We report a case of a persistent bronchopleural fistula following a pneumonectomy for post-tuberculosis bronchiectasis. The patient had two unsuccessful surgical attempts at closing of the fistula. Further surgical attempts were technically were not possible. Bronchoscopic closure was achieved by injecting human fibrin glue into the fistula via a catheter. Closure of the broncho-pleural fistula was confirmed by repeated ventilation scan over a period of 2 months. Endoscopic closure of small bronchopleural fistulae is an attractive option in children with significant underlying lung disease.

Otorhinolaryngological operations would be facilitated by the use of a safe, cheap, surgical adhesive. Though commercial fibrin glue is effective, it is both relatively expensive and, because it is prepared from pooled human blood, there has been concern that it carries the risk of transmitting viral disease, in particular hepatitis and acquired immune deficiency syndrome. We describe a rapid, cheap method of preparing sufficient fibrin glue, of adequate bonding power, from a small quantity of the patient's own blood, and therefore with no risk of contracting viral disease. Our method of prepa

Postoperative intra-abdominal adhesions remain an unsolved problem despite significant progress in the surgical procedures themselves. They often lead to small-bowel obstruction, chronic abdominal and pelvic pain, as well as female infertility. The loss of mesothelial cells and several components of the inflammatory system following injury to the peritoneum results in fibrin formation and angiogenesis. The remaining fibrin matrix and angiogenesis lead to replacement by fibroblasts and fibrous band formation. The aim of this study was to develop a new therapeutic method of preventing intra-abdo

In 3 cats artificial bony and dural defects of the posterior frontal sinus walls facing the frontal brain were closed with the help of a physiologic fibrin-based adhesive system (FAS) and a synthetic tissue adhesive (N-butylcyanoacrylate) in an attempt at comparing the relative merits and demerits of the 2 techniques. The bony and dural defects were partially covered with fascial tissue. Subsequently, the defects were sealed with adhesive using cyanoacrylate for the left frontal sinus and FAS for the right one. Unless healing was complicated by wound infection, fibrous tissue was found to have

Achieving hemostasis effectively is essential for surgical success and excellent patient outcomes. However, it is challenging to develop hemostatic adhesives that are fast-acting, strongly adherent, long-lasting, and biocompatible for treating hemorrhage. In this study, a sequential crosslinking fibrin glue (SCFG) is developed, of which the first network of the fibrin glue forms in situ within 2 s to act as an initial physical barrier and locks the gelatin methacryloyl precursor for tight construction of the second network to enhance wet adhesion and durability for tissues covered with blood.

AIM: To compare the efficiency and safety of fibrin glue to suture technique in pterygium surgery performed with limbal autograft.
METHODS: A prospective randomised clinical trial was carried out in 58 eyes of 58 patients operated for primary nasal pterygium. Autologous conjunctival graft taken from the superotemporal limbus was used to cover the sclera after pterygium excision. In 29 eyes, the transplant was attached to the sclera with a fibrin tissue adhesive (Beriplast P) and in 29 eyes with 8-0 Virgin silk sutures. The Mann-Whitney U test was used for statistical analysis. Postoperative p

The effect of human fibrin adhesive applied to the middle ear has been studied in guinea pig. Auditory function was measured using acoustically evoked brainstem responses. Middle and inner ear structures were studied with light, transmission and scanning electron microscopy. A transitory conductive hearing loss was observed, but after 8 weeks the auditory function appeared normal. Microscopy of the middle and inner ear failed to show any tissue damage.

Adhesive patches are optimum candidates for distinct biomedical applications, including tissue adhesion and leakage sealing in outpatient or surgical procedures. Unfortunately, most adhesive patches are significantly less effective at providing strong adhesion to the surface of wet tissue, which increases the risk and reduces the fault tolerance in surgery. Meanwhile, customization is difficult to achieve in terms of mechanical adaptability. To tackle this problem, we developed a chitosan-containing bioadhesive patch (ANC) comprising dual-crosslinked carboxymethyl chitosan methacrylate (CMCS-M

PURPOSE: Report a new technique for improvement of pterygium surgery: donor graft harvesting with air.
CASE REPORTS: We describe a technique that was used with 138 patients who underwent surgery that included a conjunctival autograft and fibrin glue with air injection to dissect the Tenon capsule from the conjunctiva.
RESULTS: No complications occurred with this technique and all patients achieved good results.
DISCUSSION: The surgical time with this new technique was similar to that reported in the literature. In addition, the graft thickness was close to that reported with femtosecond las

AIM: The treatment of perianal fistulas in Crohn's disease remains challenging. Fibrin glue injection has previously shown short-term efficacy in a randomized controlled trial. No long-term data are available to assess the benefit of this treatment.
METHODS: This retrospective multicentre study included all patients with drained fistulas treated by at least one fibrin glue injection between January 2004 and June 2015 in three tertiary French centres. The primary end-point was the rate of complete clinical remission at 1 year after injection defined by the closure of all fistula tracts with no

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Surgical management of anal fistulas is associated with considerable morbidity, mainly related to anal sphincter injury. However, treatment with fibrin glue is a safe and simple method associated with less discomfort and complications. A prospective trial was conducted at our institute to evaluate the use of fibrin glue (Tissucol, Baxter, The Netherlands) for simple and complex anal fistulas.
METHODOLOGY: From November 2001 until March 2004, 34 patients (22 male, 12 female, median age 40 years) were treated with Tissucol. Twenty-three (67%) fistulas were classified as simple

PURPOSE: To describe a method of fibrin glue fixation of single or multilayered amniotic membranes in sterile corneal ulceration.
DESIGN: A modified microsurgical procedure.
METHODS: The corneal ulcer is cleaned and the components of fibrin glue are applied separately. Amniotic membranes are rotated through the fibrinogen component and subsequently into the site of the ulceration where thrombin is already applied. An overlay membrane is sutured additionally on top. The results for one patient are illustrated as an example.
RESULTS: The application technique prevents development of foam and

Fibrin glue was used to treat significant pneumothoraces persisting for an average of 10 days in eight newborns. Six of the eight infants had reduction or resolution of persistent air leak within 24 hours of therapy. Two infants received a second course of therapy for recurrences. Complications encountered were bradycardia requiring manual ventilation (N=2), significant hypercalcemia (N=2), diaphragmatic paralysis (N=2), pneumothorax (PTX) on the contralateral side (N=1), and localized tissue necrosis (N=1). Fibrin glue is an effective treatment for intractable PTX but has significant risks.

HYPOTHESIS: Commercially produced fibrin sealant can be used to completely close both simple and complex fistulae in ano.
METHODS: A 29-patient prospective nonrandomized clinical trial was performed. In the operating room, the patient underwent an examination with anesthesia and the primary and secondary fistula tract openings were attempted to be identified. The fistula tract was curetted and fibrin sealant was injected into the secondary fistula tract opening until fibrin sealant was seen coming from the primary opening. A petroleum jelly gauze was then applied over the secondary opening an

Polypropylene (PP) mesh is well-known as a gold standard of all prosthetic materials of choice for the reinforcement of soft tissues in case of hernia, organ prolapse, and urinary incontinence. The adverse effects that follow surgical mesh implantation remain an unmet medical challenge. Herein, it is outlined a new approach to allow viability and adhesion of human menstrual blood-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MenSCs) on PP surgical meshes. A multilayered fibrin coating, based on fibrinogen and thrombin from a commercial fibrin sealant, was optimized to guarantee a homogeneous and stratifi
