Deep-DoPIo: Deep Learning for Shear Elasticity Prediction in Double-Profile Intersection Ultrasound.

We herein propose Deep-DoPIo, a deep learning-based framework that predicts shear elastic modulus from paired narrow- and wide-track displacement profiles generated by a single acoustic radiation force (ARF) push. Unlike the traditional double-profile intersection (DoPIo) ultrasound technique, which relates the intersection time (tint) between these profiles to shear modulus through a linear empirical model, Deep-DoPIo leverages neural networks to learn this mapping directly from the displacement data. Four architectures were evaluated: a feedforward neural network (FFNN), a 1-D convolutional

The Role of Top-Down Modulation in Shaping Sensory Processing Across Brain States: Implications for Consciousness.

Top-down, feedback projections account for a large portion of all connections between neurons in the thalamocortical system, yet their precise role remains the subject of much discussion. A large number of studies has focused on investigating how sensory information is transformed across hierarchically-distributed processing stages in a feedforward fashion, and computational models have shown that purely feedforward artificial neural networks can even outperform humans in pattern classification tasks. What is then the functional role of feedback connections? Several key roles have been identif

Neural primacy of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), a key structure in the executive system, has consistently emerged as a crucial element in the pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, the neural primacy of the DLPFC remains elusive in this disorder. We investigated the causal interaction (measured by effective connectivity) between the DLPFC and the remaining brain areas using bivariate Granger causality analysis of resting-state fMRI collected from 88 medication-free OCD patients and 88 matched healthy controls. Additionally, we conducted seed-based functional connectivity

Using Machine Learning for Analysis of Wideband Acoustic Immittance and Assessment of Middle Ear Function in Infants.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluating middle ear function is essential for interpreting screening results and prioritizing diagnostic referrals for infants with hearing impairments. Wideband Acoustic Immittance (WAI) technology offers a comprehensive approach by utilizing sound stimuli across various frequencies, providing a deeper understanding of ear physiology. However, current clinical practices often restrict WAI data analysis to peak information at specific frequencies, limiting its comprehensiveness. DESIGN: In this study, we developed five machine learning models-feedforward neural network, convolut

A deep-learning approach to predict bleeding risk over time in patients on extended anticoagulation therapy.

BACKGROUND: Thus far, all the clinical models developed to predict major bleeding in patients on extended anticoagulation therapy use the baseline predictors to stratify patients into different risk groups. Therefore, these models do not account for the clinical changes and events that occur after the baseline visit, which can modify risk of bleeding. However, it is difficult to develop predictive models from the routine follow-up clinical interviews, which are irregular sequences of multivariate time series data. OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate that deep learning can incorporate patient time seri

How multisensory neurons solve causal inference.

Sitting in a static railway carriage can produce illusory self-motion if the train on an adjoining track moves off. While our visual system registers motion, vestibular signals indicate that we are stationary. The brain is faced with a difficult challenge: is there a single cause of sensations (I am moving) or two causes (I am static, another train is moving)? If a single cause, integrating signals produces a more precise estimate of self-motion, but if not, one cue should be ignored. In many cases, this process of causal inference works without error, but how does the brain achieve it? Electr

Extending a Formal Model of Predictive Coding to Human Spoken Word Recognition.

There is a general consensus in theories of human speech recognition that humans engage in predictive processing during online speech processing. There are also claims that predictive processing is indicative of the operation of a predictive coding (PC) mechanism. PC is a generative, hierarchical feedback framework where feedback signals consist of input predictions, while feedforward signals consist primarily of prediction errors (PE). Some researchers have taken decreased neural signals when inputs conform to expectations as evidence for PC and claim that other possible explanatory framework

A Machine learning framework for calf muscle fatigue assessment using IMU sensors and EMG-Based labeling.

PURPOSE: Calf muscle fatigue detection is essential for sports performance monitoring, injury prevention, rehabilitation, and tasks involving prolonged standing or repetitive lower-limb movements. While surface Electromyography (sEMG) is commonly used for fatigue assessment, its sensitivity to noise, electrode placement, and motion artifacts limits its practicality for continuous monitoring. SCOPE: This study proposes an IMU-based approach for calf muscle fatigue detection, using sEMG only during the training phase for generating accurate fatigue labels. Comparison of Leptosira concentrations in two rivers within contrasting catchments in a leptospirosis hotspot.

Leptospirosis is a neglected disease that primarily impacts small islands in the South Pacific region. We compared pathogenic Leptospira concentration in rivers from two contrasting catchments in New Caledonia, a leptospirosis hot spot. The Tho and Foa catchments are located on the humid east coast and on the drier west coast, respectively. Similar concentrations of pathogenic Leptospira (pL) were found in both catchments although no extreme events were sampled in Foa and two cyclones were sampled in Tho. Moreover, significant pL concentrations were found in Foa during a 25 mm rainfall event a

Tonically active GABAergic neurons in the dorsal periaqueductal gray control instinctive escape in mice.

Escape behavior is a set of locomotor actions that move an animal away from threat. While these actions can be stereotyped, it is advantageous for survival that they are flexible.1,2,3 For example, escape probability depends on predation risk and competing motivations,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11 and flight to safety requires continuous adjustments of trajectory and must terminate at the appropriate place and time.12,13,14,15,16 This degree of flexibility suggests that modulatory components, like inhibitory networks, act on the neural circuits controlling instinctive escape.17,18,19,20,21,22 In mice, the

DeepChestGNN: A Comprehensive Framework for Enhanced Lung Disease Identification through Advanced Graphical Deep Features.

Lung diseases are the third-leading cause of mortality in the world. Due to compromised lung function, respiratory difficulties, and physiological complications, lung disease brought on by toxic substances, pollution, infections, or smoking results in millions of deaths every year. Chest X-ray images pose a challenge for classification due to their visual similarity, leading to confusion among radiologists. To imitate those issues, we created an automated system with a large data hub that contains 17 datasets of chest X-ray images for a total of 71,096, and we aim to classify ten different dis

Alpha5 nicotine acetylcholine receptor subunit promotes intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma metastasis.

Neurotransmitter-initiated signaling pathway were reported to play an important role in regulating the malignant phenotype of tumor cells. Cancer cells could exhibit a "neural addiction" property and build up local nerve networks to achieve an enhanced neurotransmitter-initiated signaling through nerve growth factor-mediated axonogenesis. Targeting the dysregulated nervous systems might represent a novel strategy for cancer treatment. However, whether intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) could build its own nerve networks and the role of neurotransmitters in the progression ICC remains largel

Visually-guided correction of hand reaching movements: The neurophysiological bases in the cerebral cortex.

The ability of human and non-human primates to make fast corrections to hand movement trajectories after a sudden shift in the target's location is a key feature of visuo-motor behavior. In healthy individuals, hand movements smoothly adapt to a change in target location without needing to complete the movement to the first target location, as typical of parietal patients. This finding indicates that the nervous system continuously monitors the visual scene and is able to integrate new information in order to produce an efficient motor response. In this paper, we review the kinematics, reactio

Dynamic brain communication underwriting face pareidolia.

Face pareidolia is a tendency to seeing faces in nonface images that reflects high tuning to a face scheme. Yet, studies of the brain networks underwriting face pareidolia are scarce. Here, we examined the time course and dynamic topography of gamma oscillatory neuromagnetic activity while administering a task with nonface images resembling a face. Images were presented either with canonical orientation or with display inversion that heavily impedes face pareidolia. At early processing stages, the peaks in gamma activity (40 to 45 Hz) to images either triggering or not face pareidolia originat

A systematic analysis of the joint effects of ganglion cells, lagged LGN cells, and intercortical inhibition on spatiotemporal processing and direction selectivity.

Simple cells in the visual cortex process spatial as well as temporal information of the visual stream and enable the perception of motion information. Previous work suggests different mechanisms associated with direction selectivity, such as a temporal offset in thalamocortical input stream through lagged and non-lagged cells of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), or solely from intercortical inhibition, or through a baseline selectivity provided by the thalamocortical connection tuned by intercortical inhibition. While there exists a large corpus of models for spatiotemporal receptive fiel

Sensitivity of Spiking Neural Networks Due to Input Perturbation.

Background: To investigate the behavior of spiking neural networks (SNNs), the sensitivity of input perturbation serves as an effective metric for assessing the influence on the network output. However, existing methods fall short in evaluating the sensitivity of SNNs featuring biologically plausible leaky integrate-and-fire (LIF) neurons due to the intricate neuronal dynamics during the feedforward process. Methods: This paper first defines the sensitivity of a temporal-coded spiking neuron (SN) as the deviation between the perturbed and unperturbed output under a given input perturbation wit

Graph theoretic and machine learning approaches in molecular property prediction of bladder cancer therapeutics.

This work introduces a hybrid computational approach in which degree-based topological descriptors are harnessed with the aid of advanced regression models and artificial neural networks (ANNs) to predict the crucial physicochemical properties of 17 drugs for the treatment of bladder cancer. Each molecule is assigned a molecular graph, from which a series of topological descriptors such as Zagreb indices, Randic index, Atom Bond Connectivity (ABC), and Symmetric Division Degree (SSD)are computed. These indices are used as input features by various regression models along with linear, cubic, an

Optimising pandemic response through vaccination strategies using neural networks.

Epidemic risk assessment poses inherent challenges, with traditional approaches often failing to balance health outcomes and economic constraints. This paper presents a data-driven decision support tool that models epidemiological dynamics and optimises vaccination strategies to control disease spread while minimising economic losses. The proposed economic-epidemiological framework comprises three phases: modelling, optimising, and analysing. First, a stochastic SVEI3RD compartmental model with eight state variables captures epidemic dynamics, stratifying infections by severity to enable detai

Brainstem-cortical functional connectivity for speech is differentially challenged by noise and reverberation.

Everyday speech perception is challenged by external acoustic interferences that hinder verbal communication. Here, we directly compared how different levels of the auditory system (brainstem vs. cortex) code speech and how their neural representations are affected by two acoustic stressors: noise and reverberation. We recorded multichannel (64 ch) brainstem frequency-following responses (FFRs) and cortical event-related potentials (ERPs) simultaneously in normal hearing individuals to speech sounds presented in mild and moderate levels of noise and reverb. We matched signal-to-noise and direc
