Eye Tracking During Visual Paired-Comparison Tasks: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Diagnostic Test Accuracy for Detecting Cognitive Decline.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) progress silently, making early diagnosis challenging, especially in less educated populations. The visual paired comparison (VPC) task, utilizing eye-tracking movement (ETM) technology, offers a promising alternative for early detection of memory decline. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of the VPC task, utilizing ETM as a tool for assessing age-related cognitive changes. METHODS: A comprehensive search across five databases and grey literature focused on healthy and impaired memory

An examination of the effects of eye-tracking on behavior in psychology experiments.

Eye-tracking is emerging as a tool for researchers to better understand cognition and behavior. However, it is possible that experiment participants adjust their behavior when they know their eyes are being tracked. This potential change would be considered a type of Hawthorne effect, in which participants alter their behavior in response to being watched and could potentially compromise the outcomes and conclusions of experimental studies that use eye tracking. We examined whether eye-tracking produced Hawthorne effects in six commonly used psychological scales and five behavioral tasks. The

A portable and efficient dementia screening tool using eye tracking machine learning and virtual reality.

Dementia represents a significant global health challenge, with early screening during the preclinical stage being crucial for effective management. Traditional diagnostic biomarkers for Alzheimer's Disease, the most common form of dementia, are limited by cost and invasiveness. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a precursor to dementia, is currently identified through neuropsychological tests like the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), which are not suitable for large-scale screening. Eye-tracking technology, capturing and quantifying eye movements related to cognitive behavior, has emerged

Beyond seizures: eye tracking evidence of cognitive dysfunction in epilepsy - A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunction is a common and disabling feature of epilepsy, affecting attention, memory, executive function, and socioemotional processing. Conventional neuropsychological assessments may lack sensitivity to subtle deficits and are influenced by educational and linguistic factors. Eye tracking provides high-temporal-resolution quantification of oculomotor behavior linked to distributed cognitive networks; however, its relationship to traditional neuropsychological performance in epilepsy has not been systematically synthesized. METHODS: This systematic review followed PRI

Eye-Tracking Analysis in Surface-Guided Radiation Therapy Positioning: A Comparative Study of Experienced and Novice Radiation Therapists.

The patient setup using the surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT) system differs from conventional surface marker procedures. Owing to the abundance of three-dimensional information, there may be operator variability in where to focus during the patient setup. This study aimed to clarify the differences between expert and novice operators in SGRT positioning for head and neck cases by tracking their eye movements, thereby providing data for developing efficient patient setup procedures. Six radiation therapists set up a simulated patient on the SGRT system while recording eye movements on th

Understanding the encoding of object locations in small-scale spaces during free exploration using eye tracking.

Navigation is instrumental to daily life and is often used to encode and locate objects, such as keys in one's house. Yet, little is known about how navigation works in more ecologically valid situations such as finding objects within a room. Specifically, it is not clear how vision vs. body movements contribute differentially to spatial memory in such small-scale spaces. In the current study, participants encoded object locations by viewing them while standing (stationary condition) or by additionally being guided by the experimenter while blindfolded (walking condition) after viewing the obj

Impact of mask use on face recognition: an eye-tracking study.

We examined how mask use affects performance and eye movements in face recognition and whether strategy change reflected in eye movements is associated with performance change. Eighty-eight participants performed face recognition with masked faces either during learning only, during recognition only, or during both learning and recognition. As compared with the baseline condition where faces were unmasked during both learning and recognition, participants had impaired performance in all three scenarios, with larger impairment when mask conditions during learning and recognition did not match.

Reading performance in children with ADHD: an eye-tracking study.

Reading disabilities have a profound impact on the academic performance and achievement of children. Although oculomotor pattern abnormalities during reading in children with dyslexia are well known, those in individuals with attention deficit and hyperactive disorders (ADHD) - who also frequently exhibit a reading impairment - remain largely undetermined. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the peculiarities of oculomotor pattern abnormalities during a reading task. An eye-tracker was used to record eye movements in four distinct groups of children with neurodevelopmental disor

A review of studies exploring fetal alcohol spectrum disorders through eye tracking measures.

The widespread cognitive and cerebral consequences of prenatal alcohol exposure have been established during the last decades, through the exploration of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) using neuropsychological and neuroscience tools. This research field has recently benefited from the emergence of innovative measures, among which eye tracking, allowing a precise measure of the eye movements indexing a large range of cognitive functions. We propose a comprehensive review, based on PRISMA guidelines, of the eye tracking studies performed in populations with FASD. Studies were selected f

OPT-former: A transformer-based approach for eye motion tracking in ocular proton therapy.

BACKGROUND: Ocular proton therapy (OPT) is the main conservative treatment option for ocular melanoma but requires precise gaze stability monitoring during irradiation. In current clinical workflows at the Centro Nazionale di Adroterapia Oncologica (CNAO) in Pavia, this task is performed manually by trained operators, which can introduce reaction delays and human error. PURPOSE: To propose and assess the performance of OPT-former, a transformer-based method for real-time segmentation of the iris and pupil, designed for integration into automated safety interlock systems. METHODS: The model,

Eye-tracking and behavioral measures of mind-wandering relate to depressive symptoms in children: a preliminary study.

Elevated levels of mind-wandering in adults have been associated with both negative mood and depressive symptoms. Eye-tracking studies have further identified relationships between pupil dilation and mind-wandering as well as depression in adults. Although children tend to mind wander at similar rates as adults and adolescents, less is known about how both mind-wandering and pupillometry during cognitive tasks relate to depressive symptoms in children. In this preliminary study, we tested associations between mind-wandering, phasic and tonic pupillary responses, and depression symptoms in sixt

A scoping review of eye tracking metrics used to assess visuomotor behaviours of upper limb prosthesis users.

Advanced upper limb prostheses aim to restore coordinated hand and arm function. However, this objective can be difficult to quantify as coordinated movements require an intact visuomotor system. Eye tracking has recently been applied to study the visuomotor behaviours of upper limb prosthesis users by enabling the calculation of eye movement metrics. This scoping review aims to characterize the visuomotor behaviours of upper limb prosthesis users as described by eye tracking metrics, to summarize the eye tracking metrics used to describe prosthetic behaviour, and to identify gaps in the liter

Facial emotion recognition processes according to schizotypal personality traits: An eye-tracking study.

Facial emotion recognition has been shown to be impaired among patients with schizophrenia and, to a lesser extent, among individuals with high levels of schizotypal personality traits. However, aspects of gaze behavior during facial emotion recognition among the latter are still unclear. This study therefore investigated the relations between eye movements and facial emotion recognition among nonclinical individuals with schizotypal personality traits. A total of 83 nonclinical participants completed the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) and performed a facial emotion recognition ta

REFLACX, a dataset of reports and eye-tracking data for localization of abnormalities in chest x-rays.

Deep learning has shown recent success in classifying anomalies in chest x-rays, but datasets are still small compared to natural image datasets. Supervision of abnormality localization has been shown to improve trained models, partially compensating for dataset sizes. However, explicitly labeling these anomalies requires an expert and is very time-consuming. We propose a potentially scalable method for collecting implicit localization data using an eye tracker to capture gaze locations and a microphone to capture a dictation of a report, imitating the setup of a reading room. The resulting RE

Mobile Eye-Tracking Data Analysis Using Object Detection via YOLO v4.

Remote eye tracking has become an important tool for the online analysis of learning processes. Mobile eye trackers can even extend the range of opportunities (in comparison to stationary eye trackers) to real settings, such as classrooms or experimental lab courses. However, the complex and sometimes manual analysis of mobile eye-tracking data often hinders the realization of extensive studies, as this is a very time-consuming process and usually not feasible for real-world situations in which participants move or manipulate objects. In this work, we explore the opportunities to use object re
