Determination of tetracyclines in animal feeds in the presence of other drugs by thin-layer chromatography and microbiological method.

This method was developed to separate, detect, and quantitate oxytetracycline (OTC) or chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC.HCl) in animal feeds in the presence of 11 other drugs: 3 nitrofurans, 2 macrolide antibiotics, 3 sulfonamides, 2 coccidiostatics, and 1 antibacterial growth promoter. OTC or CTC.HCl was separated from coexisting drugs and detected by thin-layer chromatography, then quantitated microbiologically by the agar diffusion method. Analysis of 125 experimental animal feed samples fortified at 5 levels (7.5-400 ppm) with OTC or CTC.HCl and at 1 level (50 ppm) with the rest of the

Impedance shaping based stabilization control method for DC Micro-grid Feed-forward compensation.

The ports of the bi-directional converter exhibit negative impedance characteristics when the energy storage unit of a DC microgrid is operating in charging mode. This can decrease the system's stability margin, potentially leading to oscillation instability. To address this issue, we propose a feed-forward compensation control method based on impedance shaping. This involves designing a transfer function within the current feed-forward loop of the energy storage converter to ensure that the current reference value follows changes in the bus voltage. Selecting an appropriate time constant ensu

A Confirmatory Method Based on HPLC-MS/MS for the Detection and Quantification of Residue of Tetracyclines in Nonmedicated Feed.

The Commission Regulation 574/2011/EC set up maximum levels of coccidiostats and histomonostats in nonmedicated feed as a consequence of carry-over during manufacturing. Carry-over takes place from medicated to nonmedicated feed during feed production. Similar contamination could also occur for other pharmaceuticals such as tetracyclines, a group of antibiotics commonly employed in food production animal. The objective of this work is to present a simple and fast method for the simultaneous detection of four tetracyclines (chlortetracycline, doxycycline, oxytetracycline, and tetracycline) in n

Impact of feeding method on diaphragm electrical activity and central apnea in preterm infants (FEAdi study).

BACKGROUND: In preterm infants, it is unknown whether feeding affects neural breathing pattern. OBJECTIVES: By measuring the diaphragm electrical activity (Edi) waveform, we evaluated the effect of enteral feeding and compared the effects of feeding methods on neural breathing pattern and central apnea in very low birth weight preterm infants. METHODS: In a prospective, randomized, crossover study, ten non-ventilated preterm infants with birth weights<1250g and tolerating full feeds were randomized to either bolus feeding (BF) or slow infusion feeding (SF) over 90min, followed by crossover t

Mirtazapine treatment of diabetic gastroparesis as a novel method to reduce tube-feed residual: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Gastroparesis is a common motility disorder that is characterized by delayed gastric emptying in the absence of mechanical obstruction. Diabetes, along with other neuromuscular and infiltrating disorders, can predispose individuals to an increased risk of developing gastroparesis. Gastroparesis can be easily diagnosed through gastric emptying studies but is usually difficult to successfully treat. Therapy usually begins with pro-kinetic and anti-emetic agents. CASE PRESENTATION: Our patient was an 87-year-old African-American woman who was a nursing home resident, with a history

Estimating the feeding rate of the bedbug Cimex lectularius in an infested room: an inexpensive method and a case study.

The common bedbug, Cimex lectularius L. (Hemiptera: Cimicidae), is a globally re-emerging pest that is playing an increasing role in legal disputes and compensation claims as a result of its unpleasant feeding activity. However, there is little information about the feeding frequency of bedbugs outside controlled laboratory cultures. Here, we present a simple method of estimating the average time since the last bloodmeal of individual female bedbugs in a single sampling event, applicable to a single bedbug harbourage or an entire room. Using the temperature-dependent rate of decrease in the ab

Development of a rapid identification method for multiple antibiotic fermentation residues in feed based on real-time PCR.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic fermentation residues, which contain antibiotic remnants and other potentially hazardous components, present increasing risks when illegally incorporated into animal feed. Their addition can promote the spread of antimicrobial resistance, drug accumulation, and ultimately threaten food safety and public health. Although regulatory control is required, existing analytical methods suffer from poor specificity, low accuracy, and limited applicability in practical settings. Therefore, there remains an urgent need for a rapid, accurate, and practical detection method to ident

A simple, novel laparoscopic feeding jejunostomy technique to prevent bowel obstruction after esophagectomy: the "curtain method".

BACKGROUND: Feeding jejunostomy (FJ) is a common treatment to support patients with esophageal cancer after esophagectomy. However, severe FJ-related complications, such as bowel obstruction, occasionally occur. We investigated the ability of our simple, novel FJ technique, the "curtain method," to prevent bowel obstruction. METHODS: In laparoscopic surgery, the main mechanism of bowel obstruction involves torsion of the mesentery accompanied by migration of the intestine across the fixed FJ through the space surrounded by a triangle comprising the ligament of Treitz, fixed FJ, and spleen rat

Energy and Fat Intake for Preterm Infants Fed Donor Milk Is Significantly Impacted by Enteral Feeding Method.

BACKGROUND: Pasteurized donor milk is the recommended supplement for preterm infants when mother's milk volumes are insufficient. Compared with mother's milk, the macronutrient content of donor milk is thought to be lower due to pasteurization and additional container changes during processing. Given that poor growth is concerning for preterm infants, it is important to understand how processing and feeding methods influence the nutrition composition of donor milk feeds. The research aim of this study was to determine the effects of pasteurization and feeding method on the macronutrient and en

Development of an automated method of detecting stereotyped feeding events in multisensor data from tagged rorqual whales.

The introduction of animal-borne, multisensor tags has opened up many opportunities for ecological research, making previously inaccessible species and behaviors observable. The advancement of tag technology and the increasingly widespread use of bio-logging tags are leading to large volumes of sometimes extremely detailed data. With the increasing quantity and duration of tag deployments, a set of tools needs to be developed to aid in facilitating and standardizing the analysis of movement sensor data. Here, we developed an observation-based decision tree method to detect feeding events in da

Quantification of the level of fat-soluble vitamins in feed based on the novel microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) method.

BACKGROUND: Simultaneous quantification of liposoluble vitamins is not a new area of interest, since these compounds co-determine the nutritional quality of food and feed, a field widely explored in the human and animal diet. However, the development of appropriate methods is still a matter of concern, especially when the vitamin composition is highly complex, as is the case with feed designated for laboratory animals, representing a higher health and microbiological status. RESULTS: A method combining microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography (MEEKC) with liquid-liquid extraction was devel

An improved LC-MS/MS method for simultaneous determination of deoxynivalenol and its modified forms in grains and feed.

This study developed an improved LC-MS/MS method for the simultaneous quantification of deoxynivalenol (DON) and its five modified forms (DON-3-G, DON-15-G, 3-ACDON, 15-ACDON, DOM-1) in grains and feeds. Key innovations include diagnostic MRM transitions that resolve co-eluting isomers, along with an optimized ESI- mode that prevents false DON quantification from glucoside adducts. Additionally, a simplified extraction protocol using 1% acetic acid-79% acetonitrile effectively suppressed matrix effects (-6 to -22%) without requiring additional cleanup, thereby enhancing the reliability of curr
