Symmetries in a standardized set of emotional facial expressions (JACFEE).

OBJECTIVE: To investigate possible asymmetry in a widely used set of standardized emotional facial expressions (JACFEE, Japanese and Caucasian Facial Expressions of Emotion). METHOD: Chimeric pictures with either two left (LL) or two right (RR) halves of the emotional face were produced from the original set and presented to healthy subjects who rated their intensity. RESULTS: With the exception of "happiness", for all other emotions (sadness, disgust, anger, fear and surprise) LL and RR composites were given comparable intensities, speaking for high symmetry in the faces. CONCLUSIONS: The

Early processing of the six basic facial emotional expressions.

Facial emotions represent an important part of non-verbal communication used in everyday life. Recent studies on emotional processing have implicated differing brain regions for different emotions, but little has been determined on the timing of this processing. Here we presented a large number of unfamiliar faces expressing the six basic emotions, plus neutral faces, to 26 young adults while recording event-related potentials (ERPs). Subjects were naive with respect to the specific questions investigated; it was an implicit emotional task. ERPs showed global effects of emotion from 90 ms (P1)

Cynical hostility and the accuracy of decoding facial expressions of emotions.

To examine the relation between cynical hostility and the accuracy of decoding facial expressions of emotions, 101 young adult participants completed the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale and Ekman's Pictures of Facial Affect. Results revealed that higher hostility scores were correlated with a greater number of errors in decoding facial expressions of emotions. Hostile individuals were more likely than nonhostile individuals to label inaccurately facial expressions of "disgust" as being "anger" and of "happiness" as being "neutral." Results also revealed that males were more likely than females to

[Relationship between anxiety and physical traits of facial expressions].

The purpose of this study is to investigate correlations between anxiety and physical traits of facial expressions. In this study, subjects were divided into two groups on the basis of MAS (manifest anxiety scale), and were taken pictures under three different conditions. In Analysis I, we examined how facial expressions differ between high-anxiety and low-anxiety groups. The results showed that facial expressions differed between two groups especially in mouth, left half of the face, and asymmetry of the face. In Experiment I and II, we investigated whether human beings could identify one's a

Lateralization for the expression and perception of facial emotion as a function of age.

In order to test the hypothesis of right hemisphere changes with age, this study examined lateralization for facial emotion in young, middle-aged, and older women (N = 90). For expression, subjects were photographed while posing positive and negative emotions. Composite photographs were created and rated for intensity. For perception, subjects were required to make intensity judgements about emotional chimeric faces. Overall, subjects demonstrated significant left-sided facial asymmetry for expression and significant left hemispace biases for perception. The findings for facial expression were

Hemispheric mechanisms controlling voluntary and spontaneous facial expressions.

The capacity of each disconnected cerebral hemisphere to control a variety of facial postures was examined in three split-brain patients. The dynamics of facial posturing were analyzed in 30-msec optical disc frames that were generated off videotape recordings of each patient's response to lateralized stimuli. The results revealed that commands presented to the left hemisphere effecting postures of the lower facial muscles showed a marked asymmetry, with the right side of the face sometimes responding up to 180 msec before the left side of the face. Commands presented to the right hemisphere e

Relationship between toll-like receptor expression in the distal facial nerve and facial nerve recovery after injury.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine whether toll-like receptor expression patterns differ in the distal facial nerve during recovery after crushing and cutting injuries. METHODS: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent crushing or cutting injury of the unilateral facial nerve. Their whisker movement and blink reflex were examined. Western blotting was performed with the normal nerve on the left side and the damaged nerve on the right side, four days, 14 days, and 3 months after injury. RESULTS: The scores of whisker movements and blink reflex in the crushing group showed improvements,

Near-Field Radio-Frequency for Real-Time Facial Expression Recognition.

The advent of smart wearable computing platforms in the form of VR/AR enhanced devices has unlocked new strides in mental wellness (through tele-health counseling), personalized spatial computing, and interactive content consumption. However, most current devices rely upon vision and audio based user inputs that pose privacy risks and often consume high amounts of power. In this work, we introduce a novel near-field radio-frequency (NFRF) based facial expression recognition (FER) system that is personal, privacy-respecting, and may be extended to commercially available wearable form-factors. Acute Pain Recognition from Facial Expression Videos using Vision Transformers.

Pain assessment is significant for patients and clinicians in diagnosis and treatment injuries and disease. It could facilitate a patient's treatment process by monitoring patients' pain levels in an accurate and regular manner. Automated detection of pain from facial expressions is a useful technique to assess pain of patients with communication disabilities. In this study, video vision transformers (ViViT) enhanced for pain recognition tasks are presented to capture spatio-temporal, facial information relevant to estimating the binary classification of pain and, thus, to provide valuable ins

Expression of aquaporin 2 following facial nerve crush in rats.

CONCLUSION: We demonstrated an early increase in aquaporin 2 (AQP2) expression in a motor nerve (extratemporal facial nerve, FN) following acute peripheral compression (crush), concomitant to effective development of motor dysfunction (facial palsy). The early increase in AQP2 expression that occurred concomitantly with the appearance of a deficit in a peripheral motor nerve suggests that this protein is involved in the physiological events associated with post-injury edema, similar to the already demonstrated behavior of AQP4 in the central nervous system (CNS). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this st

Social anxiety predicts unconsciously provoked emotional responses to facial expression.

Previous psychometric studies using a visual search task suggested that interpersonal fear in individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) may be processed by unconscious preattentive mechanisms. However, little is known about relationships between social anxiety and preattentive emotional responses. We explored whether social anxiety is associated with preattentive emotional responses to facial expression. Groups with high and low social anxiety were selected from 125 healthy volunteers according to scores on the Social Phobia Inventory. Fearful and happy faces were presented subliminally u

Altered electrodermal response to facial expression after closed head injury.

UNLABELLED: The objective was to determine whether diffuse damage to orbital and ventromedial regions of the prefrontal cortex usually associated with moderate-to-severe closed head injury (CHI) would affect the ability to perceive and respond to socially relevant information. METHODS: Participants with CHI and age-matched non-injured controls were presented with faces that varied with respect to emotional expression while electrodermal activity (EDA) was monitored. Cognitive and general adaptive functioning was also assessed. RESULTS: CHI was associated with a failure to increase EDA in res

Interhemispheric asymmetry in facial expression recognition: relationship to field-dependence.

Sixty college students, 30 males and 30 females, with a well defined cognitive style (measured by means of three tests), carried out a recognition task of six unambiguous facial expressions which were unilaterally presented in a tachistoscopic condition. A significant left visual field superiority was present for the field independenct subjects; a low but significant right visual field superiority was present for the field dependent subjects. No differences were found between the sexes.

Fibroblast morphology, growth rate and gene expression in facial melasma.

BACKGROUND: In addition to melanocytic hyperfunction, changes are observed in the upper dermis of melasma, and fibroblasts play a central role in collagen synthesis and pigmentation induction. OBJECTIVE: To explore the morphology, growth rate, and gene expression profile of fibroblasts from the skin with melasma in comparison to fibroblasts from the adjacent healthy skin. METHODS: Ten women with facial melasma were biopsied (lesion and adjacent healthy skin), and the fragments were processed for fibroblast culture. Samples from five participants were seeded to evaluate growth (days 2, 5 and

Recognition of facial emotional expression in amnestic mild cognitive impairment.

We examined whether recognition of facial emotional expression would be affected in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). A total of 50 elderly persons met the initial inclusion criteria; 10 were subsequently excluded (Geriatric Depression Score > 5). 22 subjects were classified with aMCI based on published criteria (single domain aMCI [SD-aMCI], n = 10; multiple domain aMCI [MD-aMCI], n = 12); 18 subjects were cognitively normal. All underwent standard neurological and neuropsychological evaluations as well as tests of facial emotion recognition (FER) and famous faces identification (FFI

Reduction of oligodendrocyte myelin glycoprotein expression following facial nerve transection.

Oligodendrocyte myelin glycoprotein (OMgp) has been thought to be expressed in the oligodendrocytes and inhibit the regeneration of the nerves by binding to the Nogo receptor expressed in neurons in the central nervous system (CNS). However, OMgp is expressed in the CNS in the neurons as well as oligodendrocytes. In order to help understanding the physiological role of neuronal OMgp, we examined the change of OMgp expression in the facial nucleus after the facial nerve transection. Real-time RT-PCR and Western blot analysis showed a down-regulation of OMgp expression in the facial nucleus 5-7

Neonatal pain facial expression: evaluating the primal face of pain.

The primal face of pain (PFP) is postulated to be a common and universal facial expression to pain, hardwired and present at birth. We evaluated its presence by applying a computer-based methodology consisting of "point-pair" comparisons captured from video to measure facial movement in the pain expression by way of change across two images: one image before and one image after a painful stimulus (heel-stick). Similarity of facial expression was analyzed in a sample of 57 neonates representing both sexes and 3 ethnic backgrounds (African American, Caucasian and Hispanic/Latino) while controlli

Disgust-specific impairment of facial expression recognition in Parkinson's disease.

There is contradictory evidence regarding whether the impairments of the recognition of emotional facial expressions in Parkinson's disease are specific to certain emotions such as disgust and fear. Generally, neurological case reports on emotion-specific impairments have been suspected of being confounded with the factor of task difficulty. Using a refined assessment method in which the difficulty factors were controlled by means of mixed facial expressions and item response theory, we attempted to clarify whether Parkinson's disease disproportionately impaired the recognition of specific emo
