Impact of antiplatelet agents and anticoagulants on the performance of fecal immunochemical tests: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Antithrombotic agents may increase the bleeding tendency and affect the performance of fecal immunochemical test (FIT). We aimed to evaluate the impact of antithrombotic agents on the performance of FIT through a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: All relevant studies published between January 1980 and September 2020 that examined the diagnostic performance of FIT were searched through MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases. We performed a meta-analysis for the positive predictive value (PPV) of FIT for detecting advanced colorectal neoplasia (ACRN) or colorect

One-year impact of a bowel management program in treating fecal incontinence in patients with anorectal malformations.

BACKGROUND: Many patients with anorectal malformations (ARM) need a bowel management program (BMP) to manage lifelong problems of fecal incontinence or severe constipation. We aimed to evaluate the sustainability of the results in such a program. METHODS: A single-institution retrospective review was performed in children with ARM who attended our BMP (2015-2019). Standardized definitions and validated tools were used to assess fecal continence (Baylor Continence Scale), constipation (Cleveland Constipation Scoring System), urinary symptoms (Vancouver Symptoms Score), and the Pediatric Qualit

Megacolon and stercoral proctitis after frequent fecal impactions: report of an unusual case and review of the literature.

Persistent megacolon that results from frequent episodes of fecal impaction without adequate treatment is a rare and seldom reported condition in the elderly. This report discusses a 72-year-old white woman presenting with a large abdominal mass, who had at least 4 episodes of radiographically demonstrated fecal impaction over the previous year without adequate treatment. The patient required hospitalization for a bleeding rectal ulcer during the second episode of fecal impaction. Computed tomography (CT) scans on this admission revealed a dilated colon up to 16 x 14 cm in maximal dimensions e

Assessing the Impact of Fecal Volume on Detection Dog Responses to Chronic Wasting Disease Training Aids.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a fatal prion disease in cervids. Because prions persist in the environment, early detection is essential for containment. Trained detection dogs have shown promise as a noninvasive surveillance method through identification of volatile organic compounds associated with CWD in white-tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileus virginianus) fecal matter. To reduce the risk of environmental contamination, recent CWD detection work has used cotton training aids incubated (i.e., passively odor exposed without direct contact) with small quantities of WTD fecal matter. However, oper

Impact of antithrombotics on the fecal immunochemical test for colorectal cancer screening : a multi-center Belgian experience.

BACKGROUND: Impact of antithrombotics on the fecal immunochemical test (FIT) for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening remains unclear. METHODS: Patients undergoing colonoscopy for positive FIT in 2015 were assessed at 3 Belgian centers. Significant findings were advanced polyps (AP) (sessile serrated, tubular or villous adenomas >1cm or high-grade dysplasia) and CRC. False positive FIT and detection of AP/CRC with antithrombotics were calculated. RESULTS: 510 patients (64% male, median (IQR) age 63.2 (60.2 - 66.4) years) were included. Colorectal pathology in 371/510 (73%) was associated with m

Evaluation of oral administration of bacteriophages to neonatal calves: Phage survival and impact on fecal Escherichia coli.

Diarrhea is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in neonatal calves. Several enteropathogens are associated with diarrhea in young calves, with Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) infection being the most common type of colibacillosis. The rise of antibiotic resistance in a number of medically important bacterial pathogens has revived interest in the use of bacteriophages as anti-bacterial therapeutic agents. Here we describe the results of a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded study designed to evaluate the effect of an oral bacteriophage cocktail on fecal E. coli colo

Propensity Score-matched Analysis of the Impact of Direct-acting Oral Anticoagulants on Fecal Immunochemical Test Performance.

OBJECTIVES: The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) is widely used for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, owing to its high diagnostic accuracy. Antithrombotic medications, particularly direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs), can influence FIT performance; however, the evidence concerning this phenomenon remains inconsistent in the literature. This study evaluated the impact of DOACs on the positive predictive value (PPV) of FIT for diagnosing advanced neoplasia (AN). METHODS: This retrospective study, conducted at Mie University Hospital, analyzed 818 patients who underwent colonoscopy proced

Evaluating the Impact of Prophylactic Administration of Ivermectin on the Fecal Microbiome of Healthy C57BL/6J Mice (Mus musculus).

Upon importation, laboratory mice may undergo prophylactic antiparasitic treatment during quarantine to prevent the introduction of parasites into established colonies. While quarantine protocols vary across institutions, ivermectin is commonly used, administered either orally or topically. However, the impact of these practices on the fecal microbiome remains poorly understood, raising concerns about unintended consequences for experimental outcomes. This study investigated the effects of ivermectin on fecal microbiome composition in naïve, healthy male and female C57BL/6J mice. Animals recei

The Impact of Complementary Feeding on Fecal Microbiota in Exclusively Breast-Fed Infants with Cystic Fibrosis (A Descriptive Study).

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Early life gut microbiota plays a pivotal role in shaping immunity, metabolism, and overall health outcomes. This is relevant in healthy infants but may be even more crucial in infants with chronic devastating diseases, such as cystic fibrosis (CF). While the introduction of solid foods in healthy infants modifies the composition of colonic microbiota, less knowledge is available on those with CF. The aim of this descriptive observational study was to assess the composition of fecal microbiota in six exclusively breast-fed infants with CF, and then explore the changes in

The impact of combined sewer outflows on urban water quality: Spatio-temporal patterns of fecal coliform in indianapolis.

Many urban waterways with older stormwater drainage systems receive a significant amount of untreated or poorly treated waste from Combined Sewer Outflow (CSO) systems during precipitation events. The input of effluent waste from CSO to urban water streams during storm events often leads to elevated fecal coliform, specifically Escherichia Coli (E. Coli) in these waterways. The aim of the study is to examine fecal coliform concentration, water chemistry, and water quality parameters to better understand spatio-temporal patterns of fecal coliform associated with CSO events in three waterways fr

The impact of MIF deficiency on alterations of fecal microbiota in C57BL/6 mice induced by Trichinella spiralis infection.

Trichinellosis caused by Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis) is a major food-borne parasitic zoonosis worldwide. Prevention of trichinellosis is an effective strategy to improve patient quality of life. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is closely related to the occurrence and development of several parasitic diseases. Studying the impact of MIF deficiency (Mif-/- ) on the alterations in host fecal microbiota due to T. spiralis infection may contribute to proposing a novel dual therapeutic approach for trichinellosis. To reveal the diversity and differences in fecal microbial composi

The Activity of Liposomal Linolenic Acid Against Helicobacter pylori In Vitro and Its Impact on Human Fecal Bacteria.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is associated with a variety of gastrointestinal diseases. Here, we focused on the activity of a novel nanomedicine-liposomal linolenic acid (LipoLLA) against H. pylori and its impact on human fecal bacteria in vitro. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of LipoLLA against 30 H. pylori clinical strains were determined in combination with amoxicillin (AMX), metronidazole (MTZ), levofloxacin (LVFX) and clarithromycin (CAM). Bactericidal activity was measured by generating concentration-bactericidal curves at different times and pH values. Leakage

The impact of therapeutic-dose induced intestinal enrofloxacin concentrations in healthy pigs on fecal Escherichia coli populations.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of therapy-induced intestinal tract concentrations of antimicrobials allows for interpretation and prediction of antimicrobial resistance selection within the intestinal microbiota. This study describes the impact of three different doses of enrofloxacin (ENR) and two different administration routes on the intestinal concentration of ENR and on the fecal Escherichia coli populations in pigs. Enrofloxacin was administered on three consecutive days to four different treatment groups. The groups either received an oral bolus administration of ENR (conventional or half dose)
