Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) of the eyelid: Clinicopathologic features, immunohistochemical findings and review of literature.

Sweat gland neoplasms are rare adnexal tumors that pose a diagnostic challenge for both, ophthalmologists and pathologists. Endocrine, mucin producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC), considered to be analogous to the solid papillary mammary carcinoma is one such tumor. It usually affects elderly, is more frequent in women and has a predilection for skin of the eyelid. Although it has an indolent clinical course, EMPSGC is believed to be a precursor of the invasive mucinous carcinoma and has a potential for local recurrence. We report a series of 10 biopsy-proven EMPSGCs with their immunohistoc

Atypical and giant proliferating pilomatrixoma of the eyelid: a clinicopathological report.

BACKGROUND: Pilomatrixoma is an uncommon benign skin neoplasm originating from the hair follicle. Here, we report a rare case of giant and atypical proliferating pilomatrixoma affecting the eyelid. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old male presented with a solitary, giant mass on his left upper eyelid, which had recently shown progressive enlargement. The lesion appeared well-circumscribed with a firm consistency, and measuring 7 × 10 cm. Orbital computed tomography scan revealed no intraorbital extension. The lesion was surgically excised. Histopathological examination identified the mass as an

Conjunctival metastasis as the presenting sign for stage IV lung cancer.

PURPOSE: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in North America. It is often diagnosed at an advanced stage, lending to a poor prognosis. Symptoms of lung cancer often do not present until more advanced stages. Common sites of lung cancer metastasis are the bones, liver, and brain. The etiology of eye masses ranges from the relatively benign to those with tremendous risk of morbidity, and the differentiation is often difficult clinically. This case highlights the importance of more detailed workup, including biopsy, to determine the exact nature of the lesion. CASE REPORT:

[Meibomian gland adenocarcinoma with regional lymph node metastasis].

Meibomian gland carcinoma of the eyelid is a common neoplasm which clinically simulates a benign condition of chalazion. Although growing slowly, metastasis to regional lymph nodes is frequent, at a rate of 17-28% in this country. Eleven (11) cases of Meibomian gland carcinoma with regional lymph node metastasis are reported, and the therapeutic modalities have been tailored to suit the individual cases, including full-thickness local excision, orbital exenteration, radical cervical dissection, and superficial parotidectomy.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma: a cutaneous neoplasm analogous to solid papillary carcinoma of breast.

We describe two cases of a distinctive in situ and invasive cutaneous adnexal neoplasm occurring in the eyelid. Mucinous carcinoma represented the invasive portion of the tumor in one case, whereas the other infiltrated in small solid nests. The in situ component is identical to the recently described solid papillary carcinoma of the breast (endocrine ductal carcinoma in situ). Both tumors produced intra- and extracellular mucin, exhibited endocrine differentiation by immunohistochemistry and ultrastructural analysis, and were positive for estrogen and progesterone receptors.

Mucin-producing Malignant Tumor of Lower Eyelid Presenting in a 14-year-old Patient.

Malignancies of the ocular adnexa are rare, aggressive tumors with significant potential for local recurrence and metastases. Although basal cell carcinoma remains the most common malignancy of the eyelid, encompassing more than 90 percent of all periocular cancers, several other malignant neoplasms have been reported. Malignant ocular adnexal neoplasms are most commonly of sweat gland origin and include hidradenocarcinoma, mucinous eccrine adenocarcinoma, and apocrine adenocarcinoma of the glands of Moll. The different ocular adnexal adenocarcinomas share many of the same characteristics with

Primary mucinous carcinoma of the skin arising from the upper eyelid: A case report and literature review.

Primary mucinous carcinoma of the skin (PMCS) is a rare malignant neoplasm of the sweat glands that has an incidence of 1 per 150,000 population. Because of the lack of typical characteristics, it is often misdiagnosed as an epidermoid cyst, pilomatrixoma, or chalazion before resection, with subsequent enucleation performed unintentionally. We present a case of a 51-year-old patient with PMCS in the upper eyelid that was successfully treated at our hospital. Additionally, we reviewed the literature and discussed the diagnosis, primary and adjuvant therapy, and follow-up procedure.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) laser third eyelid excision: surgical description and report of 7 cases.

PURPOSE: To describe a novel technique for third eyelid (TEL) excision using a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective. ANIMALS STUDIED: The procedure was performed on six canine patients and one feline patient. METHODS: The laser was set to 6 Watts (W) of power and a linear continuous setting. Forceps were used to elevate the TEL and, with a protective shield covering the cornea, the base was cut and cauterized simultaneously. Minimal to no hemorrhage was observed, and the conjunctiva was left to heal by second intention. RESULTS: Seven patients underwent unilateral surgical

Schöpf-Schulz-Passarge syndrome: further delineation of the phenotype and genetic considerations.

Schöpf-Schulz-Passarge syndrome is a rare ectodermal dysplasia, characterized chiefly by multiple eyelid apocrine hidrocystomas, palmo-plantar keratoderma, hypodontia, hypotrichosis and nail dystrophy. The clinical spectrum and the most likely inheritance pattern(s) have not yet been completely defined. We report here on two, unrelated patients presenting with additional, previously unreported features, including hypoplastic nipples and optic atrophy. Both individuals were born to consanguineous parents, and one also has affected siblings. A literature review identified 23 additional cases. Mu

Sebaceous Carcinoma: Clinicopathologic Analysis of 29 Cases in a Tertiary Hospital in Korea.

Sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is a neoplasm derived from the adnexal epithelium of the sebaceous glands, and most studies on this neoplasm have been conducted in Caucasians. We retrospectively reviewed the records of 29 patients with SC (16 extraocular and 13 ocular lesions) who were diagnosed from 2001 to 2014 to analyze the clinical and histopathological features of SC in the Korean population. Sixteen of the patients were women and 13 were men. There was an equal sex distribution for extraocular lesions, and a female predilection (M:F = 1:1.6) for ocular lesions. The mean ages at presentation of

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma: report of two cases of an under-recognized malignant neoplasm and review of the literature.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a rare low-grade sweat gland carcinoma with a strong predilection to the eyelid region. It is histologically analogous to endocrine ductal carcinoma/solid papillary carcinoma of the breast and is characterized by a multinodular solid cystic mucinous tumor with immunoreactivity to neuroendocrine markers. Only 20 cases of this unusual tumor have been reported. We present the clinical and histopathologic findings of 2 new cases of EMPSGC and review the relevant literature. The histological differential diagnosis is discussed and attentio

Histiocytoid eccrine sweat gland carcinoma of the eyelid: report of a case.

This report describes the 12th documented case of histiocytoid, diffuse or signet-ring cell eccrine sweat gland carcinoma of the eyelid, a rare neoplasm that characteristically affects older men and mimics distant metastasis. Clinically, the patient was thought to have a colonic metastasis. Histologically, the neoplasm comprised sheets and cords of polygonal, eosinophilic cells, with dispersed larger, rounded single cells resembling histiocytes, and cells with cytoplasmic lumina or a signet-ring appearance. Occasional duct formation was also seen. The features were reminiscent of both the hist

Squamoid Eccrine Ductal Carcinoma of the Eyelid: Clinicopathologic Correlation of a Case.

Squamoid eccrine ductal carcinoma (SEDC) is a rare cutaneous neoplasm that often manifests as a plaque or nodule in sun-exposed areas of older patients. Herein, the authors report the first case of SEDC in the eyelid. A 76-year-old man presented with a 2.5 × 1.5 mm area of left upper eyelid erythema, thickening, ulceration, and scaling with madarosis superotemporally just above the lash line. Full-thickness wedge biopsy demonstrated irregular epithelial tubules with nuclear atypia and focal squamous differentiation, consistent with SEDC. The patient underwent Mohs resection and has had no recu

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma.

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a rare, low-grade, cutaneous neoplasm that may be associated with invasive mucinous carcinoma. Tumors typically present as slow-growing, flesh-colored, nonspecific papules or nodules that favor the eyelids in older individuals. Histologic examination usually reveals basaloid nodules composed of cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm, with focal mucin production and occasional glandular structures. Definitive diagnosis requires immunohistochemical staining. Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinomas have been noted to stain positively

Idiopathic granulomatous disease with ocular adnexal and cutaneous involvement in a dog.

Idiopathic granulomatous disease was the cause of bilateral eyelid masses and additional ocular adnexal disease in a dog. Histologically similar granulomas developed concurrently in distant sites including the limbs, prepuce, and testicles. Periodic resolution and redevelopment of the masses were observed and were unaffected by corticosteroid treatments. Rapid diminution of some of the masses was found after treatment with polyethylene glycol modified L-asparaginase, but poor client compliance and episodes of spontaneous resolution of some of the masses made it difficult to accurately assess e

Primary signet ring cell carcinoma of the eyelid: report of a case demonstrating further analogy to lobular carcinoma of the breast with a literature review.

Primary signet ring cell carcinoma of the eyelid is a rare neoplasm with less than ten cases described. This report details another case, which shows further parallels to lobular carcinoma of the breast, and reviews the literature on this subject. A 73-year-old white female presented with diffuse induration of her left eyelids. Histopathology revealed a delicate infiltrate of epithelial cells scattered throughout the lid stroma in a non-destructive pattern. The cells were relatively monomorphous and showed only mild atypia and rare mitotic figures. Many had slightly granular amphophilic cytopl

Eyelid atypical fibroxanthoma: a rare challenging entity.

Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is a rare neoplasm, with a limited number of cases reported in the periocular region. In this case report, we detail a 63-year-old woman who presented with a polypoid, exophytic lesion on her right upper eyelid that had been progressing for a year. The lesion was meticulously excised with security margins and reconstructed using a glabellar flap. Following a thorough microscopic and immunohistochemical analysis, AFX was diagnosed. Despite its sometimes clinical and histological benign appearance, AFX is classified as a malignant neoplasm; however, it carries an exc

Sinonasal (Schneiderian) papilloma of the lacrimal sac.

Sinonasal papillomas, also known as Schneiderian papillomas, are benign but infiltrative epithelial neoplasms that arise from ectodermally derived pseudostratified ciliated (or Schneiderian) epithelium that lines the sinonasal tract and nasal cavity. We describe a rare case of a sinonasal papilloma confined to the lacrimal duct and sac in a 45-year-old man who presented with 10 months of right-sided epiphora and swelling of his medial right lower eyelid. He was found to have a 10 × 10 mm area of distension near the right lacrimal sac and underwent an external dacryocystorhinostomy. A computed

Cutaneous myxomas. A major component of the complex of myxomas, spotty pigmentation, and endocrine overactivity.

Cutaneous myxoma(s) occurred in 22 (54%) of 41 patients with the complex of myxomas, spotty pigmentation, and endocrine overactivity. Of the 16 patients who had cardiac myxoma(s), the cutaneous tumor(s) was (were) detected in 13 (81%) of them prior to diagnosis of the cardiac neoplasm. Thus, the cutaneous tumor may herald a potentially fatal cardiac neoplasm (and other important conditions as well). Clinical features of the lesion were as follows: early appearance (mean age, 18 years); multicentricity (71% of patients); small size (usually less than 1 cm in diameter); widespread distribution b

[Mucinous sweat gland carcinoma of the eyelid].

A 52-year-old patient presented with a painless nodular tumor of the upper left eyelid, which was first noticed 6 months prior to the initial presentation. The histopathological and immunohistochemical examination of the excised tumor revealed a mucinous sweat gland carcinoma. This very rare neoplasm (1/150,000 skin lesions) is located within the ocular adnexa in 40 % of cases. If completely excised the prognosis is usually good; however, due to the histological similarity to metastases of an adenocarcinoma, a hitherto unknown primary tumor at another site should be excluded.
