Fear of flying is a widespread phenomenon and therefore, there is no clear-cut borderline between "normal" and "pathological" fear. People who seek help are those whose lives are severely affected by their avoidance behaviour. Fear of flying can be treated, and in particular, procedures for coping with fear, as developed in behavioural therapy are employed in the course of treatment. 'Systematic desensitization' is particularly suitable for dealing with specific flying phobia. 'Exposure according to the reaction management model' is indicated in the case of patients in whom fear of flying is a

Flying gives the aviator a sense of power and control. Aviators challenge their own skills and test the physical limitations of the plane. They must maintain the balance between fear and joy, sacrifice and love, and risks and rewards of flying in order to continue to fly without reservation. Flying is dangerous. The danger is both real and symbolic, generating fears and anxiety. Interpretation of fear of flying spans from the psychoanalytic-endogenous on one side to the behaviouristic-exogenous on the other side. Unless strictly understood, both models should be taken to consider the interacti

This article deals with the physician's fear of contagion using AIDS as a paradigm. It deals with this in four ways: it examines the concepts of duty, fear and courage in their medical setting; it deals with the historical aspects of the problem; it analyzes the role of social contract and professionalism; and it develops a viewpoint of the physician's obligation based on these considerations and predicated on a view of professionalism and social contract.

The central hypothesis of this paper is that the innate fear of death in the human being is universal and that the child, least of all, is immune to death fear and its symbolic representation. This cuts across all ages and developmental levels. This paper is not concerned with the empirical knowledge of death, an area that has been extensively explored by others such as Nagy (1948), Piaget (1929), and Anthony (1940).Examination of the child and his relationship to death is important in order to reach the truth and understand the human meaning of the fear of death. The child's conception of hims

Expectancy violation has been proposed as a potential core mechanism of action in psychotherapy, particularly in exposure therapy for anxiety disorders. However, various relevant expectations have been discussed, and empirical studies examining their significance are still scarce. This study aimed to investigate one specific form of expectancy violation, based on Rachman's (1994) match-mismatch model, specifically by comparing expected and experienced fear and examining their relationship to safety behaviour during exposure in vivo in 268 patients meeting DSM-IV criteria for panic disorder wit

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) on smoking cessation in patients diagnosed with bladder tumors. This study explores its potential role as a motivator for behavioral changes, specifically tobacco abstinence.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 79 patients undergoing surgical intervention for tumor treatment were included in this cross-sectional study. Smoking history and the specific motivation for cessation were documented. FCR was assessed using the Fear of Cancer Recurrence Inventory - Short Form (FCRI-SF). Statistical analysis was performed to compare FCRI

This study assessed the predictive potential of laboratory conditioning processes (extinction, avoidance, and generalization) for exposure therapy outcomes in 112 spider-fearful women. Three aversive conditioning tasks were followed by a baseline assessment of spider fear, virtual reality exposure training, a post assessment after one week and a three-month follow-up assessment. Initial analyses indicated significant positive correlations between reduced extinction, increased avoidance of a conditioned threat stimulus, and overgeneralization, particularly evident in verbal measures. In subsequ

UNLABELLED: Fear-potentiated startle (FPS) has been widely used to study fear processing in humans and rodents. Human studies have shown higher startle amplitudes and exaggerated fear reactivity to unpredictable vs. predictable threats in individuals suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although human FPS studies often use both sexes, a surprisingly limited number of rodent FPS studies use females. Here we investigate the effects of signal-threat contingency, signal-threat order and threat predictability on FPS in both sexes. We use a classic fear-conditioning protocol (100% c

Fear overgeneralization is thought to be one of the cardinal processes underlying anxiety disorders, and a determinant of the onset, maintenance and recurrence of these disorders. Animal studies have shown that stimulating the vagus nerve (VNS) affects neuronal pathways implicated in pattern separation and completion, suggesting it may reduce the generalization of a fear memory to novel situations. In a one-day study, 58 healthy students were subjected to a fear conditioning, fear generalization, and fear extinction paradigm. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either transcutaneous

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common and chronic mental illness whose pathogenesis is not yet fully understood, and treatment responses are often suboptimal. Animal models play a crucial role in elucidating its neurobiological mechanisms and developing novel therapeutic approaches. This article systematically reviews two primary mouse modelling paradigms: social fear conditioning (SFC) and social defeat. The SFC model induces specific social fear behaviors by pairing a social stimulus with an aversive event, whereas the social defeat model, by simulating social conflict and psychological

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) involves excessive fear of social situations and can be induced by social trauma. However, the underlying mechanisms of individual differences in the formation of social fear memory remain unclear. To address this gap, we adapted our mouse social fear conditioning paradigm for rats (rSFC) and compared adult male rats selectively bred for high (HAB) or low (LAB) anxiety-related behaviour and non-selected controls (NAB). HAB and LAB rats are established as a model displaying genetically determined extremes in socio-emotional behaviours. Conditioned HAB, LAB, and NAB

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is mainly characterized by dysregulated fear responses, including hyperarousal and intrusive re-experiencing of traumatic memories. This work delves into the intricate interplay between abnormal fear responses, cortisol dysregulation, and the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, elucidating their role in the manifestation of PTSD. Given the persistent nature of PTSD symptoms and the limitations of conventional therapies, innovative interventions are urgently needed. One promising avenue of research revolves around the modulation of cortisol through t

Dysfunction in fear and stress responses is intrinsically linked to various neurological diseases, including anxiety disorders, depression, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Previous studies using in vivo models with Immediate-Extinction Deficit (IED) and Stress Enhanced Fear Learning (SEFL) protocols have provided valuable insights into these mechanisms and aided the development of new therapeutic approaches. However, assessing these dysfunctions in animal subjects using IED and SEFL protocols can cause significant pain and suffering. To advance the understanding of fear and stress, this st

Human studies of fear neurobiology have established neural circuits that are activated to threatening stimuli, whether it be during Pavlovian fear conditioning or in response to naturally occurring threats. This circuitry involves the central and basolateral amygdala, as well as the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, insula, hippocampus, and regulatory regions such as the anterior cingulate cortex and ventromedial prefrontal cortex. While research has found that fear-based disorders, such as anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder, as associated with dysfunction in these circuits, there i

Fear conditioning is an established model for investigating posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, symptom triggers may vaguely resemble the initial traumatic event, differing on a variety of sensory and affective dimensions. We extended the fear-conditioning model to assess generalization of conditioned fear on fear processing neurocircuitry in PTSD. Military veterans (n=67) consisting of PTSD (n=32) and trauma-exposed comparison (n=35) groups underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging during fear conditioning to a low fear-expressing face while a neutral face was explicitly unre

The current review deals with interoceptive conditioning as a viable mechanism maintaining fear of pain: The available literature suggests that interoceptive - i.e., internal bodily - sensations may become predictors of pain and will subsequently elicit fear of pain. After a short overview of interoceptive (fear) conditioning and its role in the maintenance of panic disorder, the existing literature on conditioning in the field of pain and fear of pain is reviewed. Next, the authors propose an interoceptive fear conditioning model of fear of pain, suggesting that bodily sensations can function

BACKGROUND: Two core characteristics of pathologic fear are its rapid onset and resistance to cognitive regulation. We hypothesized that activation of the amygdala early in the presentation of fear-relevant visual stimuli would distinguish phobics from nonphobics.
METHODS: Chronometry of amygdala activation to phobia-relevant pictures was assessed in 13 spider phobics and 14 nonphobics using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
RESULTS: Blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) responses in the amygdala early in picture processing consistently differentiated between phobic and nonphobic s
