Fatal disseminated toxoplasmosis in an immunocompetent cat.

A 10-year-old domestic short hair cat was referred for investigation of anorexia and polydipsia of 3 days' duration. Clinically the cat was obese, pyrexic (39.8 °C), had acute abdominal pain and severe bilirubinuria. Haematology and serum biochemistry revealed severe panleukopenia, thrombocytopenia, markedly elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and five-fold increased pre-prandial bile acids. Ultrasonographic evaluation of the abdomen did not identify any abnormalities. Serum tests for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) were negative. Broad-spectrum antibi

Neurologic and cutaneous infection by Clostridium piliforme in a kitten with systemic Tyzzer disease.

Tyzzer disease (TD) is a highly fatal condition of animals caused by Clostridium piliforme and characterized pathologically by enteritis, hepatitis, myocarditis, and occasionally encephalitis. Cutaneous lesions have been reported only rarely in animals with TD, and infection of the nervous system has not been described in cats, to our knowledge. We describe here neurologic and cutaneous infection by C. piliforme in a shelter kitten with systemic manifestations of TD and coinfection with feline panleukopenia virus. Systemic lesions included necrotizing typhlocolitis, hepatitis, myocarditis, and

Ferret Pediatrics.

Ferrets are bred to be pets, utilized for hunting, and as laboratory models. Despite the fact that ferrets in some areas of the world are neutered by the breeder before entering the pet trade, the importance of pediatric management should not be overlooked. Pregnant, whelping, and lactating jills should be closely monitored and kept in a quiet, stress-free environment. Hand-rearing baby kits is very challenging due to their requirement for ferret milk. Minimizing maternal stress and disease can prevent the need to hand rear kits. Infectious diseases in juvenile ferrets include canine distemper

Recombinase Polymerase Amplification Assay-A Simple, Fast and Cost-Effective Alternative to Real Time PCR for Specific Detection of Feline Herpesvirus-1.

Feline herpesvirus 1 (FHV-1), an enveloped dsDNA virus, is one of the major pathogens of feline upper respiratory tract disease (URTD) and ocular disease. Currently, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) remains the gold standard diagnostic tool for FHV-1 infection but is relatively expensive, requires well-equipped laboratories and is not suitable for field tests. Recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA), an isothermal gene amplification technology, has been explored for the molecular diagnosis of infectious diseases. In this study, an exo-RPA assay for FHV-1 detection was developed and validated

Role of Feline Coronavirus as Contributor to Diarrhea in Cats from Breeding Catteries.

(1) Background: Feline coronavirus infection (FCoV) is common in multi-cat environments. A role of FCoV in causing diarrhea is often assumed, but has not been proven. The aim of this study was to evaluate an association of FCoV infection with diarrhea in multi-cat environments. (2) Methods: The study included 234 cats from 37 catteries. Fecal samples were analyzed for FCoV RNA by reverse transcriptase quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Potential co-infections were determined by applying a qPCR panel on different potential enteropathogens and fecal flotation. A fecal scoring syst

Response of feral cats to vaccination at the time of neutering.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether administration of inactivated virus or modified-live virus (MLV) vaccines to feral cats at the time of neutering induces protective serum antiviral antibody titers. DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 61 feral cats included in a trap-neuter-return program in Florida. PROCEDURES: Each cat received vaccines against feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), feline herpes virus (FHV), feline calicivirus (FCV), FeLV, and rabies virus (RV). Immediately on completion of surgery, vaccines that contained inactivated RV and FeLV antigens and either MLV or inactivated FPV, FHV,

Disentangling the link between supplemental feeding, population density, and the prevalence of pathogens in urban stray cats.

BACKGROUND: Supplemental feeding of free-roaming animals, including wildlife and feral or stray animals, is well known to have a substantial impact on various aspects of animal ecology including habitat use, activity patterns, and host-pathogen interactions. Among them, an increased population density (PD) of animals receiving supplemental food raises concerns regarding the transmission of pathogens in these host populations. The primary aim of this study was to investigate how supplemental feeding is associated with host PD and prevalence of pathogens with different transmission modes in urba

Much of the increased IgG in Aleutian disease of mink is viral antibody.

Aleutian disease (AD) is caused by a persistent infection of mink with an autonomous parvovirus. Chronically infected mink develop widespread plasmacytosis, a marked elevation of their serum IgG, and immune complex disease. A substantial fraction of the IgG in the serum of mink with Aleutian disease may be specifically absorbed by monolayer cell cultures infected with Aleutian disease virus. The maximum percentage of absorption of IgG found was 81% in a mink with 5.4 g/dl of IgG. Mink with the monoclonal gammopathy of Aleutian disease had a particularly large percentage of the IgG absorbed. Th

Study of an attenuated strain of feline infectious enteritis (panleucopaenia) virus. I. Spread of vaccine virus from cats affected with feline respiratory disease.

In the course of developing a living attenuated feline infectious enteritis (panleucopaenia) vaccine, it was found that respiratory disease-infected cats newly inoculated with this vaccine spread vaccine virus to respiratory disease-infected in-contact controls. These in-contact controls were able to infect other cats with which they were placed in contact so that after five natural transmissions in this way and two oral administrations and subsequent re-isolations, reversion to virulence became evident. It is clear that before general release of a new living feline infectious enteritis vaccin

High prevalence of non-productive FeLV infection in necropsied cats and significant association with pathological findings.

Applying a combination of semi-nested PCR and immunohistology (IHC), the presence of exogenous feline leukemia virus infection was studied in 302 necropsied cats with various disorders. 9% showed the classical outcome of persistent productive FeLV infection which was represented by FeLV antigen expression in different organs. 152 cats (50%) harboured exogenous FeLV-specific proviral sequences in the bone marrow but did not express viral antigen. These cats were considered as horizontally but non-productively infected. Statistical evaluation showed a significant association of non-productive ho

Multiple congenital malformations in a litter of feline fetuses associated with gestational exposure to a synthetic estrus-suppressing progestin.

BACKGROUND: Congenital malformations in domestic cats are traditionally considered uncommon; however, recent evidence suggests they may represent an underrecognized cause of neonatal mortality. Most reported anomalies occur as isolated defects in individual animals, while the occurrence of multiple severe malformations within the same fetus or affecting an entire litter appears to be rare. Exposure to exogenous substances during critical windows of embryonic development has been proposed as a potential contributing factor. Reports describing congenital abnormalities in feline fetuses following

Pre-mortem risk factors for mortality in kittens less than 8 weeks old at a dedicated kitten nursery.

OBJECTIVES: Kittens have unique requirements for care in a shelter setting given their higher susceptibility to infectious disease and socialization needs. Significant time and resources are necessary to care for this vulnerable population and dedicated kitten nurseries are one way to meet the requirements of kittens too young for neutering and rehoming. However, young kittens remain at a higher risk of dying relative to adult cats, even in specialized settings. Efforts to investigate kitten mortality have focused on post-mortem findings and little is known about pre-mortem clinical signs that

A novel replication-deficient feline herpesvirus type 1 vector-based vaccine provides strong immune protection in cats.

Feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1) is a member of the Alphaherpesvirinae subfamily, which includes important pathogens affecting humans and animals, such as herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, pseudorabies virus, and Marek's disease virus. While herpesviruses show promise as vaccine vectors for delivering foreign antigens, ensuring their safety is a significant concern that must be addressed alongside their efficacy. In this study, we report the development of a replication-defective FHV-1 ΔgL-based vaccine candidate, which is propagated exclusively in a specially modified F81 cell line. Vaccin

Infectious diseases of dogs and cats on Isabela Island, Galapagos.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination and importation of dogs and cats are prohibited in the Galapagos, resulting in a uniquely isolated population. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of infectious diseases of dogs and cats that impact their health, could spill over to native wildlife, or sentinel diseases of concern to humans. HYPOTHESIS: The isolation of dogs and cats in the Galapagos protects them from diseases common in mainland populations. ANIMALS: Ninety-five dogs and 52 cats presented during a neutering campaign. METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study was performed. B

Treatment of cats with ocular disease attributable to herpesvirus infection: 17 cases (1983-1993).

Medical records of 17 cats with ocular disease attributable to herpesvirus injection were reviewed. Herpesvirus infection was confirmed by a positive result on an immunofluorescent antibody test or by detection of dendritic corneal ulcers. Cats were 3 months to 23 years old (mean, 4.8 years). Sex or breed predilections were not evident. Vaccination history was available for 13 cats, 9 of which had been adequately vaccinated against feline viral rhinotracheitis, calici, and panleukopenia viruses. Six cats had a history of respiratory tract disease. Twelve cats were tested for FeLV, and 3 had po

[An update on viral diseases of the dog and cat].

In this review, recent developments in the field of viral diseases of the dog and the cat are discussed. In the dog, infection with the coronavirus type 2 is associated with respiratory signs, while infection of a highly pathogenic strain of the coronavirus type 1 has been identified as the cause of mortality in puppies. A new strain of the canine parvovirus is identified, from which the pathogenicity is not yet completely clarified. Infection with West Nile virus is associated with progressive neurological disease and subclinical infections in dogs. Infection with equine influenza A (H3N8) or
