Does wearing swimming goggles affect corneal morphology in keratoconic eyes?

PURPOSE: A significant transient increase in intraocular pressure in individuals wearing swimming goggles has been demonstrated in previous studies. These findings suggested that wearing swimming goggles could represent a significant risk factor for worsening of corneal parameters in patients with keratoconus who swim regularly. The aim of this study was to investigate corneal parameters in patients with keratoconus after wearing swimming goggles. METHODS: Comprehensive ocular examinations were performed on 74 eyes of 37 patients with keratoconus. Measurements of the corneal front keratometry

Towards standardization of UV eye protection: what can be learned from photodermatology?

While knowledge about standardization of skin protection against ultraviolet radiation (UVR) has progressed over the past few decades, there is no uniform and generally accepted standardized measurement for UV eye protection. The literature provides solid evidence that UV can induce considerable damage to structures of the eye. As well as damaging the eyelids and periorbital skin, chronic UV exposure may also affect the conjunctiva and lens. Clinically, this damage can manifest as skin cancer and premature skin ageing as well as the development of pterygia and premature cortical cataracts. Mod

Evaluation of eye protection filters for use with dental curing and bleaching lamps.

Exposure to intense radiation sources in a dental clinic necessitates the use of eye protective filters to avoid blue-light photochemical retinal hazard. We have investigated the filtering quality and assessed whether the filters protect sufficiently against retinal hazards throughout the workday. Visible light transmittance of 18 protective filters was measured. These products consisted of spectacles, stationary lamp shields, and a hand-held shield intended for use in dental clinics. Nine of the 18 tested filters had adequate filtering capacity according to today's lamp technology and exposur

[Safety handles for ski sticks to prevent eye, hand and stomach injuries (author's transl)].

Eye injuries caused by ski stick handles are rare but serious. The material and shape of the handle can be designed to prevent serious injury without adversely affecting function. Even at winter temperatures polyurethane remains moderately malleable and shock-absorbent; it is light, and is a poor heat conductor, so that the hands do not get cold quickly. The end of the handle is 8 cm in diameter; attached to this is an adjustable loop which fits around the hand. The loop opens on impact. It is thus impossible for the orbit to sustain injury and there is less danger to other injury-prone region

Sunglass Filter Transmission and Its Operational Effect in Solar Protection for Civilian Pilots.

INTRODUCTION: The ocular effects of excess solar radiation exposure are well documented. Recent evidence suggests that ocular ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure to professional pilots may fall outside international guideline limits unless eye protection is used. Nonprescription sunglasses should be manufactured to meet either international or national standards. The mean increase in UVR and blue light hazards at altitude has been quantified and the aim of this research was to assess the effectiveness of typical pilot sunglasses in reducing UVR and blue light hazard exposure in flight. Safety of neonatal phototherapy lamp exposure.

A routine review of light exposure within a neonatal intensive care unit is described following the introduction of a new model of neonatal phototherapy lamp. Spectral measurements were undertaken using a Bentham Dmc150 spectroradiometer system. Safety assessments were undertaken based on likely exposure of parents at the cot side, neonates in adjacent cots and the effectiveness of eye protection for neonates with direct phototherapy. An aphakic eye response was used for assessment of neonatal risk and the blue-light response for estimation of adult exposure using current ICNIRP guidelines. Su

An investigation of eye lens dose of stereotactic radiosurgery for trigeminal neuralgia using Leksell Gamma Knife model C.

OBJECT: The authors conducted a study to assess the eye lens dosimetry in trigeminal neuralgia (TN) treatment when using the Leksell Gamma Knife model C. METHODS: Phantom studies were used to measure the maximal dose reaching the eye lens with and without eye shielding. Six consecutive patients with TN were evaluated for Gamma Knife surgery (GKS). The maximum prescribed dose of 80 Gy was delivered with a single shot using the 4-mm collimator helmet. High-sensitivity thermoluminescence dosimeter chips (TLDCs) were used to measure the dosimetry. In vitro, the Leksell GammaPlan (LGP) system pred

A protective eye shield for prevention of media opacities during small animal ocular imaging.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT), scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO) and other non-invasive imaging techniques are increasingly used in eye research to document disease-related changes in rodent eyes. Corneal dehydration is a major contributor to the formation of ocular opacities that can limit the repeated application of these techniques to individual animals. General anesthesia is usually required for imaging, which is accompanied by the loss of the blink reflex. As a consequence, the tear film cannot be maintained, drying occurs and the cornea becomes dehydrated. Without supplemental hyd

Eye-mask and earplugs as sleep aid on glucose metabolism in sleep-deprived pregnancy: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes is associated with short sleep duration. Both conditions are common in pregnancy, especially in later pregnancy. Eye mask and earplugs when used at home in sleep-deprived pregnancy has been shown to extend nocturnal sleep. Data is sparse on the effect of sleep aids on glucose metabolism through extending sleep. We sought to evaluate use of eye-mask and earplugs on fasting and 2-hour plasma glucose levels at routine oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and on actigraph-derived night sleep duration in women with sleep-deprived pregnancy. METHODS: A randomized tria

Evaluation of helmet and goggle designs by modeling non-penetrating projectile impacts.

Despite the progress in developing personal combat-protective gear, eye and brain injuries are still widely common and carry fatal or long-term repercussions. The complex nature of the cranial tissues suggests that simple methods (e.g. crash-dummies) for testing the effectiveness of personal protective gear against non-penetrating impacts are both expensive and ineffective, and there are ethical issues in using animal or cadavers. The present work presents a versatile testing framework for quantitatively evaluating protective performances of head and eye combat-protective gear, against non-pen

Comparing the Efficacy of Earplugs and Eye Masks on Pain and Sleep Quality in Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit Patients: A Three-Arm Randomised Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases are among the most common and leading causes of death worldwide. Surgical methods such as coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) provide successful results in this process. Patients who are faced with these disturbing life-threatening experiences try to cope with many problems until the discharge process. The most common of these problems in the postoperative period is pain and insomnia. In the literature, there have been studies to determine the effect of eye mask and earplug on sleep and pain level; however, there are no studies examining the superior

Impact of earplugs and eye mask on sleep in critically ill patients: a prospective randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Poor sleep is common in intensive care unit (ICU) patients, where environmental factors contribute to reduce and fragment sleep. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of earplugs and eye mask on sleep architecture in ICU patients. METHODS: A single-center randomized controlled trial of 64 ICU patients was conducted from July 2012 to December 2013. Patients were randomly assigned to sleep with or without earplugs and an eye mask from inclusion until ICU discharge. Polysomnography was performed on the first day and night following inclusion. The primary outcome was

Military Combat Eye Protection uptake of UK service personnel on Operation TORAL in Afghanistan.

INTRODUCTION: Military Combat Eye Protection (CEP) is a form of personal protective equipment designed to protect the eyes and surrounding structures. A review of 67 586 US and UK personnel wounded during Iraq and Afghanistan demonstrated that eye injuries were present in 8% of survivors or those who died of wounds. CEP was first introduced to UK military personnel in Iraq during 2006 and has been shown to reduce both the incidence and severity of eye injury, with the current CEP issued as part of the VIRTUS body armour and load carriage system. METHOD: To assess user perception and experienc
