Early fetal loss in monochorionic and dichorionic twin pregnancies: analysis of the Southwest Thames Obstetric Research Collaborative (STORK) multiple pregnancy cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Monochorionic (MC) twins are at increased risk of early fetal loss secondary to vascular complications such as twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). This study compared the early perinatal loss rates between MC and dichorionic (DC) twins in an era of invasive treatment for TTTS. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of all twin pregnancies of known chorionicity from a large regional cohort of nine hospitals over a 10-year period. Ultrasound data were matched to hospital delivery records and to a mandatory national register of pregnancy losses. Prospective risk of pregnancy loss

A research on the erupted fetal diseases caused by traditional Chinese drugs--discussion from the issue that Chinese goldthread rhizome is prohibited in Singapore.

Chinese Goldthread Rhizome is prohibited in Singapore since it is thought to induce neonatal jaundice. In literatures of traditional Chinese medicine, this drug was never treated as a contraindicant for pregnancy, and there were no records and reports on it inducing neonatal jaundice. The results of the authors's experiments showed that Chinese Goldthread Rhizome and berberine had no induction of neonatal jaundice in pregnant rats and mice and newly born rats, and had no influence either on the activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase of mice red blood cells. Fetal toxicity of traditional

Geospatial Distribution of Prenatally and Postnatally Diagnosed Congenital Heart Disease: Implications for Equitable Care from a Fetal Heart Society Research Collaborative Study.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize patterns in the geospatial distribution of pre- and postnatally diagnosed congenital heart disease (CHD) across 6 surgical centers. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective, multicenter case series from the Fetal Heart Society identified patients at 6 centers from 2012 through 2016 with prenatally (PrND) or postnatally (PoND) diagnosed hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) or d-transposition of the great arteries (TGA). Geospatial analysis for clustering was done by the average nearest neighbor (ANN) tool or optimized hot spot tool, depending on spatial unit and data type. Bo

Dorsal myelotomy in E15-E16 fetal rat: A promising paradigm in regeneration research, with serendipitous transcriptomic effects on development, of the primary afferent system.

BACKGROUND: The applied multidisciplinary approach in neuroscience has tackled the regeneration enigma in the central nervous system for decades. Reported regeneration potential in mammals is lacking confirmation without a suitable paradigm. In vivo fetal experimentation offers an almost insurmountable drawback, though its feasibility has been shown long ago. New method: Following two former technical papers on fetal surgery, here we present dorsal myelotomy in fetal rat and antegrade HRP-tracing as a suitable paradigm to reveal the intrinsic regenerative program in DRG neurons. Moreover, disc

[Researchers show growing interest in antenatal mortality. Increased understanding of intrauterine fetal death may reduce the number of cases in the long run].

The incidence of intrauterine fetal death (from the 28th gestational week) is reported to be 3.6/1000 births in Sweden. Continuous improvements in perinatal care have resulted in a dramatic decrease in early neonatal mortality during the last few decades, but no comparable reduction of antenatal mortality has been observed. A better knowledge of the etiology of stillbirth is imperative to achieve a further decrease in the perinatal mortality rate. Advanced maternal age, smoking during pregnancy, maternal overweight/obesity and low socioeconomic class has been demonstrated to increase the risk

Research on evaluation of fetal right ventricular function in normal and diabetic pregnant women during mid to late pregnancy using automated MPI ultrasound detection technology.

Objective: fetal circulatory characteristics differ from those after birth; the right ventricle assumes more than 60% of the workload in the systemic circulation before birth. The right ventricle automated myocardial performance index (AM+MPI) is a simple, time-efficient, and stable assessment method used to evaluate overall cardiac function. This study aimed to apply the right ventricle AM+MPI technique to explore its role in normal mid-to-late pregnancy fetal cardiac function and compare the AM+MPI differences between diabetic and normal fetuses. Methods: A total of 150 pregnant women who vi

Original Research: Generation of non-deletional hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin β-globin locus yeast artificial chromosome transgenic mouse models: -175 Black HPFH and -195 Brazilian HPFH.

Fetal hemoglobin is a major genetic modifier of the phenotypic heterogeneity in patients with sickle cell disease and certain β-thalassemias. Normal levels of fetal hemoglobin postnatally are approximately 1% of total hemoglobin. Patients who have hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin, characterized by elevated synthesis of γ-globin in adulthood, show reduced disease pathophysiology. Hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin is caused by β-globin locus deletions (deletional hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin) or γ-globin gene promoter point mutations (non-deletional hereditary pe

Compound heterozygosity for Southeast Asian hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin and β0-thalassemia results in thalassemia intermedia: Pedigree analysis and genetic research in a family from South China. A case report.

RATIONALE: Compound heterozygotes for deletional β-thalassemia can be difficult to diagnose due to its diverse clinical presentations and no routine screenings. This can lead to disease progression and delay in treatment. PATIENT CONCERNS: We reported pedigree analysis and genetic research in a family with rare β-thalassemia. DIAGNOSIS: Pedigree analysis and genetic research demonstrated that the patient was a compound heterozygote for β-thalassemia CD17/Southeast Asian hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin deletion, inherited from the parents. Magnetic resonance imaging T2* examination

Twins' memoirs and autobiographies both enlighten and entertain. These works, often overlooked by researchers, may suggest new avenues for investigation, such as nonshared environmental events that propel twins in different directions. Of course, MZ twins' generally parallel experiences and DZ twins generally criss-crossing paths are the bases of fascinating life stories. The following sections examined recent research on fetal reduction in twin pregnancy, twins' personality and military service, growth restriction in twins, and advances in conjoined twin separation. Modern reproductive technology and revisions of conventional family structures have yielded a curious array of twin-like sibships. Many of these pairings pose the same rearing questions and educational issues for parents and teachers as do ordinary monozygotic and dizygotic twins. This article considers how we classify these sibships, given the important implications for the pair members, their families, their friends and the professionals who care for them.
