Dynamic Testing in a Heterogeneous Clinical Sample: A Feasibility Study.

This study evaluated the feasibility of including a computerized dynamic test of analogical reasoning in standard neuropsychological assessments in a heterogeneous psychiatric population. The participants were 40 adult patients (Mage = 33.15 ± 12.27, range 19-68; 60% male) enrolled in specialized mental health and forensic care programs in The Netherlands, who were randomly assigned into either a training, a passive, or a control group. A pretest-training-posttest paradigm was used for the training group, and the dynamic test consisted of 26 items of the A:B::C:? type. In terms of practical us

Lymphatic Drainage in Patients with Heart Failure: A Feasibility Study.

Lymphatic dysfunction contributes to congestion and end-organ damage in heart failure (HF), yet current therapies do not directly target lymphatic congestion. Thoracic duct (TD) drainage offers a novel approach to address this gap. This multicenter feasibility study evaluated the safety and feasibility of minimally invasive TD drainage in patients with HF. Four patients with New York Heart Association class II-IV HF and fluid overload underwent fluoroscopy-guided TD access via cervical, abdominal, or transvenous brachial approaches. Lymph was drained by gravity for up to 3 hours, and hemodynam

Expansion Microscopy of the Enteric Nervous System: A Feasibility Study.

Expansion microscopy (ExM) enables conventional light microscopes to achieve nanoscale resolution by physically enlarging biological specimens. While ExM has been widely applied in neurobiology, it has not been adapted for the enteric nervous system (ENS). Here, we provide a detailed and reproducible protocol for applying ExM to mouse colonic ENS tissue. The procedure includes preparation of the external muscle layers with the myenteric plexus, histochemical staining for NADPH-diaphorase, immunostaining for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), anchoring of biomolecules, gelation, proteinase

Parkinson's disease cerebrovascular reactivity pattern: A feasibility study.

A mounting body of research points to cerebrovascular dysfunction as a fundamental element in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease (PD). In the current feasibility study, blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) MRI was used to measure cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) in response to hypercapnia in 26 PD patients and 16 healthy controls (HC), and aimed to find a multivariate pattern specific to PD. Whole-brain maps of CVR amplitude (i.e., magnitude of response to CO2) and latency (i.e., time to reach maximum amplitude) were computed, which were further analyzed using scaled sub-profile model p

Nerve to subclavius for neurotization procedures: an anatomical feasibility study.

Injuries to the inferior trunk of the brachial plexus and its components can be debilitating. As such injuries are prioritized by surgeons during repair, an additional nerve transfer is considered herein. In the supine position, 13 adult cadavers (26 sides) underwent dissection of the nerve to subclavius and the proximal brachial plexus in the supraclavicular region. Once the nerve was located and isolated from origin to termination, measurements of its length and diameter were made. Next, the C8 and T1 roots and inferior trunk were identified. The distal end of the nerve to subclavius was tra

Hypnotherapy for agoraphobia-Feasibility and efficacy investigated in a pilot study.

UNLABELLED: A number of case studies describing hypnotherapy in the treatment of anxiety disorder patients have already been published. Only a few randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigated the efficacy of hypnotherapy but focused mainly on symptoms rather than specific mental disorders. The goal of this study was to investigate whether hypnotherapy (HT) was superior to a waitlist control group (WL) in the reduction of agoraphobia-related symptoms. Further goals were to report the feasibility of hypnotherapy as well as attrition and completion rates and detect (epi-)genetic variables, wh

Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Depression in Parkinson's Disease: A Feasibility Study.

Individuals living with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience interpersonal stressors that contribute to depressive risk. Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) emphasizes the bidirectional relationship between interpersonal stressors and mood may therefore be a suitable treatment for PD-depression. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of delivering 12 sessions of IPT to depressed PD patients and explore the need for modifications. A secondary aim was to obtain descriptive information about efficacy outcomes. The study used a pre-post design without a comparison group. Partic

A Feasibility Study of a Novel Delayed Cord Clamping Cart.

Delaying umbilical cord clamping (DCC) for 1 min or longer following a neonate's birth has now been recommended for preterm and term newborns by multiple professional organizations. DCC has been shown to decrease rates of iron deficiency anemia, intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), and blood transfusion. Despite these benefits, clinicians typically cut the umbilical cord without delay in neonates requiring resuscitation and move them to a radiant warmer for further care; this effectively prevents these patients from receiving any benefits from DCC. This study eva

Variability Predictors of Vasospasm in Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: A Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Mean cerebral blood flow velocity (mean-CBFV) obtained from Transcranial Doppler (TCD) poorly predicts cerebral vasospasm in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Variability descriptors of mean-CBFV obtained during extended TCD recordings may improve this prediction. We assessed the feasibility of generating reliable linear and non-linear descriptors of mean-CBFV variability using extended recordings in aSAH patients and in healthy controls. We also explored which of those metrics might have the ability to discriminate between aSAH patients and healthy controls,

The extradural extended eyebrow approach: A cadaveric feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: Extradural anterior clinoidectomy (eAC) is key to expose the paraclinoid region. Several authors have pointed limitations of performing an eAC through a supraorbital craniotomy. In this article, we aim to provide educational material and discuss the technical nuances to successfully perform an eAC throughout a modification of the supraorbital approach, the extradural extended eyebrow approach (xEBA+eAC). METHODS: Four embalmed heads were used for anatomic dissection and perform the xEBA+eAC. Additionally, one head was used for a video demonstration of the surgical approach. RES

Esophageal Cooling for Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy: A Feasibility Study.

Targeted temperature management (TTM) is a recognized treatment to decrease mortality and improve neurological function in hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. An esophageal cooling device (ECD) has been studied in animal models, but human data are limited. An ECD appears to offer similar benefits to intravascular cooling catheters, with potentially less risk to the patient. We studied whether the ECD could act as a substitute for intravascular cooling catheters in delivering adequate TTM after cardiac arrest. Nine patients admitted to the intensive care unit after cardiac arrest who required TTM
