Prediction of Postpartum Weight in Low-Income Mexican-Origin Women From Childhood Experiences of Abuse and Family Conflict.

OBJECTIVES: The postpartum period represents a crucial transition period in which weight gain or loss can affect lifetime obesity risk. This study examined the prevalence of obesity and the influence of childhood abuse and family conflict on postpartum weight among low-income Mexican-origin women. Depressive symptoms and partner support were evaluated as mediators. METHODS: At a prenatal assessment, low-income Mexican-origin women (N = 322; mean [SD] age, 27.8 [6.5]) reported on childhood abuse and family conflict. Weight was measured 7 times between 6 weeks and 2 years postpartum and calcula

Predictive genetic testing for neurodegenerative conditions: how should conflicting interests within families be managed?

Predictive genetic testing for a neurodegenerative condition in one individual in a family may have implications for other family members, in that it can reveal their genetic status. Herein a complex clinical case is explored where the testing wish of one family member was in direct conflict to that of another. The son of a person at 50% risk of an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative condition requested testing to reveal his genetic status. The main reason for the request was if he had the familial mutation, he and his partner planned to utilise preimplantation genetic diagnosis to prevent hi

Overt and covert parental conflict and adolescent problems: observed marital interaction in clinic and nonclinic families.

When adolescents behave in socially unacceptable ways, overt interparental conflict is widely held to be the cause. Empirical studies, however, have been inconsistent in supporting this assumption. Some researchers therefore have speculated that covert conflict also plays a role. In the current observational study, evidence was found that both overt parental conflict and some forms of covert conflict play roles. During problem-solving family discussions, parents of adolescents whom they had brought into an outpatient clinic for treatment overtly disagreed with each other significantly more oft

Marital conflict, sibling closeness, and youth adjustment in Mexican-origin families: A multilevel moderation analysis.

Marital conflict is a well-documented family stressor linked to youth maladjustment. However, limited research has examined protective factors that may buffer these effects in Mexican-origin families, where cultural values emphasizing familial harmony may intensify the negative impact of marital conflict. Guided by family systems theory, this multi-informant, longitudinal study investigated how mother- and father-reported marital conflict related to youth-reported adjustment and whether sibling closeness moderated these associations. Participants included 246 two-parent Mexican-origin families

The "Ladder of Inference" as a Conflict Management Tool: Working with the "Difficult" Patient or Family in Healthcare Ethics Consultations.

Conflict resolution is a core component of healthcare ethics consultation (HEC) and proficiency in this skill set is recognized by the national bioethics organization and its HEC certification process. Difficult interpersonal interactions between the clinical team and patients or their families are often inexorably connected to the normative disputes that are the catalyst for the consult. Ethics consultants are often required to navigate challenging dynamics that have become entrenched and work with patient-provider or family-provider relationships that have already broken down. The first step

Work-family conflict and burnout in night-shift nurses with children: the mediating roles of recovery experience and fatigue.

BACKGROUND: Burnout among nurses is a major global concern, particularly among those working night shifts, which can compromise the quality of nursing care, increase turnover intentions, and threaten the stability of the nursing workforce. Previous studies have shown that work-family conflict correlates positively with burnout in nurses, but not enough research has been performed on its relationship among night-shift nurses with children. In addition, the mechanism of this relationship is not completely clear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the relationships among work-family conflict

Family Ties online help: Pilot evaluation of an online intervention to reduce the impact of parental conflict on children.

OBJECTIVES: Despite strong evidence indicating the adverse impact of parental conflict on child well-being, the evidence base regarding effective intervention is generally poor and the needs of children impacted by parental conflict often go unaddressed. Family Ties Online is a short term, low-intensity, manualised intervention delivered remotely for low-risk parents. This paper reports outcomes following an initial pilot of the intervention involving 25 families. DESIGN: A convergent mixed methods design was employed, involving collecting, analysing and merging quantitative and qualitative d

Invisible burdens: Gender-specific associations between migraine and work-family conflict: Insights from the SMILE project - a cohort study.

BackgroundMigraine, a neurovascular disorder that affects quality of life, with peak prevalence during individuals' most productive working years. Work-family conflict (WFC), a well-documented source of stress, occurs when work and family responsibilities interfere with each other. While migraine has been associated with occupational impairment, its association with WFC remains underexplored. The present study examines the association between migraine diagnosis, severity and WFC, stratified by gender.MethodsThis study analyzed data from the SMILE cohort, a subset of the Negev Migraine Cohort.

Family Conflict, Physical Symptoms, and Post Traumatic Stress among Sexual Minorities during the COVID Pandemic: A Moderated Mediation Model.

Sexual minorities experience health disparities compared to heterosexuals due to their stigmatized identies. The COVID- 19 pandemic has further exacerbated these disparities. Sexual minorities were surveyed about their experiences during the pandemic and asked about family conflict and minority stress as predictors of Post Traumatic Stress Symptoms (PTSS) and physical health symptoms, as well as psychological symptoms as a mediator of these relationships. We surveyed 435 sexual minorities who were recruited from Mechanical MTurk. Participants completed questionnaires that included demographics

Accounting for the association of family conflict and heavy alcohol use among adolescent girls: the role of depressed mood.

OBJECTIVE: Heavy alcohol use increases dramatically at age 14, and there is emerging cross-sectional evidence that when girls experience family conflict at younger ages (11-13 years) the risk of alcohol use and misuse is high. This study evaluated the role of family conflict and subsequent depressed mood in predicting heavy alcohol use among adolescent girls. METHOD: This was a three-wave longitudinal study with annual assessments (modal ages 12, 13, and 14 years). The participants (N = 886, 57% female) were from 12 metropolitan schools in Victoria, Australia, and participants completed quest

Linking citizenship pressure to work-family conflict: the mediating role of citizenship fatigue and the moderating role of mindfulness.

BACKGROUND: With volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity, employees are often encouraged to take on tasks beyond their responsibilities, which may lead to citizenship fatigue, and be associated with work-family conflict. As an important individual resource, mindfulness may buffer this process. METHODS: drawing on resource conservation theory and role pressure theory, this study examines the mechanism underlying the relationship between citizenship pressure and employees’ work-family conflict and constructs a mediating model that includes citizenship fatigue and mindfulness. The data

The relationship between work-family conflict, stress and depression among Chinese correctional officers: a mediation and network analysis study.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have found that depression is prevalent among correctional officers (COs), which may be related to the work-family conflict (WFC) faced by this cohort. Role conflict theory posits that WFC emerges from the incompatibility between the demands of work and family roles, which induces stress and, in turn, results in emotional problems. Thus, this study seeks to investigate the association between WFC and depression, along with examining the mediating role of stress. Further network analysis is applied to identify the core and bridge symptoms within the network of WFC,

Depressed Mood During Early to Middle Adolescence: A Bi-national Longitudinal Study of the Unique Impact of Family Conflict.

Adolescent depressed mood is related to the development of subsequent mental health problems, and family problems have been linked to adolescent depression. Longitudinal research on adolescent depressed mood is needed to establish the unique impact of family problems independent of other potential drivers. This study tested the extent to which family conflict exacerbates depressed mood during adolescence, independent of changes in depressed mood over time, academic performance, bullying victimization, negative cognitive style, and gender. Students (13 years old) participated in a three-wave bi
