) experience PTSD following choking or suffocation in the course of progressive loss of the ability to breathe. Although a loss of breathing functions in ALS is relatively common, there are currently no studies available on treatment for the fear of choking following advanced ALS.
METHODS: In this case study, we describe the positive effects of EMDR, an evidence-based form of trauma therapy, in a

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD) are highly co-occurring and evidence for the optimal ways of treating PTSD in SUD patients is mixed. Our aim was to compare three different PTSD treatments, each added simultaneously to SUD treatment, with SUD treatment alone in patients with co-occurring SUD-PTSD. These PTSD treatments were: Prolonged Exposure (PE), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Imagery Rescripting (ImRs).
DESIGN: A single-blind 4-arm randomized controlled trial with follow-up at 3 months.

Although the prevalence of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in infants and young children is similar as in older age groups, and PTSD intervention is as important in this age group, research on PTSD-treatment in infants is very scarce. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Storytelling is a trauma-focused treatment that is being used by clinicians for infants with PTSD-symptoms. The aim was to assess the feasibility, acceptability and initial indications of effectiveness of EMDR Storytelling for infants aged 3-24 months with PTSD-symptoms after medical procedure

The aim of the research is to investigate the effect of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) levels of individuals who can be defined as high-risk groups during the pandemic. Therefore, the online EMDR R-TEP Protocol was applied to a total of 154 individuals working with coronavirus patients, frontline professionals (Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics, Polices, Red Crescent), relatives of coronavirus patients, coronavirus patients, and relatives of someone who died from coronavirus and the PTSD symptom level before, after, and 1 month a

BACKGROUND: Methotrexate (MTX) intolerance in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) frequently leads to discontinuation due to anticipatory and associative gastrointestinal symptoms. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) has successfully been used in MTX intolerance, with lasting effects but frequently diminishing efficacy over time. BLAST (bi-lateral alternating stimulation tactile) wristbands utilize a similar process to EMDR. The aim of this study was to determine if utilization of BLAST wristbands could improve and prolong the effect of EMDR on patients with MTX intolerance.

BACKGROUND: Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidenced-based treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Forensic mental health services provide assessment and treatment of people with mental illness and a history of criminal offending, or those who are at risk of offending. Forensic mental health services include high, medium, and low-security inpatient settings as well as prison in-reach and community outpatient services. There is a high prevalence of PTSD in forensic settings and posttraumatic experiences can arise in people who violently offend in the cont

In this pilot study, a convenience sample of 24 chronic pain patients (17 with chronic fatigue syndrome/fibromyalgia) were randomized into WHEE treatment and wait-list control groups for 6 weeks. Assessments of depression, anxiety, and pain were completed before, during, and at 1 and 3 months after treatment. Wait-listed patients then received an identical course of WHEE and assessments. WHEE decreased anxiety ( P < .5) and depression ( P < .05) compared with the control group. The wait-list-turned-WHEE assessments demonstrated decreased pain severity ( P < .05) and depression ( P < .04) but n

OBJECTIVE: Autoimmune diseases are associated with psychological distress, resulting in greatly impaired quality of life. Tandem-Psychotherapy comprises trauma-focused psychotherapy with hypnosis and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), followed by supportive-expressive group therapy. The objective was to evaluate whether Tandem-Psychotherapy could reduce psychological distress and improve quality of life.
METHODS: In a case-control study, 45 patients were divided into two groups: 24 patients in the therapy group (TG) and 21 in the control group (CG). The autoimmune diagnoses

INTRODUCTION: EMDR 2.0, an innovative approach rooted in the conventional Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), has garnered attention due to its promising outcomes. The application of EMDR, whether it is EMDR or EMDR 2.0 protocol, in a group format, especially for conditions like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, will provide significant opportunities in terms of economic feasibility and accessibility, ultimately leading to widespread use. Building on the established effectiveness of EMDR 2.0 in individual applications, this study examines its impact in group settings. This prot

OBJECTIVE: Frontline mental health, emergency, law enforcement, and social workers have faced unprecedented psychological distress in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of the RCT (Randomized Controls Trial) study was to investigate the effectiveness of a Group EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy (Group Traumatic Episode Protocol-GTEP) in the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Moral Injury. The treatment focus is an early intervention, group trauma treatment, delivered remotely as video-conference psychotherapy (VCP). This early interv

Background: Psychological trauma has a strong negative impact on the onset, course and prognosis of substance use disorders (SUD). Few trauma-oriented treatment approaches have been trialed, but preliminary evidence exists of the efficacy of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy in improving clinical symptoms in SUD patients. Objective: To assess if EMDR therapy leads to: (1) reduced substance consumption; (2) an improvement in psychopathological and in trauma-related symptoms; and (3) an improvement in overall functioning. Our hypothesis is that the EMDR group will impr

Eye movement desensitization is a new and effective procedure for post-traumatic stress disorder that requires explanation. Reverse learning is a model developed in artificial neural networks as a theoretical explanation of rapid-eye-movement sleep. It demonstrates that an overloaded node within a network can be consolidated with a series of non-specific activations. Rapid-eye-movement sleep is suspected to have a memory consolidation function. Ponto-geniculo-occipital spikes, which occur in rapid-eye-movement sleep, are a candidate for such activations in the real brain. In cats, the phasic f

BACKGROUND: Adolescents exposed to natural disasters often develop post-traumatic stress disorder. Despite interest in group-based trauma therapies, the feasibility of the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Integrative Group Treatment Protocol among disaster-affected adolescents remains underexplored. This study aimed to evaluate how symptom severity and psychological resilience influence adolescents' perceptions of the feasibility of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Integrative Group Treatment Protocol. It also sought to identify key barriers and facilitators affecting

This case series introduces the desensitization of triggers and urge reprocessing (DeTUR), as a promising adjunctive therapy in addition to comprehensive treatment package for pathological gambling. This addiction protocol of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing was delivered to four male inpatients admitted to a 10-week inpatient program for pathological gambling. The therapist gave three 60-min weekly sessions of the DeTUR using bilateral stimulation (horizontal eye movements or alternative tactile stimuli) focusing on the hierarchy of triggering situations and the urge to initiate
