Feeding behavior of feedlot lambs fed diets with different energy and protein sources.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the replacement of ground corn by crude glycerin and soybean meal by cottonseed cake, in association or not, on feedlot lambs' feeding behavior. Thirty-two non-castrated crossbred ½ Dorper ½ Santa Inês lambs, with an average body weight of 18.52 ± 3.24 kg (mean ± standard deviation), were distributed in a completely randomized design, into four treatments and eight replicates per treatment, in a 2 × 2 factorial scheme. Four experimental diets were tested with different sources or combinations of energy and protein ingredients in the concentrate, respe

Modulation of hypothalamic S6K1 and S6K2 alters feeding behavior and systemic glucose metabolism.

The mTOR/S6Ks signaling is one of the intracellular pathways important for metabolic control, acting both peripherally and centrally. In the hypothalamus, mTOR/S6Ks axis mediates the action of leptin and insulin and can modulate the expression of neuropeptides. We analyzed the role of different S6Ks isoforms in the hypothalamic regulation of metabolism. We observed decreased food intake and decreased expression of agouti-related peptide (AgRP) following intracerebroventricular (icv) injections of adenoviral-mediated overexpression of three different S6Ks isoforms. Moreover, mice overexpressing

Control of Feeding Behavior by Cerebral Ventricular Volume Transmission of Melanin-Concentrating Hormone.

Classical mechanisms through which brain-derived molecules influence behavior include neuronal synaptic communication and neuroendocrine signaling. Here we provide evidence for an alternative neural communication mechanism that is relevant for food intake control involving cerebroventricular volume transmission of the neuropeptide melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH). Results reveal that the cerebral ventricles receive input from approximately one-third of MCH-producing neurons. Moreover, MCH cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels increase prior to nocturnal feeding and following chemogenetic activat

GYY4137 Promotes Mice Feeding Behavior via Arcuate Nucleus Sulfur-Sulfhydrylation and AMPK Activation.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an endogenous gaseous molecule and plays important biological and neurochemical roles in many processes such as the neural activity and immunity. The arcuate nucleus (ARC) of hypothalamus is a control center for appetite and energy metabolism. AMPK is a gage kinase in the monitoring of energy status and regulation of energy metabolism, and it can be activated by H2S via CaMKKβ/AMPK pathway. But the role of H2S in ARC and appetite has not been reported. Here we studied the orexigenic effect of H2S and the mechanisms by means of GYY4137, a water soluble and slow-releasi

Feeding behavior of Mimomyia (Etorleptiomyia) luzonensis (Ludlow, 1905) (Diptera, Culicidae) in Peninsular Malaysia.

Mosquitoes are vectors of various human diseases in the tropics including yellow fever, dengue, malaria and West Nile virus. Mosquitoes can act as vectors between wildlife and humans, which is particularly important for diseases where wild animals serve as reservoirs of parasites in the absence of human infections. Research has mainly focused on the medical impacts of Anopheles, Aedes, Mansonia and Culex, however, very little attention has been directed towards other mosquito genera, especially those which act as vectors of diseases of wildlife. We have observed adults of Mimomyia (Etorleptiom

Rumination and its relationship to feeding and lying behavior in Holstein dairy cows.

The objective of this study was to describe the relationship between rumination and feeding and lying behavior in dairy cows. Rumination time was monitored electronically using HR-Tags (SCR Engineers Ltd., Netanya, Israel). Feeding time and dry matter intake (DMI) were monitored using Insentec feed bins (Insentec BV, Marknesse, the Netherlands). All measures were collected in 2-h periods for 42 mature Holstein cows for a minimum of 9 d in the early dry period. Pearson correlation was used to describe associations, among 2-h periods within cow, first examining the relationship within a single p

Effect of repeated administration of prolactin releasing peptide on feeding behavior in rats.

Prolactin releasing peptide (PrRP) has been reported to reduce food intake in rats. We tested the effect of i.c.v. administration of PrRP-31 on food intake in both food deprived and free-feeding rats. We did not find any effect of PrRP-31 on food intake after single injections of up to an 8-nmol dose, but observed a marked decrease in food intake and body weight in rats that received a repeated twice daily administration of 8 nmol of PrRP-31. This effect was associated with an adverse behavioral pattern, indicating that the repeated high doses of the peptide caused non-specific effects inducin

CRF effect on thyroid function is not mediated by feeding behavior in goldfish.

In the present study we examined the effects of acute corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) administration and refeeding treatment on glucose levels and thyroid hormones (plasma levels and thyroid contents) in 48-h food-deprived goldfish. Central CRF administration (2 micrograms) decreased food intake and the thyroid T3 free fraction, without significantly modifying either thyroid hormones bound fractions (T3 and T4) or plasma glucose levels. Subsequently, we tested whether CRF affects thyroid activity by itself, or whether this effect is mediated by CRF-induced feeding reduction. CRF treatment

Variation in Social Feeding Behaviors and Interactions Among Caenorhabditis Nematodes.

The ability to respond to stimuli and environmental cues is essential for higher order organisms to survive and reproduce and requires a neuronal network that can integrate cues and execute behavioral responses. Evolution of behaviors occurs ubiquitously in most established ecological niches, even among closely related species. To uncover the genetic and neuronal drivers of evolving behaviors, we have taken advantage of the large and relatively ancient divergence in the Caenorhabditis genus to ask how different Caenorhabditis nematodes respond to environmental stimuli and whether behavioral tr

Breed differences in oral behaviors in feed-restricted dairy heifers.

Holsteins and Jerseys, the 2 most prominent dairy breeds in the United States, differ in many regards. They have not been evaluated for differences in oral behavior performance, despite anecdotal evidence that Jerseys perform more abnormal behaviors than Holsteins. As abnormal behaviors can indicate compromised welfare, we evaluated whether breed differences existed in year-old heifers. Because many oral behaviors could be expressed in abnormal ways, we also sought to describe performance of a wide range of behaviors and whether these varied among individuals. We studied 42 pair-housed heifers

Suckling, Feeding, and Swallowing: Behaviors, Circuits, and Targets for Neurodevelopmental Pathology.

All mammals must suckle and swallow at birth, and subsequently chew and swallow solid foods, for optimal growth and health. These initially innate behaviors depend critically upon coordinated development of the mouth, tongue, pharynx, and larynx as well as the cranial nerves that control these structures. Disrupted suckling, feeding, and swallowing from birth onward-perinatal dysphagia-is often associated with several neurodevelopmental disorders that subsequently alter complex behaviors. Apparently, a broad range of neurodevelopmental pathologic mechanisms also target oropharyngeal and crania

Influence of maternal feeding goals and practices on children's eating behaviors.

Parents are highly influential in shaping their children's dietary habits. This study examined whether negative feeding practices mediated the relationship between feeding goals (health and convenience) and children's eating behaviors. One hundred ninety-two mothers (mean age = 34.2; mean BMI = 27.0) of 7-11 year old children participated via Amazon's Mechanical Turk. Results showed that negative feeding practices fully mediated the relationship between convenience feeding goals and children's eating behaviors (goals to healthy/unhealthy eating behaviors: β = -0.08/.09, n.s.; goals to feeding

Packing and Problematic Feeding Behaviors in CHARGE Syndrome: A Qualitative Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To understand packing and problematic feeding behaviors during mealtime in individuals with CHARGE syndrome. Packing, or holding food in one's cheeks without swallowing, is an adverse feeding behavior that has been described in children with autism and Down syndrome, and in those transitioning from tube to oral feeding. It has never been described in detail in CHARGE syndrome, a genetic disorder with a high prevalence of feeding difficulties, tube feeding, and otorhinolaryngological issues. METHODS: A mixed methods approach used descriptive and qualitative content analysis of inter

Sensory profile in infants and toddlers with behavioral insomnia and/or feeding disorders.

BACKGROUND: Sleep and feeding difficulties are two common disorders in early childhood. It has been shown that feeding difficulties are more common among children with sleep disorders and vice versa. Since a child's characteristics play a substantial role in these two conditions, we aimed to investigate the sensory profile of infants and toddlers with behavioral insomnia (BI) or feeding disorders (FDs) in comparison with healthy age-matched controls. METHODS: Children aged 7-36 months with BI or FD were recruited from the sleep and feeding disorders clinics. Healthy controls were recruited fr

[Breast- and bottle-feeding in preterm infants: a comparison of behavioral cues].

BACKGROUND: Developmental care has been broadly applied to identify the behavioral cues and care needs of preterm infants. Past studies indicate a significantly higher level of physical distress in bottle-fed preterm infants than in preterm infants who are breastfed. However, no evidence has yet been reported that supports the influence of feeding methods on behavioral cues. PURPOSE: This study compares differences in the type and frequency of behavioral cues between breast- and bottle-fed preterm infants. METHODS: A comparison study design and secondary data analysis method were used to ass

Brain endocannabinoid control of metabolic and non-metabolic feeding behaviors.

The central endocannabinoid (eCB) system in brain shows a crucial role in the regulation of feeding behaviors, influencing both metabolic and non-metabolic mechanisms of appetite control, which has been paid much attention. Although there are already many review articles discussing eCB modulation of feeding behaviors, our paper attempts to summarize the recent advancements through synapses, circuits, and network in brain. Our focus is on the dual role of eCB signalling in regulating metabolic energy balance and hedonic reward-related feeding. In the context of metabolic regulation of feeding b

Impact of timing of feed delivery on the behavior and productivity of dairy cows.

The objective of this work was to assess the effect of timing of feed delivery on the behavior and productivity of cows milked 3 times per day. Twelve lactating Holstein dairy cows (4 primiparous and 8 multiparous), milked 3 times per day (at 1400, 2100, and 0700 h), were individually assigned and exposed to each of 2 treatments (over 21-d periods) in a replicated crossover design. Treatments were the manipulation of timing of TMR delivery, 2 times per day, in relation to milking time: (1) feeding at milking time (at 1400 and 0700 h), and (2) feeding halfway between milking times (at 1730 and

Hypothalamic Agrp neurons drive stereotypic behaviors beyond feeding.

The nervous system evolved to coordinate flexible goal-directed behaviors by integrating interoceptive and sensory information. Hypothalamic Agrp neurons are known to be crucial for feeding behavior. Here, however, we show that these neurons also orchestrate other complex behaviors in adult mice. Activation of Agrp neurons in the absence of food triggers foraging and repetitive behaviors, which are reverted by food consumption. These stereotypic behaviors that are triggered by Agrp neurons are coupled with decreased anxiety. NPY5 receptor signaling is necessary to mediate the repetitive behavi
