As a core feature of social anxiety disorder (SAD), the neural mechanisms through which fear of positive evaluation (FPE) influences the processing of social feedback remain unclear. This study employed the Social Judgment Paradigm (SJP) to compare neural activity in individuals with high and low FPE when they received expected or unexpected social acceptance or rejection feedback. Behavioral results indicated that the low FPE group exhibited a positive expectancy bias, whereas the high FPE group showed no such tendency. Neuroelectrophysiological findings revealed that unexpected feedback elic

Public speaking anxiety (PSA) is defined as a strong distress when performing a speech in front of an audience, causing impairment in terms of work possibilities and social relationships. Audience behavior and feedback received during a speech are a crucial variable to induce PSA, affecting performance and perception. In this study, two different virtual reality public speaking scenarios were developed to investigate the impact of positive (more assertive) versus negative (more hostile) audience behavior regarding perceived anxiety and physiological arousal during performance. Moreover, the pr

Deterioration in motor control is a hallmark of ageing, significantly contributing to a decline in quality of life. More controversial is the question of whether and how ageing impacts sensorimotor learning. We hypothesized that the inconsistent picture observed in current literature can be attributed to at least two factors. First, ageing studies tend to be underpowered. Second, the learning assays used in these experiments tend to reflect, to varying degrees, the operation of multiple learning processes, making it difficult to make inferences across studies. Here we took a two-pronged approa

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has emerged as a promising therapeutic intervention across various neurological and psychiatric conditions, including epilepsy, depression, and stroke rehabilitation; however, its mechanisms of action on neural circuits remain incompletely understood. Here, we present a novel theoretical framework based on predictive coding that conceptualizes VNS effects through differential modulation of feedforward and feedback neural circuits. Based on recent evidence, we propose that VNS shifts the balance between feedforward and feedback processing through multiple neuromodu

GH acts as a master regulator of body growth in addition to playing a crucial role in various physiological processes. GH is produced by somatotropic cells in the anterior pituitary gland, and its levels in the blood display a pulsatile pattern. Secretion of GH is primarily regulated by hypothalamic factors released into the hypophyseal portal system. The regulation of GH release involves multiple negative feedback mechanisms that detect changes in circulating levels of either GH or IGF-1. These regulatory loops occur at both the pituitary and hypothalamic levels, indicating the presence of re

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To develop a model that describes how the pancreas functions, how the rate of synthesis of digestive enzymes is regulated, and finally what puts the pancreas to rest between meals.
METHODS: We applied the principals of control theory to previously published canine data to develop a model for how the canine pancreas functions. Using this model, we then describe the steps needed to apply this model to the human pancreas.
RESULTS: This new closed-loop negative feedback model describes what regulates digestive enzyme synthesis. This model is based on basolateral exocytosis o

Regulation of bile acid metabolism is normally discussed as the regulation of bile acid synthesis, which serves to compensate for intestinal loss in order to maintain a constant pool size. After a meal, bile acids start cycling in the enterohepatic circulation. Farnesoid X receptor-dependent ileal and hepatic processes lead to negative feedback inhibition of bile acid synthesis. When the intestinal bile acid flux decreases, the inhibition of synthesis is released. The degree of inhibition of synthesis and the mechanism and degree of activation are still unknown. Moreover, in humans, a biphasic

The IL-6 family of cytokines comprises a large group of cytokines that all act via the formation of a signaling complex that includes the glycoprotein 130 (gp130) receptor. Despite this, many of these cytokines have unique roles that regulate the activity of bone forming osteoblasts, bone resorbing osteoclasts, bone-resident osteocytes, and cartilage cells (chondrocytes). These include specific functions in craniofacial development, longitudinal bone growth, and the maintenance of trabecular and cortical bone structure, and have been implicated in musculoskeletal pathologies such as craniosyno

Here, a direct adaptive control strategy with parametric compensation is adopted for an uncertain non-linear model representing blood glucose regulation in type 1 diabetes mellitus patients. The uncertain parameters of the model are updated by appropriate design of adaptation laws using the Lyapunov method. The closed-loop response of the plasma glucose concentration as well as external insulin infusion rate is analysed for a wide range of variation of the model parameters through extensive simulation studies. The result indicates that the proposed adaptive control scheme avoids severe hypogly

A persistent alternation in the cardiac action potential duration has been linked to the onset of ventricular arrhythmia, which may lead to sudden cardiac death. A coupling between these cardiac alternans and the intracellular calcium dynamics has also been identified in previous studies. In this paper, the system of PDEs describing the small amplitude of alternans and the alternation of peak intracellular Ca(2+) are stabilized by optimal boundary and spatially distributed actuation. A simulation study demonstrating the successful annihilation of both alternans on a one-dimensional cable of ca

Chronic constipation is a frequent complaint. Symptoms of obstructive defecation (straining, hard and lumpy stools, or incomplete evacuation) are more frequent and bothersome than the frequency of bowel movements. Patient assessment is clinically based on the presence or absence of red flags. Commonly used therapies (eg, bulk-forming agents, stool softeners and stimulant laxatives) have only been evaluated in small studies of short duration. Polyethylene glycol was shown to be effective and safe in several rigorous trials with durations of more than one year. New drugs (prucalopride, lubiprost

Ghrelin is produced primarily in the stomach in response to hunger, and circulates in the blood. Plasma ghrelin levels increase during fasting and decrease after ingesting glucose and lipid, but not protein. The efferent vagus nerve contributes to the fasting-induced increase in ghrelin secretion. Ghrelin secreted by the stomach stimulates the afferent vagus nerve and promotes food intake. Ghrelin also stimulates pituitary gland secretion of growth hormone (GH) via the afferent vagus nerve. GH inhibits stomach ghrelin secretion. These findings indicate that the vagal circuit between the centra

We compared the background discharge of vestibular nerve afferents in barbiturate-anesthetized and unanesthetized, decerebrate chinchillas. Based on their interspike-interval statistics, units were categorized as regular, intermediate, or irregular. Background discharge rates were higher in irregular units from decerebrates compared to anesthetized preparations; no such difference was observed for regular or intermediate units. Large fluctuations in discharge rate were confined to intermediate and irregular units in decerebrates, but were not seen at all in anesthetized animals. The most promi

Upon feeling the urge to urinate, the urinary bladder contracts, the urethral sphincters relax and urine flows through the urethra. These actions are mediated by the micturition reflex. We investigated the hypothesis that vesical contraction is maintained by positive feedback through continuous flow of urine through the urethra, and that the cessation of urine flow aborts detrusor contraction. Normal saline was infused into the urinary bladders of 17 healthy volunteers (age 35.2 years+/-4.2(SD); ten women and seven men) at a rate of 100 ml/min. On urge, which occurred at a mean volume of 408.6

BACKGROUND: Wearable fitness technologies, like the Oura Ring (Oura Health Oy), provide physiological metrics, like sleep and heart rate data, to a growing user base of young adults. However, these technologies and connected mobile apps do not measure young adults' alcohol use that contributes to these metrics. Personalized feedback on the impact of alcohol on sleep and heart rate may boost motivation to reduce drinking among young adults.
OBJECTIVE: For this pilot randomized controlled trial, we evaluated the acceptability, feasibility, and perceived effectiveness of a wearable personalized

This review focuses on the neuroendocrine infrastructure of the adaptive response to chronic stress and on its concerted effects on behavior, the major endocrine axes and immune systems. Cytokines such as TNF-alpha, IL-1, and IL-6 and other humoral mediators of inflammation are potent activators of central stress-responsive neurotransmitter systems, constituting the afferent limb of a feedback loop from the immune/inflammatory system to the central nervous system. Steroid hormones influence a variety of neuroendocrine events, including brain development, sexual differentiation and reproduction

Electromyography (EMG) feedback, which records and visually presents muscle activity, has been widely employed to enhance motor control and support rehabilitation. While its effectiveness has been demonstrated across various conditions, most EMG feedback protocols have focused on modulating activity in individual muscles, with limited emphasis on promoting coordinated neuromuscular control. This study investigated the feasibility of enhancing neuromuscular coordination through feedback training designed to increase beta band (15-35 Hz) intramuscular coherence. Twenty-two healthy participants w

The stress system coordinates the adaptive responses of the organism to stressors of any kind.(1). The main components of the stress system are the corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and locus ceruleus-norepinephrine (LC/NE)-autonomic systems and their peripheral effectors, the pituitary-adrenal axis, and the limbs of the autonomic system. Activation of the stress system leads to behavioral and peripheral changes that improve the ability of the organism to adjust homeostasis and increase its chances for survival. The CRH and LC/NE systems stimulate arousal and attention, as well as the meso

Sex-specific prevalence rates in mental and physical disorders may be partly explained by sex differences in physiological stress responses. Neural networks that might be involved are those underlying feedback processing. Aim of the present EEG study was to investigate whether acute stress alters feedback processing, and whether stress effects differ between men and women. Male and female participants performed a gambling task, in a control and a stress condition. Stress was induced by exposing participants to a noise stressor. Brain activity was analyzed using both event-related potential and

In the present paper we present the outlines of a model that integrates autonomic, attentional, and affective systems into a functional and structural network that may help to guide us in our understanding of emotion regulation and dysregulation. We will emphasize the relationship between attentional regulation and affective processes and propose a group of underlying physiological systems that serve to integrate these functions in the service of self-regulation and adaptability of the organism. We will attempt to place this network in the context of dynamical systems models which involve feed
