Untargeted LC-MS/MS Metabolite Profiling of Wild, Field-Domesticated and Tissue-Cultured Rhizomes of the Endangered Medicinal Fern Cibotium barometz.

Cibotium barometz (Gouji) is a widely prescribed traditional medicine whose supply still depends on wild-harvested rhizomes of this CITES-listed medicinal tree fern. We asked whether field domestication or tissue culture reproduces its chemical profile. Wild-collected (WP), field-domesticated (DM) and tissue-cultured (ZP) rhizomes (n = 3) were profiled by untargeted LC-MS/MS. Of 2828 annotated features, 2787 (98.6%) were detected in all three materials and fewer than ten were group-exclusive, indicating that differences are quantitative rather than qualitative, although this overlap partly ref

Molecular phylogeny of the fern genus Elaphoglossum (Elaphoglossaceae) based on chloroplast non-coding DNA sequences: contributions of species from the Indian Ocean area.

We performed a phylogenetic analysis of the fern genus Elaphoglossum using two non-coding chloroplast spacers: trnL-trnF and rps4-trnS. The sampling includes 123 species, of which 80 have not been previously sequenced, and for the first time includes species from Africa and the Indian Ocean area. The results of this expanded study largely agree with an earlier molecular study based on a smaller group of neotropical species and with the morphology-based classification of Mickel and Atehortua. We found, however, that some infrageneric groups such as section Elaphoglossum are not monophyletic. Be

Fern-synthesized nanoparticles in the fight against malaria: LC/MS analysis of Pteridium aquilinum leaf extract and biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles with high mosquitocidal and antiplasmodial activity.

Malaria remains a major public health problem due to the emergence and spread of Plasmodium falciparum strains resistant to chloroquine. There is an urgent need to investigate new and effective sources of antimalarial drugs. This research proposed a novel method of fern-mediated synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) using a cheap plant extract of Pteridium aquilinum, acting as a reducing and capping agent. AgNP were characterized by UV-vis spectrophotometry, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Phytochemical

[Speciation analysis of cadmium in cadmium-enriched plants with SE-HPLC combined with ICP-MS and ESI-MS].

Different species of ferns (pyrrosia lingua, Lepisorus thunbergianus, Lycopodium japonicum, Elaphoglossum yoshinagae and Woodwardia japonica) were cultivated using different species of cadmium as cultivation solution. The results showed that there were differences in enrichment amounts of cadmium in different parts of plants (amounts in root > in stem > in leaves). And it was found that different species of cadmium could induce synthesization of plant--chelated peptides (PCs) with different extents. And then PCs was coordinated with cadmium to decrease the toxicity from cadmium. There are some

Lineage-specific response to melatonin in stomatal regulation across vascular plants.

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is a conserved indoleamine that regulates diverse physiological processes, including stomatal movement in angiosperms. However, whether this regulation is conserved across different plant lineages remains uncertain. Here, we examined the stomatal responses to exogenous melatonin in 17 representative plant species: seven angiosperms, two gymnosperms, seven ferns, and one lycophyte. In seed plants, melatonin induced dose-dependent stomatal closure, accompanied by the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO), and cytosolic Ca2+; thi

An extract of the fern Polypodium leucotomos (Difur) modulates Th1/Th2 cytokines balance in vitro and appears to exhibit anti-angiogenic activities in vivo: pathogenic relationships and therapeutic implications.

In the present study we show the capacity of an extract of the fern Polypodium leucotomos (PLE) to partially inhibit the production of cytokines showing a Th1 pattern (IL-2, IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha) in human PHA-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The percentage of inhibition was 24% for IL-2, 72% for INF-gamma and 53% for TNF-alpha. With regard to Th2 cytokines, the addition of PLE resulted in a significant increase (33%) in IL-10 production. Surprisingly, the production of the inflammatory cytokine IL-6 was completely abolished (100% inhibition) by PLE at all doses tested. In a se

Limited field establishment of a weed biocontrol agent, Floracarus perrepae (Acariformes: Eriophyidae), against Old World climbing fern in Florida--a possible role of mite resistant plant genotypes.

The leaflet galling mite Floracarus perrepae Knihinicki & Boczek was released on Lygodium microphyllum (Cav.) in 63 plots in Florida from 2008 to 2009. Mites transferred onto field plants in 34 plots, but failed to establish populations in the majority of plots. Leaflet galls were observed in only six plots, and in only two plots did mite populations persist for >12 mo. Rates of mite transfer onto field plants were similar for methods using direct transfer of galls versus approaches using passive transfer of mites from infested plants. Often leaflets on some L. microphyllum plants were heavily

d-Cysteine-Induced Rapid Root Abscission in the Water Fern Azolla Pinnata: Implications for the Linkage between d-Amino Acid and Reactive Sulfur Species (RSS) in Plant Environmental Responses.

Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and Reactive Nitrogen Species (RNS) have been proposed as universal signaling molecules in plant stress responses. There are a growing number of studies suggesting that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) or Reactive Sulfur Species (RSS) are also involved in plant abiotic as well as biotic stress responses. However, it is still a matter of debate as to how plants utilize those RSS in their signaling cascades. Here, we demonstrate that d-cysteine is a novel candidate for bridging our gap in understanding. In the genus of the tiny water-floating fern Azolla, a rapid root absciss

Dose-Dependent Variation in Anticancer Activity of Hexane and Chloroform Extracts of Field Horsetail Plant on Human Hepatocarcinoma Cells.

Horsetail fern plant is botanically known as Equisetum arvense L., and it is a good source of phenolic flavonoids, phenolic acids, and compounds. Anticancer properties of hexane and chloroform extracts of the horsetail fern plant and their mechanisms involved in the anticancer activity on human hepatocarcinoma (HuH-7) cells were examined. Cytotoxicity was evaluated by using MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) and NRU (neutral red uptake) assays. Other parameters such as oxidative stress and apoptosis in pretreated hexane and chloroform extracts of the horsetail f

Copper deficiency induced expression of Fe-superoxide dismutase gene in Matteuccia struthiopteris.

Iron-superoxide dismutase (Fe-SOD) activity was not detected in extracts from the leaves of ferns, Equisetum arvense and Matteuccia struthiopteris. To know why ferns lack Fe-SOD activity, the Fe-SOD like gene (MsFeSOD1) was isolated from M. struthiopteris and its expression was investigated with a focus on the metals Fe and Cu using the prothalli of the fern. The expression of MsFeSOD1 mRNA was induced by a deficiency of Cu, but Fe-SOD activity was not detected. The recombinant protein of MsFeSOD1 produced in E. coli showed Fe-SOD activity. These findings suggest that the fern Fe-SOD like gene
