Isostructural bridging diferrous chalcogenide cores [FeII(μ-E)FeII] (E = O, S, Se, Te) with decreasing antiferromagnetic coupling down the chalcogenide series.

Iron compounds containing a bridging oxo or sulfido moiety are ubiquitous in biological systems, but substitution with the heavier chalcogenides selenium and tellurium, however, is much rarer, with only a few examples reported to date. Here we show that treatment of the ferrous starting material [(tBupyrpyrr2)Fe(OEt2)] (1-OEt2) (tBupyrpyrr2 = 3,5-tBu2-bis(pyrrolyl)pyridine) with phosphine chalcogenide reagents E = PR3 results in the neutral phosphine chalcogenide adduct series [(tBupyrpyrr2)Fe(EPR3)] (E = O, S, Se; R = Ph; E = Te; R = tBu) (1-E) without any electron transfer, whereas treatment

Beta-carotene and inhibitors of iron absorption modify iron uptake by Caco-2 cells.

A National fortification program instituted in Venezuela in 1993 reduced iron deficiency and anemia by half in only 1 y. The fortification mixture contained ferrous fumarate, vitamin A and other vitamins. We conducted experiments to characterize ferrous fumarate uptake by Caco-2 cells. Increasing amounts of ferrous fumarate, vitamin A, phytate, tannic acid and beta-carotene were added to incubation mixtures using a range of concentrations that included the molar ratios used in the Venezuelan fortification program. Cells were incubated for 1 h at 37 degrees C with 37 kBq (59)Fe and the compound

Iron bioavailability in iron-fortified cereal foods: The contribution of in vitro studies.

Iron deficiency anemia is the most common nutritional deficiency in humans. Not all dietary ingested iron, heme or nonheme, will be available to absorption and negative imbalance between iron requirements and absorption leads to iron deficiency and/or anemia. The recommended iron values usually are based on the genetic and on diet iron-bioavailability, which can be considered as the principal factor that change among the cultures and influences the distinct levels of recommendation among countries. Dietary changes present practical limitations due to be difficult to change food habits. The iro

Differential growth inhibition of cancer cell lines and antioxidant activity of extracts of red, brown, and green marine algae.

As the use of various anticancer drugs is associated with many undesirable side effects, there is an urgent need for the discovery of new, better, and specific anticancer compounds. Antioxidant and antiproliferative activities as well as effects on cell morphology were investigated for methanol (M), chloroform (C), ethyl acetate (E), and aqueous (A) extracts of Caulerpa peltata, Gelidiella acerosa, Padina gymnospora, and Sargassum wightii using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging, ferrous ion chelation, and resazurin-based growth inhibition (in A549, HCT-15, MG-63, and PC-3 cell l

Iron-Mediated Si-H Bond Activation: Synthesis, Characterization and Spectral Properties of a Series of FeII(H)(SiR3)(dmpe)2 Complexes.

Synthesis and structural characterization of a series of iron(II) silyl hydrides stabilized by a bisphosphine ligand are discussed. FeII(H)(SiR3)(dmpe)2 compounds were formed by insertion of in situ generated Fe0(dmpe)2 in the presence of Si-H partners (R3SiH = PhSiH3, Ph2SiH2, and Ph3SiH). Multinuclear NMR monitoring (1H, 31P, 29Si) demonstrated a strong preference for the cis configuration regardless of the silicon substituents, a tendency mirrored by DFT calculations, which originates from the strong trans influence of the silyl ligands, making those compounds rather unusual in the family o

Antiferroptotic Activities of Oxindole GIF-0726-r Derivatives: Involvement of Ferrous Iron Coordination and Free-Radical Scavenging Capacities.

Ferroptosis and oxytosis are iron- and oxidative stress-dependent cell death pathways strongly implicated in neurodegenerative diseases, cancers, and metabolic disorders. Therefore, specific inhibitors may have broad clinical applications. We previously reported that 3-[4-(dimethylamino)benzyl]-2-oxindole (GIF-0726-r) and derivatives protected the mouse hippocampal cell line HT22 against oxytosis/ferroptosis by suppressing reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation. In this study, we evaluated the biological activities of GIF-0726-r derivatives with modifications at the oxindole skeleton and o

Effect of Fe(II) and Fe(III) doping levels on the structural and binding mechanism of graphene oxide chitosan: Spectral analysis and density function theory calculation.

Iron (Fe) modification has been recognized as an attractive method to improve the performance of carbon-based materials, but it is still not clear about the effects of Fe modification and doping levels on the structure of carbon-based materials, and the binding mechanism at a molecular level. In this study, Fe(II) and Fe(III) with the molar ratio of 1:1, 2:1, 4:1, and 5:1 are used as modifiers, and graphene oxide and chitosan (GOCS) are used as the carbon-based matrix materials to prepare a series of Fe modified GOCS composites named Fe(II, III)GCs-1/1, 2/1, 4/1, and 5/1, respectively. [Fe(NCMe)6](BF4)2 is a bifunctional catalyst for styrene aziridination by nitrene transfer and heterocycle expansion by subsequent dipolar insertion.

The solvated iron(II) salt [Fe(NCMe)6](BF4)2 (Me = methyl) is shown to be a bifunctional catalyst with respect to aziridination of styrene. The salt serves as an active catalyst for nitrene transfer from PhINTs to styrene to form 2-phenyl-N-tosylaziridine (Ph = phenyl; Ts = tosyl, -S{O}2-p-C6H4Me). The iron(II) salt also acts as a Lewis acid in non-coordinating CH2Cl2 solution, to catalyze heterolytic CN bond cleavage of the aziridine and insertion of dipolarophiles. The 1,3-zwitterionic intermediate is presumably supported by interaction of the metal dication with the anion, and by resonance

Fe(II)-Catalyzed Recrystallization Drives Phosphorus and Aluminum Release from Goethite.

Goethite often harbors impurities, such as phosphorus (P) and aluminum (Al), which are incorporated into its structure through direct substitution or coprecipitation with nanocrystalline phases. Understanding the processes that drive the release of P and Al from goethite is of paramount importance for the iron ore industry and for managing nutrient and pollutant behavior in the environment. This study investigates the impact of Fe(II)-catalyzed recrystallization on the release of P and Al from goethite. We evaluated the solubility and extractability of P and Al in suspensions of Al- and P-copr

Thermodynamic Two-Site Surface Reaction Model for Predicting Munition Constituent Reduction Kinetics with Iron (Oxyhydr)oxides.

Iron (oxyhydr)oxides comprise a significant portion of the redox-active fraction of soils and are key reductants for remediation of sites contaminated with munition constituents (MCs). Previous studies of MC reduction kinetics with iron oxides have focused on the concentration of sorbed Fe(II) as a key parameter. To build a reaction kinetic model, it is necessary to predict the concentration of sorbed Fe(II) as a function of system conditions and the redox state. A thermodynamic framework is formulated that includes a generalized double-layer model that utilizes surface acidity and surface com

Mineralogical characteristics of root iron plaque and its functional mechanism for regulating Cr phytoextraction of hyperaccumulator Leersia hexandra Swartz.

Leersia hexandra Swartz (L. hexandra) is a promising hyperaccumulator for Cr pollution remediation, but whether its Cr phytoextraction is subject to the root surface-attached iron plaque (IP) remains unclear. In this research, the natural and artificial IPs were proven to be comprised of small amounts of exchangeable Fe as well as carbonate Fe, and dominantly Fe minerals involving amorphous two-line ferrihydrite (Fh), poorly crystalline lepidocrocite (Le) and highly crystalline goethite (Go). The Fe content in the artificial IPs augmented with increasing induced Fe(II) concentration, and the 5

Microbial communities contribute to the elimination of As, Fe, Mn, and NH4+ from groundwater in household sand filters.

Household sand filters (SFs) are widely applied to remove iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), arsenic (As), and ammonium (NH4+) from groundwater in the Red River delta, Vietnam. Processes in the filters probably include a combination of biotic and abiotic reactions. However, there is limited information on the microbial communities treating varied groundwater compositions and on whether biological oxidation of Fe(II), Mn(II), As(III), and NH4+ contributes to the overall performance of SFs. We therefore analyzed the removal efficiencies, as well as the microbial communities and their potential activitie

Enhanced degradation of tetracycline over FeS-based Fenton-like process: Autocatalytic decomposition of H2O2 and reduction of Fe(III).

This study constructed a FeS-based Fenton-like process to explore the degradation of TTC in the presence of copper ions. The acidic condition of pH 3 was more favorable to the H2O2 decomposition and TTC degradation, and it was slightly enhanced by Cu(II). The production of •OH from H2O2 was revealed through radical scavenging and benzoic acid probe experiments, and the ratio of H2O2 decomposition to •OH production was about 1-1.5, which is comparatively consistent with the theoretical ratio. FeS-based Fenton process was proved to be a homogenous system, the slow release of Fe(II) source and th

Humic acid and fulvic acid facilitate the formation of vivianite and the transformation of cadmium via microbially-mediated iron reduction.

The effects of humic acids (HA) and fulvic acids (FA) on the fate of Cd in anaerobic environment upon microbial reduction of Cd-bearing ferrihydrite (Fh) with Geobacter metallireducens were investigated. The results showed that HA and FA could promote the reductive dissolution of Fh and the formation of vivianite. After incubation of 38 d, vivianite accounted for 47.19%, 59.22%, and 48.53% of total Fe in biological control batch (BCK), HA and FA batches (C/Fe molar ratio of 1.0), respectively, by Mössbauer spectroscopy analysis. In terms of Cd, HA and FA could promote the release of adsorbed C

Formation and Transport of Cr(III)-NOM-Fe Colloids upon Reaction of Cr(VI) with NOM-Fe(II) Colloids at Anoxic-Oxic Interfaces.

Natural organic matter-iron (NOM-Fe) colloids are ubiquitous at anoxic-oxic interfaces of subsurface environments. Fe(II) or NOM can chemically reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III), and the formation of Cr(III)-NOM-Fe colloids can control the fate and transport of Cr. We explored the formation and transport of Cr(III)-humic acid (HA)-Fe colloids upon reaction of Cr(VI) with HA-Fe(II) colloids over a range of environmentally relevant conditions. Cr(VI) was completely reduced by HA-Fe(II) complexes under anoxic conditions, and the formation of Cr(III)-HA-Fe colloids depended on HA concentration (or molar C/

First homoleptic complexes of isocyanoferrocene.

Interaction of aminoferrocene with a 65/35 mol % mixture of phenyl formate/phenol followed by subsequent dehydration of the resulting ferrocenylformamide with POCl3 produced a high yield of air- and thermally stable, peach-colored isocyanoferrocene (CNFc). Combining 6 equiv of CNFc with bis(naphthalene)chromium(0) afforded orange-red Cr(CNFc)6, the first homoleptic complex of CNFc. Successive one-electron oxidations of the latter with Ag+ quantitatively produced saddle-brown [Cr(CNFc)6]+ and forest-green [Cr(CNFc)6]2+. Ferrihydrite transformations in flooded paddy soils: rates, pathways, and product spatial distributions.

Complex interactions between redox-driven element cycles in soils influence iron mineral transformation processes. The rates and pathways of iron mineral transformation processes have been studied intensely in model systems such as mixed suspensions, but transformation in complex heterogeneous porous media is not well understood. Here, mesh bags containing 0.5 g of ferrihydrite were incubated in five water-saturated paddy soils with contrasting microbial iron-reduction potential for up to twelve weeks. Using X-ray diffraction analysis, we show near-complete transformation of the ferrihydrite t

Biochar-derived dissolved black carbon accelerates ferrihydrite microbial transformation and subsequent imidacloprid degradation.

The effects of an electron shuttle (dissolved black carbon (DBC) derived from biochar) on the microbial reduction of ferrihydrite and subsequent imidacloprid (IMI) degradation were studied. The results showed that DBC addition enhanced the microbial reduction of Fe(III) in ferrihydrite and increased the quantity of Fe(II) released into the liquid phase. The electron transfer capacity of DBC was significantly influenced by the content of redox-active oxygen-containing functional groups (e.g., quinone, hydroquinone, and polyphenol groups), which was dependent on the pyrolysis temperature. K2FeO4-modified vinasse biochar reduces chromium accumulation in rice grains and enhances Cr(VI) reduction in paddy soil.

K2FeO4-modified biochar (KFB) has shown potential for chromium (Cr) immobilization, but its effects on Cr transformation and translocation within the soil-rice continuum remain poorly understood. We synthesized KFB from vinasse-derived biochar and conducted a pot experiment with Cr-spiked soil (300 mg·kg-1) under four treatments: control (CK), 1% unmodified biochar (VB), 1% FeCl3-modified biochar (FB), and 1% KFB.
