This paper reports a retrospective study of acute femoral neck fractures in 123 patients treated by primary prosthetic replacement. The average age in our patient population was 80-5 years. A Christiansen trunnion-bearing hip prosthesis (Christiansen, 1969 and 1974) was used in all patients except one. The prosthesis was cemented to the femoral shaft. The postoperative mortality rate was low, and the mortality rate was 8-7 per cent. The patients were examined between 6 months and 3 1/2 years after operation. Excellent or good results according to Stinchfield's hip assessment system (Stinchfiel

INTRODUCTION: Hardware removal in healed trochanteric fractures (TF) in the absence of infection or significant mechanical complications is rarely indicated. However, in patients with persistent pain, prominent material and discomfort in the activities of daily living, the implant is eventually removed. Publications of ipsilateral femoral neck fracture after removal of implants from healed trochanteric fractures (FNFARIHTF) just because of pain or discomfort are rare. The purpose of this systematic review of the literature is to report on the eventual risk factors, the mechanisms, the clinical

INTRODUCTION: Osteonecrosis (ON) of the humeral head is defined as "avascular" when the death of bone is due to a disrupted blood supply. It is a known complication following proximal humeral fractures and can lead to poor long-term outcomes and even additional revision surgeries.
CASE REPORT: Patient AP developed symptomatic ON, 3 years following repair of a 4-part valgus impacted proximal humerus fracture. The point of interest in this case is the length of time from injury at which she developed symptomatic ON. Following surgical repair, she was seen at standard intervals, 6 weeks, 3-, 6-,

BACKGROUND: The clinical efficacy of cancellous screws (CS) and femoral neck system (FNS) internal fixation in the treatment of femoral neck fracture (FNF) was compared in this research.
METHODS: Ninety-six patients with FNF were enrolled in this study. There were 47 cases in FNS group and 49 cases in CS group. The data of operation time, intraoperative bleeding, bed days and complication were recorded. Patients' joint function was evaluated by Harris score. At the last follow-up, the cost-effectiveness analysis of the two methods was analyzed according to the total cost of patients and hip f

UNLABELLED: Mineral density and bone geometry are the two main biomechanical factors related to bone resistance to stress.
OBJECTIVE: In this study we assess whether differences in the proximal femur geometry (PFG) characterize different types of osteoporotic fractures.
METHODS: We studied 533 postmenopausal women aged 50 - 85. They were divided into four groups matched for bone mineral density at the femoral neck; without fractures (165), vertebral fractures (139), trochanteric fractures (102), and hip fractures (127). Dual X-Ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans at the spine and at the hip were c

BACKGROUD: Internal fixation has been established as a treatment of choice in relatively young patients with femoral neck fractures. Due to the characteristics of femoral neck anatomy and blood supply, complications such as malunion, nonunion, avascular necrosis, and femoral neck shortening can occur after internal fixation of femoral neck fractures. Unlike other complications such as avascular necrosis or nonunion, femoral neck shortening has not been relatively well studied. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors and clinical outcomes of femoral neck shortening after internal fixat

OBJECTIVE: The FNS System DePuy Synthes® (EEUU, 2018) represents a recent alternative treatment for the fixation of femoral neck fractures, providing biomechanical advantages with respect to cannulated screws (3 CS). The objective of this study is to compare the clinical results of both fixation methods.
METHOD: A retrospective collection of the 36 subcapital fractures treated with the FNS system was carried out compared with a retrospective search of the last 35 patients treated with 3 CS. Age, sex, fracture pattern, delay until the intervention, length of intervention, hospital length stay,

The most common overuse injury leading to medical discharge of military recruits is a stress fracture. One of the high-risk stress fractures is of the lateral femoral neck which risks osteonecrosis of the femoral head, the need for arthroplasty and permanent disability. To prevent fracture progression early surgical intervention is recommended. Surgical repairs are performed in about 25% of cases of femoral neck stress fractures at military treatment facilities. Hip geometry is an important intrinsic risk for stress fractures. Loads in the average loading direction will not cause a fracture, b

PURPOSE: Operative fixation of femoral neck fractures (FNFs) remains challenging. Complications are not infrequent, especially in displaced patterns. Numerous fixation techniques have been previously described in the literature; however, there remains a paucity of data regarding outcomes of these injuries treated with the femoral neck system (FNS).
METHODS: Patients with a displaced FNF (OTA/AO 31B) treated with the FNS at a single level 1 academic trauma center between 1/1/2019 and 1/1/2023 were identified. Radiographs were reviewed to assess fracture displacement, location, and characterist

BACKGROUND: Displaced femoral neck fractures frequently result in considerable patient morbidity, with complications such as postoperative femoral neck shortening occurring in up to 39.1% of cases. This shortening is associated with reduced hip function and mobility. The Femoral Neck System (FNS), which allows for controlled sliding to facilitate fracture reduction and healing, may mitigate these issues. However, the ideal sliding distance to balance fracture healing and minimize complications is not well defined.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 179 patients who underwen

Trauma-induced avascular necrosis of the femoral head represents the most common femoral head aseptic necrosis. An alteration in blood supply to the femoral head is the cause of the vascular necrosis. Another mechanism in the genesis of femoral head necrosis is the tamponade effect. Femoral head necrosis may be asymptomatic for a long time, even in patients in whom late segmental collapse already is present. Radiography does not allow diagnostic reliability until 6 months after fracture. The presence of a low signal intensity band away from the fracture line on magnetic resonance images clearl

Four cases of femoral neck fracture following avascular necrosis of the femoral head were studied histologically. All four patients were women who had received steroid therapy, three of them for systemic lupus erythematosus and the other for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Two types of fracture were found according to the site and the mechanism of fracture. One was at the junction between the necrotic bone and the repairing bone, and it can thus be regarded as a stress fracture. The other type of fracture commenced at the superior portion of the junction between the femoral head and neck,

This study aimed to evaluate the relevant factors of postoperative avascular necrosis of the femoral head (AVN) in children with femoral neck fracture. This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 28 children with femoral neck fractures treated at our center between July 2016 and January 2019. The average age was 9.3 (range, 4.4-14) years with 75% male participants. Fracture classification was based on the Delbet classification: there were four, seven, 15, and two cases of type I, II, III, and IV fractures, respectively. Displacement degree was based on the Garden classification. S

Femoral head perfusion in adults was studied by superselective i.a. DSA in 35 normal subjects, in 9 patients with medial femoral neck fracture preoperatively, and in 36 patients with femoral head necrosis before bone grafting, and as therapeutic control after grafting. All patients with femoral neck fracture showed an interruption of the proximal nutrient branches. In 93% of the cases with femoral head necrosis, these branches were rarefied or the medial circumflex femoral artery was interrupted. Postoperative DSA after pedicled pelvic bone graft revealed a regularly perfused graft in 82%. Sup

INTRODUCTION: Peri-implant fractures (PIF) reported after cannulated screw and dynamic hip screw fixation historically occur distal to the implant within the subtrochanteric region secondary to the development of a stress riser. Newer implant designs for femoral neck fractures have attempted to combine the benefits of minimally invasive techniques without forgoing rigid angular stability but bring new potential complications.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of an intertrochanteric PIF in the setting of a non-displaced femoral neck fracture treated with the DePuy Synthes Femoral Neck System (FN

BACKGROUND: An ipsilateral fracture of the femoral neck is seen in association with 1% to 9% of femoral shaft fractures, and 20% to 50% of these injuries are missed initially. Recognition of an associated femoral neck fracture prior to stabilization of the femoral shaft fracture is imperative to avoid or minimize complications of displacement and osteonecrosis.
METHODS: A protocol to look for a femoral neck fracture in all patients with a femoral shaft fracture was instituted at a single level-I trauma center. This protocol consisted of a dedicated anteroposterior internal rotation plain radi
