Knowing and not knowing: practical reflections on video based feedback as part of neuro-rehabilitation in a case of persistent anosognosia for hemiplegia.

We report the case of DT, a man in his fifties who suffered a large right fronto-parietal hemorrhage, resulting in a dense left weakness and a persistent anosognosia for the resultant hemiplegia. DT engaged in several video-feedback sessions. Video feedback therapy has been successful in previously reported cases of anosognosia, resulting in immediate and lasting resolution. In the current case, similarly dramatic effects were observed, but with a subsequent recurrence of the anosognosic ideation. The present case sheds light on the interplay of neurologic and psychological mechanisms involved

Differential effects of instructed and objective feedback reliability on feedback-related brain activity.

Feedback reliability refers to the probability that the same decision leads to the same positive or negative feedback in the future. Previous research has shown that unreliable feedback is associated with attenuated feedback-related brain activity in ERPs, represented by a reduced fronto-central valence effect (feedback-related negativity or reward positivity) and a reduced feedback-related P3. Here, we asked whether these effects reflect top-down mechanisms or whether they can be explained by implicit feedback-outcome contingency learning. In two experiments, participants performed a trial-an

Effects of bogus genetic feedback on subjective and physiological responses to acute stress.

Recent advances in direct-to-consumer genetic testing have made individualized genetic risk feedback increasingly accessible, yet its psychological impact remains unclear. Initial findings suggest potential adverse outcomes, including increased worry and biased symptom reporting. Given that stress reactivity is partially heritable and a key risk factor for numerous stress-related conditions, understanding the influence of genetic feedback on stress reactivity is critical. In this study, we investigated how receiving bogus genetic feedback about stress vulnerability influences subjective, physi

Embodied musical experiences in the metaverse: a review of sensorimotor integration in VR-based music performance.

Virtual reality and the musical metaverse decompose traditional music performance into isolated visual, auditory, and tracking modules. While these immersive environments provide strong audiovisual feedback, they severely weaken the tactile and proprioceptive cues necessary for fine motor control. This review critically synthesizes empirical evidence from the past 5 years to evaluate whether audiovisual feedback can effectively compensate for the absence of haptic feedback. We analyze this cross-modal compensation through the lens of predictive processing and sensorimotor integration. Current

The feasibility and acceptability of a novel anxiety in bipolar disorder intervention compared to treatment as usual: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Comorbid anxiety is common in bipolar disorder (BD) and associated with worse clinical outcomes including increased suicidality. Despite effective psychological treatments for anxiety, research into treating anxiety in BD is underdeveloped. This paper describes a novel psychological intervention to address anxiety in context of bipolar disorder (AIBD). METHODS: Adults with BD and clinically significant anxiety symptoms were randomized to AIBD plus treatment as usual (TAU) or TAU alone. AIBD offered 10 sessions of psychological therapy using a formulation-based approach. Feasibilit

Integrating advice and experience: learning and decision making with social and nonsocial cues.

When making decisions, people typically gather information from both social and nonsocial sources, such as advice from others and direct experience. This research adapted a cognitive learning paradigm to examine the process by which people learn what sources of information are credible. When participants relied on advice alone to make decisions, their learning of source reliability proceeded in a manner analogous to traditional cue learning processes and replicated the established learning phenomena. However, when advice and nonsocial cues were encountered together as an established phenomenon

A Novel 5-Item Survey Tool to Assess Psychological Safety Among Graduate Medical Education Trainees.

BACKGROUND: Psychological safety is a critical component of effective learning and team performance in medical education. However, no tool with validity evidence currently exists to measure it specifically among graduate medical education (GME) trainees. OBJECTIVE: To develop a concise, trainee-centered survey tool to measure psychological safety in GME settings and to examine its content and internal structure among graduate medical trainees. METHODS: We created 9 candidate items based on existing literature and expert feedback. These were incorporated into an annual institution-wide traine

Acceptance and commitment therapy adapted for women with infertility: a pilot study of the Infertility ACTion program.

BACKGROUND: Approximately one in six couples are currently infertile, defined as unable to achieve pregnancy despite 12 or more months of active attempts to conceive. Experiencing infertility has been disproportionately associated with an array of psychological difficulties, particularly in women. However, currently available psychological interventions have had minimal benefits for distress, anxiety, or depression related to infertility. METHODS: A one-arm pilot study was conducted to test the acceptability of a newly created acceptance and commitment therapy-based self-guided program-Infert

Development of an Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Self-Help Program for Arabic-Speaking Immigrants: Mixed-Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Recent years have seen an increase in Arabic-speaking immigrants in Sweden and other European countries, with research showing this group to suffer from elevated levels of various forms of psychological disorders. There is a lack of treatment options for immigrants with mild to moderate mental health problems, with barriers including lack of accessible services and concerns that problems will not be understood by health care providers. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe the process of developing a transdiagnostic internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy self-help program in

A Sensor-Augmented Telerehabilitation System for Knee Osteoarthritis: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Neuromuscular, Functional, and Psychosocial Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent musculoskeletal condition associated with pain, functional limitation, and reduced quality of life. Telerehabilitation has emerged as a scalable intervention, yet many platforms lack neuromuscular feedback or objective-monitoring capabilities. The KneE-PAD system uniquely integrates electromyographic and inertial sensing to provide personalized feedback and remote performance tracking. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of a sensor-augmented telerehabilitation system (KneE-PAD) compared to conventional face-to-face physiothera

Optimizing Surgical Performance: Evidence-Based Feedback Strategies for Trainees and Junior Staff.

BACKGROUND: Feedback is fundamental to surgical training, underpinning skill acquisition, clinical decision-making, and the development of safe, competent surgeons. Despite its recognised importance, the consistent delivery of high-quality, effective feedback remains a significant challenge within busy clinical environments, including those in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ). This paper synthesises current evidence to provide practical guidance for surgical educators and trainees. METHODS/APPROACH: A literature review was conducted using major biomedical databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase) foc

Social comparison threat and coping: affective, cognitive and behavioral outcomes in response to false performance-related feedback.

BACKGROUND: Social comparisons shape our behavior. The general comparative processing model (gComp) suggests that evaluating one's attributes against salient upward social standards elicits motivational appraisal ranging from threat to challenge, each typically associated with corresponding pessimistic or optimistic coping responses. This, in turn, manifests in specific affective, cognitive, and behavioral responses. To our knowledge, this is the first study to provide an initial experimental test of gComp assumptions. METHODS: Participants completed a 2-back task framed as indicative of acad

Interpersonal distance affects advisors' responses to feedback on their advice: Evidence from event-related potentials.

Advisors typically receive two types of feedback: whether their advice is accepted and benefits the advisee. However, the effect of interpersonal distance on advisors' feedback responses remains unexplored. Therefore, to examine this association, we used an advice-giving task in which participants acted as advisors to either friends or strangers through event-related potentials (ERP). Participants received feedback reflecting whether their advice was accepted or rejected and the advisee's outcome (gains or losses). Participants' electroencephalograms were recorded when receiving feedback. Resu

The role of expectations and tailored feedback on the open-label Placebo effect.

Open label placebos (OLPs) refer to the non-deceptive administration of inert treatment. This pre-registered study (AsPrediced#139837) explored the role of expectations and tailored health feedback on the OLP effect using an automated online procedure. Healthy participants (N = 293) were randomised to a 10-day course of OLP pills with veridical feedback (OLP-Feedback: N = 92), without feedback (OLP-Standard: N = 105), or to a no-treatment control (NTC: N = 96). Participants were informed the pills were inert but may enhance wellbeing. Wellbeing was assessed at baseline, day-5 and day-10. Feedb

Dissociated in Anticipation, Common in Feedback: Neuroelectrophysiological Mechanisms of Social-Motivational Processing in Bivalent Evaluation Fears.

The Bivalent Evaluation Fear Hypothesis posits that fear of positive evaluation (FPE) and fear of negative evaluation (FNE) are two independent core characteristics of social anxiety. However, whether they rely on dissociable and/or shared neural mechanisms in the processing of social motivation remains unclear. By employing the Social Incentive Delay Task combined with EEG, we found that during the anticipation phase, individuals with high FPE exhibited "generalized over-engagement toward evaluative situations"-enhanced conflict monitoring (N2) and motivational preparation (CNV) in response t

Neural response to social feedback and internalizing dimensions.

BACKGROUND: A growing literature has examined the reward positivity (RewP), an event-related potential indicator of reward sensitivity, to social feedback. Research has indicated that a larger RewP to social rejection is associated with multiple internalizing problems, including anxiety, depression, and borderline personality. However, it is not clear whether the similar relationships are due to higher-order transdiagnostic dimensions of psychopathology. METHODS: A total of 222 participants, 18 to 35 years (mean [M] = 23.06, standard deviation [SD] = 3.82; 86% assigned sex female), who were o

Getting to the Heart of Masculinity Stressors: Masculinity Threats Induce Pronounced Vagal Withdrawal During a Speaking Task.

BACKGROUND: Previous work has found that traditional masculinity ideals and behaviors play a crucial role in higher rates of morbidity and mortality for men. Some studies also suggest that threatening men's masculinity can be stressful. Over time, this stress can weigh on men's cardiovascular and metabolic systems, which may contribute to men's higher rates of cardiometabolic health issues. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to explore how masculinity threats affect men's heart rate and heart rate variability reactivity (i.e., vagal withdrawal) to masculinity feedback on a social speaking

Real-time heart rate variability biofeedback amplitude during a large-scale digital mental health intervention differed by age, gender, and mental and physical health.

Heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) is an efficacious treatment for depression and anxiety. However, translation to digital mental health interventions (DMHI) requires computing and providing real-time HRVB metrics in a personalized and user-friendly fashion. To address these gaps, this study validates a real-time HRVB feedback algorithm and characterizes the association of the main algorithmic summary metric-HRVB amplitude-with demographic, psychological, and health factors. We analyzed HRVB data from 5158 participants in a therapist-supported DMHI incorporating slow-paced breathing to

Randomised controlled trial of the effects of physical activity feedback on awareness and behaviour in UK adults: the FAB study protocol [ISRCTN92551397].

BACKGROUND: While there are increasing data implicating poor recognition of physical inactivity as a potential barrier to healthy behaviour change, the efficacy of feedback to promote physical activity is uncertain. Using a randomised controlled trial nested within a population-based cohort study, we plan to test three variations of physical activity feedback against a control group. Our primary objective is to assess the efficacy of physical activity feedback in promoting physical activity behaviour change. Secondary objectives are to determine the influence of feedback on physical activity a
