Solitary fibrous tumors of the skin: a clinicopathologic study of 10 cases and review of the literature.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a relatively uncommon neoplasm that most commonly arises in the pleura. However, SFT is now known to affect various other anatomic sites as well, including rare examples in the skin, where the histologic features of this lesion may create diagnostic confusion with a variety of other spindle-cell tumors. In order to further the characterization of cutaneous SFT, all available cases of that entity were retrieved from the authors' institutional files. Immunohistochemical analysis for CD-34, CD-99, vimentin, bcl-2, factor XIIIa, S100 protein, smooth muscle actin, pa

[Factor XIII and wound healing].

In addition to those wounds with increasing fragility of capillaries during impaired healing, there are especially long lasting diabetic wounds or calf ulcerations due to chronic venous insufficiency or postthrombotic syndrome that show a failure of endothelial barrier function with an increased permeability as an important part of its pathophysiological situation. The possibility of controlling this increased permeability is of great therapeutical interest and may give distinct benefit for wound healing. In the close past, clinical as well as experimental studies revealed the plasma transglut

Multinucleate-cell angiohistiocytoma occurring in a patient with mycosis fungoides.

Multinucleate-cell angiohistiocytoma (MCAH) is a benign vascular proliferation of unknown etiology. Clinically, MCAH presents as grouped, erythematous, or violaceous papules on the extremities in older women. These lesions often resemble Kaposi's sarcoma. Histologic examination reveals characteristic bizarre-shaped, multinucleate giant cells, some of which contain three to six nuclei arranged in a ring-like or overlapping pattern, which stain positively for Factor XIIIa. In addition, there is a proliferation of dermal capillaries and venules with a mild lymphohistiocytic infiltrate. To our kno

New applications of electron microscopy techniques in dermatopathology.

The application of immunostaining techniques to electron microscopy specimens has led to a renewal of interest in electron microscopy in biological research in general, as well as in dermatopathology. Refinements in the preparative procedures have made easier the immunolocalization of antigens both in chemically-fixed and frozen unfixed tissues, embedded in plastic and sectioned. Application of these methods has led to the demonstration of the bullous pemphigoid antigen inside basal keratinocytes. HMB-45 antigen has been found to be present in premelanosomes. Recently, Factor XIIIa has been lo

[Kaposi's disease in a female patient with acquired HIV-negative immunodeficiency].

A 79-year-old woman of Mediterranean ascent suffered from corticosteroid-dependent chronic obstructive lung disease, hypogammaglobulinemia (IgG 1 and 2), decreased CD16 natural killer cell function and non-HIV related CD4 and CD8 lymphopenia. Such immunodeficiency could be either a variant of common variable immunodeficiency or an early stage of the idiopathic CD4 + T lymphocytopenia syndrome. She developed bilateral lesions of Kaposi's sarcoma on the lower extremities resembling the classic European type of the disease. The tumors contained both CD34 + and Factor XIIIa + cells. The HLA-DR5 ha

Papular eruption of human immunodeficiency virus disease. A review of the clinical, histologic, and immunohistochemical findings in 48 cases. The Military Medical Consortium for Applied Retroviral Research.

The papular eruption (PE) associated with human immunodeficiency virus infection, although described as a distinctive clinicopathologic entity, has shown a wide range of histologic findings ranging from eosinophilic folliculitis to granuloma annulare. We examined 48 cases of the PE in order to define the histologic spectrum of these lesions, and to correlate these findings with clinical presentations. The most distinctive clinical features are the frequency of these lesions in this population, the large number of lesions, pruritus, and the chronic nature of the lesions. Histologically, the dis

Dermal dendritic cells in anogenital warty lesions unresponsive to an immune-response modifier.

BACKGROUND: Human papilloma viruses (HPV) are responsible for a variety of proliferative epithelial lesions including anogenital condylomas. These lesions may regress during treatment with an immune-response modifier such as imiquimod. The release of specific cytokines from the monocyte-macrophage lineage induces a cascade of events abating the HPV replication. METHOD: A total of 14 persistent warty anogenital lesions were excised 4 to 7 weeks after completing a 4-month imiquimod treatment. Another series of 25 untreated condylomas and 8 bowenoid papulosis served as controls. All examined les

Dendrocytes in verruga peruana and bacillary angiomatosis.

Verruga peruana and bacillary angiomatosis are two cutaneous diseases characterized by angiomatous growths linked to the presence of rickettsia-like organisms. These lesions are currently considered to be endothelial hyperplasias and to share many features. By immunohistochemistry and computerized image analysis, we studied the presence of factor-XIIIa-positive dendrocytes in these lesions and compared our data with similar research in capillary angiomas and normal skin. Other cell lines were studied by Ulex europaeus and by antibodies to the L1 antigen and to the von Willebrand factor. Dendro

Congenital Juvenile Xanthogranuloma in the Perioral Region: A Case Image.

Juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) is the most common form of non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis in childhood. It often presents with cutaneous involvement and exhibits a predilection for the head and neck region. This article illustrates a case of congenital JXG in a 5-month-old boy, characterized by a solitary, well-circumscribed nodule above the left upper lip. Histopathologically, the lesion exhibited histiocytes with eosinophilic cytoplasm and Touton giant cells. Immunohistochemistry revealed histiocytes positive for CD68 and Factor XIIIa, while negative for S-100 protein. Clinicians should be

Antibodies against Noncatalytic B Subunit of Factor XIII Inhibit Activation of Factor XIII and Fibrin Crosslinking.

BACKGROUND: Coagulation factor XIII (FXIII) is a proenzyme of plasma transglutaminase. It comprises two catalytic A subunits (FXIII-A) and two carrier B subunits (FXIII-B). We previously reported that alloantibodies against FXIII-B could promote FXIII clearance in a patient with congenital FXIII-B deficiency who had received infusions of plasma-derived human FXIII (A2B2 heterotetramer). OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate whether anti-FXIII-B antibodies affect the catalytic function of FXIII. METHODS: FXIII activation and fibrin crosslinking were examined in the presence of patient plasma, i

Correlation of factor XIII subunit A with factor XIII activity in a population of parturient women.

BACKGROUND: The role of factor XIII in acute bleeding situations is gaining more and more importance. It has previously been shown that prepartum factor XIII activity has a significant impact on postpartum blood loss. Whether factor XIII antigen behaves in a similar manner is unknown. As postpartum hemorrhage is one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide and factor XIII antigen determination might be available more readily in some centers as compared to factor XIII activity, this is an important question to answer, especially in the emergency situation of a postpar

Deep juvenile xanthogranuloma: an unusual presentation.

Juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) is a disorder of histiocytes usually associated with cutaneous lesions. It may present a diagnostic dilemma in the absence of cutaneous lesions and when deeply located. Differentiation of JXG from other childhood histiocytosis syndromes, especially Langerhans' cell histiocytosis (LCH), is important. We describe an unusual case of deep JXG in a 27-month-old girl with multiple omental and peritoneal nodules presenting with ascites. Although a diagnosis of LCH was suspected clinically, the absence of Birbeck granules and S-100 protein and T6 antigen negativity, toge

A study of accessory cells in the acquired lymphoid tissue of helicobacter gastritis.

This paper presents a description of the patterns of distribution of accessory cells in helicobacter gastritis and low-grade gastric MALT lymphomas. The use of gastric resection specimens afforded abundant, well-orientated lymphoid tissue. Fifteen cases were selected from patients with MALT lymphomas, three with gastritis alone, and six histologically normal controls. A panel of antibodies working in paraffin-embedded tissue, identifying differing accessory cells, was used. These comprised antibodies to HLA class II (WR18), acid cysteine proteinase inhibitor (ACPI), CD68 (PGM1), Factor XIIIa,

Multifocal sclerotic lesions in Erdheim-Chester disease successfully treated with tocilizumab.

A 58-year-old woman presented to the outpatient clinic with invalidating bone pain in the proximal lower extremities. Laboratory testing showed increased inflammation parameters with a normocytic anemia. Bone scintigraphy revealed increased uptake in both radii, distal femurs, tibiae, and fibulae. PET/CT scanning showed irregular sclerotic bone lesions without other abnormalities. Multiple bone biopsies showed histiocytes expressing CD68 and Factor XIIIa. Metastatic or hematopoietic neoplasms were ruled out. A diagnosis of Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) with solely osseous involvement was made.

Atypical cellular unguioblastic fibroma-A rare case with more atypical histological features than previously reported.

We herein present the clinicopathological features of an atypical cellular unguioblastic fibroma, a rare onychomatrical tumor, in an adult woman of Southeast Asian origin. The tumor displayed both diffuse hypercellularity and atypia in the mesenchymal component and the presence of large multinucleated cells with a ring-/floret-like arrangement of irregular and hyperchromatic nuclei. The mesenchymal cells displayed a patchy weak positive immunereactivity for CD34 (including atypical and wreath-like multinucleated cells) and for CD10 but were negative for low molecular weight cytokeratins, epith

Follicular localization of dendritic cells in a xanthomatous inflammatory tumor of lung associated with human herpes virus-8 infection.

A 17-year-old man was treated with chemotherapy and radiation for nodular sclerosing Hodgkin lymphoma that presented as a left chest wall mass. Ten years later, a left upper lobe lung tumor was identified. The tumor resection demonstrated a 1.3-cm yellow lung nodule composed of epithelioid and spindled lipid-laden CD68+ and Factor XIIIa+ macrophages. Distinct follicular structures with dendritic cells positive for CD1a, fascin, and ALK-1 and largely devoid of intracytoplasmic lipid were a distinguishing feature of the lesion. Most of the xanthomatous macrophages expressed human herpes virus-8

Unilateral facial angiofibromas--a segmental form of tuberous sclerosis.

Multiple facial angiofibromas are thought to be a pathognomonic and common, feature of tuberous sclerosis. In contrast, it is rare to see multiple angiofibromas limited to one side of the face. We have studied a patient with multiple angiofibromas of one cheek, in order to search for other manifestations of tuberous sclerosis and to determine the histochemical identity of the angiofibromas. No evidence of other pathology known to be associated with the tuberous sclerosis complex was uncovered. Histopathology of the unilateral lesions revealed focal fibroplasia and positive cellular staining fo

Alpha-2 antiplasmin deficiency: a rare fibrinolytic disorder identified after decades of diagnostic delay.

Alpha-2 antiplasmin (α2AP) deficiency is a rare fibrinolytic disorder characterized by unregulated plasmin activity and premature clot breakdown. Mechanistically, α2AP restrains fibrinolysis by (i) forming a covalent serpin complex with plasmin, (ii) blocking plasminogen binding to fibrin, and (iii) undergoing factor XIIIa-mediated cross-linking into fibrin to harden clots against local lysis. We describe a woman with decades of delayed postoperative bleeding, transfusion dependence, and a presumed diagnosis of von Willebrand disease, ultimately found to have congenital α2AP deficiency. Hereditary progressive mucinous histiocytosis: first report in a male patient.

Progressive mucinous histiocytosis is a very rare, benign, non-Langerhans' cell histiocytosis limited to the skin. In total ten patients (all women) in four families and three sporadic cases have been reported. We report here the first published case of a male patient with progressive mucinous histiocytosis. The multiple red papules on the scalp and forearms were asymptomatic and had slowly increased over approximately the past 20 years. The patient's mother had similar lesions. Histological examination revealed nodules in the dermis with histiocytes and mucin deposition. The histiocytes stain
