Eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and other specified feeding and eating disorder) are not only common mental health disorders but they also affect an individual's physical, psychological, and social well-being, with high impact and burden. Importantly, previous research has found that eating disorders have high mortality, higher than many other psychiatric disorders. Here, we discuss findings from Castellini and colleagues in the context of previous studies.

Eating disorders are a heterogeneous group of complex psychiatric disorders characterized by abnormal eating behaviours that lead to a high rate of morbidity, or even death, if underestimated and untreated. The main disorders enlisted in the chapter of the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders-5 dedicated to "Feeding and Eating Disorders" are: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. Even though these abnormal behaviours are mostly diagnosed during childhood, interesting cases of late-life eating disorders have been reported in literature. In this review, thes

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorder recovery content is widely circulated on TikTok. We thematically analyzed recovery content on TikTok, examined its associations with symptom severity among individuals with eating disorders, and assessed its co-occurrence with pro-eating disorder material within their TikTok feeds.
METHOD: Study 1 was a qualitative reflexive thematic analysis of 250 TikTok posts containing eating disorder recovery hashtags. Study 2 was a quantitative examination of TikTok usage data and symptom severity collected from 42 individuals with eating disorders over a one-month period.

Eating disorders are disabling, deadly, and costly mental disorders that considerably impair physical health and disrupt psychosocial functioning. Disturbed attitudes towards weight, body shape, and eating play a key role in the origin and maintenance of eating disorders. Eating disorders have been increasing over the past 50 years and changes in the food environment have been implicated. All health-care providers should routinely enquire about eating habits as a component of overall health assessment. Six main feeding and eating disorders are now recognised in diagnostic systems: anorexia ner

The proposed DSM-5 classification scheme for eating disorders includes both major and minor changes to the existing DSM-IV diagnostic criteria. It is not known what effect these modifications will have on the ability to make reliable diagnoses. Two studies were conducted to evaluate the short-term test-retest reliability of the proposed DSM-5 eating disorder diagnoses: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and feeding and eating conditions not elsewhere classified. Participants completed two independent telephone interviews with research assessors (n=70 Study 1; n=55 Study

The central endocannabinoid (eCB) system in brain shows a crucial role in the regulation of feeding behaviors, influencing both metabolic and non-metabolic mechanisms of appetite control, which has been paid much attention. Although there are already many review articles discussing eCB modulation of feeding behaviors, our paper attempts to summarize the recent advancements through synapses, circuits, and network in brain. Our focus is on the dual role of eCB signalling in regulating metabolic energy balance and hedonic reward-related feeding. In the context of metabolic regulation of feeding b

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated health and development, temperament, body satisfaction, nutritional status, and mealtime interaction patterns in offspring (ages 1-4) of women with current or past anorexia and/or bulimia nervosa in comparison to control children.
METHOD: Information was gathered via maternal report and interview, health and development records, a 3 day food diary, and a videotaped lunchtime interaction.
RESULTS: Children of women with eating disorders had significantly lower birth weights and lengths than control children. There were no differences observed in childhood temperament o

Binge eating (BE) is often triggered by stress, dieting, and adverse environmental factors, and represents a common precursor to eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and BE disorder. Stress-induced hyperphagia captures core features of binge-like feeding and shares neurobiological substrates will BE disorder, making it a useful behavioral readout for dissecting underlying mechanisms. We used the genetically tractable worm Caenorhabditis elegans to examine how starvation and stress interact to drive feeding, quantifying pharyngeal pumping as a measure of food intake. Combined starvation

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We aimed to accrue recent evidence exploring effects of modern online activities (e.g., Internet use) on feeding and eating disorder symptoms, and related traits. We examined available evidence to ascertain any direct influences from online activities on feeding and eating disorders, thereby shedding light on putative mechanisms by which those influences may occur.
RECENT FINDINGS: Many facets of problematic usage of the Internet correlate cross sectionally with eating disorder and related psychopathology. There is evidence to suggest that significant effects do exist in th

Bulimia nervosa (BN) and Anorexia Nervosa (AN) are currently classified as eating disorders (ED). Both disorders are the product of complex interaction between physiological and psychological and social processes; they are characterized by abnormal eating behavior. However, patients with BN differ from AN in their nutritional state and response of treatment with serotonin-selective reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) as well as frequency of comorbidity of mood and anxiety disorders. Although biological mechanisms of both BN and AN are largely unknown, excess of both feeding-stimulatory and feeding inhib

Background: In phenylketonuria (PKU), the lifelong phenylalanine (Phe)-restricted diet may contribute to altered feeding behaviours and disordered eating. The true prevalence of disordered eating and eating disorders remains uncertain, partly because validated PKU-specific assessment tools are lacking. This systematic review aimed to identify, appraise, and synthesise the evidence on disordered eating and eating disorders in PKU. Methods: Four electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane) were searched from inception to 24 February 2026. English-language studies reporting

Eating disorders are life-interrupting psychiatric conditions with high morbidity and mortality, yet the basic mechanisms underlying these conditions are understudied compared with other psychiatric disorders. In this opinion, we suggest that recent knowledge gleaned from genomic and neuroimaging investigations of eating disorders in humans presents a rich opportunity to sharpen animal models of eating disorders and to identify neural mechanisms that contribute to the risk and maintenance of these conditions. Our article reflects the state of the science, with a primary focus on anorexia nervo

Feeding is a fundamental process for basic survival and is influenced by genetics and environmental stressors. Recent advances in our understanding of behavioral genetics have provided a profound insight on several components regulating eating patterns. However, our understanding of eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating, is still poor. The animal model is an essential tool in the investigation of eating behaviors and their pathological forms, yet development of an appropriate animal model for eating disorders still remains challenging due to our limited

This article describes a range of problem feeding and eating presentations seen in infants and children. In diagnostic terms some fall under the category of "feeding disorder," whereas others are childhood presentations of the eating disorders "anorexia nervosa," "bulimia nervosa," and atypical forms of these. Several other commonly occurring presentations that are difficult to fit into existing diagnostic categories are additionally described here, including "selective eating," "food avoidance emotional disorder," "food phobias," "functional dysphagia," and "food refusal."

OBJECTIVE: The eating behavior of individuals with eating disorders has been examined in laboratory settings over the last 30 years. In this focused review, we build on prior research and highlight several feeding laboratory paradigms that have successfully demonstrated quantifiable and observable behavioral disturbances, and thereby add rigor and reproducibility to the examination of disturbances of eating behavior. This review describes the measures commonly obtained via these laboratory techniques. Supporting Information Appendices with detailed information about implementation are provided

Continuous automated weighing of food while subjects ate was used to test the hypothesis that failure to slow eating rate during a meal indicated a deficient response to satiety signals in obese patients. Cumulative intake curves were fitted to a quadratic equation. The physical form of the food and its palatability were a greater influence on the equation's parameters than the subjects' body weights, and the hypothesis was abandoned for several years (1984-1993). The hypothesis was revived with modifications when we discovered disturbances in eating behavior in patients with bulimia nervosa.

Treatment of one behavior in the chain of consumption might be associated with the emergence of other problematic behaviors. For example, some children with feeding disorders expel liquid. Moreover, the form in which children expel liquid might vary and influence whether a treatment to reduce liquid expulsion will result in clinically meaningful outcomes. In the current investigation, we first identified topographies of liquid expulsion (e.g., forceful, run out) for each child. We then compared and evaluated the effects of 2 procedures, a modified chin prompt and re-presentation, on the liquid
